A/N - I figured we could all use a wholesome chapter after this week's events. Enjoy.
Fitz heard his bedroom door open and opened his eyes. He didn't see anyone and sat up when he turned Lily was standing beside his bed.
"Christ!" he said, surprised she was awake. It was still dark out. He turned on the nightlight and sat up. "Lily, what are you doing up?" He checked the time on his phone. It was 4:34 am. She was hugging a stuffed Hermes horse with her name stitched into the side. "You have to wake up so we can go to Disneyland," Lily said.
"Please don't tell me you woke your sisters up," Fitz said with a yawn.
As soon as he said the words, his door opened again and the twins entered.
"It's way too early honey," he said to Lily.
The twins walked over. "Lily said we have to go to Disneyland?" Daisy said.
"It's not open," Fitz said. "You have to go back to bed, I'll wake you up when it's time to get ready."
Lily huffed and pouted. "I don't want to go back to bed."
"If you don't go back to bed, you'll be very tired when we get there."
He stood from the bed and Olivia finally woke up. "Fitz, what's going on?" she asked groggily.
"Nothing baby, go back to bed."
"Can I sleep with you?" Lily asked.
"Do you promise to go to sleep?" Fitz asked.
Lily nodded.
"Alright, come on, all three of you, hop in," he said.
Olivia yawned as she turned and saw the nightlights were on then and saw the girls were in their bedroom but was too tired to even process that they were climbing into bed with them. All she did was scooch over to give them space then promptly fall back asleep. Fitz turned off the lights once they were all in bed. The twins fell back asleep almost immediately but Lily was still awake, though lying quietly.
"You're not going back to sleep, are you?" he asked.
"I'm just so excited," she said as she squeezed her stuffed horse excitedly. "Do they really have princess castles?"
"They do," he said as he yawned.
"Try to sleep, okay princess. If you don't you'll be really tired."
"No I won't," she said.
"Lily, you're 6 years old and you can barely get through the day without a nap. I don't know if I'm buying that."
"I won't get tired, I promise."
"Sure," he said with a yawn as he turned to try to go back to sleep. It took over 30 minutes for her to finally drift back asleep and Fitz finally went back to sleep once she was down.
It was after 7am when Fitz woke again. This time, it was Olivia waking him gently. He sat up.
"What happened last night?" she asked.
"It was after 4:30 this morning. Lily woke up and woke Daisy and Izzy as well then did me the favor of waking me as well so we could get ready for Disneyland," he said.
She laughed, "Well when you told them about large pink castles and princesses dancing in the streets, what did you expect?"
He laughed too and stood, "I've learned my lesson."
Olivia climbed out of bed slowly. Fitz met her at the end of the bed and gave her a soft kiss on the lips then wrapped his arms around her and hugged her.
She smiled as she wrapped her arm around his waist. Her belly was between them and she took a minute to take in his scent when she heard him sniffing her hair and looked up at him.
"What?" he asked with a smile, "your hair smells good. It always smells good."
She laughed before she reached up and kissed his lips softly then they headed off to the bathroom to shower quickly and get ready before going to wake the girls. He woke Lily first and it only took a few nudges for her to open her eyes. Once she realized it was bright out and Fitz and Olivia were awake she got up and jumped into Fitz's arms.
"Yayyyy, we're going to Disneyland today," she screamed.
"Yeah we are," he said. The twins heard the commotion and woke up too. Lily climbed out of Fitz's arms and walked on the bed to Olivia. "Hi Mommy," she said brightly.
Olivia kissed her and then leaned back. "Guess what Lily, the baby's moving, do you want to feel it?"
She nodded excitedly and Olivia reached for her hand to bring it to the spot where little Fitz kicked.
"That's so cool," Lily said as she smiled.
"Ooo-me, I want to feel it," Daisy yelled as she ran over quickly to feel it. Olivia moved Lily's hand and allowed Daisy to feel the movement. Isabelle was there seconds later to feel it as well. Once the baby stopped kicking Olivia leaned up, she kissed both Daisy and Isabelle. "Alright, let's brush our teeth and get ready for a really fun day."
They quickly headed to the girl's bathroom and got them ready. After dressing them in little shorts and t-shirts and waterproof slip-on sneakers. They headed downstairs and Olivia warmed some banana pancakes while Fitz sliced some fruit for the girls before they put it all together and served them breakfast. Greg wouldn't be coming in today. While they ate Olivia took her prenatal vitamins before she headed upstairs and changed into a pair of jeans shorts and a pink t-shirt top and slipped on a pair of comfortable sandals before she took a couple of bottles of sunscreen and headed back downstairs after packing a tote with their ipads, some wipes and bandaids, sunglasses and anything else she thought they might need. She lotioned the girls with the sunscreen while Fitz headed upstairs to dress. When he returned they lotioned each other with sunscreen and by 8am, they headed out of the house to the car. As Fitz estimated, it took an hour to drive to Disneyland. A team of Disney employees in the VIP parking lot were waiting for them when they arrived. When Fitz parked, Fitz opened the door for himself and then walked around to Olivia's side to help her out. When he stepped back to the backseat, Lily had already unlocked her car seat, tossed her iPad to the side, and was standing out of the seat. The twins were quickly trying to follow. When Fitz opened the door, Lily hopped out quickly. The twins were behind her. Once they were all outside the car, Fitz reached inside to grab their iPads to keep them out of the car that would eventually get hot.
