10/27 Sunday
Yesterday… had been completely exhausting.
Thank goodness today was her day off.
All she wanted to do today was to head to Leblanc, get some studying in, and relax.
She needed a day to destress after everything that happened yesterday.
Unfortunately, that day wouldn't be today.
The moment she arrived at Leblanc, she saw that Ren was also there, drinking some coffee.
"Hey." Ren greeted.
"Oh, hello." She greeted back. "Is Boss around? I wanted to let him know that I wanted to study here for a bit."
"He went to get some groceries." Ren told her. "But he won't mind if you stay here."
"I suppose not." Makoto agreed.
"I'm making some curry right now." Ren mentioned. "Want to help?"
"Oh, sure." Makoto nodded. "Be right there."
Cooking would also probably help to get her mind off of everything that's happened.
"Say, Makoto… about yesterday." Ren trailed off.
"I… I know that our emotions were running wild yesterday. So I thought It'd be ok to just relax for a bit before coming to a decision."
"Yeah. Makes sense." Ren nodded.
The two spent the next few minutes making the curry.
"Ren, can you hand me the next ingredient?" Makoto asked.
"Here you go, honey."
"W-What?!"
Makoto whipped her head around, seeing Ren grinning at her with a jar of honey in his hand.
"Eww, flirting."
Both of them quickly turned around, seeing Futaba giving them an unamused glance from the stairs.
"Geez, the one time that Sojiro doesn't have any customers, but now I still can't down cause of how awkward it is." Futaba joked.
"First of all, there are plenty of times when Sojiro has no customers." Ren joked. "And secondly, didn't I tell you that I'd call you when the curry is ready?"
"Ugh, but I'm hungry right now." Futaba groaned.
"It'll just be a few more minutes." Makoto promised.
Sure enough, just a few minutes later, the curry was finished, the three of them sitting down to enjoy it while Makoto diligently studied.
A while later, they heard the door to Leblanc opening, Sojiro coming into the cafe.
"Hey Sojiro!" Futaba greeted.
Sojiro didn't respond, instead walking up to the counter.
"Boss? Is everything ok?" Ren asked.
Without saying a word, Sojiro placed something on the counter.
The calling card addressed to Futaba.
"W-What?!" Futaba gasped.
"I was cleaning up when I found this." Sojiro frowned.
Futaba's eyes widened in shock, Ren and Makoto struggling to hold back the concern from showing on their faces.
"This is one of those calling cards, right?" Sojiro asked. "They're all over the news."
"H-Hey! You went into my room without my permission?!" Futaba snapped.
"I'll apologize as much as you want later." Sojiro said. "As soon as you explain to me what this is."
"T-That's…" Futaba trailed off.
"Is this something to be getting flustered over?" Sojiro frowned. "This isn't just some silly little game you're playing, is it?"
"I… I…" Futaba trailed off.
Sojiro slammed his hand on the counter. "Explain!"
"E-Explain…?" Futaba whimpered.
Futaba slowly began to sob, so before things could escalate, Makoto decided to step in.
"Futaba, I believe that it's about time you told the truth." Makoto sighed. "You don't know who they are, but you still requested the help of the Phantom Thieves, correct."
"H-Huh?" Futaba stammered.
"How do you know that?" Sojiro asked, narrowing his eyes.
"There was one time when we were working on Futaba's promise list that I stumbled across the card in her room." Makoto lied.
She could tell that Ren and Futaba looked a little uneasy at her lying, but the last thing that she wanted was to get people like Sojiro involved, especially considering that the police were after them now.
"Futaba confessed to me that she requested that the Phantom Thieves change her heart so that she could overcome her trauma." Makoto continued.
"Did it work then?" Ren asked, playing along. "I thought we helped Futaba crawl out of her shell."
"E-Ever since Mom died… there was no way out for me." Futaba sobbed. "I knew that I couldn't keep living like I was, but… I couldn't do anything by myself! I was so desperate!"
"Futaba…" Sojiro trailed off, his expression softening. "Here, why don't we all sit down.
Ren guided Futaba over to a nearby booth, comforting her until her sobbing began to subside.
