In the Court of the Crimson Emperor

Chapter VIII

A week had passed since Mayuzumi Chiharu had fallen into the pond. Thanks to the doctor's care, she had made a full recovery. To celebrate this joyous occasion, Sakurai Ryuna and Furihata Kouka had arrived at her residence early that morning.

"I cannot fathom that His Imperial Majesty would impose such a terrifying punishment," Kouka remarked, a shudder of horror running through her. "I fear that Moriyama will be sentenced to death by beheading."

"I share the same belief," Ryuna agreed solemnly. "When I first heard the meaning behind a 'meter of red,' I felt as though I might faint from the very thought. It would surely be better to die than to endure such a fate."

"Indeed, that is the purpose of the punishment," Chiharu interjected quietly, her tone thoughtful.

Both women turned to her in surprise. "What do you mean, Chiharu?" asked Ryuna, her brow furrowing with curiosity.

"The punishment is designed to instil fear," Chiharu explained, her voice steady but tinged with a somber reflection. "It serves as a warning so that none would dare commit such a grave mistake again."

At first, Chiharu too had struggled to believe that Emperor Seijuurou would be so merciless towards his own concubines. But after much contemplation, she had come to understand the true nature of his actions. She now believed the Emperor had so many concubines solely to ensure the continuation of his lineage, viewing them not as individuals but as mere tools to secure a successor. There was no room for sentimentality in his eyes; they were nothing more than instruments in a greater political scheme. Of course, Chiharu would never dare speak of such thoughts aloud.

Life within the Forbidden Palace was not the glamorous existence many imagined it to be. A single misstep could cost not only one's own life but also the lives of those they held dear. As history had demonstrated time and again, a concubine who was once favoured and beloved could, in the blink of an eye, be cast aside and reduced to nothing more than an object of scorn.

Ryuna nodded, her expression sour. "It is a pity that Moriyama did not expose Haizaki," she complained bitterly. "I am certain Haizaki was the one who sent Moriyama to pressure you."

"We cannot accuse her without evidence," Chiharu cautioned, her tone calm yet firm.

Ryuna snorted, her frustration palpable. "I despise her! It would be better if she were to perish."

"Shh!" Kouka hissed, glancing nervously around, as though fearing someone might overhear. "You must not speak like that."

"Since when have you become so cautious, Kouka?" Ryuna asked, raising an eyebrow in surprise. "You sound just like Chiharu."

Kouka pursed her lips defensively. "I am simply being prudent. Walls have ears, Ryuna. Our status is below Haizaki's, and her father's position is higher than either my father's or your brother's. We must be careful with our words."

Chiharu understood why Ryuna harboured such strong animosity toward Haizaki. Their rivalry had long been apparent, and Ryuna's hatred ran deep. However, despite Ryuna's suspicions, Chiharu remained convinced that Haizaki was not involved. She had watched Haizaki closely, and the woman's genuine surprise when Moriyama was revealed as the culprit had seemed honest. Yet Ryuna, once her mind was made up, was impossible to dissuade. Since childhood, she had been resolute in her beliefs, and no amount of reason could easily change her mind.

Before Chiharu could respond, the eunuch who had been guarding the door called out, "Eunuch Reo has arrived!"

The three women exchanged startled glances. What could Eunuch Reo possibly want with them now?

The eunuch stepped into the room and bowed deeply. "Greetings to First Class Attendant Ryuna, First Class Attendant Chiharu, and Second Class Attendant Kouka. Your servant humbly brings an edict from His Imperial Majesty."

At once, Chiharu, Ryuna, and Kouka knelt on the floor, lowering their heads in respect.

"By the Grace of Heaven, His Imperial Majesty decrees," the eunuch continued, "that, due to the kindness of the Empress, Mayuzumi Chiharu is hereby bestowed with the rank of Noble Lady."

The three women exchanged a stunned glance, but they immediately rose and spoke in unison, their voices filled with gratitude. "We thank His Imperial Majesty for his kindness and generosity, and we also thank His Majesty the Empress for his graciousness."

Eunuch Reo smiled slightly, then extended the tray containing the official edict and the seal of Noble Lady toward Chiharu. "Please, Noble Lady."

Chiharu hesitated for a moment, overwhelmed by the unexpected recognition, before she accepted the tray with both hands, her fingers brushing the ornate seal.

"Allow your servant to congratulate Noble Lady Chiharu," Eunuch Reo said, bowing low.

"Thank you, Eunuch Reo," Chiharu replied, her mind still reeling from the sudden promotion. Beside her, her maid, Nene, quickly handed a pouch of money to Eunuch Reo as a token of appreciation.

Eunuch Reo nodded in acknowledgment, his expression impassive. "I shall take my leave, then."

Chiharu could only offer a silent nod in return, still processing the gravity of the moment.

Once the eunuch had departed, Ryuna wasted no time, her excitement bubbling over. "You've been bestowed the rank of Noble Lady! How wonderful! Now, your position is on par with Haizaki and Hanamiya!"

"But why has this happened so suddenly?" Kouka asked, her brow furrowed in confusion. "It seems rather unexpected."

"The important thing is the position!" Ryuna replied, her tone somewhat dismissive. "Why should we worry about how or why it came to be?"

"But it's strange," Kouka insisted, still uncertain.

"I only wish my own position were raised as well..." Ryuna trailed off, a wistful look crossing her face as she daydreamed.

