9/18 Friday

Soon after school had ended, she did a last check of their equipment, getting a text on her phone.

Ryuji: Yo, Makoto, are you free? I wanted to talk to you.

She quickly replied, saying that she would be happy to meet with him.

They met at school, near the track team.

"Thanks for comin', Makoto." Ryuji nodded.

"You're welcome." Makoto replied. "What did you want to talk about?"

"It was about Yamauchi." Ryuji mentioned. "I know I talked about going after his shadow, but now I'm not so sure…"

"Why not?" Makoto asked.

"Well, before, I was just thinkin' of doing it for the wrong reasons." Ryuji explained. "I was always talking about fame and things like that. So now… I just want to see if we might be able to do this another way."

"What were you thinking?" Makoto asked.

"I asked some of the track team members to come here so that I could tell them about Yamauchi." Ryuji explained. "I think they might be able to do somethin' about him!"

"Ah, I see. And as Student Council President, I might be able to help them." Makoto realized.

"Oh… Oh, yeah, I didn't think of that." Ryuji muttered.

"Wait… why am I here then?" Makoto wondered.

"You're, uh… my muscle." Ryuji muttered. "In case they try to pick a fight or somethin'."

"Would that really stop them?" Makoto asked.

"Well, I think that they're a little scared of you." Ryuji mentioned.

Makoto narrowed her eyes. "Am I that scary?"

Ryuji paled. "N-No, of course not, Makoto! Y-You're not s-s-scary at all!"

She sighed.

"Just… let me handle this, ok?" Ryuji asked. "Just step in if you have to."

"Alright. I'll do that." Makoto nodded.

It wasn't long before the track team members approached them.

"What do you want, Sakamoto?" Takeishi frowned.

"Huh? Takeishi?" Nakaoka gasped.

"Nakaoka?!" Takeishi gasped. "The hell are you doing here?! Are you guys going to gang up on me?!"

"Relax. Ryuji just wanted to talk to you two." Makoto insisted.

"I need to tell you guys about what's actually going on with the track team." Ryuji said.

Ryuji showed them the recording he had of Yamauchi.

"This has to be a joke…" Takeishi muttered. "Yamauchi said that he'd make me the captain!"

"Is this for real…?" Nakaoka trailed off.

"It's Yamauchi's voice, ain't it?" Ryuji answered.

"It is… but maybe he's right." Takeishi murmured. "I don't have talent like you guys. No matter how hard I tried, I could never match up to you guys. How am I supposed to be proud of myself… to prove myself."

"Prove yourself…?" Ryuji repeated.

"My dad's always talking about how proud he is of me." Takeishi elaborated. "He says that I'll get a track scholarship just like he did. That's why I listened to what Yamauchi said. He told me that he'd write me a letter of recommendation."

"So you just trusted everything he told you?" Ryuji asked, narrowing his eyes.

"Shut up!" Takeishi snapped. "What would you possibly know about what I'm going through?!"

"Like hell I don't!" Ryuji snapped. "We ran together for how long?! The entire track team went through all sorts of shit together!"

"Sakamoto…"

"Is betraying Nakaoka and sucking up to Yamauchi really gunna make you proud?" Ryuji asked. "Maybe… you should stop livin' for other people's approval, and start livin' for yourself!"

Takeishi said nothing as Ryuji turned to Nakaoka.

"You knew something was up with Yamauchi too, didn't you?" Ryuji frowned. "But you just let him walk all over you."

"I was just afraid that without him… there wouldn't be a team." Nakaoka admitted.

"But are you really happy like that?" Ryuji asked. "Even with the team around, are you happy?"

Nakaoka frowned.

"Kamoshida, Yamauchi, it doesn't matter. If you let people take advantage of and manipulate you, then they'll do it." Ryuji continued. "You guys gotta do what you think is best for you."

Makoto saw flashes of emotion across both of their faces. Anger, frustration, fear…

"I don't want to insult you guys or anything…" Ryuji sighed. "I get that you're pissed, though, so if you need to go blow off some steam, I get it."

The two boys said nothing, contemplative looks on their faces as they walked off.

"Do you think they'll be able to do something?" Ryuji asked.