After a few minutes, Futaba began to explain.
"It was… just like Mom's research." Futaba began. "They changed my cognition."
"Wakaba's research…" Sojiro sighed. "I had wondered about it myself, but… so that's really what happened. I did find it strange how she suddenly decided to take a summer trip…"
"Um… well, the Phantom Thieves helped me overcome my trauma, but it was still really difficult to go outside even if I wanted to." Futaba explained. "But you guys really helped slowly ease me into that."
"Still… this cognitive psiencse theory of Wakaba's… there really was some truth to it." Sojiro realized.
Now that he had heard our (fake) explanation, Sojiro's expression completely shifted to pity.
"Futaba… why didn't you tell me?" Sojiro muttered.
"I'm sorry, Sojiro!" Futaba cried. "It's just… nothing was working! I didn't know what else to do! But… I was worried that you'd get mad at me if I told you the truth."
"I… I'm not angry." Sojiro replied. "I'm just worried. Have you heard about what those Thieves have been doing?!"
"I… I didn't…" Futaba whimpered.
Sojiro sighed. "Just be careful in the future, ok? If something were to happen to you, I'd never be able to face Wakaba."
"O-Ok…" Futaba whispered. "I'll be careful."
"I just hope that they find the culprits behind those murders soon." Ren smoothly said.
"I'm just glad that everything managed to work out for us." Makoto said, giving a breath of relief.
"Yeah… yeah, me too." Sojiro sighed. "Are you sure you're ok, Futaba. Not feeling weird, or anything?"
"Nuh uh." Futaba shook her head.
"Well, alright. Just… let me know if anything changes." Sojiro said.
"Oh… ok." Futaba muttered.
Sojiro went out for a moment to have a smoke, leaving the three of them outside.
"I feel bad lying to him…" Ren sighed.
"I know, but it's for the best." Makoto insisted. "We don't want any more people being involved if we can. Especially people that can't even enter the Metaverse."
"I guess so." Futaba admitted. "Will we ever tell him the truth?"
"I don't know." Makoto sighed. "If we ever did, it certainly wouldn't be now. Not while the Phantom Thieves are under investigation for murder."
"I suppose you're right." Ren admitted. "You want to stay and study some more?"
"Yeah… I need something to help clear my head." Makoto admitted.
She spent the next hour or so studying with Ren while Futaba watched, not quite able to shake the uneasy feeling that she had while doing so…
After finishing their study session, she said goodbye and headed off.
As she walked the streets of Shinjuku, she found herself to be conflicted.
Could she really bring herself to change her own sister's heart?
It was true that her sister had changed from her formally more optimistic self, and it was also true that changing her heart would be an immense benefit to the Phantom Thieves.
But even still…
Couldn't there be another way?
Eventually, she found herself at her destination. A place to cool her head and think.
Entering Crossroads, she saw Mitsuhide sitting at his usual spot, drinking his usual drink.
"Mitsuhide-san." Makoto greeted.
"Oh, N-Niijima-san." Mitsuhide muttered.
His face appeared to be a little flushed. Makoto realized that he had probably been drinking.
"Hey, Niijima-san, you work here sometimes, right?" Mitsuhide asked. "Can't you tell your boss that I can… uh, have another drink?"
"I told you dear, you've had enough." Lala chided.
Mitsuhide scoffed, but ultimately listened to Lala.
"Mitsuhide-san, may I talk to you?" Makoto requested.
"What is it?" Mitsuhide muttered.
"It's just… I heard that the police are finally starting to really investigate the Phantom Thieves."
"... Looks like it." Mitsuhide shrugged.
"Is that all you have to say?" Makoto asked.
"They had a good run." Mitsuhide admitted. "But like I said, it was only a matter of time before they ended up pissing off the wrong people."
"So what, if they take out the Phantom Thieves, does that mean that all the people who are like the criminals that they stopped would be able to go do as they please?" Makoto asked.
"… Maybe." Mitsuhide muttered. "I suppose that if no one else can or will go after those people…"
"And you're ok with that?" Makoto asked.
"It doesn't matter what I, or anyone else thinks." Mitsuhide muttered. "It's just how things are."
