"Help her!" Marcus pleaded, his voice broken and trembling. "Please."
Trish swallowed hard, then stepped forward. "Marcus, you need to go and help Dante and Nero."
"Fuck them!" Marcus snapped. "Save Kat!"
"We will!" Trish snapped. "But it will take time! In the meantime, you need to go and help the others! If Mundus wins, it won't matter if we save Kat, because the entire world will burn, her included!"
Marcus stared at her for a moment, then nodded, kissing Kat's forehead before transforming into his newest Devil form and taking off.
"You have a way to save her?" Lucia asked.
"No," Trish shook her head. "And he'll kill me for lying. But only after he's saved the world."
"Hey, isn't this Vergil's sword?" Lady asks, lifting the bloodied lower half of the weapon. "Man, Marcus really didn't hold back any."
Trish's eyes widened as she stared at the weapon, reaching out to the blade. As soon as her fingers touched the blade, she sucked in a harsh breath, yanking her fingers back, but narrowed her eyes. "That sword's filled with Mundus's corrupt power. Don't touch it, Lady. It'll turn you...into..."
"What?" Lady asked.
"Into a devil!" Trish said as though having a revelation. "It corrupts human DNA into devil DNA!"
"So?" Lady asked.
"So, if she's part devil-" Trish began.
"A Gold Orb could bolster her life force!" Lucia gasped. "But her heart would need to be beating."
"Your lightning!" Lady said instantly. "You can force her heart to beat fo her while the sword works, and then Lucia can go grab the Gold Orb and bring it back, and-"
"It's too far!" Lucia shook her head. "That would be hours of flying. Bad enough to have to go one way." She glanced after Marcus, then knelt, stabbing the sword into Kat's abdomen. "Lady, we'll have to leave you here."
Lady sighed, nodding, and Trish began to glow with a golden aura as she lifted Kat, electricity crackling along her body and then into Kat.
"You lead, I'll follow."
Kat threw her arms around Marcus, sobbing out a laugh and kissing him, Marcus returning the kiss in kind.
"I thought I'd lost you," Marcus smiled.
"You would have, if not for Vergil's sword, Trish's lightning and quick thinking, and Lucia's hoarder tendencies," Kat admitted.
"I resent that," Lucia said, handing both Marcus and Nero a small, green crystal with a screaming face carved into one side.
Both obediently crushed it, and while their bodies didn't immediately return to perfect condition, their energy returned a bit, allowing their bodies to heal themselves more quickly.
"How?" Marcus asked.
"It's a long story," Kat answered. "Later. For now..."
Marcus nodded, turning to look at Mundus, just as Dante finally ripped a black and orange sphere from Mundus's chest, then crushed it. The resulting explosion barely affected Dante, but Mundus was sent crashing to the ground in a roar of agony. Then, the ground below Mundus shattered, dropping him into the Demon Ream once more. The effect was instant, and as the rift began to glow with magic sigils around its edges, it began to shrink, the stone remaining behind but the rift revealing water where the hole had been. All three Sparda descendants flew over to stare down through the hole, watching as Sparda struggled and failed to fend off Mundus. He was wielding his spectral swords, but he clearly wasn't strong enough. Marcus glanced at the sword Dante had given him. A fragment of the Sparda sword.
"Where's his sword?" Marcus asked.
"I absorbed it," Dante sighed. "Well, guess I'll have to help."
Nero and Marcus nodded, but before the three could jump in, Kat caught Marcus's hand.
"What are you doing!?" Kat asked, eyes wide.
Marcus smiled, giving her a quick kiss. "It's alright, Kat. I won't be gone long. I promise." He pulled off his Nephilim Crystal, slipping it over her head to hang beside her own. "I'll be back for this in a couple of days. Alright?"
"You'd better!" Kat said, struggling to act strong.
"I will," Marcus smiled, then pitched backward into the rift.
Which began to seal rapidly behind him. After about a minute of plummeting through a shrinking tunnel, Marcus had arrived, watching as Dante and Nero both rocketed around and around Mundus, their blades tearing through his now much smaller form. Marcus grinned, joining them, as did Sparda. Except, just as Marcus passed Sparda, he shoved the fragment of Sparda's own sword into his hand, and it shone, transforming into a sword with a blade a bit shorter than Dante's preference, a W-shaped guard, and a pommel with a pair of miniature skulls fused back to back, their faces aligned with the edges of the blade, and with a metal spike extending out of those two metal skulls.