Chiharu, however, remained silent. Her thoughts were clouded. Kouka was right—this promotion was baffling. Emperor Seijuurou had no apparent reason to elevate her status. The only plausible explanation that came to mind was the accident she had suffered. Could this be some form of compensation or consolation from the Emperor? Or perhaps it was the desire of Empress Tetsuya to reward her for some unseen service?

What troubled Chiharu most, though, was the reality of the situation: with this newfound rank, she would surely gain more enemies within the inner palace. Moriyama had already attempted to take her life once—who knew what other dangers lay ahead? She had entered the palace hoping for a life of peace and quiet, yet she found herself tangled in the web of rivalries and court intrigues.

She sighed deeply, a sense of melancholy settling over her. Why must my life be so complicated now? she thought. Once simple and serene, it now seemed fraught with peril and uncertainty.

At Palace of Earthly Tranquility:

Tetsuya was reviewing the palace budget when Riko entered, followed by two maids who placed a jug of vanilla milk, ceramic cups, and a plate of fruit on the table before quietly leaving the room.

"Thank you, Riko," Tetsuya said, acknowledging the gesture. Although he had no particular fondness for sweets, save for the occasional vanilla milk, he appreciated the gesture. The preference for healthier foods, like fruit, had been instilled in him by his grandfather, who had raised him with a focus on well-being.

"Please, take a moment to rest, Your Majesty," Riko suggested, her voice soft yet firm.

Tetsuya smiled, a genuine warmth in his eyes. Although Riko was now his head maid, she had once been a childhood friend. They had been neighbours, and her father had worked in Tetsuya's grandfather's clinic. Aida Kagetora still worked there to this day. When Tetsuya had married Seijuurou, Riko had chosen to accompany him to the palace, remaining by his side ever since.

At her suggestion, Tetsuya finally rose from his seat and moved to the sofa, where he settled comfortably. From there, he had a clear view of the garden outside the open window. The peaceful scene contrasted with the tension that often lingered within the palace walls.

Riko, swift and precise, poured the vanilla milk into a cup and handed it to Tetsuya.

"Thank you, Riko," he said once more, lifting the cup and sipping slowly. The taste was sweet yet subtle, and he couldn't help but think it was remarkably delicious.

Riko waited patiently until he had finished his drink. Once he placed the cup back on the table, she spoke, her tone turning serious. "Your Majesty, in accordance with your wishes, His Imperial Majesty has raised Attendant Chiharu's rank to Noble Lady. The news has spread swiftly throughout the imperial court."

Tetsuya's brow furrowed slightly. "And how is the situation now?"

"Everything is calm for the moment," Riko replied, her voice steady. "It seems they have chosen to remain low-key for now." She hesitated before continuing, her gaze lingering on Tetsuya. "However, there is troubling news. Moriyama Tomomi attempted suicide in the Cold Palace rather than face a life of disability. She refused to take any medicine or food, but His Imperial Majesty has threatened to kill her entire family should she go through with it. This threat has kept her from acting further."

Tetsuya remained silent, his expression unreadable. He had anticipated such a development. The fragile balance of power within the palace was always so precarious. Moriyama's downfall had been inevitable, but the consequences of her actions were far from over.

"Does Your Majesty intend to take action?" Riko inquired, her voice respectful but tinged with curiosity.

Tetsuya shook his head, his expression unreadable.

"Your servant understands, Your Majesty," Riko replied softly, her tone acknowledging the subtle finality in his response.

As Empress, Tetsuya held ultimate authority over the imperial palace. He was the one who controlled the financial records, overseeing everything from the eunuchs' and servants' salaries to the monthly allowances of the emperor's concubines. Every expenditure within the palace, no matter how small, required his approval.

Tetsuya flipped through the financial ledger with a frown. "These figures do not align," he muttered, his eyes scanning the numbers with sharp scrutiny. "I have never authorized such a large monthly allowance for any of the concubines."

Each concubine's allowance was determined by her rank and position. This money was used for a variety of purposes—paying their maids, purchasing goods, or indulging in personal desires. However, since the concubines were forbidden from leaving the palace, any purchases they made had to go through the Palace Household Bureau, which meant that Tetsuya had intimate knowledge of their spending habits.

"Perhaps the money came from her father," Riko suggested, her tone thoughtful.

Tetsuya sighed, his gaze still fixed on the ledger. "And yet, the salary of a mere minister would hardly be sufficient to cover such extravagant expenses." He closed the book with a quiet snap, his mind racing. "It seems that our suspicions were correct."

His and Seijuurou's concerns about Haizaki Shougo had been valid all along. His lifestyle—luxurious and ostentatious—was far beyond what would be expected from someone of his rank. And his family's wealth seemed to flow with no clear origin. Tetsuya's thoughts darkened as he contemplated the implications of this discovery.

XXXXXXXXXXX

In the evening at the Palace of Earthly Tranquility:

"His Imperial Majesty has arrived!" the attendant announced.

Seijuurou entered with a dignified air, his presence commanding the room.

"Greetings, Your Imperial Majesty," Tetsuya said, bowing respectfully.

Seijuurou extended his hand, and Tetsuya took it, offering a slight smile. Together, they walked toward the dining room, where a lavish spread of food had been prepared.

"You may leave now," Tetsuya instructed the maids. "I shall serve His Imperial Majesty personally."

