Chapter 4

I own nothing

Derek's POV

Derek sat at his desk exhausted and frustrated. He hadn't slept since the day his baby girl

told him she loved him. His stress level with Savannah plus his unresolved long standing

feelings for Penelope had caused him to lash out at the one person he didn't want to. He

was happy enough with Savannah but it wasn't a love that set a fire in his soul like he felt

around Pen. But he and Pen had always been best friends. The timing was never right for

them or he would decide to back out of saying anything to her to keep from ruining that

friendship. She really was his God given solace and he couldn't stand the idea of losing her.

Now he had a pregnant fiance and the woman he had wanted for 11 years was saying

everything he had ever wanted to hear. Derek was raised to be an honorable man but for the

first time in his life he wished his mom hadn't done such a good job. He was beyond

frustrated. He also knew there was at least a grain of truth in what Penelope had told him.

Savannah was holding something back, keeping secrets. He had been denying it for weeks

but when Penelope said the words his mind went back to all the small things he had been

ignoring. Derek threw his pen on the desk and ran his hand over his face. It was time for

some straight talk from the women in his life. Derek stood and walked to Hotch's office.

"Hotch, I need to handle a few personal issues. Are you okay if I take off a little early?"

Hotch looks over from his conversation with Dave, hesitating for a moment. "Go ahead

Morgan. We will call with anything urgent."

Derek nods once, turns on his heel and heads back to his office to pack up.

Once he is gone and the door closed, Dave looks at Hotch. "You think he knows about

Kitten?"

Hotch looks at Dave and shakes his head slowly. "No. He's too calm. That storm hasn't hit

yet. Brace yourself. I think it's going to get worse before it gets better." Dave Rossi nods

slowly and sighs in agreement. It's going to be rocky days ahead for the BAU.

Derek pulled his truck into the driveway and sat looking at his house, trying to collect his

thoughts and decide how to start this conversation with Savannah. She had been acting

strange since the first obstetrics visit but had excused it as nerves. Now, with Garcia's

words in his ear, he wondered if that was really all it was. He didn't like the direction his

mind went and certainly didn't like doubting Savannah. Knowing the only way to get it all out

in the open was to talk to her, Derek sighed, stepped out of the truck and walked to the front

door.

As he started to call out for Savannah, he heard her voice in the kitchen and began walking

that direction. He saw her with with her back to the door looking into the refrigerator as she

talked on the phone.

"I scheduled an in utero DNA on the baby for tomorrow Tina. I need to know who the father

is even if I decide not to tell anyone. If it's Derek then nothing changes. If it's John's, I guess

I have to decide if I really want anything to change. I love John but I don't think he will ever

leave his wife and I do think Derek and I can be happy together." As Derek stares in shock,

Savannah turns and sees him standing there. "Tina, I have to go. I'll call you later." She

hangs up the phone as Derek continues to stare at the woman he had planned to spend his

life with, the woman he thought was carrying his child. "Derek, hi honey. I, um, didn't hear

you come in."

"I'm not surprised. You were a little busy with that conversation. You want to tell me who

John is or would you rather start with why you lied to me?" He says coldly.

He sees Savannah flinch but doesn't feel anything but cold anger. As she takes a step

towards him with her hand outstretched he steps back. "Don't" he says. " I want answers

Savannah." Derek turns and walks to the living area and sits on a chair with his arms on his

knees. He watches Savannah as she walks to the couch and sits down.

"I didn't lie to you Derek"

He laughs without humor. "A lie of omission is still a lie. You led me to believe this baby was

mine. But you don't know if it is or not do you?"

"No." She says quietly. " I don't know for sure. Not about the baby. But I'm sure about us.

Nothing has changed Derek."

"Nothing has changed? You have to be kidding me. How can you say that with a straight

face Savannah? I just heard you admit that you are in love with a married man who may be

the father of the child you are carrying, which means you were also cheating on me! How

does that not change everything?!"

"We can be happy together Derek. You know we can. And if this baby is yours we should at

least try…."

Derek interrupted, "I will go with you to the clinic tomorrow but I want the test sent to the

FBI lab. If the baby is mine I will take care of my child. But you and I are done. You can stay

here until we get the results or until you find another place to live." He stood and walked out

of the house slamming the door behind him.