"I have no idea." Makoto admitted.

"Eh, I've got faith in them." Ryuji told her. "I've known these guys for years, so I know for sure that they can do this."

"Even after they treated you so harshly before?" Makoto asked.

Ryuji nodded. "Yeah. I think the message is startin' to sink in for them. Thanks for helping me out, Makoto."

"You're welcome." Makoto beamed. "Let me know if you ever need help or want to talk again, ok? We're here for you."

"Yeah… I understand that now." Ryuji grinned.

She felt a little closer to Ryuji.

CHARIOT CONFIDANT: RANK 8

The two of them spoke for a little longer before she went home for the day.

9/20 Saturday

Everyone had gathered near Okumura Foods, determined to steal the treasure.

"Alright, is everyone ready?" Makoto asked.

Everyone nodded.

"Please, let's do this as soon as possible." Haru insisted.

"Of course, but before then, have there been any updates on Sugimura." Makoto asked.

"There's definitely been an effect." Haru answered. "But his family have been keeping him confined to his bed. Not even I can see him. Still, it seems like both my father and Sugimura's family want to rush the wedding as soon as possible."

"How much time do we have?" Ren asked.

"21 days." Haru answered. "So… the 11th of October."

"Three weeks, huh." Morgana noted.

"Don't worry!" Ryuji grinned. "We'll have this palace done in no time!"

"That's good to hear." Haru said, letting out a small smile. "Let's do this!"

After making sure that everyone was ready, they entered the palace once again.

The moment they entered the palace, they immediately noticed that the security had calmed down.

"Guess it was a good idea to wait a few days." Ren acknowledged.

"Yes, now let's try to get back to where we were last time." Makoto ordered.

They quickly made their way back to the area they were in before they had fought Sugimura.

When they arrived, however, they found their path blocked.

"Everyone, look over there." Ann whispered.

Ann pointed at a shadow approaching a keypad next to a large metal door.

"What's the password?" a voice from the other side of the door asked.

The robot entered something into the keypad and waited for a moment.

"Alright, you can enter."

The robot quickly slipped inside.

"There's no way they're going to let us through without a password." Ren frowned.

"Would you have any idea what it could be, Noir?" Yusuke asked.

"I'm sorry, I wouldn't have any idea." Haru frowned. "We'll have to find out what the password is ourselves."

"Let's wait here for a few minutes." Makoto said. "We'll see if anyone comes out of those doors."

Just as she had hoped, a large robot walked out from the other side a few minutes later.

"Think that guy knows the password?" Ryuji asked.

"Let's follow them and make sure." Makoto replied.

They tried stealthily tailing the large robot as he walked through a large room.

Just as they were about to follow him through a door…

"H-Hey, you over there! Who are you?!"

A worker shouted out, having seen Haru out of the corner of his eye.

"Eep!" Haru gasped. "What do I…?"

"Just act natural, Noir!" Makoto hissed. "He hasn't seen the rest of us yet.

Haru gulped as she turned towards the worker.

"Oh! The CEO's daughter!" the worker exclaimed. "What are you doing here?"

"H-Hey there!" Haru nervously greeted. W-What's bonkin'?"

Everyone turned to glare at Ryuji.

"She could've learned that from anyone!" Ryuji insisted.

"U-Um… d-did you see someone walk through that door back there." Haru asked.

"That's my boss." the worker said while talking. "He needed to come grab something before going to see his boss."

"He'll be going back from where he came then?" Haru asked.

The robot nodded. "Yes, very soon.

"Then he must know the password." Haru thought to herself.

As she looked around, she saw several other robots toiling away at their jobs.

"You all look exhausted." Haru muttered. "Shouldn't you take a break?"

"There's no time." the employee insisted. "There's no time at all to take a break! With everything that we have to do, we have to be working every moment!"

"I see…" Haru frowned.

For a moment, she wanted to see if she could help them, before remembering that they were just shadows.

They were, of course, based on actual employees, and the quickest way to help them would be to take down the palace.

"That larger robot is the boss of all the robots out here." Haru stated as she returned. "And they definitely have the password that we're looking for."