"You servant obeys the command of Your Majesty," the maids responded in unison before filing out of the room, leaving the two alone.

Once seated at the table, Seijuurou leaned back slightly and asked, "How was your day?"

"As usual," Tetsuya replied calmly. "And what of you, Seijuurou?"

"The ministers have reported only good news," Seijuurou said with a faint smile. "I must admit, they are competent in their respective fields." He paused, his gaze darkening slightly. "Though, I am aware there are some among them who engage in corruption."

Tetsuya raised an eyebrow. "And will you do nothing about it?"

Seijuurou smirked. "Of course not. I am merely waiting for the right moment to deal with them."

Tetsuya's eyes narrowed slightly. "I suspect you will begin with Haizaki Shougo."

Seijuurou chuckled softly. "You truly know me well."

"His lifestyle is far too ostentatious," Tetsuya continued, his tone thoughtful. "Many people in the court have begun to gossip about him. His vanity is his undoing. Sooner or later, he will fall." Tetsuya paused before continuing, his voice becoming more reflective. "Haizaki is vastly different from Hanamiya Makoto. Hanamiya is polite, well-spoken, and clever enough to deceive even the most discerning eyes. A wolf in sheep's clothing—'tis the most fitting description for him."

Seijuurou seemed amused by Tetsuya's words. "You are not often inclined to speak of these matters."

"I have little interest in them," Tetsuya admitted frankly. "For power and wealth, people are willing to do anything. They twist the facts, slander the innocent, and silence their own consciences. Friends become foes, and foes become allies—all in the blink of an eye."

Seijuurou smiled, his expression softening. "Well, shall we eat now? We can save further talk for another time."

Tetsuya nodded, and they began to eat in companionable silence.

Seijuurou, ever the attentive spouse, looked at Tetsuya with concern as he noticed the small portions on his plate. "You must eat more, dear."

Tetsuya sighed, clearly irritated. "Please, not again."

"How much vanilla milk did you drink today?" Seijuurou pressed.

"Vanilla milk has nothing to do with my appetite. I always eat like this," Tetsuya replied with mild exasperation.

Seijuurou raised an eyebrow playfully. "Perhaps I should forbid the delivery of vanilla milk to the palace altogether."

Tetsuya's lips quirked in a slight smile. "If you do that, I will ban tofu from the palace menu."

Seijuurou chuckled at the banter. "You never change," he said fondly. Reaching across the table, he gently took Tetsuya's right hand and raised it to his lips, pressing a soft kiss to the back of his hand.

At Prospect Hill Park:

The end of spring was heralded by the blooming of the peonies. At Prospect Hill Park, Sakurai Ryuna, Mayuzumi Chiharu, and Furihata Kouka found themselves surrounded by the stunning sight of countless peonies in full bloom. Their vibrant colours stretched as far as the eye could see, a breathtaking spectacle of nature's beauty. It was rare for the emperor's concubines to be permitted to leave the palace during the day, but Empress Tetsuya had graciously allowed them this opportunity, and they intended to make the most of it.

"It's truly magnificent," Kouka murmured, her voice filled with awe.

The entire park was alive with colour—tens of thousands of peonies bloomed in harmony, their petals delicate yet vibrant. The sight was mesmerizing, captivating the soul in its serenity.

The three women sat in one of the park's gazebos, enjoying the peaceful moment. In the distance, Haizaki Shiina, Fukuda Hiroko, Hanamiya Misaki, and Kawahara Sayuri were scattered throughout the park, each enjoying their own part of the garden. Since Moriyama's punishment, the atmosphere within the palace had been remarkably calm. Fukuda and Haizaki had remained polite whenever they crossed paths, especially now that Haizaki and Chiharu shared the same rank. If Ryuna's position were raised as well, Haizaki would no doubt refrain from bothering her. But how could that happen? Ryuna found herself lost in thought, as it seemed there was only one way forward.

"I must bear children," she said suddenly, her voice determined.

Kouka sputtered, clearly surprised by the declaration.

Chiharu, too, looked at her quizzically. "Why the sudden change in thought?"

Ryuna often found herself frustrated by Kouka and Chiharu's indifference toward the emperor. Kouka feared Emperor Seijuurou, but Chiharu showed no interest in palace life at all, a thought that irked Ryuna to no end.

"If I bear a child, His Imperial Majesty would raise my rank. No one would dare to trouble me again."

Kouka and Chiharu exchanged a glance, both startled by Ryuna's words.

"Ryuna..." Chiharu began, her voice hesitant.

Ryuna pressed her lips together, a look of resolve crossing her face. "Isn't a child the only hope one has in the palace? The etiquette instructor said so. Especially if it were a boy..."

Though Ryuna was not as quick-witted as Chiharu, she understood the ways of the palace all too well. The Crimson Forbidden City was the capital of women, a place where only the most beautiful women in the Teikou Empire resided. Yet, even the most radiant beauty could not escape the ravages of time. Youth and beauty were fleeting, and time—unforgiving—was the enemy of every woman in the palace.

The emperor's concubines were selected every three years, a constant influx of new, beautiful women with a singular goal: to win the emperor's favour. While Emperor Seijuurou still visited her the most, Ryuna knew she could not rely on this forever. She had to seize her chance while she still had it. Bearing a child, she was certain, would ensure her position. If she had a child—especially a son—her place in the palace would be secure.