"Thank you, Marcus," Sparda smiled. "I have missed being able to wield Force Edge."
And then, he'd taken on a devil form as well. His body was thinner than what Dante fought Mundus as, looking more lean muscle than bulk, and Force Edge didn't transform into a replica Sparda sword, but Sparda took off, beginning to use Force Edge to help the others shave down Mundus's body. Mundus roared in defiance, hands all over his body beginning to fire off a massive flood of bloody red energy spears, but all of them began to avoid them skillfully. Mundus's strikes had slowed considerably. Mundus fired off enormous beams of shining, white, demonic energy, but they all avoided the beam. Dante's sword tore down across Mundus's torso, and Mundus roared, swinging hard at Dante, only for Marcus's spectral arm to yank Dante out of the way just before Marcus spun, his swords and both spectral arms' replica blades tearing through Mundus like a saw as he passed across Mondus's chest. And as soon as he was past the centerline, Nero flipped and spun as he passed up Mundus's front, flipping backward over and over as his heated blade shredded Mundus's flesh, severing countless hands. And as soon as he'd separated from Mundus's head, Sparda dropped behind Mundus, Force Edge splitting Mundus down the back. Mundus roared, hands extending toward them all, but they all traded swords for guns, Sparda using the pair his newly returned weapon provided for him, firing rapidly and shredding the hands. Mundus roared in agony, but suddenly, enormous sections of flesh began to slough off of him, Mundus's remaining body beginning to grow unstable and shrinking. Finally, all that remained of Mundus was little more than a mountain of gooey flesh and a trio of eyes on the top. And there, shining from deep inside of the mountain, was a fiery orange light with a pitch black center, the core Dante had mentioned. As one, all of them landed around Mundus and aimed their pistols at it and channeled their demonic power into them so heavily that they all slipped out of their demon forms.
"Jackpot!" Dante grinned
"Fuck off!" Nero roared.
"Go to Hell!" Marcus snarled, immediately regretting it as, even as they all fired and a barrage of shining, overcharged bullets exploded into Mundus, Dante snorted loudly.
Mundus shrieked in agony as his body began to swell and bulge. Then, finally, it erupted, the Devil Arm core exploding into a horrifyingly massive fireball of demonic energy.
"Go to Hell?" Dante grinned, once the explosion had faded.
"It was the first thing that jumped into my head, alright?" Marcus groaned. "I don't normally do catchphrases."
Dante laughed.
"You three did well," Sparda smiled. "You're powerful. But you can't stay here. The Mortal Realm is going to need you. Not all of Mundus's forces will have returned. There will be many who are able to stay."
"How do we get back?" Dante asked.
"Temen-ni-gru," Marcus answered instantly.
"Yes, but you must hurry," Sparda instructed him. "Without Mundus using it for his plot, it will soon close. You have three days. I have Credo guarding it until the last minute, when he is under instructions to pass through."
"Alright, let's go," Dante nodded.
"I'm not going," Sparda shook his head. "I had my time in the Mortal Realm. I had two beautiful sons. I got to meet my grandson and great grandson. And somewhere in this realm...is your mother, Dante."
"My...My mom?" Dante asked. "Well let's go-"
"No," Sparda shook his head. "This is something I must do. This is me and your mother's home now. I'll take up Mundus's throne. Keep the demons here under control. But you need to go home and deal with the ones that are still there."
"I'm not leaving you here alone, and if Mom is here, I'm going to help you find her!" Dante argued.
"Dante, your place is in the Mortal Realm," Sparda said. "Besides, you have a woman waiting for you to come home, don't you?"
Dante hesitated, clearly looking conflicted.
"She needs you to come home, Dante," Sparda pressed. "You still have a life to live."
Dante grit his teeth, but finally nodded, hugging his father. "Tell Mom I love her."
"I will," Sparda nodded, smiling.
Dante nodded, then turned away from Sparda, and everyone transformed again and took off, following Marcus through the air, Marcus warning it was a two-and-a-half day flight, so they'd be running dangerously close to too late. Finally, the tower came into view, and they sped forward rapidly, flying to the top of it and landing in a line before the beam of light and transforming back to their human forms. And there, standing guard, was Credo in his devil form.
"Credo!" Nero smiled, eyes watering.
"Nero," Credo smiled, then glanced at Nero's prosthetic arm. "You arm."
Nero glanced at it. "Unfortunately, we underestimated Mundus. It's fine, though. It's got its uses."
