12/16 Saturday

Days Until Ballot Count: 5

Tomorrow, they would be sending the calling card. That meant that there was only one day until they would be facing off against Shido one last time.

They had all decided on this day beforehand. It was cutting it close, but as long as they played their cards right, it would all turn out ok.

So, in the little time that she had remaining, she would try to do what she could to visit the others, as well as assembling the strongest team of Persona that she could.

"Mako-chan, everything is going to be fine."

She glanced over at Haru, letting out a breath she had been holding.

"I'm sorry, I just…" Makoto trailed off. "This'll be… this has been our toughest fight yet. I can't help but be cautious."

"You haven't led us astray yet, I feel. And I'm sure the others feel the same way." Haru said.

"Thanks." Makoto expressed. "I'm glad to hear you say that. How have you been, by the way?"

"Good, good." Haru smiled. "Lately I've been finding myself coming here even when we aren't meeting, just for a cup of coffee."

"I've heard that you've been getting into the roasting scene." Sojiro scene. "Brings a tear to my eye."

Sojiro turned to face her. "I'll be closing up early today, but I'll let you guys finish what you gotta do first."

"Thank you, Boss." Makoto smiled.

Boss didn't know the specifics exactly, but he knew that they would all be gathering together soon.

"I was finally able to convey my feelings during the company meeting." Haru smiled. "About the new chain, the future of the company, and even about Father…"

"I see…"

"I felt that even being there angered some of them, but in the end they all listened to my thoughts." Haru continued.

"That's good to hear." Makoto nodded. "I'm glad that you're starting to speak your mind to them."

"I was so nervous the entire time… It was exhausting." Haru admitted. "I've had diplomatic dealings with VIPs before, but I've never once spoken my true feelings."

"So how do you think things will go from here?" Makoto asked.

"Well, after speaking to management, I've been considering leaving things to them." Haru mentioned.

"Really?" Makoto questioned.

"At the moment, I just wouldn't be able to supervise them on my own." Haru explained. "They seemed sincere in their acceptance of the public's criticism, so I'll choose to trust them for now."

She supposed, in the end, that was all they could do.

After they had changed a heart, after they had brought about justice… They would need to rely on people to not repeat the same crimes.

A small part of her couldn't help but feel a little frustrated that there wasn't more she could do, but in the end, she knew that was for the best.

"As for my own goals… I'm interested in opening a small private cafe." Haru told her. "And I want everything to be home-grown, from the coffee to the salad. Most importantly, I want to be able to set my own standards, and to be a place that people love, just like Grandfather's. What do you think?

"It sounds difficult, but I'm sure that if anyone would be able to accomplish that, it would be you, Haru." Makoto encouraged.

"Thank you. It's… It's maybe not the most exciting dream, to be honest, but I'm glad to hear you say that." Haru beamed. "I suppose… I just want to give back in a way to everyone. To help my community like Grandfather did."

She had a conflicted expression on her face, likely deep in thoughts.

"I… don't like to dwell too much on my father's neglect." Haru frowned. "I just… would feel wrong to talk about the issues in my childhood when so many others had it worse than me. I was never left wanting for food, clothes, toys or anything of the sort. Any material things that I wanted, I would be given. It's… conflicting, knowing that our family's prosperity was built off of exploiting so many people."

"That… must be hard." Makoto replied, struggling to find the right words.

"I know now that it's ok for me to speak my mind and air my grievances." Haru stated. "But… Well, I know there are lots of people, mostly outside the company, who think it would be best if Okumura Foods just shut down entirely."

"I can understand that perspective, but I think it would be better if it could be reformed, rather than destroyed." Makoto said. "Just like people, I guess…"

"Right. Everyone, myself included, have been trying to minimize the damage from father's confession and death. Some, I'm sure, have been doing it for more… selfish reasons, but I worry about the regular employees too. If we would have to… let some people go, they might struggle even more trying to find new employment." Haru frowned.

She… Had admittedly not thought on that too hard. She didn't regret targeting Okumura for multiple reasons, but… Well, in the end, it was just another reminder that things didn't necessarily end the moment a heart was changed…

"That's why I desperately want to believe management when they say things will improve." Haru said. "I think… It would be best for everyone.

