12/6 Friday
Days Until Ballot Count: 13
She didn't regret the fact that she had helped Mitsuhide, not at all.
But a trip to Mementos always meant that their supplies took a hit, necessitating a restock before going back to the palace.
Still, they had ventured deeper into Mementos than they ever had before, so that had to be worth something.
"Hey, Makoto!"
"Ah!"
Futaba barged into her room, interrupting her thoughts.
"D-Did something happen?" Makoto asked.
"Nah, I just wanted to hang out. I've got all kinds of stuff that I gotta tell you too!" Futaba stated.
"Oh, alright then." Makoto nodded.
Futaba started talking about all sorts of things, like what she had been up to, or some of the new anime she was watching or video games she was playing.
She didn't exactly understand most of what she was saying, but she still tried to pay attention.
"Oh! And also, Kana-chan and I have actually been sending tons of emails back and forth lately." Futaba told her.
"Really? That's great." Makoto smiled. "It's good to hear that you're still in contact."
"Yeah!" Futaba nodded. "Kana-chan told me that she was hoping to have enough money to be able to go to school again next year."
"Good to hear." Makoto nodded. "So what about you?"
"Me?" Futaba paused for a moment.
She patiently waited for the younger girl to reply, wanting to hear the answer she had come to.
"I wanna go back too." Futaba answered.
"I'm proud of you." Makoto smiled. "You've really made a lot of progress."
"Hehe, I knew that all of this grinding would pay off!" Futaba grinned. "But I couldn't have done it without you. I mean… I really hated elementary school, but that was where I met Kana, so maybe it wasn't all bad."
"I'm sure that you'd be able to make new friends at school." Makoto encouraged.
"Yeah… although, I think that I still have one more item on my promise list." Futaba noted.
"Really? And what's that one?" Makoto asked.
"Being ok without you around." Futaba told her.
"Oh, I suppose that makes sense." Makoto replied.
There would, of course, come a time when Futaba would have to navigate social and public situations without her or anyone else's help.
She felt confident in the younger girl, but still couldn't help but worry a little.
"I still kinda get nervous when I think about that…" Futaba admitted. "Even thinking about it gets my heart beating fast."
"Just try to calm down, ok?" Makoto suggested. "We can ease you into it at first."
"... Can't we just skip that last one?" Futaba requested.
"You'll never be able to go to school if we do." Makoto pointed out.
"Uuuugh." Futaba groaned.
"I believe in you, Futaba." Makoto said. "It may take some time, but I'm sure that if you put your mind to it, you can do it."
"You really think so?" Futaba muttered.
"I know so." Makoto nodded.
"... Say, Makoto." Futaba mumbled. "Why are you always so nice to me?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Makoto asked. "It's because we're friends."
"Friends… yeah!" Futaba grinned, standing up. "That's right! I guess… I was just nervous about us splitting apart."
"Splitting apart? What do you mean?" Makoto wondered.
"I mean… When we're no longer Phantom Thieves…" Futaba trailed off. "I figured we wouldn't be able to keep it up forever, and when it ended, we'd… just kinda drift apart."
"You don't have to worry about that. Not at all." Makoto shook her head. "I promise that we'll still stick together."
"R-Right!" Futaba exclaimed, looking very touched. "We're not just teammates, we're friends! That makes sense now! Of course friends would want to be so kind to each other! It makes perfect sense!"
"Yes, that's right." Makoto smiled. "So even if I'm not around, remember that I'll be rooting for you, ok?"
"Got it! And I'll be sure to give it my all for you too!" Futaba promised. "High ten, Makoto!"
She obliged, high tening the excited Futaba.
"Dadadadah! That's my key item!" Futaba cheered.
HERMIT CONFIDANT: RANK 9
After speaking to Futaba for a little longer, she decided to go to bed for the day.
12/7 Saturday
Days Until Ballot Count: 12
She sat in the attic of Leblanc, sipping at her coffee while finalizing their plan of action.
Suddenly, her phone began to buzz, so she pulled it out.
Haru: Excuse me, Makoto. Are you free for today? It's something important.
Makoto: Is this about Takakura-san?
Haru: Yes. I'm finally going to confront him over Sugimura, as well as the management of the company. I was hoping that you would be there as well…
Makoto: Of course! I'll support you however you can.