"But surely, people can do something, right?" Makoto asked. "I mean, if someone were to try hard enough, then…"
"You're naive." The man scoffed.
"What?" Makoto asked, narrowing her gaze.
"I'm harsh with you, I know, but it's because I don't want you to repeat the same mistakes we all did. Me, your father, your sister, and my partner."
"So it's all pointless, is that what you're saying?!" Makoto snapped. "That there's no justice to be found at all in the police or anywhere? You say that I'm naive… but maybe you're just jaded."
"You really think you can make any kind of difference?" the officer sighed. "When I was your age, I used to think that I could make a difference too. Then I learned what the real world was like. That it's not as simple as wanting to make a difference. Your father… my partner… they were exceptional officers, but…"
"It wasn't a mistake…!"
"Hmm?"
"I said… that it wasn't a mistake!" Makoto exclaimed. "Every day, my father would risk his life in pursuit of truth and justice. And I'm sure that your partner was the same."
"But what's the point of it all if you die before the truth gets revealed?" Mitsuhide asked. "They tried so hard, d yet…but in the end, they died before their efforts could bear fruit. In the end, they were just one person."
"Maybe you're right." Makoto admitted. "Maybe, by myself, I'm not able to achieve much. Maybe all of the corruption in government and the force will hold me back. But let me ask you something…"
"What?"
"What if everyone had that mentality?" Makoto asked. "What if all the good people who wanted to change society for the better were discouraged by corruption. We'd have no good people becoming policemen, judges, lawyers, mayors, politicians… and we'd be left with only the people with the worst intentions. If everyone thought that the system was too corrupt to improve… then it will be."
"...So, a self-fulfilling prophecy?"
She nodded. "We need good people in all of those positions for the system to work."
Mitsuhide sighed. "Even so…"
"Evil and corruption will always exist… that's why good people need to never stop fighting." she told him. "Kaneshiro, and so many other criminals would have never been caught if people gave up so quickly. My father may not have been able to take Kaneshiro down himself… but I'm sure that he doesn't regret doing what he did, especially now that Kaneshiro was taken down."
"Hmm…"
Mitsuhide reached into his pocket, pulling out a small key from his pocket.
"This was the last thing she left me." Mitsuhide muttered "It looks like a key, but it's actually a recording device. From what I understand, it has some… very sensitive stuff on it. The kind of info that would get you in big trouble if certain people knew you had it."
"But you're still holding onto it." Makoto pointed out.
"I guess I am, yeah." Mitsuhide frowned. "I know that she always stood for justice, but… I don't know if I have the strength to do the same. I don't want to spit on her memory, but… what could I even do?"
She didn't want to force him if this information really was as dangerous as he said, but…
"Besides, even if I did want to leak this information, if I'm right in my suspicions that the true cause of her death was covered up…" Mitsuhide trailed.
Understandably, he didn't want to finish, but she understood what he was implying.
If the police were involved with her death, or the coverup of her death, in any way, then they were the last people Mitsuhide should be going to with the information he had.
It was a very delicate situation to be in.
"Even if I really wanted to turn this in, it would be difficult." Mitsuhide sighed. "The other officers have been keeping a close eye on me."
"And that… includes your current partner, right?" Makoto asked.
"Yeah. Kuze too." Mitsuhide frowned. "There's not much I can really do now. It's too dangerous."
"Fighting for justice is always dangerous, isn't it?" Makoto replied.
"Yeah, I suppose that it is." Mitsuhide frowned.
"I can't force you to do anything." Makoto admitted. "But I think that there's a reason why you haven't thrown away that key yet."
"... Maybe so." Mitsuhide said. "Still… the truth can be a little scary, even for us adults. It's one thing to have suspicions, but… if so many of the people on the force who I've worked with for years ended up being involved in…"
"... A conspiracy, yeah. That would be… hard." Makoto finished.
She began to understand Mitsuhide a little better.
DEVIL CONFIDANT: RANK 6
As she got up from her chair, she saw someone in a large coat making their way out of the bar at a pace that was just a little too fast.