Credo nodded, glancing at the light. "It's about time to go. After you all."
They all nodded, walking forward into the light, and a moment later, they were exactly where Marcus and Kat had exited the Demon Realm. And everyone was waiting. Kat and Kyrie both sprinted forward instantly, Kat throwing herself into Marcus's arms and meeting him with a kiss while Kyrie kissed Nero for a moment, then lifted his prosthetic hand, her face filled with worry.
"Hey, it's alright," Nero smiled, cupping Kyrie's cheek. "It's not so different from my normal one. Just can't punch anything."
Dante walked past the two couples as Kyrie moved to fuss over Marcus as well. Lucia, Lady, and Trish had hung back, watching the others, and Dante stopped in front of the trio.
"You're back," Trish commented. "Again."
"Trish...I..." Dante struggled to get the words out, but he didn't need to.
Before he could continue, Trish stepped forward, pulling him into a kiss. Dante sighed in relief, kissing her back happily.
"About time," Lady snorted.
"Took long enough," Lucia agreed.
Finally, Trish pulled back, smirking. "I thought you'd never get around to being serious."
"Sorry," Dante smiled sheepishly. "I've wanted to do that for a very long time."
"You could have done it after we fought Mundus the first time," Trish smirked.
Just then, there was a flash of light, and everyone turned, staring as Credo finally appeared.
"C...Credo!" Kyrie sobbed and cheered, throwing her arms around him. "You're alive!"
"I am now," Credo nodded, then narrowed his eyes, looking around. "We have incoming."
"Lots of them," Marcus nodded as his Devil Bringer began to glow more brightly. "Guess we'll have to get back to work. I'm still down a sword."
"And I need to pick up Alastor to replace the Sparda," Trish agreed.
"Let's get to the shop," Dante suggested. "Credo, you wanna come?"
Credo nodded, and anyone who could fly transformed and picked up anyone who couldn't, flying them to the Devil May Cry shop. As soon as they were inside, Dante ran for the souvenir room.
"How long do we have?" Kat asked, transforming Pandora into her favored energy bow form.
"I'd give it about three minutes," Marcus guessed as Dante finally stepped back out.
"Marcus, I've got a weapon I think you'll like," Dante said, passing Alastor to Trish before holding out a metal skull with a pair of curved arms. "It's called Lucifer."
"It's ugly," Marcus commented dryly.
"It creates an endless supply of light, razor-sharp blades that also have the ability to explode," Dante explained.
Marcus hummed thoughtfully, then accepted the weapon. It shone and teleported onto the back of his left shoulder, and the arms extended. He tested its reach, the arms moving so that the clawed bend met his hand on either side, above his shoulders, down next to his legs, even between his legs, sword hilts extending from the opening next to the claws each time the arms moved to meet his hands. Finally, he grinned as he withdrew a pair of blades from the arms, both blades radiating a dark, red aura.
"Alright, I'll give it a chance," Marcus smirked. "I just need some guns."
"What, your shotgun's not good enough?" Dante asked.
"I want pistols," Marcus shrugged.
"Here," Lady said, handing him a pair of Heckler and Koch P30Ls. "We can give them infinite ammo like Dante's after we deal with this."
Marcus grinned, nodding, and holstered them, then looked outside. "Time's up. Let's get to work."
Dante grinned, kicking the door out of its frame before they all stepped out of the building, grinning as they stared at the flood of demons before them, the demons coming in all shapes and sizes and classes and types. Everything that had been present exiting the rift while Marcus and the others fought the Savior and Mundus.
"That was unnecessary," Credo commented, drawing his sword.
"Dante has a flair for the dramatic," Nero shrugged, resting the Red Queen on his left shoulder.
"So, the usual?" Trish asked, twirling Alastor, whose blade crackled with electricity excitedly.
"Most kills wins?" Lady grinned, holding up a pair of Berettas.
"Wins what?" Kat asked, swapping Pandora for Indra and Varuna.
"Well, Dante's too in debt to pay the winner, so for now, bragging rights," Lucia said, drawing her swords.
"Alright," Marcus grinned. "I'll count us down. Three...Two...One..."
A massive, stone spider, like a smaller, non-lava version of Phantom, crashed down before them and sounded the bell to begin the battle. A moment later, Nero had blasted it with his prosthetic as the others flooded past it, tearing into the other demons, beginning their bloody competition in a violent clash. Marcus couldn't help but laugh. He loved his family.