"We'll, if they start slipping into old habits, you'll just have to give them a stern talking to." Makoto suggested.

"Right." Haru giggled. "Maybe I could give my ax next time for some extra persuasion!"

Both of them laughed, Makoto amused by Haru's joke.

Well, she was pretty sure Haru was joking, in any case.

"Good luck, Haru." Makoto expressed.

"Thank you. If you believe in me, then I'm sure that everything will turn out ok." Haru beamed. "Oh, but truth be told, though, I don't plan on opening it the moment I graduate."

"Do you think your coffee and plants still need improving?" Makoto asked.

"I do. I'm satisfied with my progress so far, but I need to keep up that progress. Continue to improve my knowledge and technique. Right now, it still feels like just a hobby."

"You could always ask Boss to work here for a bit." Makoto suggested.

"I've considered that myself." Haru nodded. "Boss really is a kindhearted man, isn't he? A few times, I've found myself coming here just to relax. I'd like my eventual cafe to have that same warmth. It will be difficult, but I suppose I've already achieved my other childhood dream of becoming a heroine of justice."

"I… Guess I did too." Makoto smiled.

"... I'm so glad I met you, Mako-chan." Haru expressed. "At first, it was just nice to have a friend. Someone who understands me. But now, it's much more. I know that I might face more hardship in the future… But as long as you and the others are there, I'll be ok."

"Of course." Makoto smiled. "If there's ever anything else you need, we'd all be happy to help."

"I know… But I'd also like to return the favor. If you ever find yourself in trouble, I'll be there for you. I feel like I finally have the strength to help you, so please feel free to rely on me." Haru said.

As she said those words, she could feel the bond between them becoming unbreakable.

I am thou, thou art I…

Thou hast turned a vow into a blood oath,

Thy bond shall become the wings of rebellion

and break the yoke of thy heart.

Just like with the others beforehand, Haru's Persona began to transform right in front of her eyes. Milady transformed into a woman riding atop a giant pink skull, wearing a golden, crescent moon shaped headpiece.

"W-Wow! I feel as though… I've been reborn!" Haru exclaimed. "This is my new power!"

As the transformation completed, the name Astarte rang out in both of their minds.

Haru took a breath, taking in her newfound power, and smiled at her.

"When I open my cafe, I'll let you be my first customer." Haru promised.

"I'll look forward to it then." Makoto smiled.

"I can't wait!" Haru giggled.

After speaking to Haru for a little longer, Haru left for the day.

Later in the day, her phone started vibrating, so she quickly checked it, seeing that she had a text.

Ryuji: Hey Makoto, can we talk for a bit? Maybe get some ramen or something?

Makoto: Sure, of course.

Ryuji: Sweet! Meet you at the usual place.

Her plans for the afternoon set, she went out to meet with Ryuji.

"Ahh… This is the perfect way to refill after some training." Ryuji grinned, digging into his ramen.

"Speaking of training… Is there any news on the track team?" Makoto asked.

"Yeah, actually." Ryuji nodded. "The track team's up and runnin' again. Yamauchi got taken down pretty quick."

"Really? That's great news." Makoto smiled.

"Yeah, Takeishi's mom is the PTA prez." Ryuji told her. "And he told her everything. She came stormin' in with a bunch of other parents. Wish I coulda seen Yamauchi's face. There's no way the school can ignore the PTA!"

"Did they manage to rehire the old couch?" Makoto asked.

"They did." Ryuji nodded. "Feels great that that asshole finally got what's comin' to him!"

"Think they'll do well at the meet?" Makoto asked.

"Hell yeah they will!" Ryuji claimed. "They ain't gunna lose, and neither will we!"

The two of them dug into their ramen, enjoying it to their heart's content.

"Phew, that was awesome..." Ryuji sighed. "To tell you the truth, I was scared of facin' those guys straight up. I couldn't stand how much they hated me. It only just made me think of how stupid I was."

"... Well, even if you did go about it in the wrong way, I don't think you were wrong to try and defend them." Makoto said. "I mean, in the end, they ended up going against their coach to protect each other, just like you did."

