Bugging Out
Once Lincoln's Pokemon are treated, he and his new friends head back to Route 22 to train up his Pokemon before it got too dark out; once there, Lincoln began training his Pokemon.
When he and his friends reach their destination, Lincoln lets all his Pokemon out of their pokeballs.
"Hi, everybody." Lincoln says to his Pokemon, making them all greet him in response. "We have work to do if we're going to be ready for the Santalune gym tomorrow." His Pokemon all nod in response. Lincoln then looks at Riolu with a soft smile.
"I hope we can be friends, Riolu." Lincoln says to his newest Pokemon. "I can tell you love a good fight, and eventually you're gonna be so strong that the other Pokemon around here aren't going to be a challenge to you. If you travel with me, then you might find opponents that will interest you." Riolu thinks for about a minute before he nods, making Lincoln smile.
After Lincoln's talk, he gets started training his Pokemon; his Bagon and Zigzagoon got stronger, his Fennekin learned Flame Charge, his Panpour learned Fury Swipes, his Dunsparce learned Pursuit and Screech, and his Riolu learned Feint. Zigzagoon found an Antidote and a Great Ball with his Pickup ability.
"Wow, Lincoln; you're training hard." said Shauna.
"Yeah; I want to be ready for my gym battle." said Lincoln. He and the rest of the group hear rustling coming from the tall grass; a light brown, birdlike Pokemon with a white underbelly and a yellow beak, holding a leek, jumps out of the grass. Lincoln takes out his poekdex and points it at the Pokemon.
"Farfetch'd, the Wild Duck Pokemon. The plant stalk it holds is its weapon. The stalk is used like a sword to cut all sorts of things." said Lincoln's pokedex. Lincoln turned towards Panpour.
"You up for a battle, Panpour?" asked Lincoln; Panpour nods in response. He and Lincoln turned towards Farfetch'd. "Panpour, use Water Gun!" Panpour releases a stream of water from his mouth, and it hits Farfetch'd. It flies at Panpour and repeatedly jabs him with its leek, knocking Panpour back.
"Panpour, Fury Swipes!" said Lincoln. Panpour leaps at Farfetch'd and repeatedly scratches it, knocking it to the ground. Lincoln takes out an empty pokeball and throws it at Farfetch'd, hitting it, and sucking it in; it wiggled a few times until it clicked.
"Way to go, Lincoln!" said Tierno. Farfetch'd's pokeball vanishes and gets transported to storage. Lincoln uses his pokedex to look up his new Farfetch'd's information.
"This says Farfetch'd is a girl, she knows Peck, Sand Attack, Leer, Fury Cutter, and Fury Attack; she has the Inner Focus ability which prevents him from flinching." said Lincoln. He looks up to see it was getting dark. "I think we should head back to Santalune City."
"Good idea." said Serena.
"Can we grab some dinner first?" asked Trevor.
"Sure; I can eat." said Lincoln.
The group makes their way back to Santalune City and head for a nearby restaurant that had some outdoor tables; after ordering some food, they talk about Lincoln's upcoming gym battle.
"Do you think you can win against the Santalune gym leader?" Tierno asked Lincoln.
"I don't know for certain." said Lincoln. "I'll see what type of Pokemon the gym leader uses and decide which Pokemon I have that would have a decent enough advantage over them."
"That sounds like a good strategy." said Trevor. After everyone finishes their meals, they head to the Pokemon Center, give the nurse their Pokemon for treatment, shower, and go to bed.
The next morning, after everyone's had breakfast; Lincoln and the others exit the Pokemon Center.
"Well, everyone; time to test myself against the gym leader." said Lincoln.
"Do you think you can win?" asked Shauna.
"If I lose, then I'll train some more and try again." said Lincoln.
"That makes sense." said Serena.
"Where's the gym at?" asked Tierno.
"I think it's in a north part of the city." said Trevor.
"Let's go then." said Lincoln. The group walk in the direction that Trevor pointed out and found the Santalune gym easily enough, which was a large building with light green brick walls, and a green roof.
