"Shido-san, my job is complete."

Akechi quickly left the scene of the crime, retreating up the elevator in order to report his success to Shido.

"I told you not to address me by name." Shido chastised. "Still, all that's left is the deal with the remnants of the Phantom Thieves, yes?"

"True. However, several teenagers connected to major Phantom Thief targets suddenly dying in quick succession would undoubtedly make people suspicious." Akechi warned. "It would be best if we waited a bit for all of this to blow over, and then have them each suffer from an 'accident'."

"Is there any possibility they'll want to avenge their leader?" Shido asked.

"Doubtful." Akechi stated. "Although even if they did, they're nothing without the guidance and strength of their leader. I'll keep my eye on them just in case though."

"Good. See to that, then." Shido ordered. "And deal with that strange cat you mentioned as well."

"Understood. Although I doubt a cat will be much of a threat on its own." Akechi mentioned. "More importantly, they should be dealing with the suicide soon. Things will become quite busy once the word gets out…"

"I've already prepared for that." Shido replied. "Now then, as for the director of the SIU…?"

"I'll deal with him soon." Akechi grinned.

"Not yet." Shido ordered. "I may still have use for him. Hold off for now."

Sae let out a long sigh, leaning against the wall with the phone in hand.

"What was this all about? What would showing him the phone do?" Sae wondered.

The moment she asked that, the phone began to ring.

Curious, Sae immediately answered the phone.

"I am Alibaba, a member of the Phantom Thieves. I inquire as to your justice, Sae Niijima."

The voice was distorted, likely to hide the identity of the person speaking.

"Please listen to this recording." the voice continued.

She heard a button being pressed, and then…

"There won't be any conflicts of interest, will there?" the man on the recording asked. "The prosecutor is her sister."

Another voice, one that she immediately recognized as Akechi, gave a dark chuckle.

"Don't worry about that. If the Phantom Thieves hadn't said it was possible to steal her heart, I would have thought she didn't have one." Akechi joked. "If we promise her a promotion, she'll gladly take the bait. She'll have no trouble convicting her little sister once she finds out she's a Phantom Thief."

Sae gripped the phone hard in rage.

"Now do you understand, Sae Niijima?

"How do they know I would have this?" Sae questioned. "Did they… plan this far ahead."

"Goro Akechi is evil." the voice continued. "He didn't come here to interrogate the captured Phantom Thief. He came to kill her. Your little sister."

"W-What?!" Sae gasped.

Before she could even begin to process what she had heard, another recording began to play.

"We could say she stole the guard's gun and committed suicide during her imprisonment… How about that?"

The voice in recording… was unmistakably Akechi's, just like the last one.

This must have been what Makoto meant when she told her to listen to the recording!

"Yes, the guard will be one of ours. We'll have to eliminate him as well to destroy the evidence though…"

The recording ended there.

Hearing the young man that had been something of a partner to her for so long talk so casually about murdering two people, including her sister, was a shock, to say the least.

Sae looked around, making sure she was still alone.

Not to mention, that he was also responsible for the deaths of so many others…

"Don't trust the guard, either." Alibaba warned. "He's an accomplice, even if they don't know that they're gonna get betrayed. Just listen to my instructions, alright?"

"Why should I cooperate with you?" Sae asked.

"You wish to save you little sister, right?" Alibaba asked. "Or maybe you'd prefer to leave her for d-"

"Fine." Sae cut her off. "Fine, fine, just… please tell me what to do."

"First, make your way back to her room." Alibaba requested.

As Sae walked back towards the interrogation room, she felt an odd sensation, but it was gone as soon as it appeared.

Soon, she found herself back at Makoto's interrogation room, the man standing guard surprised to see her.

"N-Nijima-san?" the guard stammered.

"What is it?" Sae asked.

"U-Um, nothing…" the guard trailed off. "But anyway, what brings you here? I thought you were done with your business…"

She didn't have time to waste with this man's nonsense.

"... Did anyone else stop by?" Sae asked.

"Uuuuuh…" the guard mumbled.

"Nobody?"

"Th-There'd be no reason for anyone else to come down here!" the guard insisted.

"So it's true, then…" Sae whispered.