"Guess so… Hey, Makoto, listen for a sec?"

"Yes?"

"I know it ain't like me to talk like this, but I'm glad that you were there helpin' me." Ryuji expressed. "I kinda got you wrapped up in a lotta shit, but you stayed with me 'til the bitter end. I'm glad… You didn't abandon me."

"Ryuji… I would never abandon you." Makoto whispered.

"I know, I know." Ryuji smiled. "It's funny, huh? How this started with us trainin' to be better Pha- well, ya know what I mean. I guess I was kinda a pain in the ass at times, huh."

"Yes, sometimes."

"Wha- HEY! You're supposed to deny that!" Ryuji shouted as she laughed. "Well… Yeah, I guess so. I mean, after Kamoshida, I was kinda just going along for the fame or the girls or whatever. But after helpin' out Haru, and now dealin' with all of this… I realized that helpin' people just feels good, ya know?"

"It does." Makoto agreed.

"And with how much you've helped me, it'd only be fair if I helped you out as well!" Ryuji decaled. "So if anything comes up, I'll be there for you, no matter what!

She could feel the bond they shared growing unbreakable…

I am thou, thou art I…

Thou hast turned a vow into a blood oath,

and break the yoke of thy heart.

Brilliant lights surrounded Ryuji's Persona as it began to change in front of her eyes.

What was once a skeletal pirate atop a boat was now a spiky-haired monkey riding atop a cloud, wielding a long staff in his hand.

Taking a better look at it, she realized that Ryujin's new Persona must be Seiten Taisei, otherwise known as Qitian Dasheng, Sun Wukong, or Son-

"YOOOOO! I got Goku as a Persona now?!" Ryuji exclaimed.

"That… Is technically correct." Makoto deadpanned.

"All right! Now we're unstoppable!" Ryuji smirked. "You can count on me, Makoto! No one'll be able to stand in our way!"

After speaking to Ryuji for a little bit longer, she went home for the day.

Tomorrow… The final battle would begin.

12/17 Sunday

Days Until Ballot Count: 4

She was the first to arrive at Leblanc. She tried to get as much sleep as she could, but only managed to catch a few hours because of her nerves.

Nothing coffee couldn't fix, she supposed.

"Need a cup?"

Right as she was about to fix something herself, she saw Ren descending from the attic.

"That would be lovely, thank you.." Makoto beamed.

"Feeling nervous?" Ren asked as he prepared her coffee.

"... Just a little." Makoto admitted. "I wasn't able to get in as much sleep as I would have liked."

"Neither did I." Ren said. "I just couldn't stop thinking about fighting Shido."

"Have you… Thought about getting revenge?" Makoto hesitantly asked.

"I'd be lying if I said it never went through my mind." Ren admitted. "But I try not to focus on that too much. I try to focus on all the people we'll be helping, and making sure that Shido can't hurt anyone else."

"I think… That's a good way of looking at it." Makoto nodded. "Are you… Confident that we'll win?"

"Course I am." Ren grinned. "Aren't you?"

"I'm as confident as I can be." Makoto told him. "I was just wondering what everyone else thought."

"They all have complete faith in you." Ren told her. "They all know that you'll lead them to victory."

"I'm glad that they have so much faith in me." Makoto whispered.

"If you're still worried… I have an idea on something that might help give us an edge." Ren suggested. "I had an idea for a combination attack."

"A combination attack?" Makoto repeated. "Alright, let's hear it."

Ren explained the idea he had for their combination attack. It was pretty extreme, but…

"That could work." Makoto nodded. "I think it's worth a shot. Although it's a little flashy…"

"Did you expect anything else from me?" Ren chuckled.

"I suppose not." Makoto smiled.

He brought her coffee with a peck to her forehead.

"It'll cool soon. Drink it while it's hot." Ren grinned.

"Right…"

Maybe the cold December weather could excuse her reddening face.

The others arrived right on time, without a second of delay.

"Alright, is everyone ready?" she asked. "It's time for us to end this!"

"Aw yeah! It's finally come down to this!" Ryuji smirked. "So, how're we sending this thing?"