"This must be the place." said Lincoln. He and his friends enter the gym and look around; they see a large battle area at the bottom of a flight of stairs in front of the entrance door, surrounded by large trees, as well as bushes.
"Wow." said Shauna as she at all the indoor greenery.
"There's a lot of trees in here." said Tierno. As the group looks around, a flash of light appears, startling them; when they look around for the source of it, they see a young woman with blonde, chin-length, hair; wearing a white top, greenish-gray cropped pants and wristband, white belt, brown ankle boots, and holding a camera that was pointing at them.
"Hello, everyone." said the woman.
"Who are you?" asked Serena.
"I'm Viola." said the woman now identified as Viola.
"I'm Lincoln Loud." said Lincoln.
"I'm Serena." said Serena.
"I'm Shauna." said Shauna.
"I'm Tierno." Tierno says before he does a few dance moves.
"And I'm Trevor." said Trevor.
"It's nice to meet you all." said Viola. She then takes another picture of Lincoln. "I've never seen a boy with white hair before."
"No one really has." said Lincoln.
"Why are you taking pictures of us?" asked Shauna.
"Photography is a hobby of mine." said Viola.
"Do you come here to take pictures of gym battles?" asked Trevor.
"Actually, in addition to being a photographer, I'm also the Santalune City gym leader." said Viola, surprising everyone.
"Really?!" asked Lincoln.
"Yep." said Viola.
"Then would it be okay for me to have a gym battle with you?" asked Lincoln.
"Of course." said Viola. "We can head into the battle area whenever you're ready; your friends can watch from the sidelines."
"Thanks." said Shauna.
Moments later, Lincoln and Viola were in the battle area while Lincoln's friends were watching from outside of it.
"I hope Lincoln wins." said Shauna.
"Yeah, but like he said before; if he doesn't, he'll try again after some training." said Tierno.
"Are you ready, Lincoln?" Viola asked her newest challenger.
"You bet I am." Lincoln replies with determination on his face. A woman enters the battle area and stands at the center of it.
"This gym battle will be between the Santalune gym leader, Viola; and the challenger, Lincoln Loud. Both trainers will each use two Pokemon. Whichever trainer is able to defeat all of their opponent's Pokemon first will be the winner. Let the battle begin." said the woman who was the acting official. Lincoln and Viola each pull out a pokeball.
"Surskit, go!" said Viola, throwing a pokeball and releasing a blue, round Pokemon with four skinny legs, and a yellow cap with a single antenna on top. Serena pulls out her pokedex and points it at the Pokemon.
"Surskit, the Pond Skater Pokemon. They usually live on ponds, but after an evening shower, they may appear on puddles in towns." said Serena's pokedex.
"Dunsparce, go!" said Lincoln, throwing Dunsparce's pokeball and releasing him.
"Surskit, use Quick Attack!" said Viola. Surkit leaps at Dunsparce with incredible speed and rams him, knocking him back.
"Dunsparce, use Screech!" said Lincoln. Dunsparce lets out a loud shriek, releasing soundwaves onto Surskit, weakening its defense.
"Surskit, Bubble!" said Viola. Surskit releases bubbles from its body and they hit Dunsparce, damaging him.
"Dunsparce, use Rollout!" said Lincoln. Dunsparce curls its body into a ball and rolls towards Surskit; he rams into Surskit, dealing super effective damage to it.
"Surskit, use Quick Attack again!" said Viola. Surskit leaps at Dunsparce with incredible speed and rams him, damaging him. Dunsparce rolls at Surskit again and rams it, dealing more damage than it previously did.
"A good thing about Rollout; it gets stronger after each time it's used." said Trevor.
"Surskit, Bubble!" said Viola. Surskit releases more bubbles, and they hit Dunsparce, damaging him. Dunsparce rolls at Surskit and rams it, dealing enough damage to knock it out.
"Surskit is unable to battle. Dunsparce is the winner." said the official.
"Great job, Dunsparce." said Lincoln.
"Way to go, Lincoln!" said Tierno.
"Keep it up." said Shauna. Viola returns Surskit to its pokeball.