At Moon Pavilion:

Upon returning from the park, Haizaki Shiina was visibly upset.

"That useless Moriyama is gone!" she cursed, her voice thick with disdain. "And yet Mayuzumi continues to smile! She has been bestowed with the rank of Noble Lady, likely because the Empress took pity on her. Now her position is equal to mine! At this rate, she will rise above me entirely!"

"Please, Noble Lady Shiina, try to calm yourself," Fukuda Hiroko said, her voice gentle yet firm in an attempt to placate her.

"Calm down?!" Shiina growled, her patience wearing thin. "How am I supposed to calm down?" She paused, her frustration palpable. "I've had to be civil with that trio lately, all because of Moriyama's failed attempt on Mayuzumi's life. Thankfully, I wasn't implicated, for it wasn't I who sent Moriyama. But every time I think of Mayuzumi, Sakurai, and Furihata... I really want to kill three of them."

There was a brief silence as Hiroko considered her words carefully.

"Does Noble Lady Shiina wish to deal with all three of them at once?" Hiroko asked, her eyes narrowing with quiet calculation.

"Of course!" Shiina responded without hesitation, her voice dripping with malice. She regarded Hiroko with a mixture of admiration and expectation. "You're smarter than the others. Do you have an idea?"

Hiroko nodded, a small but confident smile tugging at her lips. "I overheard them talking on their way back to the palace. Sakurai desires a son."

"What?" Shiina's eyes widened in disbelief. "Sakurai, who appears so innocent and naïve... Turns out she's as ambitious as the rest. One truly cannot judge a book by its cover."

Hiroko's confidence grew as she continued, her voice calm but decisive. "This could be the perfect opportunity for us. I only ask that you, Noble Lady Shiina, be patient and wait for the right moment. And also..." She hesitated briefly, her gaze unwavering, "...I will need people who are willing to sacrifice themselves."

A sly, calculating smile spread across Shiina's face as she processed the words. "Then I will ask my father to arrange everything."

At Pavilion of Joy:

As the end of spring approached, the time had come to leave the Crimson Forbidden City for the Mountain Resort Chiba, the summer residence of the imperial family located in Kaijou province. The change in location was a welcome respite for all the concubines, and none more so than Furihata Kouka.

She stood before her trunks, carefully inspecting her belongings.

"What else should I bring?" Kouka muttered to herself. "I hope this is enough."

Mao, her ever-attentive personal servant, looked up from her task and offered a reassuring smile. "Everything is available there, My Lady. You need not worry about it."

Kouka raised an eyebrow. "Have you been there before?"

Mao nodded, her expression turning fond as she spoke of the place. "Yes, My Lady. Mountain Resort Chiba is quite beautiful. The estate is divided into four main areas: the palace area, where we will be staying; the lake area; the grass area; and the mountain area."

Kouka's eyes widened in fascination. "It sounds wonderful."

"It is indeed," Mao replied with a hint of nostalgia. "We are free to move about the palace area and the lake area. However, entry to the grass and mountain areas requires permission. It is easy to lose one's way without a guide, and the wildlife there can be rather dangerous."

Kouka's excitement grew at the thought of exploring such a place. "I can't wait for tomorrow," she said, a smile tugging at her lips. "It will be an adventure."

Mao nodded, her smile turning warm. "I am certain you will enjoy it, My Lady."

As Kouka prepared for the journey ahead, her thoughts wandered to the beauty and mysteries of the mountain resort. It promised to be a refreshing escape from the palace, though little did she know that the change of scenery would soon bring new challenges, intrigues, and revelations.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The journey to Mountain Resort Chiba took several days by horse-drawn carriage, and as expected, thousands of people were part of this yearly expedition. After several days of travel, they finally arrived at their destination. Sakurai Ryuna gazed around in awe, her eyes wide with admiration. The resort was breathtaking. The existing buildings harmoniously blended with the surrounding natural beauty, enhancing the landscape rather than detracting from it.

"Welcome to Mountain Resort Chiba," a chorus of voices greeted as an army of eunuchs stood waiting, each assigned as a guide for the various concubines.

A young eunuch approached Ryuna, introducing himself as Eunuch Jun. After a brief exchange, they began their journey through the resort. Like the Crimson Forbidden City, every concubine had been assigned a residence for the next three months, and Eunuch Jun eagerly shared details about the resort as they walked.

"As the second center of political power for the Great Teikou Empire," Eunuch Jun explained, "the architecture and layout of Mountain Resort Chiba were designed to mirror the Crimson Forbidden City in the capital, but with a more naturalistic touch. The resort seamlessly integrates lush greenery, with palaces, gardens, lakes, and temples scattered across the landscape."

They wound through several picturesque streets, and soon, they arrived at a magnificent pavilion. The architecture was even more stunning up close, with intricate carvings and delicate statues adorning the outer walls.

"We have arrived, My Lady," said Eunuch Jun with a respectful bow. "My Lady is expected to pay her respects to the Empress at Pine Crane Hall at the beginning of each week."

Ryuna nodded, grateful for the information.

"I shall take my leave then," Eunuch Jun said, bowing once more before retreating.

A young maid was waiting at the entrance of the pavilion. "Welcome to Rose Pavilion, My Lady," she said with a respectful curtsy. "I am Aki, and I will serve you during your stay here. I have prepared tea and snacks, as I understand the journey must have been exhausting."