"Strange… he just asked for a cup of water and sat there for a while." Lala murmured to herself. "Wonder if something came up…"
Makoto found it odd, but didn't feel the need to dwell on it, so after speaking to Mitsuhide for a little longer, she decided to head home.
But before she could leave…
"Niijima-san?"
"Yes?"
"... Look after your sister for me, would you?"
"... I will, Mitsuhide-san."
10/28 Monday
It was still really early to decide if they really wanted to help Akechi or not. But if they decided that helping him was the best course of action…
Then she would have to make sure that everyone's equipment was in top condition.
She made her way to Untouchable, seeing Iwai behind the counter.
"Hey, good timing. I need you to do me a favor." Iwai said.
He certainly didn't waste any time asking something of her…
"I'll give you a nice discount if you do this for me." Iwai offered.
"What do you need?" Makoto asked.
"Nothin' serious. I just you to just look after Kaoru for a bit." Iwai requested.
"Isn't he a little old to have a babysitter?" Makoto asked.
"I'm worried about Tsuda." Iwai frowned. "I don't think it'll be necessary, but just in case."
"Ah, I understand." Makoto nodded. "But what about you?"
"I'll be there soon. I just have to talk to Tsuda for a bit." Iwai told her.
"Be careful." Makoto urged.
"It's fine." Iwai promised. "He won't pull anything as long as I just listen to him."
She was a little skeptical, but she doubted she could change his mind.
"I just need you to go with him to that diner we went to before." Iwai requested.
"Sure, I'll help out." Makoto agreed.
After discussing things for a bit, she went off towards the restaurant.
"Dad's really late, huh?" Kaoru frowned, glancing around the restaurant. "He's the one who asked us here too."
"He said that he had some business to take care of first." Makoto explained.
"I see…" Kaoru muttered. "Still, it's rare that my dad invites someone out like this. He must really see something in you, Niijima-san. I doubt he'd ever admit it, though…"
"I suppose not." she smiled.
She noticed that Kaoru had seemed to have something on his mind. He was staring at the ground, deep in thought.
"Is something wrong?" Makoto asked.
"I… I was just wondering about something…" Kaoru muttered, hesitant to respond. "About my dad, um…"
She silently encouraged him to continue.
"Has my dad ever said anything to you about me weighing him down?" Kaoru asked.
"No, why would he?" Makoto asked, frowning.
"He's been acting strange recently." Kaoru brought up. "He seems stressed out, and I've heard him mentioning my name on the phone a few times. But when I bring it up, he tells me not to worry. It's just… we're supposed to be family, but it makes me feel anxious."
"I see…" Makoto trailed off.
It could be that some of the people from Iwai's past were threatening his family. It would be understandable why he wouldn't want to worry his son with that.
"I'm not sure if you know this, but… he's not my real father." Kaoru explained. "He said that he took me in after my parents died in a car crash. He said he was good friends with them."
So, Iwai had at least let him know that he was adopted, but it seemed he couldn't bring himself to tell Kaoru the truth about his mother…
"I see. I wasn't aware of the circumstances." Makoto noted.
"I can't help but wonder if dad even considers me part of his family." Kaoru sighed.
"Your father… is a blunt man." Makoto carefully said. "I think that if he had any problems with you, then he would quickly let you know."
"Hmm… maybe…" Kaoru trailed off. "Still, I guess I feel like I'm weighing him down personally." Kaoru admitted.
"... You know, I actually feel the same way sometimes." Makoto confessed.
"W-What?! Really? You do?!" Kaoru asked, shocked.
"Both my parents died when I was young." Makoto explained. "So it's just been me and my older sister, who's also my guardian."
"I see…" Kaoru nodded. "I guess we're pretty similar, then. But what makes you feel like you're a burden?"
"My sister is an incredibly talented and accomplished prosecutor." Makoto explained. "But her job is so demanding of her. So I try to do what I can to help out, but…"
She remembered her sister's harsh words.
"There are times when I do feel like a burden to her." Makoto sighed.
"Oh… well, maybe you're just being a little hard on yourself!" Kaoru offered. "I mean… I've never heard dad say a single bad thing about you! I'm sure he really appreciates you and your help!"