"Yes, exactly! O-Of course it's true! Is something the matter?" the guard asked.

If they were going to kill him too, then she needed this man to get away as well.

"It's Akechi-kun. He had to take a sudden call, so he won't be able to make it down today." Sae lied.

"... Huh?!" the guard exclaimed. "He should be- I mean what do you mean?"

"I've been asked to handle things instead." Sae coldly stated.

"T-That's… there's no way!" the guard cried. "You're her sister, so they wouldn't send you to…"

The guard quickly shut his mouth, realizing what he was about to say.

"Yes, you're right. They'd probably want a professional." Sae nodded. "Someone to make sure to eliminate any evidence… including potential witnesses."

The guard's eyes widened, realizing what she was implying.

"I suggest that you go into hiding at once if you value your life. And make sure that no one sees you leaving." Sae advised.

"Y-Yes, ma'am!" the guard immediately answered.

"And don't say a word of what transpired here. Trust nobody. Forget this ever happened. Because if someone catches wind of you being here today, they might…"

"I understand." the guard said, making his escape.

Sae opened the door to the interrogation room.

"... It would seem as though you have been killed."

She awoke from her bed, finding herself back in the Velvet Room.

"Why did you have to die?" Igor asked. "Do you remember?"

"It still feels so hazy…" Makoto admitted. "Something about… faking my death?"

"Indeed…" Igor nodded. "Your 'death' was a necessity for your escape from certain doom. What a tremendous plan."

"Hrmp! It's only natural that she would get through this after the training I put her through!" Caroline grinned. "I wasn't worried at all."

"Is that so?" Justine questioned. "Because I seem to recall you pacing back and forth asking if Big Sis Mako-"

"SHUT UP, JUSTINE!" Caroline snapped. "You were way more worried than me! You were squeezing Jack Frost so hard I thought I would burst!"

"I did nothing of the sort!" Justine refuted.

Igor simply chuckled. "Remember this. The "game" is not over yet."

"I understand." Makoto nodded. "The Black Mask- Akechi- is still out there. But first, I still need to escape."

She could feel herself beginning to awake…

She felt so exhausted.

As if her consciousness was about to fade away…

"... Hey, are you all right?" Sae asked. "Don't fall asleep until we reach our destination."

"Ah…"

"Are you listening?" Sae asked.

Is this the drug wearing off? Or is this a side effect? I'm not sure.

But… I think the memories from before are starting to come back to me…

That's right… Futaba bugged that phone, and… we found out that Akechi is the traitor. And likely the black mask. We were… making a plan on how to stop him. To save me from the interrogation. Finding out their plan, and saving me…

And… we did it.

"…Ever since the death of their leader, the Phantom Thieves have fallen silent. However, the police intend on continuing this investigation until the case is fully solved."

Sojiro listened as the TV continued to drone on and on about the Phantom Thieves. It was all the news had talked about for the entire day. Even his customers all seemed eager to talk about what had unfolded today.

Even after they had explained away the calling card that Futaba had in her room, a small part of him still suspected them of being Phantom Thieves. Today had only confirmed it.

The jingle of his door rang out again, but this time, it wasn't a customer.

"I'm sorry I'm late." Sae apologized. "Where are they?"

"Waiting upstairs. I'll go and tell them to come on down. Need any help fetching her?"

"If you would." Sae answered.

Sojiro called down all of Makoto's friends, who she assumed were Phantom Thieves as well, and came down to greet her.

They were exactly who she expected they would be, but now really wasn't the time to be celebrating that.

"You're… Mako-chan's sister, correct?" Haru asked.

"Yes, that's right. Makoto told me everything." Sae explained. "Save for the identities of her teammates, although I have a pretty good idea who they could be."

There was a stiff tension in the air as Makoto's friends looked at her. For a moment, her gaze softened, seeing the smallest of them hiding behind a boy with messy black hair.

"You are… Futaba Sakura, right?" Sae asked.

She didn't answer.

"I'm sorry. I caused you so much trouble this past summer." Sae apologized.

"O-Oh… um… t-thanks?"

Futaba seemed lost for words at the moment.

"Is Makoto ok?" Ren asked.