Ryuna smiled, grateful for the warm reception. Aki seemed kind and attentive, a comfort after the long journey.

Entering the Rose Pavilion, Ryuna couldn't help but be impressed. The space was even grander than her residence in the palace. The pavilion boasted expansive windows that allowed fresh air to flow freely, filling the room with a refreshing breeze. The soft scent of flowers and greenery surrounded her. The pavilion even had its own private garden, with a small gazebo overlooking a serene pond next to it. It was peaceful, a perfect place for rest and reflection.

As Ryuna settled into her new home for the next few months, she felt a sense of quiet contentment. Despite the challenges that awaited her, this place was undoubtedly a beautiful retreat from the pressures of the palace.

"Please, My Lady."

Ryuna stared at the purplish-blue cake on the table in confusion. It was the first time she had ever seen such a strange-colored cake. Was it safe to eat?

As if sensing Ryuna's hesitation, Aki quickly explained, "Your servant made this cake with blueberries, My Lady. Berries are known to have many health benefits for women."

Ryuna's eyes widened in curiosity. "Health benefits?" she asked, intrigued.

"I apologize, My Lady, if I have said anything improper," Aki added, her expression filled with worry, concerned she might have offended her mistress.

"No, no, I am very pleased to hear this," Ryuna reassured her, smiling. "Are there other foods that are good for a woman's health?"

"There are many, My Lady. Foods such as seaweed, salmon, green vegetables, oysters, and nuts are all considered beneficial."

Ryuna's face brightened. "Then, you must cook these for me every day."

"Your servant understands," Aki replied, nodding with a smile.

Ryuna felt a wave of contentment. Among all the concubines in the palace, Emperor Seijuurou visited her the most, and with the right foods and care, she was hopeful that her chances would improve. She eagerly anticipated the days ahead, confident that her efforts would pay off.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The next morning, Sakurai Ryuna woke up with a stomach ache. Both Anko and Aki were immediately concerned for their mistress' wellbeing.

"Your servant will call a doctor," said Aki, her face filled with worry.

"Wait!" Ryuna suddenly called out. She just remembered something important.

"Yes, My Lady?" Aki asked, pausing.

"Don't let Chiharu or Kouka know that I'm sick. I don't want to worry them," Ryuna hastily requested.

"Your servant understands," Aki replied, nodding, and she quickly went away to fulfill her instructions.

Ryuna sighed, relieved to have kept her discomfort a secret. She knew Chiharu would be the first to lecture her, and though Kouka would be sympathetic, she didn't want to burden her friends with worry.

Soon, Aki returned with a middle-aged doctor.

"Doctor Yamada has come, My Lady," Aki said.

After examining her, Doctor Yamada smiled reassuringly. "It's just a stomach ache, My Lady, caused by eating too many fruits. There's nothing serious to worry about."

Ryuna sighed in relief.

"My Lady, while berries like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are good for your health, eating them in excess can upset your stomach," Doctor Yamada advised. "I will prescribe a supplement to help balance your health."

Ryuna's eyes brightened at the mention of a supplement. "A supplement?" she repeated eagerly.

"Yes, My Lady," Doctor Yamada confirmed. "A remedy that can enhance your overall well-being."

After a brief pause, Ryuna gathered her courage and asked, "Do you have any remedies or supplements to improve fertility?"

Doctor Yamada raised an eyebrow, taken aback by her directness, but nodded after a moment. "My Lady, there is an prescription recipe passed down through generations. It's known to support fertility and help with conception. If you'd like, I can provide it for you."

Ryuna's heart quickened with anticipation. This was exactly what she'd hoped for. "Please give me the recipe," she said, her voice full of determination.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

The next day, Chiharu and Kouka were taken aback by Ryuna's story.

"Are you out of your mind?" Chiharu asked, her voice a mix of concern and disbelief. "How could you trust him so easily?"

"I'm not that naive," Ryuna muttered, feeling slightly annoyed. "I copied the prescription into two parts and asked Anko to take it to the clinic here. The doctor there confirmed that the herbs listed are safe and beneficial for health."

Both Chiharu and Kouka stared at the piece of paper in Ryuna's hands. The recipe was accompanied by a list of foods to eat and precautions to follow, all aimed at improving her fertility.

"Everything looks fine," Kouka said, studying the paper closely.

Chiharu, however, was more hesitant. "I still don't support you going through with this," she said firmly. "I don't trust that doctor. It's better to wait until we return to the Crimson Forbidden Palace and consult the doctors there for confirmation."

Ryuna's expression faltered as she pouted. "Fine, fine," she said, trying to hide her disappointment.

Chiharu sighed in relief, thinking she had convinced Ryuna to take the safer route.

What Chiharu didn't know was that, despite her objections, Ryuna had already started secretly consuming the herbal medicine behind her back, determined to take matters into her own hands.

At the Pine Crane Hall...

Tetsuya was conversing with Satsuki, his close friend and sister-in-law, when Aida Riko entered the room.

"Your Majesty, Imperial Princess," Riko greeted with a respectful bow.

Tetsuya acknowledged her with a nod. "What is it, Riko?"

"Attendant Ryuna has requested a doctor. The prescribed medication appears to be for stomach ailments," Riko replied, her tone steady and professional.

Tetsuya and Satsuki exchanged a glance, their expressions a mixture of concern and curiosity.