"Nice! Let's go nab us a password!" Ryuji grinned.

The group snuck into the door the boss had gone through, finding him ordering around a bunch of employees.

"Get working your useless slackers!" the boss snapped. "Don't let me catch you not doing your job! If you get caught goofing, then I'll get in trouble too!"

Haru winced at the sound of the robot's voice as he directed the exhausted robots.

"Eh, who are you guys?" the robot asked. "I don't recognize you…"

"W-We have to see f- the CEO. It's a very important message!"

"Why would some grunts like you have to see Okumura…?" the robot muttered. "Hold on… aren't you Haru? Shouldn't you already be able to…"

The robot narrowed their eyes. "Hold on… you aren't the actual Haru! You're that imposter that joined up with those Thieves!"

"... We just need the password." Haru told him. "If you just tell us what it is, we'll leave."

"Ha! I don't think so!" the boss robot cried. "I'll capture you all and nab myself a promotion!"

The robot stretched out their arms and shot out gusts of wind at them.

"GET THEM, YOU WORTHLESS SLACKERS!" the boss snapped.

Four employees began to charge them.

"Sorry about this." Haru whispered. "Psio!"

Haru lifted one of the employees with telekinesis, and flung it towards the boss, stopping its attacks.

"Gah! Worthless hunk of junk!" the boss snapped, throwing the broken employee against the wall.

The others made quick work of the other employees, Ryuji short circuiting one and Yusuke slicing another in two.

The boss robot began to panic as three of his employees fell in rapid succession.

"YOU!" the boss robot shouted to the last employee. "It would be a disaster if I were to fall here! For the good of the company, you must sacrifice yourself!"

"B-But I…" the employee stammered.

"Do as you're told!" the boss commanded. "For the good of Okumura Foods!"

"Y-Yes sir!" the employee nervously cried.

The robot began to emit a bright light, steam beginning to burst out of its body.

"What's it doing?!" Ann shouted.

Ren's eyes widened, quickly turning to Morgana. "Blow it away!"

"No you don't!" the boss cried, preparing an attack. "I'll st-"

"Freila!"

Makoto blasted the boss with nuclear energy, knocking it down long enough for Morgana to blow the last employee straight towards him.

"No no no no NO!" the boss cried.

The last employee exploded, the boss giving a cry of agony as he was caught in the blast.

When the dust settled, they saw the boss quickly trying to crawl away, only for Makoto to approach him before slamming her foot on his hand.

"GAHHH!" the robot yelled.

"The password. Now!" Makoto demanded.

"Ok, ok, ok!" the robot relented. "I-It's Utopia! Utopia!"

"Utopia?" Ann questioned. "That seems strange."

"It's real, I'm telling you!" the robot insisted. "Now please, let me go!"

"Why should we?!" Haru cried, tightly clutching her axe. "You're awful! How can you just sacrifice your own subordinates like that?!"

"Because… that's how things are at Okumura Foods." the boss claimed. "If you're going to cut me down, are you going to do the same to your father?"

Haru didn't respond.

"Well, if you did off that bastard, you'd be doing the rest of us a favor." the robot grinned. "All of the other managers, supervisors, and directors are always looking for ways to further their own careers, and sabotage others. One of us would surely take over as CEO if something were to happen to your father."

"That's… pretty effed' up." Ryuji muttered.

"Well, that's the cutthroat corporate world for you." the robot laughed. "But I guess the pampered princess over here would under-GAH!"

Haru slammed her axe into the boss, finishing it off for good.

"We should get going." Haru whispered.

"Noir…" Makoto trailed off.

The group made their way back to the large security door.

"What's the password?" the guard on the other side asked.

Haru quickly entered the passcode into the keypad.

"…One moment, please." the robot muttered.

They heard shuffling behind the door.

"Do they have a code clearance?" one voice asked.

"It's an older code, sir, but it checks out." The shadow explained to the manager. "I was about to clear them."

The guards opened the door… only to be met with a hail of gunfire.

"Alright everyone, let's get moving." Makoto commanded.

"Hold on, look over there!" Morgana exclaimed, pointing at an ominous looking door.