"You did your best, Surskit." said Viola. She puts Surskit's pokeball away and pulls another pokeball from her waist. "You're doing good, Lincoln; but you need to beat my last Pokemon to win a badge from me. Go, Vivillon!" She throws a pokeball and releases a butterfly-like Pokemon. Lincoln takes out his pokedex and points it at the Pokemon.
"Vivillon, the Scale Pokemon and the final evolved form of Scatterbug. Vivillon with many different patterns are found all over the world. These patterns are affected by the climate of their habitat." said Lincoln's pokedex.
"Vivillon, use Tackle!" said Viola. Vivillon flies at Dunsparce and rams him, knocking him to the ground, unconscious.
"Dunsparce is unable to battle. Vivillon wins the match." said the official.
"Don't worry, Lincoln!" said Shauna.
"Yeah; you can still turn this around!" said Tierno. Lincoln returns Dunsparce to its pokeball.
"You were amazing out there, Dunsparce." said Lincoln. He puts Dunsparce's pokeball away and pulls another pokeball from his waist. "Fennekin, go!" He throws Fennekin's pokeball and releases her. "Fennekin, Flame Charge!" Fennekin charges at Vivillon while fire surrounds her body and she rams into Vivillon, dealing super effective damage to her; energy surges through Fennekin's body.
"Flame Charge increases the speed of the Pokemon that uses it." said Trevor.
"Vivillon, use Powder!" said Viola. Vivillon flaps its wings and releases a black powder from them onto Fennekin. "Now if Fennekin uses a fire type move, the powder will explode."
"Then I should avoid using fire type move then." said Lincoln. "Fortunately, Fennekin has more than just fire type attacks; Fennekin, Howl!" Fennekin lets out a howl; energy surges through her body and her attack strength increases.
"Vivillon, use Gust!" Vivillon flaps its wings and releases a gust of wind that hits Fennekin, damging her.
"Use Scratch!" said Lincoln. Fennekin leaps at Vivillon and scratches it, dealing damage.
"Stun Spore!" said Viola. Vivillon flaps her wings and releases orange powder from them onto Fennekin; she begins to twitch.
"Fennkein's paralyzed!" said Trevor.
"Won't stop us; Fennekin, Scratch!" said Lincoln. Fennekin was able to fight through her paralysis and leaps at Vivillon; she scratches it, dealing damage to it.
"Vivillon, Tackle!" said Viola. Vivillon flies at Fennekin and rams her, knocking her back.
"Fennekin, Scratch!" said Lincoln. Unfortunately, paralysis stops Fennekin from attacking.
"Use Gust, Vivillon!" said Viola. Vivillon flaps its wings and releases a gust of wind from them; it hits Fennekin, damaging her.
"Don't give up, Fennekin; use Scratch!" said Lincoln. Fennekin fights through her paralysis and leaps at Vivillon; she scratches it, dealing enough damage to knock it out.
"Vivillon is unable to battle. Fennekin wins." said the official. "The winner of this gym battle is the challenger, Lincoln Loud."
"We did it!" cheered Lincoln, jumping up while raising a fist.
"Congratulations, Lincoln!" said Serena.
"That was amazing!" said Tierno. Shauna looks at Lincoln with admiration in her eyes. Viola returns Vivillon to its pokeball.
"You did your best, Vivillon." said Viola. She puts Vivillon's pokeball away; she walks over to Lincoln who was petting his Fennekin. "That was an amazing match, Lincoln."
"Thanks, Viola." replied Lincoln. Viola reaches into her pocket and pulls out a badge that resembled a beetle.
"For you victory here in the Santalune Gym, I present you with the Bug Badge." said Viola. She gives Lincoln the Bug Badge, along with pokedollars. Lincoln smiles at the Bug Badge in his hand.
"I just won the Bug Badge!" cheered Lincoln; he was suddenly lifted up by Tierno and put on his shoulders before he twirled around.
"Nice battling, Lincoln!" said Tierno as Lincoln was in a dizziness-induced state.
Lincoln has defeated Viola and won his first gym badge. What else awaits him and his friends as his Kalos journey continues?