Sae raised an eyebrow, seeing the boy refer to her younger sister so casually.

Could he…?

She shook her head. Now was hardly the time.

"She'll be fine." Sae promised. "I'm going to help Sakura-san get her from my car."

"That damned detective…" Ryuji muttered. "If he did anything to her…"

It seemed that all of them were fiercely loyal to and protective of her sister.

She couldn't help but feel happy that her sister had found a group that accepted her.

A few minutes later, she and Sojiro returned with Makoto in tow. She still looked a little worse for wear, but the worst of the side effects of the drug had definitely worn off.

"M-Makoto…" Ren whispered.

"Ren…" Makoto replied.

She took only a few steps forward before Ren ran up to her and pulled her into a big hug.

He held onto her tightly, as if letting go would mean that she'd have to suffer more.

"R-Ren…" Makoto whispered, fighting back tears. "Everyone's watching…"

"It's alright" Ren whispered, "I'm just… really glad that you're ok."

She could feel Sae's inquisitive look staring at her back. There would definitely be a conversation about this.

She wasn't exactly in the mood for a second interrogation, though.

"Hehehe! I knew that you'd make it!" Ryuji grinned. "You're just way too tough to let that Akechi beat you!"

"How are you feeling, Makoto?" Ann asked.

"It hurts a little bit, but I'm alright." Makoto insisted.

"I'm glad to hear it!" Ann beamed.

"It's a relief to see you ok, Mako-chan." Haru beamed.

"I wasn't worried at all." Morgana grinned. "I trained her, so of course she would be.

"Heh, I bet ol' Sketchy Akechi doesn't even know that we tricked him yet!" Ryuji smirked.

"I can't begin to imagine what his expression will be once he finds out." Yusuke chucked.

"Yeah. Him and all of the other members of the conspiracy!" Futaba grinned.

She could feel the support of all of her friends and allies. Together, they had managed to outwit the conspiracy, and grown stronger and closer in the process.

FORTUNE CONFIDANT: RANK 8

"How exactly did you manage to trick him?" Sojiro asked. "The news was going on and on about how you committed suicide."

"Sis, you didn't tell him anything?" Makoto asked.

"There wasn't really time to explain." Sae replied. "And besides, I'm not really sure what happened myself."

"Shouldn't we tell them what really happened?" Yusuke asked.

"I suppose so." Makoto nodded. "This is a bit of a long story, though…"

She went on to explain everything that had happened with the plan. Convincing the enemy that she was dead, having Akechi kill a cognitive fake inside Sae's palace, how Akechi was the true culprit and intended to kill her, how Akechi's phone was wiretapped, how they faked stealing Sae's treasure, showing Akechi the phone, Haru "delicately" dealing with the cognitive Akechi…

Piece by piece… everything fell into place.

"Convincing you was the final part of the plan." Makoto explained.

"I'm surprised that you could have done it in so short a time. Were you that confidant?" Sae asked.

"It wasn't a matter of being confident." Makoto answered. "I know what I had to do, so I did it."

"Simple as that, huh?" Sae asked. "But I still have one last question. You mentioned during the interrogation that the cognitive version of you in my palace was a little girl. So wouldn't Akechi have noticed that when he went to…"

"About that… even if someone's heart hasn't changed as a whole, cognitions are still able to change." Makoto said. "So, if I managed to convince you that I was not some weak little child, then the cognitive Makoto would look exactly like I do now.

"I see…" Sae trailed off.

"That was another reason why I had to be the one getting captured and integrated." Makoto explained.

"And… if I hadn't begun to think of you like that…" Sae trailed off.

"I would have been killed." Makoto bluntly stated.

A few moments of silence passed between the two sisters.

"Hold on, I think I'm starting to get some of this." Sojiro muttered, ending the awkward silence. "But what about the body? What did you do about that?"

"The police never even checked it." Sae frowned. "They had a coroner, but they were likely paid off to give a fake death certificate, but most likely didn't know about the plan in full."

"Since they were planning on eliminating the guard, they likely didn't want anyone else near the scene of the 'suicide', as it would mean another witness they would have to eliminate." Makoto explained.

