AUTHOR'S NOTE: So after a long while of internal debating, I finally decided to make a sad alternate version where Cree actually does end up dying. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!
It was the second weekend since the hit and run incident. Abby was once again sitting on the couch at Sector V headquarters, humming softly to herself while she read through a book. Around 10 minutes passed until Nigel peered in from behind the corner-end of a wall. He proceeded to cautiously walk over to his teammate and draped his arm over the top of the sofa. Abby simply put a book-mark between the current pages she was on before closing her book. She looked at Nigel with an exhausted look, then sighed and shook her head.. ".. Numbah Five.." he began to stammer, not knowing exactly what to say. "I.. I know you're still worried about Cree-" Abby then softly interrupted him with a sigh.
"Yes, yes I am.. look, yes, Cree's a teenager and yes, we may have our constant disagreements.. but my sisterly love for her and all the memories shared between me and her before you-know-what.. are honestly enough to look past those disagreements, even if I never really show it.." she curled up and buried her face into her knees, glowering at the floor. "You guys may hate her, but MY connection with her goes FAR deeper than you know.." Abby explained as she began to choke up and bury her face into her knees. Nigel stood silent for a moment or two before sitting next to her. ".. you know what?.. I-I am not gonna let my fear of teenagers get in the way of having common decency, and that's how it will be for all of us moving forward.. your sister will be in our thoughts as long as it takes." Abby looked up a Nigel with a quivering smile and watery eyes, obviously touched by her friend's considerate words. Hugging him and crying into his red sweater, she choked out a small, raspy "T-thank you.." to which Nigel rubbed her back to calm her down..
Meanwhile, Delilah sat on her bed, quietly eating a lunch of two hotdogs and playing a game of "Feeding Frenzy" on her laptop. She wasn't feeling any better, or even any worse.. she just sat there, borderline emotionless with the exception of her drooping ears. Even as she got eaten by larger fish in the game, she didn't so much as scowl or grumble. Then she got a notification from a group chat with her friends. Sighing softly, she paused her game and opened up the tab:
"Hey there Lils, how ya holding up?" said Maurice through text. Delilah began typing..
"As good as I'm able right now.. had to babysit the Gilligans again, got home about an hour ago."
"I see, how were they this evening?"
"They were fairly pleased to see me again. Well.. atleast that "Hoagie" kid, but his little brother just stayed in his room the whole time. A lot quieter than last time.. I'm actually concerned.. are there any updates on Cree?.."
"Honestly, we're all on edge as of now. Cree's unfortunately still unresponsive.." Delilah pouted at this.
"My sanity will be forever lost if anything more happens to her.."
"I know.. the best we can do for now is wait. Heh.. but Cree's a tough girl, maybe something will happen.."
Delilah sighed before taking a few gulps from the soda on her night-stand. Then she resumed typing.
"Something better happen.. otherwise.." it was at this point that Maurice started to get worried.. he said, "Delilah.. PLEASE don't think like that.. the last thing we want right now is to lose another friend. We're here for you, alright?"
"ok.. just heard mama say it's bed time, so I think I'll need to hop off here for now. Gn-"
"nite nite"
With that, Delilah closed her laptop and set it next to her bed. She curled up in her blankets after turning on the radio and simply stared up at the ceiling for what seemed like hours, her eye-lids soon growing heavier until she finally drifted into a deep sleep.
Delilah's eyes instantly snapped open to a light blue, partially cloudy sky, accompanied by chilling breezes. Although her vision was blurry as heck, Delilah could've sworn a taller figure was right in front of her, which proceeded to take Delilah's hands in hers. This spooked her a bit at first, but she then heard it do a familiar raspy giggle.. she instantly knew it was Cree. Delilah blushed softly before giggling as she and the figure began frolicking around through what seemed to be a couple inches of white, fluffy snow..
Wait.. snow..?
Delilah's eye-sight had suddenly adjusted as she was caught off-guard by the cold, wintry blanket. She looked around more thoroughly this time.. and then it hit her. She was at the back-road near the entrance of the woods.. the same place of the hit-and-run.. Delilah also realized Cree wasn't near her anymore, but now kneeling in the road as that same vehicle came speeding down the pavement.
"CREE, LOOK OUT!!" Delilah called out as she tried to rush towards her, but she couldn't move so much as an inch.. it was like an unseen force was holding her back, but just as the speeding car made contact with Cree, everything went black.
After several moments of darkness, Delilah could see a bright, golden light get progressively closer to her. She then looked down at her feet, and where there used to be snow, were white, fluffy clouds. Could this be.. the afterlife?..
As Delilah slowly walked and looked around, a bright glow flourished right in front of her, causing her to squint her eyes for a few seconds until they adjusted.. then she saw what the light came from..
What stood before her was Cree, now in the form of a beautiful angel.. with big, white feathery wings, a long white cloak which reached just below her knees, and a shiny, golden halo floating above her dreads. Even Cree's amber eyes glistened in the sun light as she and Delilah floated towards each other. "C-Cree?.." Delilah choked out, her eyes glimmering. "y-you.."
"I'm free now, Lily.. all my pain is gone." Delilah's eyes began to glisten with tears before squeezing shut. Delilah hung her head and let out a few whimpering sobs, before Cree gave a gentle smile before wrapping her arms and wings around the wolf-eared girlfriend in a warm, loving hug. "I'm sorry Scruffy.. it was just too much for my body to take.." Delilah returned the embrace as she sobbed quietly and shed more tears, which seemed to evaporate from her angel friend's warmth. For as long as they both floated there in each other's arms, Delilah felt her sense of security rise up again.. like nothing could harm her at this moment.
After a good while, the two started to drift apart.. Cree continued to smile, a couple tears making tracks down her cheeks. Delilah forced a smile back, meekly waving farewell..
Delilah's eyes suddenly snapped open, and she took a few breaths before looking at her alarm clock.. it read 5:30am. Delilah's cell phone then started vibrating, causing her to flinch a little. She picked it up, flipping it open.. it was Maurice. Pressing the green button on the bottom half and holding it to her ear.
"H-Hello?" after a couple seconds, she heard what could only be described as shaky breathing on the other end, ".. I-I just got off the phone with Abby.. th-they--" all of a sudden, Maurice let out a quiet whimper-like sob into his hand. Delilah's heart began to race, trying to prepare herself for what was said next.. but to no avail.
"u-uh.. they.. they just lost her.."