Haru: Thank you so much! I'll meet you near our corporate headquarters.
Makoto: Sure, I'll see you there!
She made sure to put on her disguise again before heading out to meet with Haru.
The moment she met up with Haru, they immediately went to a meeting room. It seemed like Haru had already arranged everything. Despite that, however, Haru was still clearly nervous as she laid down her coffee.
"So, you'd like me to try this?" Takakura asked.
"Please, if only a taste." Haru insisted.
Takakura did just that, taking a sip from the offered coffee.
"Hmm… this flavor…" he trailed off. "Interesting…"
He took a moment to further contemplate the taste of the coffee before speaking again.
"... So what is it that you wanted to discuss with me? Does it concern the company?" Takakura inquired.
"Firstly, I would like to apologize for bothering you when you must still be so busy." Haru began.
"No, no, it's not a problem at all." Takakura insisted.
Haru took a deep breath, composing herself.
"The truth is, after my father's passing, I've found it difficult to trust anyone at Okumura Foods."
Haru confessed. "And that… includes you, Takakura-san."
"I see… That's quite cruel…" Takakura frowned.
"M-My apologies…" Haru mumbled, stumbling over her words. "It's just, I mean, well…"
"Deep breaths, Haru." Makoto encouraged. "And believe in yourself."
"T-Thank you, Mako-chan." Haru smiled. "I'll be ok."
She turned back to Takakura, looking a little more relaxed.
"Takakura-san, what did you think of the coffee?" Haru asked. "I grew the bears in my own garden, and even handled the preparation."
"Really…?" Takakura asked, looking quite surprised.
"I don't think I can really say that my coffee is very good at this point…" Haru trailed off. "But I put my heart into it. That's why I asked you here today, Takakura-san."
"Hm…"
Takakura took another sip of the coffee, not saying a word.
"I'm not saying that we always need to put in this level of effort into the Okumura Foods coffee chain." Haru clarified. "And I'm not suggesting that we put a halt to any current plans, either. However, I won't let my company serve low-quality food to our customers."
While Haru's tone was calm, there was a certain firmness to her tone.
Despite her calm and kind nature, she knew that this was an issue that Haru wouldn't back down from.
"You know… this is very similar to the coffee that your grandfather used to make." Takakura brought up.
"It is…?" Haru gasped.
"I used to be a regular at his cafe." Takakura explained. "That's actually how I ended up joining the company to begin with."
"I see…" Haru muttered, frowning at the mention of her grandfather's cafe.
"To be honest, I was strongly opposed to closing the cafe… but I didn't have the power to make that decision at the time." Takakura continued. "That's why, to make up for that, I was hoping to name the new chain after his cafe."
"You must have really loved that cafe." Makoto noted.
"I want to create a business that is loved by customers and employees alike, just as his cafe was." Takakura stated. "A place where people can come to drink in the subtle joys of life."
"Is… that so…?" Haru stammered, not entirely sure if she believed what she was hearing.
"Haru-chan, I know and understand that you distrust us." Takakura stated. "If even one of us had chosen to stand up to your father, then maybe things would have turned out differently."
He glanced back over at Haru's coffee.
"I was truly able to sense the passion that you put into your coffee." Takakura complimented. "It seems like you really do take after your grandfather."
"T-Thank you." Haru expressed. "I'm sorry that I was so rude before…"
"I'm sorry as well, for encouraging you to sell all of your shares." Takakura mentioned. "I thought that it might be for the best if you distanced yourself from Okumura Foods, but clearly I was wrong. If you'd like, would you like to attend our next company meeting, Haru-chan?"
"R-Really? You'd want me there?" Haru asked.
"I know you must find this all very hard to believe. Likely because of those troubling rumors about how I was pleased with your father's death." Takakura frowned. "I understand that not everyone will agree with my vision for the company… But I've spent a great effort struggling against our board of directors to push Okumura Foods back on the right path."
"Do you think that's still possible?" Makoto asked.
"I believe so. What I would need is to communicate my thoughts as clearly as possible." Takakura said. "Just as you did with this coffee, Haru-chan."
"Takakura-san…" Haru whispered.