"Who is attending to her?" Tetsuya inquired.

"Doctor Yamada, Your Highness," Riko answered.

Tetsuya furrowed his brow. "I have not heard of a Doctor Yamada," he remarked thoughtfully. His late grandfather had been the renowned Imperial Physician, and Tetsuya had grown up under his influence. He knew every doctor in the palace personally—indeed, one might say they all served under his command.

"Doctor Yamada is a recent addition to the palace, Your Majesty. He also works exclusively at the Mountain Resort in Chiba," Riko explained, her expression neutral.

"I see," Tetsuya said slowly, his gaze sharpening. "I want a full investigation into his background. Ensure there are no discrepancies or causes for concern."

"Of course, Your Majesty. I shall make the necessary arrangements at once," Riko responded with a bow before retreating from the room.

Satsuki turned to Tetsuya, her expression filled with worry. "Tetsuya, do you think something is amiss with this doctor?"

Tetsuya's face remained stoic, but the intensity in his eyes spoke volumes. "I intend to find out. There is something about this that does not sit right with me."

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Later that night at the Pine Crane Hall...

Akashi Seijuurou gazed at his wife, who had fallen asleep on the couch, a small smile of amusement playing on his lips. It seemed that Tetsuya had drifted off while waiting for him. The day had been long, filled with countless documents demanding his attention, and it was well past midnight when Seijuurou had finally returned. He approached Tetsuya gently and, with careful hands, lifted him from the couch.

"Hmmm..." Tetsuya stirred, blinking his eyes open, his expression groggy and disoriented.

"You have fallen asleep, Tetsuya," Seijuurou said softly. "Allow me to take you to bed."

Tetsuya, still half-asleep, responded by burying his face against the curve of Seijuurou's neck, seeking the comfort of his warmth. Seijuurou could not help but chuckle at how endearing Tetsuya was, even in such a state.

Once they reached their chambers, Seijuurou placed Tetsuya gently on the bed. Tetsuya, already drowsy, seemed to drift back into a peaceful slumber almost immediately. Seijuurou watched him for a moment, his heart swelling with affection. Tetsuya looked so serene in his sleep, his features softened, his breath steady.

With a tender smile, Seijuurou leaned over and pressed a light kiss to Tetsuya's forehead, his fingers brushing through Tetsuya's hair before he began to remove his own attire. Once undressed, he slid under the covers beside Tetsuya, pulling the warm blankets over both of them. He let out a quiet sigh of contentment as he drew Tetsuya close, holding him in his arms.

From the days when they had been two young boys, unfamiliar with each other, to becoming friends, then lovers, and now, husband and wife. Their journey had been long and fraught with challenges, yet here they were, side by side. Seijuurou had been compelled to take a wife when he came of age, a duty expected of him as the heir to the throne. Yet, despite the political necessities, he had made sure that Tetsuya was crowned Empress when he ascended the throne.

As Emperor, Seijuurou understood the necessity of having a successor to the throne. His duty to the empire demanded that he take multiple concubines, ensuring he would have numerous heirs. Seijuurou was aware that among his concubines, some harboured ambitions to replace Tetsuya in his heart, perhaps even as Empress. But Seijuurou would never allow that. His commitment to Tetsuya was unshakeable, and he would not tolerate anyone or anything that posed a threat to his beloved's position. His protection of Tetsuya was paramount, and he would go to any length to safeguard Tetsuya's place by his side.

Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The time had come for the concubines to pay their respects to the Empress. Since it was her first visit here, Kouka decided to leave early, fearful that she might lose her way and arrive late. On her way there, she encountered Ryuna and Chiharu, who, it seemed, had the same idea. Ryuna, in particular, had once been late and had nearly caused a grave offence to the Empress.

They walked together along the winding path toward the Pine Crane Hall, a small yet elegant palace. The rear of the palace was bordered by a tranquil lake, surrounded by lush green trees, while the front was adorned with fields of hydrangeas in full bloom, their vivid colours of pink, blue, and purple painting the landscape in a breathtaking array. The sight was simply magnificent.

During her time at the palace, Kouka had come to realise that blue was a colour reserved exclusively for the Empress. Except during formal ceremonies, the Empress was always seen in garments of varying shades of blue. Even his headdress, which was a work of intricate craftsmanship, was predominantly blue, with occasional accents of pink, red and gold. As for the concubines, the Palace Household Bureau had never allocated blue fabric for their attire. In fact, it was a colour that was not available for request, further emphasising its exclusivity to the Empress alone.

They arrived first, though it wasn't long before the other concubines joined them.

Soon, Eunuch Yuta appeared. "My Ladies," he announced, his voice steady. "Please follow your servant." He led them down a corridor that opened into the rear of the palace, where a large terrace offered a sweeping view of the serene lake. Kouka felt the soft breeze on her skin, a clear sign that the location had been chosen for its refreshing coolness, likely to provide relief from the heat of the day. "Your Majesty and the Imperial Princess are waiting," he added.

The concubines exchanged brief, curious glances, each wondering what to expect.