"Getting the calling card into the hands of Shido seems difficult." Yusuke frowned. "Considering how much he knows about the Metaverse, I doubt he would willingly read a calling card."

"And most of the media seems to be very pro-Shido." Makoto added. "So it's doubtful if they would even say anything about this."

"Definitely can't give it to the police." Ren frowned.

"What are we going to do then?" Haru asked.

"Futaba… You have something planned, don't you?" Makoto asked.

"Mwehehe… I thought you'd never ask!" Futaba grinned. "My Futaba Cannon is ready."

"Huh?" Ryuji questioned.

"Check this out." Futaba smirked, showing everyone her laptop.

"T-That's incredible!" Makoto gasped.

"You shoulda told us you were planin' something!" Ryuji exclaimed.

"To trick your enemies, you first gotta trick your allies." Futaba noted.

"I don't know if that was necessary, but I can't argue with the results." Ren replied.

"This is kickass!" Ann cheered.

"This should work perfectly." Morgana grinned.

"All right! Let's go show everyone just how much of an asshole Shido really is!" Ryuji grinned.

"So, this'll be broadcast in Shibuya station?" Makoto asked.

"And a whole bunch of other places!" Futaba grinned. "But let's maybe take a few minutes to make sure everything looks good, and maybe record a few more lines."

And so, everyone helped Futaba out, Futaba even making a few suggestions on lines to add.

"I've come to make an announcement!" Futaba started. "Shido Masayoshi is a bitch-ass motherfucker! He pi-"

"Be serious!"

"Ok, ok…" Futaba groaned.

They ultimately decided the video was fine as is, however.

Before they knew it, it was time to reveal their most ambitious calling card yet…

Shibuya Square was, as always, swarming with people, all quickly trying to reach their next destination, many of them returning home from a busy workday. Underneath the night sky, numerous giant televisions illuminated the shadows cast from the even larger skyscrapers that they were attached to.

That is, until the screens quickly changed.

"Since the young high schooler suspected to be the leader of the Phantom Thieves died within custody… The police have officially announced that these crimes have come to an end, and assure everyone that the peace will be-"

Right before everyone's eyes, the giant screens shifted to static, and then, to the Phantom Thieves' logo.

And then… the sound of their voices.

"Yo! What is UP everybody!" A certain voice, which sounded very similar to Ryuji, exclaimed. "Guess what?! WE'RE THE PHANTOM THEVIES!"

Immediately, everyone's attention was on the screen.

"We are the ones who you all know as the Phantom Thieves." another voice spoke.

"And all of us are alive and kickin'!" a third voice spoke. "See, everything the people n' power have been telling you guys are total lies! And today, we're gunna tell you the man behind it all!"

"So please, allow us to borrow your time!"

By now, plenty of people, not just in Shibuya Square, or even Tokyo, but in all of Japan, were now viewing their message. And the number of people viewing kept growing.

"The recent scandals of public figures, the accidents caused by psychotic breakdowns and mental shutdowns… They all lead back to one man, in order for him to gain the power he thought he deserved." the voice continued.

The crowd began to murmur against themselves, wondering just who the Phantom Thieves could be referring to. Many of them were even recording the broadcast on their phones.

"That man attempted to shift the blame of all of his crimes, including the murder of Kunikazu Okumura, onto us! He was even able to get both the SIU and the police to do his bidding."

The police were on high alert, officers rushing out of the station to try and disperse the crowds, while others attempted to stop the broadcast.

Many of them had no idea who the broadcast was talking about, but they followed their orders without question.

Do not, under any circumstances, allow that broadcast to be shown to people.

"What the hell?!

"Idiots! Just shut it down!"

"That's an order!"

"Move, move, move!"

"You know that we, the Phantom Thieves, only chase after criminals, and this is our most deplorable target yet! The identity of this cowardly, narcissistic man is-"

Suddenly, the screen turned to static, the entire broadcast shutdown.

"Heh, they responded quicker than I thought they did…"

Futaba smirked to herself, tapping away at her laptop in her room.

"Too bad!"

Tapping at her laptop a few more times, Futaba quickly got the broadcast back up, spreading it throughout more and more of the nation.