"Do you think you could assist me in accomplishing this task?" Takakura asked. "I want to rebuild this company from the ground up."
"W-Well, um…" Haru trailed off, looking more than a little overwhelmed.
"I'm sure that you'll do great, Haru." Makoto encouraged.
"... Ok." Haru nodded. "Um… I would be happy to join you, Takakura-san!"
"Excellent." Takakura smiled. "I'm sure that your grandfather would be proud… as would your father."
"Yes… I promise to make them proud." Haru beamed.
"Oh, and please don't sell yourself short." Takakura added. "Your coffee was superb."
"Thank you very much!" Haru expressed, bowing.
"You're very welcome." Takakura replied. "Since we're both already here, there was something else that I wanted to discuss with you. It was about your engagement with Sugimura-san."
"Oh, right…" Haru whispered.
"Haru, I think you should let him know how you feel about that." Makoto advised.
"Right… Takakura-san, about the engagement…" Haru began. "I… I absolutely refuse to marry that man! I have no interest in him, or interest in being his wife."
"What? Is that really true?" Takakura asked.
"Well…"
Haru began to tell Takakura all about the awful way that Sugimura would treat her, and the utter disdain she had for the man.
"I see…" Takakura frowned. "I had heard rumors recently that his family was keeping him away from the public eye. Something about how he was saying all sorts of strange things."
No doubt those strange things were him confessing to his actions.
"I just dismissed them as rumors, though. But it seems like that was another misunderstanding on my part." Takakura admitted. "I was under the impression that you were thrilled with the arrangement with Sugimura-kun. That was why I was so insistent on hurrying the marriage. After everything that had happened, I wanted you to have all the support you needed…"
"I would much prefer to walk my own path for now." Haru told him. "I… Want to be the sole person in charge of actions. Not Sugimura, or anyone else…"
"... I understand. You've grown so quickly, Haru-chan." Takakura stated. "I apologize for not noticing earlier."
"About the contract my father made with Sugimura…" Haru frowned. "He told me that the reparations would be immense if I refused to marry him…"
"Contract? I haven't heard of a contract being finalized." Takakura stated. "I do recall hearing that negotiations were ongoing, so perhaps there might have eventually been one, but as of now…"
"Haru, have you seen the contract at all?" Makoto asked.
"Now that you mention it… no, I haven't!" Haru realized, her eyes widening. "I figured Father just didn't feel the need to show it to me, but…"
"Well, our lawyers haven't said anything to me, nor did Sugimura's family." Takakura stated. "Perhaps your father assumed there would be eventually."
Makoto narrowed her eyes, but said nothing. Perhaps out of respect for Haru's feelings, or for her father, Takakura didn't state the other, more obvious explanation.
That her father had lied to her, trying to scare or guilt her into accepting the arranged marriage.
For just a moment, an expression of pain crossed Haru's face, so she must have realized that possibility as well.
"I know that they've recently started inviting him to meetings, in the hopes that he would eventually take over." Takakura mentioned. "However, I don't think that we need a politician to run our entire company, especially considering the humble roots of our organization."
"Then…?"
"As for the marriage cancellation, I'll handle it." Takakura promised. "It may take some time, but it will be done. I promise."
"Thank you!" Haru expressed, giving a polite bow.
Haru and Takakura discussed a few other matters regarding the company before the man left, after finishing his coffee of course.
"I think today was a huge success." Haru smiled. "I was able to tell Takakura-san how I feel, and he actually understood."
"I was worried about how he would react, but he seemed to agree with you on both the company and Sugimura-san." Makoto smiled back.
"I was very afraid to speak my mind… But now that it's over, I think it was honestly quite simple." Haru replied. "But even so, I was only able to make it this far because of you, Mako-chan. So thank you very much!"
"You did really amazing yourself, Haru." Makoto complimented.
"I suppose we both did, didn't we?" Haru giggled. "I'm glad that there are still a few people that I can trust in the company. Before you were by my side, I was hesitant to believe that I could trust anyone."
"No matter what happens, you can always trust us, Haru." Makoto
"I know. And… I want to return the favor." Haru stated. "If you ever need help, please confide in me. I'll always be there for you, Mako-chan."
She could feel the bond between the two of them growing ever stronger.