Empress Tetsuya was already seated upon his throne, awaiting their arrival. In contrast to his usual resplendent attire, today his hair was simply adorned with blue and red butterfly hairpins, their tassels delicately swaying, and small golden flowers scattered throughout. The intricate headdress he typically wore had been set aside, no doubt due to the oppressive heat of the day. However, it wasn't just the Empress in attendance—there was another presence. A beautiful young woman, dressed in a striking red gown, sat beside the Empress. Her long, pink hair was styled meticulously, secured with a gem-encrusted hairpin that shimmered subtly in the ambient light. This, without a doubt, was Imperial Princess Satsuki, Seijuurou's half-sister. The Akashi Imperial core family was small, the late Emperor Masaomi, in his time, had fathered only two children: Seijuurou and Satsuki.

"Grace to Your Majesty," the concubines intoned in unison. "May Heaven bestow health and happiness upon Your Majesty the Empress. Grace to Imperial Princess, may Heaven bestow health and happiness upon Imperial Princess."

Empress Tetsuya gave a subtle nod, his expression serene and impassive. "You may rise."

"Thank you for your kindness, Your Majesty," the concubines replied in unison, rising gracefully before taking their designated seats.

"Welcome to Mountain Resort Chiba," Empress Tetsuya said, his voice calm yet carrying the authority of his position. "This is your first time here, I trust. I hope you will all live peacefully in this place."

"Do not cause trouble here," Imperial Princess Satsuki added, her sharp gaze sweeping over each of the concubines, assessing them closely.

"We understand, Your Majesty. We understand, Imperial Princess," the concubines responded, bowing once more in deference. "Thank you for your guidance."

"You may leave now," Empress Tetsuya commanded, his voice final.

One month had passed. Chiharu, Ryuna, and Kouka had spent their time exploring the vast expanse of the Mountain Resort Chiba. Every day, they discovered new corners of the expansive grounds. Today, for instance, they found themselves at the Lake Area. As the name suggested, the area featured eight artificial lakes. At that moment, they sat in a gazebo on the shore of Lotus Lake, where the pink lotus flowers were in full bloom. The sight was truly breathtaking.

"Would you like to eat some lotus seeds?" Kouka asked, breaking the peaceful silence.

"Sounds delightful," Chiharu replied with a smile.

"I shall fetch them for you, My Lady," Mao offered. With a respectful bow, she walked to the edge of the lake, selecting some large, ripe lotus seeds.

"Thank you, Mao," Kouka said graciously, her eyes following Mao as she collected the seeds.

Sitting leisurely while enjoying the lotus seeds felt like a rare luxury. It was a different atmosphere from the palace—more relaxed, less bound by the strict rules that governed life there. Aside from the weekly morning greetings to the Empress, their time was free. For Kouka, it almost felt like a holiday, a period of exploration and freedom. Since her arrival in the palace, this was the most relaxed she had ever felt. If she could, she would stay here forever, never returning to the rigid confines of the imperial palace.

"Look over there," Kouka suddenly said, breaking the peaceful silence.

The others turned to see a procession across the lake. Judging by the size of the entourage and the distinctive attributes, it was clearly the procession of Empress Tetsuya and Imperial Princess Satsuki.

"Imperial Princess Satsuki has been staying here for a month as well, along with her children," Chiharu remarked thoughtfully. "The capital is sweltering at the moment. I've heard that the Empress has not been well. The heat is unbearable for him, so every year, as the spring ends, we leave the capital and return in early autumn."

Kouka merely nodded in response. Coming from Seirin, where her father held only a modest position, she had little knowledge of the intricate workings of the imperial family.

"I'm so tired," Ryuna suddenly complained, drawing Kouka's attention.

Kouka looked at her, concern flickering in her eyes. Lately, Ryuna had been constantly complaining of fatigue and a lack of appetite, likely due to the oppressive heat. "Would you like to go back?" she asked kindly.

Chiharu glanced at Ryuna, then at Kouka, her expression softening. "Perhaps we should head back."

"Alright," Kouka agreed, nodding. Together, they walked back toward Ryuna's residence, their footsteps slow and measured as they enjoyed the respite from the heat.

That evening, they gathered for dinner, and the main dish was a delicious chicken barbecue. After the meal, they enjoyed a refreshing plum drink to cleanse their palates and alleviate the greasiness of the food.

"It's so refreshing to drink this," Kouka remarked, taking a satisfied sip.

Ryuna was about to drink hers as well when she suddenly paused. She placed the cup back on the dining table, her face wrinkling in discomfort.

"Ryuna, what's wrong with you?" Chiharu asked, her voice filled with concern. "Are you alright?"

"I think I ate too much chicken earlier," Ryuna replied, her voice subdued. "Now, I feel nauseous. I think I might vomit."

Chiharu and Kouka exchanged a brief, concerned glance.

"Have you been feeling nauseous recently?" Kouka asked gently, a thought forming in her mind. Could it be what she suspected?

"Yes," Ryuna admitted, looking somewhat embarrassed. "I haven't been eating properly the past week because of the summer heat. But I mentioned that to both of you."

"In addition to the nausea, have you been feeling particularly tired lately?" Kouka asked again, her tone soft but insistent.

Ryuna nodded, looking slightly apprehensive.

"Have you received your 'monthly letter'?" Chiharu asked bluntly, her eyes fixed on Ryuna.

"Chiharu!" Ryuna protested, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "Why are you asking me that?" she grumbled, trying to avoid the topic.

"Just answer me," Chiharu pressed, unbothered by Ryuna's discomfort.

Ryuna hesitated before replying, "I think it's been more than half a month late."

A heavy silence fell over the table.