"Unbelievable." Sojiro sighed. "This 'Conspiracy' group really has that much influence?"

"They have to." Ren nodded. "It would be way too risky for them to try and murder someone at a police facility otherwise."

"I played along with their scheme and made sure no one should check the morgue. That said, I don't think this will last forever. They may catch on eventually." Sae pointed out.

"We won't have much time to discover the true identity of the Conspiracy's leader, in that case."

Yusuke pointed out.

"Well, it's gotta be someone with a lot of influence, right? A CEO of some big company or someone in politics, right?" Sojiro assumed.

"Considering the connection to the police, politics seems more likely." Makoto noted.

"We'll probably need a few days to recover and replenish our supplies." Ren mentioned. "I can't believe what they did to you in that interrogation room!"

"Yeah, if she hadn't been able to talk about the phone…" Futaba trailed off.

"It's alright. I'm fine, really." Makoto said.

"Yeah, come on, guys!" Ryuji grinned. "I didn't doubt the 'Fist of the Phantom Star' one bit!"

"Ryuji…" Makoto warned.

"Aww, come on, it's an awesome nickname!" Ryuji insisted.

"I've just realized what a joke this all is." Sae frowned. "Having me interrogate my own sister right before they kill her. All to avoid backlash."

"What will you do now?" Makoto asked. "You know who we are, but…"

Sae paused for a minute, considering her options.

"At this point, there really is no going back, is there?" Sae questioned.

"No, there isn't." Makoto confirmed.

"From this point forward, I will do my utmost to assist you." Sae promised.

"I suppose I'll do what I can to help too. Just let me know." Sojiro added.

"Um… Sojiro…" Futaba trailed off.

"We'll talk later." Sojiro told her. "But for now, I think it's time for a break. This old brain is pooped. But if you guys ever need a hideout, just let me know and we'll close early."

"Thanks, Boss." Ren expressed. "Appreciate it."

She was glad that Sojiro at least seemed to be on their side, even if they had hidden the truth from him for so long.

But she couldn't help but wonder what Akechi and his superiors were doing right now.

"Makoto Niijima. Can't say it's familiar to me at all…"

Akechi knocked on the door, announcing himself.

"Enter."

Akechi entered the office of Shido Masayoshi, to further discuss their next moves.

If he were to be completely honest, he found himself slightly disappointed with how everything went down.

He was glad that he had won, of course, but he had expected more of a challenge from Makoto, but perhaps he had simply overestimated her in the end.

Or perhaps that her insistence on saving her friends from the police, despite how much weaker than her they all were, was her downfall.

A shame, but nothing to dwell upon.

"So, you'll keep the SIU director alive?" Akechi asked.

"For now." Shido answered. "Once things with the Phantom Thieves have calmed down with the Phantom Thieves and the election, we'll deal with him. But if he proves to be too troublesome in the meantime…"

"I understand." Akechi nodded. "But, onto more pleasant matters, while it might not be official yet, I must congratulate on becoming the next prime minister."

"Yes, I suppose that It's all but decided, isn't it?" Shido said, giving a wide grin.

"And onto our next story, the snap election for the House of Representatives." the newscaster droned. "Discussion is swirling around potential nominees as the deadline for candidacy announcement nears."

"All this and an election too." Sojiro muttered. "So much going on…"

"Candidates will announce on the 23rd of this month, while voting will be held on the 18th of next." the newscaster continued.

"Hey, guys." Futaba called. "I think Akechi might have let something slip."

"You still have his phone bugged, right?" Ren asked.

"Yeah." Futaba nodded. "He mentioned a Shido-san after the murder."

"Shido… Feels like I've heard that name somewhere." Ryuji commented.

"Whoever he is, he likely holds an immense amount of power." Yusuke noted.

"Shido… could it be Masayoshi Shido?" Sojiro wondered.

"Who's that?" Ann asked.

"I believe that he's a politician." Makoto recalled. "I think he's actually campaigned a bit here."

"Shido…" Sae trailed off. "It's certainly possible that he could be the mastermind."

"Do you have any kind of evidence?" Haru asked hopefully.

"Nothing concrete." Sae admitted. "However, as Makoto said, he is a politician of some renown. He really started skyrocketing in popularity around 3 years ago… around the start of all the incidents."