EMPRESS CONFIDANT: RANK 9
She spoke to Haru for a little while longer before heading home for the day.
12/8 Sunday
Days Until Ballot Count: 11
Plans had been finalized for their next trip to Shido's Palace. All they needed was to gather up a little bit more supplies, and-
BUZZ*
She heard the sound of her phone vibrating.
Glancing at it, she saw that she had gotten a text from Hifumi.
Hifumi: Hello, are you busy today? I wanted to talk to you about a few things, if you wouldn't mind.
Makoto: Sure. Are you at the church?
Hifumi: Yes, I am.
Makoto: Great, I'll see you there.
Curious as to what Hifumi had to talk about, she made her way over to the church in Kanda.
"Thank you for coming. Please take a seat." Hifumi smiled.
The two of them started a shogi match, conversing as they did so.
"I quit the Ladies Professional Shogi Player's Association." Hifumi commented.
"Really? Why's that?" Makoto asked.
"I felt like it would be best if I had a fresh start as an amateur." Hifumi explained.
"I'm sure that you'll excel." Makoto complimented.
"I intend to." Hifumi grinned.
"People haven't been too harsh to you since you lost that game, have they?" Makoto asked.
"It's nothing I can't handle. Actually, there were a lot of people who covered for me, saying that I was just being used. But in the end, I was the one who was too overconfident to notice anything."
"Don't you think you're being a little hard on yourself?" Makoto asked.
"I just feel like I should have been able to take a proper look at myself to properly assess my skill level." Hifumi explained. "I believed that with my skills, I could overcome being treated like an idol. But then, well… Everything came to light, with the help of the Phantom Thieves."
"Right…" Makoto trailed off.
"Still, even after you learned about the fixed matches, you didn't abandon me." Hifumi smiled. "It feels really encouraging to have someone like you believe in me."
"It's because I know you can achieve great things as long as you put your mind to it." Makoto smiled back.
"Thank you." Hifumi expressed. "I know that this started just as a deal between the two of us, but before I knew it, you've become someone really precious to me."
There was a certain calm to the way Hifumi spoke now. As if, even with the criticism she was now facing, she had found a sort of inner peace.
"This time, I'll earn everyone's praise… with my own skills!" Hifumi declared.
"No matter what happens, I'm on your side." Makoto promised.
"I know. The reason I'm still able to be confident in myself is because I know you're on my side." Hifumi pointed out. "I'm really grateful for that."
She could feel a strong, unbreakable bond with Hifumi.
I am thou, thou art I…
Thou hast turned a vow into a blood oath,
Thy bond shall become the wings of rebellion
and break the yoke of thy heart.
Thou has awakened to the ultimate secret of
the Star, granting thee infinite power…
STAR CONFIDANT: RANK 10 MAX
"Right now, I'm afraid there's only one more lesson I can teach you." Hifumi said. "I hope that it'll be helpful to you… And to the rest of the Phantom Thieves as well."
"H-Huh?" Makoto gasped. "W-What do you mean?"
"I don't think that it's a coincidence that my mother was targeted soon after I told you about her." Hifumi smiled.
Maybe that wasn't exactly that subtle of her, in hindsight…
"I'm honored to help the Phantom Thieves however I can." Hifumi whispered. "If there's anything else that I can do to help, please know that you can rely on me."
"Thank you. That's very reassuring." Makoto smiled.
"I'll do my best to support you in whatever you want to accomplish." Hifumi promised. "It's the least I can do, considering you've done the same for me."
With a vow to support each other no matter what, she ended up playing a few more matches with Hifumi before deciding to head home for the day.
12/9 Monday
Days Until Ballot Count 10
Having a bit of free time to herself, she decided to turn on the T.V and listen to the news.
It was a bit of a long shot, but getting some sort of update on some of the situations her allies were facing, or anything that might help them against Shido, then maybe…
"In recent news, police continue to be on the lookout for the culprit behind the murder of two young men."
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of the newscaster describing a grisly murder scene. The bodies weren't horribly mutilated or anything.
It was exactly the opposite.
It was clean. One single cut on each of them. Coldy efficient.
"Clearly, the work of a professional…" Makoto trailed off.
"Police believe these murders to be connected to a string of murders that involved victims dying of knife wounds as well as having valuables stolen from them." the newscaster continued.