"A will seed door." Makoto noted. "Did Skull tell you about will seeds, Noir?"

"He mentioned them, but we never found one, so I'm not really sure how they work exactly." Haru explained.

"Essentially, once we pick them up, we'll see memories of the palace's owner." Makoto explained. "Usually, they have to do with how they became this distorted in the first place."

"So, they're my father's memories." Haru muttered. "Then… I have to see them. I have to see how he became like this…"

Makoto nodded. "Alright. I'll go and take it then."

Makoto grabbed the will seed from the pedestal, the world around them shifting…

They saw a young boy pouting as an older man held his hand, the two of them walking down the street.

"But Papa, I wanted the toy spaceship!" the boy cried.

"Now Kunikazu, I told you that we don't have the money for it." the older man said. "Maybe another time."

"You said that last time." the boy muttered.

As the two of them walked along the sidewalk, Kunikazu noticed a very skinny man sitting on a bench, his clothes in tatters.

"Papa, what's wrong with that man over there?" Kunikazu asked. "He doesn't look very well."

"Kunikazu, it's rude to point." the old man lightly chastised. "You shouldn't bother others."

"Oh." Kunikazu nodded, looking over at the man again. He was holding out a small cup in his trembling hands, begging for change.

"P-Please…" the old man pleaded. "I have no home. No food. Just some change, please…"

Everyone that passed by didn't say a thing, however. They didn't even spare a glance in his direction. It was as if the old man didn't exist.

"Papa, why is everyone ignoring him?" Kunikazu asked. "Can't they see that he needs help?"

"Hmm… what to do…" The older man muttered to himself.

The older man seemed deep in thought for a few moments before calling out.

"Excuse me, sir!" Kunikazu's father called out.

"Y-Yes." the old man stammered.

"I'm afraid I can't offer money, but I have a restaurant just down the street." Kunikazu's father explained. "I could give you a hot meal, on the house."

"T-Thank you, thank you." the old man expressed. "I am in your debt."

"Think nothing of it." Kunikazu's father smiled.

The three of them walked towards the restaurant, Kunikazu having a bright smile on his face.

"That little kid… he has to be your father, Noir." Makoto noted, as the vision ended.

"Yes, I agree. They even have the same name." Haru nodded. "Which would make the older man with him my grandfather."

"Has your father ever talked about his childhood to you before, Noir?" Ren asked.

"No, not that often." Haru admitted. "Before my father took over the business, we were very poor. Father hates looking back on those times."

"Still, lookin' at him back then… it's like night and day." Ryuji muttered. "Wonder what changed."

"That's what I have to know." Noir stated. "Let's keep chasing after these Will Seeds."

"We will." Makoto nodded. "For now, let's try to keep moving forward."

It didn't take long for them to find a safe room for them to enter. The moment that they entered, Ryuji immediately spoke up.

"So what was that guy with the password talkin' about when he was saying there were 2 Noirs?" Ryuji wondered. "Ain't it kinda strange?"

"Hmm… it's possible that there's a cognitive Noir somewhere around here." Yusuke theorized. "Just like there was a cognitive version of myself in Madarame's palace."

"A cognitive version of myself." Haru whispered. "It must be what my father sees me as…"

"Well, it's only a theory right now." Morgana stated. "But if there is a cognitive version of Noir, we'll definitely find it somewhere around here."

They left the safe room, moving forward in the palace.

"I understand now! I'm no shadow! I am Belphegor! And I shall become your mask!

Futaba stared at the strange toilet demon that Makoto had just negotiated with.

"So is no one going to ask why he's on the toilet?" Futaba asked.

"Maybe he took the Big Bang Challenge." Ren joked.

"I still have no idea how you're able to eat that much food in one sitting." Makoto sighed.

"Well, you see, I'm just-"

"Guys, I'm sensing a lot of shadows up ahead." Futaba called. "Be careful."

"Alright, we'll try stealth, then." Makoto nodded.

The group slowly made their way inside of the large room nearby, careful not to let down their guard for even a moment.

They were, however, not prepared for what they saw on the other side.

"This is awful…" Haru whispered.