"What is wrong with both of you?" Ryuna asked, clearly confused by their serious expressions.

Kouka exchanged another glance with Chiharu, who seemed to have reached the same conclusion. Kouka thought it might be due to both of them being the eldest children in their families; they had witnessed their mothers' pregnancies with their younger siblings, and so recognised the signs.

"We should call the doctor," Kouka murmured quietly.

"Am I sick?" Ryuna asked, looking uncertain. "Call Doctor Yamada then."

"I think you're pregnant," Chiharu said at last, her voice calm but firm.

Ryuna's eyes widened in shock and disbelief. "What?" she exclaimed, as though she couldn't comprehend the words.

Doctor Yamada was summoned quickly, and after a thorough examination, he confirmed both Kouka and Chiharu's suspicions. Ryuna was indeed pregnant.

The news hit Ryuna like a wave. For a moment, she sat frozen, her mind struggling to catch up with the reality of the situation. Then, lowly, a soft laugh escaped her lips—a sound of pure astonishment and joy.

"I... I'm pregnant?" she whispered, as though testing the words in her mouth. A radiant smile spread across her face, growing wider with every passing second. Overcome with joy, Ryuna could hardly believe it. She had dreamed of this moment, and now it was a reality. Her wish had finally come true.

Not long after, Emperor Seijuurou and Empress Tetsuya, who had been promptly notified, arrived to visit, followed by their entourage.

"Grace to Your Imperial Majesty. Grace to Your Majesty," the concubines and attendants greeted in unison, bowing respectfully.

"You may rise," Emperor Seijuurou said. His eyes then moved toward Doctor Yamada, who stood nearby. "Is it true?" he inquired, his tone steady but filled with the weight of the moment.

"Congratulations to Your Imperial Majesty and the Lady," Doctor Yamada replied with a respectful bow. "Lady Ryuna is indeed pregnant, and has been for over a month."

A high-ranking eunuch stepped forward and, referencing the records, added, "Based on the documentation, Attendant Ryuna did serve Your Majesty approximately a month ago."

"I see," Emperor Seijuurou murmured, nodding thoughtfully. His gaze shifted toward Empress Tetsuya, whose impassive expression revealed nothing of his thoughts.

"Who are the personal maids attending to Lady Ryuna?" Empress Tetsuya asked, his voice flat.

"Your servants, Aki and Anko, are present," one of the maids answered, bowing deeply along with her companion.

"As Attendant Ryuna's personal maids," Empress Tetsuya continued, "both of you must ensure she receives the utmost care, particularly now that she is pregnant. Pay close attention to her diet and health."

"Your servants will obey the order, Your Majesty," Aki and Anko replied in unison, bowing again.

"We should ensure that a doctor attends to Attendant Ryuna as well," Empress Tetsuya remarked, his tone still as distant as ever, though there was a slight edge of concern beneath his usual demeanor.

"Your Majesty," Ryuna interjected quickly. "Doctor Yamada has been attending to me already. He is a reliable and experienced physician. Would it not be better to continue under his care?"

Empress Tetsuya considered this for a moment, then nodded in agreement. "Very well then," he said. "It is clear that you trust him. However, you must ensure that you take the best care of yourself."

"I will, Your Majesty. I promise."

"See that you do," Empress Tetsuya responded.

Chiharu had never seen Empress Tetsuya speak for so long. He usually addressed them with no more than one or two sentences before dismissing them, rarely interacting beyond the weekly morning greetings or official celebrations in the palace.

"You should take care of yourself too," Emperor Seijuurou said at last, directed at Ryuna.

"Thank you, Your Imperial Majesty," Ryuna replied, her cheeks flushing slightly from both the compliment and the attention.

Emperor Seijuurou turned his gaze to Empress Tetsuya. "It's already late. You should rest, Tetsuya," he said, extending his right hand toward the Empress, who accepted it without hesitation.

Together, they left the Rose Pavilion, followed by an entourage of maids and eunuchs.

Once the royal couple had departed, Ryuna could no longer contain her joy. She squealed, her voice filled with exuberance. "Finally! I'm pregnant with His Imperial Majesty's child! I've been waiting for this moment!" Her eyes sparkled with happiness.

"Congratulations, Ryuna!" Kouka said, her voice warm with sincerity, her own joy easily shared with her friend.

Even their maids smiled, caught up in the infectious happiness. The entire atmosphere in the room seemed lighter, brighter with Ryuna's exuberance.

Chiharu, however, remained quiet, her gaze thoughtful as she observed Ryuna and Kouka, both still immersed in their celebration. She had paid close attention to the reactions of both the Emperor and the Empress during the exchange. Empress Tetsuya's usually unreadable expression made it difficult to discern if he was pleased by the news. But at least, on the surface, he had shown some measure of attention, which was to be expected of him as both the Empress and the mother of the empire.

Emperor Seijuurou, on the other hand, had been another matter entirely. The Emperor had barely spoken, offering only the bare minimum of courtesy before turning to leave. He told Ryuna to take care of herself, but his words had lacked warmth, even when he spoke of her well-being. And from the moment he had entered until his departure, there was no joy in his expression, none of the usual pride one might expect from a father hearing of his impending child. Instead, there had been a coolness to his gaze, a lack of enthusiasm. Chiharu had even noticed a subtle but unmistakable flicker of displeasure in his eyes—something that didn't bode well for the future.