"The mental shutdowns and psychotic breakdowns?" Ren asked.

"... Yes, those." Sae answered, pausing for a moment to glance at Ren. "A lot of them just so happened to cause a lot of controversy within the current administration, which he was frequently critical of."

"Like the train incident in April!" Makoto realized. "I remember that the Minister of Transportation caught a lot of flak for that."

"Much of which came from Shido himself." Sae mentioned. "Not to mention, he's maintained a negative stance on the Phantom Thieves, and now that you've been 'killed', his popularity has grown even more. Most people are predicting that he'll easily win the next election and become the next prime minister.

"So he's been benefiting from all of these incidents." Makoto frowned.

"If he really is behind this, we'll make him have a change of heart, no matter what it takes." Haru declared.

"Yeah! Definitely!" Futaba agreed.

"Shido, huh?" Sojiro sighed. "He's exactly the kinda guy who would try and pull something like this."

"You know this guy, Boss?!" Ryuji gasped.

"It's based on the connections I had from my previous job." Sojiro mentioned. "I had a hunch that he was the one who had crushed Wakaba's research and confiscated her materials. But there wasn't anything I could do, so I chose to protect Futaba and go into hiding."

"Wakaba was researching cognitive psience… So if Shido got his hands on that research…" Makoto trailed off.

"I never would have imagined that all of this is connected, but it all fits." Sae realized.

"Even back then, Shido was going on and on about how he was going to be the prime minister one day. Nobody believed him back then, but…"

"What's going to happen to this country if Shido becomes the prime minister? What about the world?" Ann asked.

"He would become an unstoppable tyrant." Yusuke stated. "One able to eliminate anyone he deems a threat, all without leaving a shred of evidence."

"We gotta expose that rotten bastard!" Ryuji shouted, immediately taking out his phone.

He entered Shido's name into the Metanav, getting an immediate hit!

"Got him!" Ryuji grinned.

"But what could his keywords be?" Haru asked. "We don't really know much about him."

"Well, we know he's a politician." Ren brought up. "So places where politicians gather would be a good place to start."

"In that case… what about the Diet Building?" Makoto suggested.

The moment she said that, they all heard a sound from Ryuji's phone.

"We got a hit!" Ryuji gasped.

"How arrogant must he be to see himself as ruler of the Diet Building?" Yusuke scoffed.

"If we don't do anything about him, he will be." Makoto warned.

"Akechi might be there as well…" Ren trailed off.

"No problem! We'll get a little payback, in that case!" Ryuji replied.

"So, that's the app that lets you enter the Metaverse." Sae observed.

"I still can't wrap my head around all of this stuff." Sojiro muttered.

"Election day is on December 18th." Makoto said. "So, we'll have to be done by the 17th. But…"

"You'll have to lay low for a while." Sae told her. "I… guess I'll have to come up with some excuse for the school."

"And when the time is right, you'll dramatically appear, letting everyone know that you're alive!" Haru exclaimed.

"That's what a Phantom Thief would do!" Morgana agreed.

"What a frightening bunch…" Sae trailed off, a small smile on her face.

Gradually, the celebration calmed down, and one by one, the others started to leave for home.

"Alright, Makoto, we should get going now." Sae said. "It's getting late."

"Actually… wouldn't it be best if I stayed here?" Makoto asked.

"What do you mean?" Sae asked.

"Wouldn't… our home be the first place that they'd look?" Makoto asked. "If they get suspicious, then…"

"Y-You're right…" Sae admitted. "Like we said, they probably won't bother having someone go and confirm the kill, but just in case…"

"You could stay over at my place." Sojiro offered. "I'm sure Futaba wouldn't mind sharing."
"T-That… sounds good, but… I'm really exhausted right now." Makoto said. "Tomorrow, I might be able to go there, but…"

"Alright. Just be careful then." Sojiro nodded.

There was still a bit of unspoken tension between her and her sister.

Words that had been exchanged between them both in the interrogation room and the palace.

She wasn't ready to discuss that with her yet. Maybe when this was all over…

"Be safe, Makoto…" Sae trailed off.

