Goku was speaking with Whis. Goku never fully understood how to use Ultra Instinct better.

"I just can't keep my heart calm like you do, Whis." Goku sighs

"That's understandable." Whis replies "As I am an Angel, I am fundamentally different from you."

"So, how do I learn to use Ultra Instinct better?" Goku asks

"How many times do I have to tell you?" Whis asks with a sigh.

"It's up to you to discover your own unique version of Ultra Instinct."

"I just don't understand how." Goku says

"Listen to the voice within you." Whis replies "What are you really?"

Goku's eyes widen in confusion. "What am I...?"

"Once you figure that out, you'll know exactly what you need to do. Think about it." Whis says before ending the communication with Goku.

Whis' question hit Goku like a train. Goku had spent years thinking he knew exactly who he was, what he was, but now? Now he wasn't sure. Goku was so sure of himself, but now he questioned everything. When he thought about it, he wasn't ever the person he believed himself to be.

For years he thought he was a simple Earthling, until Raditz told him who he was, what he was. Then he carried on with life knowing he was a Saiyan and knew nothing more.

Now, Goku had these vague memories in the back of his mind. Goku remembered looking out of the little red window of his pod. His mother and father looking in. His mother's face filled with worry and hurt. His father had a determined smile on his face as he placed an open hand on the window as he said "Stay alive..."Goku had reached out his small hand, placing it on the window in line with his fathers hand. The vague feelings of sadness, confusion and pain. He didn't want to go. He didn't understand fully what was happening or where he was going. His pod shot up into the sky, leaving the planet behind, heading into space, away to somewhere safe, to a place that would be his new home... Earth.

Goku had to find a way to understand what kind of person he was, him being unsure was not going to help him achieve Ultra Instinct the way he hopes to.

The trip home left Goku silent the entire time, which came as a surprise to Vegeta as Goku was always one for chatting his ear off.

The silence from Goku left Vegeta feeling rather perplexed. He wondered what was going through Goku's mind. Had Whis' words really got him thinking that much? It was only a simple question, but a question that seemed to wrack the younger Saiyan's brain. Vegeta didn't dwell on it too much, he enjoyed the silence.

Once back on Earth, Goku silently headed home. He had a lot of thinking to do and didn't feel up to socialising all that much.

"Goku! You're back!" Chi-Chi says cheerfully

"Yeah." Goku replies

"Are you okay?" Chi-Chi asks noticing Goku's change in his usual ways

"I'm fine." Goku lies "I just have some things on my mind."

"O-okay." Chi-Chi says eying her husband carefully "You hungry?"

"I am, yes." Goku answers

"Good, I've just finished up dinner!" Chi-Chi says with a smile.

Chi-Chi calls Goten to the table as Goku enters the kitchen.

Food was neatly laid out, large portions set for the hungry Saiyan's.

Goku eats silently, and carefully, as if not to rush so much. Chi-Chi eyed Goku again, noticing how Goku was not even eating as he usually did.

Goku was just stuck in his own thoughts, sifting through his memories and past, trying to analyse them all, seeing if he could piece himself together in a way he could understand. This was no easy task. He realised this would take time, but he had to do it. If he was to find a unique version of Ultra Instinct that was truly his own, this is what he had to do, no matter what.

Each memory shifted through his brain with speed. Grandpa Gohan, Training, the first time he met Vegeta, the first time he transformed into the Super Saiyan of legend, the enemies he fought and defeated, the tournaments he took part in, Vegeta becoming an ally, the friends he made over the years, every time he reached a new form, all of it. It was like he was reliving his life all over again. He was trying to pluck bits and pieces out of each memory that could possibly tell him what he was. The path his life took surely should give him that.

Goku had an early night, worn from the days events.

As he slept, Whis' words played in his dreams "What are you really?"

Flashes of his past followed. Just little bits and pieces, some good, some bad. A mixture of choices he made in his life that made Goku understand that one thing he was for sure, was imperfect. He made mistakes, choices that could have been better made, thought through better. Other choices that were the best at the time, what needed to be done, what worked. The mercy he showed to others he felt was something that was both good and bad. It brought him new friends, Vegeta, Yamcha, Piccolo... but other times, it never went to plan, like with Frieza. He gave many of his enemies a chance to be better, and they just didn't want to be, they were stuck in their own destructive ways, which either caused problems in the future to caused Goku to end them for good. There were so many things to factor in when it came to finding out what Goku was, but it was all so important.