"Is that right?" Makoto smiled. "Thank you. Although… didn't I just say that it was the same for you. Iwai has never said anything bad about you either."
"R-Right. But, uh, speaking of my father, did you ever notice the tattoo?" Kaoru asked, quickly changing the subject.
"The one on his neck?" Makoto asked. "I've seen it, but never got a really good look at it."
"It's supposed to be a gecko." Kaoru explained. "Well, actually, it's based on a bad scar that I have on my neck from the car accident. Everyone used to pick on me because of it…"
Considering the 'car accident' never happened as Kaoru thought, she could only wonder where the scar had actually come from. Perhaps it was best that they didn't know…
"That's why dad got the tattoo. He said something about it being the 'Iwai Family Crest'." Kaoru continued.
"He got it for your sake?" Makoto asked, surprised.
Kaoru nodded.
She had assumed that it was just a tattoo Iwai had gotten from his time with the Yakuza.
The actual reason… was rather nice.
"That reminds me! I did some research on geckos before. It's said that they symbolize protecting one's home and family." Kaoru recalled. "I had almost forgotten about that."
"It sounds like he really does care." Makoto observed.
Kaoru seemed to think for a moment before Iwai suddenly walked up to them.
"Sorry for the hold up." Iwai greeted. "You two look like you're having fun. What've you been talking about?"
"We were talking about what a nice guy you were." Makoto laughed.
"W-W-What?!" Kaoru gasped.
"Hmph." Iwai scoffed. ""Kaoru, what have you been telling her?"
"N-Nothing!" Kaoru insisted.
Iwai shook his head. "Well, looks like you two are getting along well. Anyway, I can't stay long. I have some errands to run. Wanted to at least drop by."
"What errands?" Kaoru asked. "... Or can you not tell me?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Iwai asked. "It's just stuff for work, right?"
Iwai expectantly glanced at her.
"Right, you mentioned having to sort away the latest shipment. You sure you didn't need my help with that?" Makoto said smoothly.
"Maybe later." Iwai told her.
"Well, while you're here, why don't you get us something to eat?" Makoto suggested.
Iwai nodded, thanking her for changing the subject.
"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea." Iwai grinned. "Alright, order whatever you want. It's on me!"
"O-Oh. Ok." Kaoru said.
"Anyway, I'll call you if I need any help with that job." Iwai told her.
She could tell that Iwai was very thankful for her help.
HANGED MAN CONFIDANT: RANK 6
After speaking to Iwai for a little while longer, and grabbing gear for the group, she went home for the day.
"…"
She glanced at her with barely contained annoyance.
"You know, I'm starting to notice a theme with a lot of your confidants." Sae grumbled.
"You think? I just thought that their family relationship was really nice, that's all." Makoto muttered.
For just a moment, a flash of guilt appeared on Sae's face.
"I had never realized that you had changed so much." Sae whispered. "It's still hard for me to imagine that you'd try to change my heart. For the longest time, I knew that you respected and wanted to be just like me. Isn't that still true?"
"I'm still under the effects of the truth serum, so I don't think that you'd like my answer." Makoto bluntly stated.
Sae took a deep breath, trying to control herself.
"Fine then… why don't we jump ahead to where you visited my 'palace'." Sae ordered.
"Of course." Makoto nodded. "It was actually the very next day…"
10/29 Tuesday
"Niijima-san, is it really true?!"
"Niijima-senpai, I didn't know you liked bad boys!"
"Niijima-san, is it true that he carries a knife everywhere?"
"Niijima-senpai, is he abusing you?!"
She could feel her eyes beginning to twitch in annoyance.
She just wanted some peace and quiet.
She had tried to be patient, but after having to explain FOR THE 10TH TIME that no, she was not being abused in any way, she was beginning to lose her patience.
She had hoped that talk of the Phantom Thieves would dwarf that of her relationship, but maybe that was just wishful thinking.
As she finally exited the school for the day, she felt her phone buzzing.
Akechi: Have you made your decision yet?
She frowned. It looked like their deadline was almost up.