"The man behind it all is a current cabinet member, of all things. The Minister of State for Special Missions and candidate for Prime Minister… Masayoshi Shido!"

Gasps could be heard from the crowds watching as a picture of Shido flashed onscreen, removing any remaining doubt.

"Everything that guy says is a lie!" the voice exclaimed. "And to prove that…"

The broadcast screen changed again, this time revealing silhouettes of all the Phantom Thieves.

"Look! As you can see, all of us are alive and kicking!"

More gasps came from the crowd at the appearance of the Phantom Thieves right in front of them.

"Shido himself will soon admit to all of the crimes he committed. Look forward to it, everyone!"

The police had now arrived, attempting to disperse the crowds without much success. Their eyes were all glued to the broadcast.

"We're not gunna sit back and watch some crook wreck this country all cause of his overinflated ego!" the silhouette of Skull declared. "Ain't that right, Leader?"

The silhouette of Queen stepped forward.

"Masayoshi Shido, the sinner of Pride… You are our next target. We will never allow someone as distorted as you to lead this country. That is why we, the Phantom Thieves, will steal Japan itself from you!"

The broadcast finished there, the crowd in Shibuya Square all talking amongst themselves over what they had just seen.

From atop his office, Shido angrily slammed his fists onto his desk.

"Find a way to stop the change of heart!" he commanded. "We have all this research, there must be something there! And where the hell is Akechi?! Where is that useless brat?!

"H-He mentioned something about… A palace, sir? I don't really know what that means, but he said you w-"

"He had better not screw this up again!" Shido scowled. "I'll ruin him if he does!"

His two aides nervously nodded their heads as Shido raged.

"What are you still doing here?! I gave you your orders, now do you damn jobs!" Shido yelled.

"Y-Yes sir!"

"Sorry, sir!"

As the two men left the room, Shido glared out his window, intent on crushing the Phantom Thieves no matter what.

"Where is the phantom thief's body?!"

Sae found herself surrounded by detectives.

"What are you talking about?" Sae questioned.

"This isn't the time for games! The Phantom Thief you interrogated!" the detective yelled. "Did you aid in the escape of a criminal!

"What are you talking about?!" Sae snapped. "I don't know anything about an interrogation or a body or anything?! All I can remember is that the Phantom Thieves sent me a calling card, and the next thing I know, everyone is telling me that my own sister is dead! I just don't understand!"

Panic spread on the detective's face. Sae inwardly smirked, seeing as he bought her acting.

"D-Did they… Do something to me…?" Sae dramatically said, clutching her head. "D-Did… I…?"

She pretended to fall to her knees, still clutching her head with one hand.

"H-Hey, are you alright?!" the detective asked.

"The Phantom Thieves must have taken control of her mind or something!" another detective claimed.

"Niijima, did they really manage to change your heart?!" the main detective asked.

"W-What have I done…?" Sae whispered.

"They're still alive!" the officer concluded. "They must have used their strange powers!"

"How did she fake a suicide?!" the other detective cried.

"We can worry about that later, right now we have to focus on capturing her!" the first detective ordered. "And we'll need to interrogate you, Niijima?"

"Me? Why me…?"

"You may remember something once you look at the documentation of the case." the detective theorized. "But keep in mind that it was under your watch that she somehow escaped."

"I'm sorry, I honestly don't understand what's going on." Sae lied.

"Perhaps your boss might know something." the main detective sighted.

"A-About that sir… We just received word that the SIU director was found collapsed in his office. He's been rushed to the hospital, but things aren't looking good."

"What?!" Sae gasped, her surprise genuine.

"What the hell is going on?! Why now of all times?!" the main detective yelled.

"What could have caused it?" Sae wondered.

"What matters right now is you coming with us, Niijima." the main detective ordered. "... You've been a thorn in our side for a while. I think it's about time you paid for that…"

"Very well." Sae said, walking off with them.

"It's up to you now, Makoto…" Sae thought.

Shido had already put out an announcement condemning the Thieves and denying all accusations told him.

The crowds weren't sure who to believe, and the police found themselves overwhelmed trying to contain the crowds, especially around the Diet building.

"... I get it now. So this is your doing, huh?"