What they found was a production line with countless employees slaving away at their tasks. The employee's movements were sluggish and clumsy, as if they were completely exhausted, and there seemed to be no end to their work in sight.

Suddenly, one of the employees collapsed, and the other employees wasted no time picking them up and throwing them onto a conveyor belt.

"What are they doing?!" Haru gasped.

"Let's follow that conveyor belt." Makoto said.

The conveyor belt led them into another room… one even more disturbing than the last.

Numerous employees fell off of the conveyor belt into an incinerator.

"FUEL OUTPUT INCREASING!"

The sound of an automated voice let them know why.

"They're… serving as fuel…" Haru realized.

"But for what?" Yusuke wondered.

Before they could ponder further, an employee burst through the door to the incinerator room.

Instead of fighting, however, the employee slowly walked past them… before jumping into the incinerator of their own volition.

"W-What the hell?!" Ryuji stammered. "They jumped?! Why?!"

"I… I don't know." Ren replied, clearly puzzled.

"I think… that I understand." Haru frowned. "The working conditions at father's restaurant are so horrible… that it would push them to suicide."

Makoto frowned, recalling a time where she had heard a story like that on the news. The more time she spent in this palace, the more that she was beginning to understand the horrible conditions that Okumura had in his factories.

She was, however, beginning to grow concerned for Haru. Haru was desperate to learn everything she could about her father, but every revelation seemed worse than the last…

The group was silent as they continued moving through the production line area.

Eventually, Morgana's eyes widened, sensing something.

"Guys, over there!" he called, pointing to another strange-looking door.

"That must be where the second Will Seed is." Haru stated.

Makoto quickly broke down the door and snatched up the will seed, watching as the world shifted around them yet again.

The will seed brought them to an office, numerous workers diligently typing away at the computers at their cubicles.

One of them, however, seemed to be having trouble staying awake.

"Hey… hey, Okumura-san… HEY!"

Okumura shot up in his seat, a shocked look on his face.

He was older in this vision, probably in his mid-to-late thirties.

"H-Huh?!" Okumura gasped. "What was I…?"

His coworker raised an eyebrow. "Okumura-san, were you dowsing off?"

"N-No, of course not." Kunikazu insisted. "I was just… trying to focus on the screen. Just, uh, making sure I've done this correctly, and all."

"Ah, I see." his coworker nodded. "Sorry, I just thought that you looked a little tired from afar."

"Oh, I see." Okumura muttered. "You don't have to worry. I try to get some rest on the subway."

"Ah, what an efficient use of time!" his coworker smiled. "You really do have quite the incredible dedication to your job, Okumura-san, with all the long hours you've been working. It's something to be admired. Just make sure you don't fall asleep here, haha!"

"Something to be… admired?" Kunikazu repeated, ignoring the lighthearted joke.

"Hm? Well, of course!" his coworker explained. "The bosses think so too! They've actually been wanting to speak with you?"

"R-Really?" Kunikazu stammered.

His coworker nodded. "They sent me to tell you that they want to go out for drinks with you after work in exactly a week… on the 5th, I believe."

"The 5th… of December?" Kunikazu asked. "I… don't know if I can-"

"Okumura-san, you can't just deny an after work meeting with the bosses!" his coworker gasped. "If you do, it could be disastrous for your career!"

"I just can't make the time." Okumura reasoned.

"You'll have to make time." his coworker insisted. "I know that you're working long hours, but you need to put in effort outside of work too if you want a chance of advancing in your career."

"I… I see." Okumura muttered. "Then I'll… try and make time then. If it's that important, I suppose it can't be helped..."

They watched as Okumura's shift ended, and he made his way to the subway, dowsing off for a bit before arriving at his destination.

He walked into a restaurant, scowling as he saw a few men in tattered, dirty clothes eating inside.

As soon as they left, he made his way into the back of the restaurant, an annoyed look on his face.

"Father…" Kunikazu called.

"Ah, Kunikazu, there you are!" his father smiled. "How was work?"

"Fine." Kunikazu muttered. "My boss wanted to speak with me over drinks one of these days. I think that it might be good for my career."

"That's good." his father smiled. "It would be great if you were able to get a promotion."