"Stolen valuables…" Makoto trailed off.
If she remembered correctly, one of them had a silver chain, and the other one had a golden watch.
Could it possibly be…
"I should definitely follow up on this…" Makoto muttered.
First of all, she needed to check on something at Untouchable.
"So, did anyone ever sell you a golden watch or a silver chain?" Makoto asked.
"Sounds familiar." Iwai grunted. "Can't remember who would have sold it to me, though."
Makoto sighed. "I understand. Thank you anyway. By the way, how did everything go with Tsuda?"
"Heh, I was just about to tell you." Iwai smirked. "I heard he got excommunicated from the clan. Apparently his boss somehow found out what happened. Serve's him right, huh?"
"Yes, thank goodness for that…" Makoto trailed off. "You don't think his clan…?"
"Killed him? Nah, I'm pretty sure he's still alive." Iwai answered. "You know, even if he pissed me off, I never wanted anythin' like that to happen to him.
"I can't say I wanted that either." Makoto agreed.
"This whole thing's been real crazy to me." Iwai sighed. "Tsuda used to be a role model for upholdin' the code. Guess he did say times're changin'..."
Iwai's phone began to ring, the man quickly answering it.
"Hello? Oh, it's you. If you wanna talk about Tsuda-" Iwai began. "Wait, what?!"
Iwai's eyes widened, a panicked look on his face.
"The hell're you doin'...?!" Iwai snapped. "You motherfucker! Hey, hold on!"
The person on the other end seemed to have hung up, Iwai glancing down at his phone, enraged.
"What's going on?!" Makoto asked, deeply concerned.
"Damnit!" Iwai shouted. "That bastard Masa's abducted Kaoru!"
"Masa?! Masa… Masa… From the diner?" Makoto asked.
"Yeah, him." Iwai nodded. "That piece of shit knew about Tsuda failing this entire time… bet he was just waiting for a chance like this!"
"Where are they?" Makoto asked.
"Seaside Park." Iwai told her. "I'll lock up shop, let's hurry!"
It didn't take long for them to make it over to Seaside Park. Masa had even given them very specific directions to ensure they would meet him in a very isolated part of the park.
"There- ah!"
She was immediately on high alert, glaring at Masa as he gleefully held a knife towards a terrified Kaoru.
"... Let him go." Iwai warned.
"Take it easy, Muna-san." Masa smirked. "All I did was give him a friendly ride home from cram school."
He inched the knife closer to Kaoru's neck.
"Ain't that right, Kaoru-kun?" Masa asked, tone growing darker.
"D-Dad, I'm sorry. He said he had something about you that he needed to tell me…" Kaoru apologized. "Then, he…"
"Kaoru…" Iwai trailed off.
"Ain't he just a great kid?" Masa laughed.
"Why are you even doing this?" Makoto asked.
"Who're you, Mune-san's little errand girl?" Masa scoffed. "Wait… Weren't you at the diner with this kid that one day?"
"I told you to let Kaoru go!" Iwai snapped.
"Fuck off, I heard you the first time." Masa frowned, looking more annoyed than threatened.
"... What're you gonna make me do?" Iwai asked.
"Great question! Y'know those modded guns you were gonna give Tsuda? Well, why don't you give 'em to me instead." Masa grinned. 'There's a lieutenant spot open now that Tsuda's gone. This is my big chance!"
"Sorry Masa, but you've got some real shitty timin'. We just broke 'em all down. There's nothing left." Iwai excused.
"You think I care? Make 'em again!" Masa demanded. "Or maybe I could tell Kaoru all about his situation."
"You…!" Iwai glared.
"My situation? Dad, what's he talking about?" Karou questioned.
"Don't you remember what I told you in the car, Kaoru-kun?" Masa asked. "About your dad? About what he thinks of you?"
"S-So… I really am a burden, aren't I?" Kaoru muttered. "That's true, isn't it? Tell me, Dad. I can handle the truth!"
"That's not true! I'm tryin' to protect you, Kaoru!" Iwai insisted.
"Your father wouldn't have gone to the effort to save you if he just thought you were a burden!" Makoto added.