Sae shot a glance at Ren, which she assumed was some sort of silent warning, before leaving along with Sojiro and Futaba.

By the time everyone left, it was very late at night.

With some difficulty, she made her way up the stairs to the attic.

"Uuuh… you can have the bed." Ren offered. "I'll just take the couch. Unless you want it.

"Ok…"

"Makoto, are you sure you're alright?" Ren asked. "I know you said that you were to the others, but…

"R-Really, I'm fine, I prom-

A wave of pain suddenly shot through her, Ren barely able to catch her before she fell.

"Makoto, how bad is it?" Ren asked, seriously.

"Everything hurts…" Makoto confessed.

"I could call the doctor." Ren asked. "One who'll keep things a secret."

"A house call this late?" Makoto frowned. "And who'll keep a secret?"

"Let's just say… they owe me a few favors." Ren grinned.

It thankfully wasn't long before the doctor stopped by Leblanc.

"I can wait downstairs." Ren said.

Soon, the doctor came into the attic.

"O-Oh. You're the doctor from before." Makoto realized. "That helped with Futaba."

"That's right." Tae nodded, walking over to her. "Mind telling me what happened? The guinea pig downstairs just said that it was an emergency."

"Ah…" Makoto trailed off.

"Phantom Thief Business?" Tae asked.

"W-What?!" Makoto gasped.

"The guinea pig's not very good at keeping a secret." Tae grinned. "But I do owe him a few favors."

She might have to speak to Ren about that… it wouldn't be good if a bunch of people knew about their group.

She waited as the doctor examined her, growing a bit concerned when she saw her frown.

"It's… nothing too serious, right?" she asked.

"… You should be fine after a few days of rest." Tae said. "But I can't believe that they would drug a high schooler like this. What the hell were those policemen thinking?"

"Just a few days of rest?" Makoto repeated.

"Yes, but you really should spend most of the day in bed, at least for tomorrow. I can get you some pain medicine, but you'll probably be in a lot of pain in the morning. Don't do anything too physically demanding tomorrow, alright?"

Now that the adrenaline was wearing off, she was really feeling the pain now.

She didn't want to imagine how bad she would be feeling in the morning.

"When they mentioned what happened to the leader of the Phantom Thieves, I feared the worst." Tae mentioned. "But I'm glad to see that you're all still ok."

"Y-Yeah… Makoto whispered.

"By the way… how's that other 'sickness' you had." Tae asked. "The one you stopped by my office for."

"The other illness… O-Oh." Makoto realized, her cheeks reddening. "It's been… well."

"Glad to hear it." Tae replied, amused. "I'll leave some pain meds here and tell the guinea pig what I told you. He's been pacing back and forth the whole time."

"O-Oh…"

She didn't want to worry him, but it seemed like she had done that anyway…

The moment that Tae had left, Ren quickly made his way back to the attic.

"How is everything?" Ren asked.

"She said I'd be fine, but to rest for the next few days." Makoto told him. "So everything's fine.

"Makoto… it's ok." Ren told her. "It's just me. You don't… have to be strong anymore.

Ren pulled her into a hug, holding her close.

"Makoto… it's ok. It's all over. You're safe now." Ren told her. "You're home."

"I'm… home." Makoto whispered. "I'm… home!"

Like a bursting dam, the tears that she had been holding back for so long finally came out.

She cried and she cried and she cried until she didn't have any more tears to shed.

She clung to Ren, feeling his tears falling down as well.

She wasn't sure long they stayed like that, but it was comforting all the same to be able to feel safe once again.

"I'm… really glad you're safe." Ren whispered. "When you got captured, I realized something…"

"What was it?"

"I realized that… I love you." Ren whispered.

Her eyes started to water, before tears began freely trailing down her face again.

Despite everything, she couldn't help but laugh.

"M-Makoto, I…" Ren panicked.

"I guess… this time… you beat me to it." Makoto smiled. "I love you too, Ren."

She closed her eyes, enjoying the feel of his embrace.

I am thou, thou art I…

Thou hast turned a vow into a blood oath,

Thy bond shall become the wings of rebellion

and break the yoke of thy heart.

Thou has awakened to the ultimate secret of