"Hey, Mitsuhide, the hell are you doing! We need some help over here!" an officer barked.

"Yeah, yeah, gimmie a second." Mitsuhide replied, making his way over… very slowly.

"I'll leave it in your hands for now, then. You father would be proud of you…" the officer smiled, gazing at the Diet building.

"Makoto, that was you, wasn't it… Be safe…"

"There's nothing to worry about. She'll be fine."

Naoya looked to the side, seeing Hifumi gazing at the same place as him.

"She's already got her opponent in check with her superior tactics. Now all she has to do is seize her victory." Hifumi stated.

"... Yeah. You're right. She's… Really strong, so I know she'll be able to win." Naoya smiled.

Even hours away from the city of Tokyo, crowds were gathering all over, having witnessed the Phantom Thief's message.

"Makoto… you're still fighting over there, aren't you?" Shiho whispered. "I know that you can do it. Save this country, just like how you saved me…"

"Wow, that was amazing! The Phantom Thieves are so cool!"

She grabbed a hold of Mishima's hands, excitedly looking right at him.

"You think so too, right Yuuki-kun?!" Takayo exclaimed.

"O-Oh, um, r-right…" Mishima nervously stammered.

"O-Oh, m-my bad… G-Got a little excited there." Takayo clumsily apologized.

She glanced around before her eyes landed on another Shujin student.

"Oh, Yasui-chan!" Takayo exclaimed, desperate to change the subject. "Isn't Makoto amazing?! I know that you were worried about her before but-

"I-I was not worried! I k-knew she would be fine the entire time!" Chiaki insisted.

Chiaki glanced upwards towards the Diet Building.

"... You better not lose, Makoto." Chiaki whispered. "I don't care if he's the Prime Minister or not, I'm the only one allowed to beat you."

"Heh, pretty bold of you, kid. You picked one hell of a target.

Iwai leaned against a wall, watching the gathering crowd.

"Quite the troublemaker, isn't she?"

Yohei calmly walked up to Iwai from the alleyway.

"Heh, that's for sure… But that's why I'm on your side." Iwai said.

Yohei nodded, before glancing towards the Diet Building himself.

"Keep fighting… Show this country your justice."

Sojiro walked outside, seeing even Yongen bursting with people talking about the recent broadcast.

"Wakaba… You'll finally have the justice you deserve. Heh… You'd be so proud of Futaba if you could see her now. I am too…"

Sojiro glanced onwards, thinking to himself.

"I'm proud of all of those kids… I just hope they come home safe…"

The calling card now delivered, all there was left to do was to take the fight to Shido.

It wasn't long before the others arrived, and together, they all went towards the Diet Building, and their final battle.

"Ugh, I don't know what to believe anymore…"

"I hope they catch those thieves soon…"

"I knew those thieves were scum the minute they killed that one guy!"

The public's words unnerved her. While some of them seemed skeptical of Shido, there were still many people who believed his words, and stood firmly on his side.

But she couldn't let that bother her right now.

"Everyone… Let's take Shido down!"

When they arrived at the ark, everything was silent.

Completely and utterly silent.

Not a single person to be found either outside or inside the boat.

"What the eff is goin' on around here." Ryuji muttered.

"Maybe they made all the passengers go to their cabins?" Ann suggested.

"Probably." Makoto nodded. "Shido's definitely expecting us."

"Well, we've got all five letters, right?" Futaba asked. "So what are we waiting for?! Let's g-"

CRASH*

"Get back, everyone!" Makoto warned.

A window far above them shattered, something flying out of it.

She narrowed her focus, zeroing in on what was falling, nearly gasping as she did.

The broken and battered body of the SIU director lay in front of them.

"Even… Me?" the man questioned. "But I was… But I was… always loyal. Damn you… Shido…"

The man's body slowly dissolved into a black ooze, sinking into the ship.

Makoto glanced upwards, seeing a lone figure staring down at them.

It was hard to make out who they were, but she already had a good idea about how it was.

"Come down and face us, Akechi!" Makoto dared.

The figure jumped down, and she came face to face with father's murderer.

She had seen him many times before, but this time was different.

This time… She would defeat him.