"Look, this family shit is real touching n' all, but we're s'posed to be negotiatin' here, remember?" Masa asked. "So let's start with that delivery date. The sooner the better."
"You bastard…" Iwai grumbled.
"Hey, none of your grumbling shit. None of this would be happenin' if you didn't go n' take this brat it." Masa pointed out.
"I knew it… Everything really is my fault…" Kaoru mumbled.
"Kaoru, I…" Iwai trailed off.
"You have to tell him!" Makoto hissed. "He's your son!"
"...Kaoru, there's somethin' I've been keepin' from you for a while now… and you're prolly not gonna like it." Iwai began. "Truth is, your real parents didn't die in a car crash. You were abandoned by your mother, and I… I left the Yakuza in order to take you in.
"W-What?" Kaoru gasped. "Y-You were-"
"Ahahaha! Oh man! I can't believe you really freakin' told him, Mune!" Masa laughed. "From what I heard, the kid's mom tried to sell you to us just so she could get some easy drug money."
"Sell me…?" Kaoru gasped.
"Yup! She just dumped you and ran when she saw we weren't buying!" Masa continued. "Crazy, huh?"
Kaoru looked to be having trouble processing everything at once, not that she could blame him.
"Hahaha, I was waitin' so long to see the look on your face!" Masa laughed.
"Stop it!" Kaoru cried. "All of that might be true… but it's in the past now! I'm not a child anymore, and I'd never let a stupid secret like that get to me!"
"Wha-"
"Huh?"
Kaoru's outburst had managed to shock both Masa and Iwai.
"So what if my mom abandoned me?! Or if my dad was part of the yakuza?!" Kaoru continued. "W-We're still a family, right? Cause of our family crest…"
Iwai grabbed at his neck, right where his gecko tattoo was.
"Y-You're still my dad!" Kaoru shouted.
"... Attaboy, Kaoru." Iwai whispered, a proud smile on his face. "Listen, Masa… Let's just put an end to this right now. Let's all walk away and start fresh."
"Are you serious?" Masa snarled. "There's no way I'll-"
"That's enough, Masa."
Masa's eyes widened, turning around only to find himself staring down a gun barrel.
"You really fucked up this time, Masa."
"Tsuda?!" Iwai gasped.
"T-Tsuda, I-I mean.. Sir?!" Masa gasped.
"Don't give me that. I know you're the one who ratted me out. You've never known how to keep your mouth shut." Tsuda coldly said.
"N-No, it wasn't me, I swear!" Masa stammered.
"Uh-huh. You wanna tell me what you're doing waving a knife around at civilians? Huh?!" Tsuda shouted.
"I-I'm sorry…" Masa said, only able to manage a pathetic apology.
"... Your kid's got guts, Mune. Like father, like son, huh?" Tsuda observed.
"Course he does. So, what now?" Iwai asked.
"I was just tracking this idiot and happened to run into you. Don't worry, I'll make sure he repays his debts. Haven't thought much about what comes after, though." Tsuda admitted.
"... Maybe you should consider paying off your own debts to society." Makoto advised.
"Heh… You've got guts too, girl." Tsuda chuckled. "Maybe I will do that…"
His behavior was interesting, but he did seem remorseful for his actions, just like their other targets.
"Either way, this is where we say goodbye, Mune."
Tsuda left with Masa, gun trained on him the entire time.
"Are you ok, Kaoru?" Iwai asked.
"Yeah, I was a little afraid… but it's all better now." Kaoru said.
"Heh. Honestly, I'm surprised that you managed to stay calm through all that." Iwai grinned. "Guess you're maturin' quicker than I thought."
"You were very brave." Makoto complemented.
"Sure is. I never woulda been able to say all the shit he did." Iwai agreed. "Guess I was too worried with makin' sure you didn't end up like me that I didn't realize who you were already becomin'."
"It's alright, dad." Kaoru told him. "Although, all this excitement made me feel a little hungry."
"Alright, alright, why don't we all go to diner." Iwai suggested.
"Let's go!" Kaoru grinned.
As they started walking to the diner, Iwai pulled her aside.
"Thanks for gettin' me to tell Kaoru about everything, kid." Iwai expressed. "Guess I hadn't realized that he's not a little kid anymore."
She could feel Iwai's gratitude shining through…