"Yes, it'd be good if at least one of us would actually be able to make some money." Kunikazu scoffed.

His father sighed. "Kunikazu…"

"I saw the 'customers' outside, Father." Kunikazu stated.

"You know that I won't just let those people go hungry if I can help it." his father replied.

"This is a cafe, not a homeless shelter!" Kunikazu pointed out. "If they don't have money, we shouldn't serve them! Who's going to want to eat here if they look inside and see it filled with nothing but a bunch of dirty homeless people!"

"Kunikazu, please." the man said. "We may be struggling, but that's all the more reason for us to help others who are also struggling."

"And then what?! Do you expect them to pay you back for your kindness?!" Kunikazu snapped.

"No, but-"

*SLAM*

Kunikazu slammed his hands on his father's desk. "Then how the hell do you expect to pay the thousands and thousands of yen in debt that we're in?!"

"I…"

"Papa? Grandpa?"

Kunikazu turned, seeing a frowning little girl with fluffy hair at the door.

"Are you fighting again?" the little girl mumbled.

"Haru… no, no, of course not." Kunikazu insisted. "Your grandpa and I were just… everything's ok."

Haru didn't seem convinced.

"Haru dear, did you need something?" her grandfather asked, changing the subject.

Haru nodded. "I heard that Papa was home, so I had to tell him about what I want for my birthday!"

"Ah, that's right, the 5th of December's coming up! It's only a week from now, isn't it?" her grandfather smiled.

Kunikazu stiffened.

"Papa… you'll be able to make it for my birthday this time, right?" Haru asked.

"I'll… y-yes, of course." Kunikazu told her.

"Yay!" Haru beamed.

"Papa needs to talk to Grandpa, Haru." Kunikazu said. "I'll be with you in just a moment."

"Ok!" Haru smiled, walking away.

Kunikazu turned back towards his father.

"...I think you should step down." Kunikazu insisted. "Let me take over."

"Step down?!" his father gasped. "But-"

"Father, you know that you're driving the restaurant into the ground." Kunikazu bluntly stated. "We can't keep this going. There's only so many hours in the day that I can work. It's not enough though. Not enough to make up for all the money we're burning here."

"Kunikazu… I know it's been hard, but-"

"I can handle it." Kunikazu claimed. "But can Haru?"

His father frowned.

"1 year, father."

"Hmm?"

"1 year." Kunikazu repeated. "If you can't start turning a profit in one year, then step down, and hand things over to me. Is that acceptable?"

"... Alright." his father sighed. "If you feel that strongly about it, I accept."

Noir frowned as the vision ended, thinking about what the Will Seed had just shown them.

"... I did wonder, back then, why father never had the time to attend any of my birthday parties or other celebrations in my life." Haru muttered.

"Noir…" Makoto whispered.

"I… didn't really understand at the time, but… father really did have to work so hard to provide for us." Haru whispered. "So, despite everything, I can't bring myself to hate him."

Makoto nodded, understanding where she was coming from.

"Back then, my father would drink a lot." Haru explained. "He would often come home very drunk after meeting with his old bosses after work. After the first few meetings, he started relying on it more and more to cope with the stress of his old job."

"Guess he couldn't refuse either." Ryuji muttered. "It'd probably hurt his career or somethin'."

"From what I understand, it's not just my father. It's something that's affected many people like my father. In many lines of work." Haru explained.

"Alcohol problems… passing out at work… these things shouldn't be normal." Makoto whispered.

"Sounds like he went through a lot of shit at his old job too." Ryuji frowned. "But that just makes it worse! He knows how overworked people are, but he's overworking his own employees!"

"What a vicious cycle." Yusuke noted.

"There's one more Will Seed, correct?" Haru asked. "And then…"

"We can… try and convince him with words, if you'd like?" Makoto suggested.

"Could that work?" Haru asked.

"It's… not very likely, but we know it IS possible." Morgana answered truthfully.

"I see. I would… like to convince him that way, if possible." Haru said.

"We'll do everything we can to help you." Makoto promised.

After checking on how everyone was doing, Makoto directed them all to a nearby safe room.

After a short rest, they would continue their trek through the palace…