Makoto: I don't know about the others, but I've made my decision. Where do you want to meet up?
Akechi: The Kasumigaseki courthouse.
Makoto: You've certainly done your homework.
Akechi: I like being thorough.
Makoto: Give me a minute. I have to confirm things with everyone else.
Akechi: Of course. Please, take your time.
Considering the fact that he was the one that was blackmailing them, his last message only annoyed her, rather than set her at ease.
"S-Senpai, are you alright?"
She turned around, seeing Kasumi glancing at her with a concerned expression on her face.
"You look like you're about to snap your phone in half." Kasumi frowned.
"O-Oh. Sorry, it's just been a long few days." Makoto sighed.
"I see. Could I… talk to you for a moment?" Kasumi asked.
"Oh, of course." Makoto nodded. "Is everything alright, Yoshizawa-san? You seem a little upset."
"Is it that obvious?" Kasumi frowned. "I suppose that I've had a rough few days as well."
"Is there anything that I can help with?" Makoto asked.
"You're… a very caring and empathetic person, Sempai." Kasumi noted. "Maybe that's why he…"
"Hmm?"
"It's nothing." Kasumi said, shaking her head. "Anyway, I was just thinking recently… It feels like my confidence has been on a decline ever since that last competition."
"In what way?" Makoto asked.
"It feels like… It just feels like I'm some sort of fraud." Kasumi whispered. "One of these days, it feels like everyone is going to realize that."
"I don't think that's true." Makoto comforted. "I think that you've achieved spectacular results in the past."
"But that's the thing! That was in the past!" Kasumi argued. "So why can't I achieve the same results now?! Why does everything feel so different now than they did back then?!"
"Y-Yoshizawa-san, please calm down." Makoto stammered.
Kasumi's eyes widened for a second.
"O-Oh, sorry, I just… I'm very frustrated." Kasumi sighed. "In order to excel in gymnastics, my body and mind need to be in sync, but…
"Well… I'm a bit busy right now, but I'd be happy to help you out some time." Makoto suggested. "Maybe I could come support you during practice, or something like that?"
"Wouldn't you prefer to spend more time with Amamiya." Kasumi muttered.
"W-What?" Makoto stammered.
"N-Nevermind." Kasumi replied.
It might have just been her imagination, but she could have sworn she heard a bit of bitterness in Kasumi's voice.
"I appreciate it, Niijima-san. But, until then, I'm worried about how I'll be able to build my confidence."
"Well, I might have an idea." Makoto offered. "Sometimes, when I feel unsure about something, I shout really loud about how confident I am!"
"...So like, that Fist of Justice thing you do?" Kasumi questioned.
Makoto paused, her face taking on a dark expression.
"...Who told you about that?" she hissed.
"S-Sorry! I'm sorry! I just-"
Taking a deep breath, Makoto calmed down and shook her head.
"Nevermind, that's not important. So, what do you say? Want to try to shout out like that. It might help you."
To be honest, she had no idea if it would work or not, as it wasn't actually something she did.
It felt a little bad to trick her like this, but the more she talked to Kasumi, the more concerned she began to feel about her.
So she had to confirm a theory of hers.
"Ok. I suppose that I can try."
"Alright, just repeat after me." Makoto suggested.
"Got it!" Kasumi nodded.
"I am strong! I can win! I can do this!" Makoto shouted.
"I am strong! I can win! I can do this!" Kasumi repeated.
"No matter what, I won't ever give up!" Makoto shouted.
"No matter what, I won't ever give up!" Kasumi shouted, equally as loud.
Makoto paused for a moment, bracing herself for what would come next.
"… I am Sumire Yoshizawa, and I will win!" Makoto said.
Another pause, and then…
"I am Kasumi Yoshizawa, and I will win!" Kasumi exclaimed.
And just like that, her theory had been confirmed.
Although a part of her wished that it hadn't.
"Niijima-san?" Kasumi said, tilting her head.
"Oh, um… so, how do you feel? Better?" Makoto asked.
"A little bit, actually. But maybe it just helps to get everything off my chest." Kasumi admitted.
She could feel the younger girl's gratitude.