Lily jumped excitedly as she grabbed Olivia's hand. Fitz took the twins hands as they were greeted by the group of 6 employees. Two were tour guides, three were concierges and the last was one of the park managers. Two concierges were dressed like Princess Elsa and Anna, the male concierge was dressed as Kristoff at Olivia's request.
Lily squealed and the twins screamed.
The team introduced themselves and they all received special badges and wristbands before entering the park with their security in tow.
It was close to 6pm when Fitz told them it was time to leave. They had gotten princess makeovers and all three wore different variations of princess dresses and Mickey Mouse ear tiaras. All three girls cried in protest but they were very tired and he could tell. Olivia had to take a few breaks to rest in a room Fitz had secured for her. He went to her and they stopped at a few shops to buy the girls some candy, toys, and other things to make them feel better about leaving the park before they headed home. Though there were some stares throughout the day from some people who recognized him or were confused by the presence of the Secret Service entourage, there wasn't much fuss.
They fell asleep 5 minutes into the drive home. It took almost two hours to get home due to L. A. traffic and when they did Fitz brought the girls up to the room and let them sleep in their dresses and makeup, all he did was take off their shoes and tiaras. They were sweaty, with glitter and food on them but he didn't think it made sense to wake them for a bath.
Meanwhile, Olivia began to set a bath for them in the bathroom. She stripped naked and sat in the tub as she waited for him. When Fitz arrived he stripped as well and stepped into the water behind her. He leaned back against the back of the tub and Olivia leaned against his torso. He closed his eyes to relax for a moment.
"You must be completely and totally exhausted," Olivia said as she turned slightly to him.
"I am," he said with a chuckle as he opened his eyes. "but fuck they had fun. I just know that as soon as I open my eyes tomorrow Lily will be at my bedside asking when we're going back."
Olivia laughed, "Oh yeah, we'll have to go back for sure...maybe the Orlando resort and we can do it over a few days so it's not as tiring…we can go maybe when little Fitzy is a year old or so."
"-Hold up, 'little Fitzy'?" he asked.
"Yeah, what?"
"People used to call me Fitzy when I was younger. I absolutely loathe it."
"Well, you hate your name so that's not surprising."
"Let's change his name," Fitz said.
Olivia laughed, "No, I'm quite set on naming him Fitz."
"You named all our daughters so you said I could name our son but you're insisting on his name…I just needed to point that out," he said.
"I don't know Fitz, maybe you shouldn't have a spoiled brat for a wife," she countered.
He laughed, "That's a plus in my book."
"Why?"
"We'd never argue and there'd be no opportunity for makeup sex."
"Excellent point," she agreed as she rubbed her belly.
"You don't want to call him Scott, I don't want to call him Fitz, we need a happy medium, his legal name will be Fitz, his middle name is Scott but we'll call him something else as a nickname because it's confusing as fucking hell to have two Fitz's in the house. I'm not calling him Gerry or anything close to my father's nickname so we're running out of options."
"Fitzy is not the same as Fitz…I'm going to start embroidering his name on his little blankies."
"Oh god, fine," he said.
She smiled winningly and Fitz sighed. "Are you ready to talk about what Dr. Nandi said or are we too tired for that?" he asked.
"I've been thinking about it a lot but I'm not sure what to say…it scares me but I'm trying not to freak out about it because it also seems so far away."
"It's not something we need to worry about right now…we may not need to worry about it at all. The brain damage might be a precursor to it but it's definitely not a certainty."
"I know, and the rational part of me understands that but there's another part of me that worries because there's a chance at all. You're really young Fitz, the fact that a neurologist and a psychotherapist are so concerned about dementia and Alzheimer's after looking at your brain is fucking terrifying."
"Okay baby but even they said it's not certain," Fitz said.
"I know," she said softly. "But I wish that I didn't feel a pit in my stomach thinking about it."
He wrapped his arms around her and held her closer. "I think it'll be okay."
"I hope so…you are in rather good health for someone who's been through as much as you have…which just reminded me…I read an article about increased prostate and colon cancer cases in men under 40 so I made an appointment for you at a specialist and now you have to get a colonoscopy and your prostate checked."
"Holy fuck Olivia, you couldn't ease into that."
She laughed as she turned to face him. His arms were still around her. "Yes, when was the last time you had a total check-up at the doctor?"
"I had a dozen physicals a year at the base and they are full body scans. Unless I got a fucking polyp in the last 7 months I've been home with you, I think I'm okay."
She smiled, leaned over, and kissed him. "You're fine for now, but I think you should have it done in about five months when it'll be a year since you've returned. You should have a checkup every year after that. I need you to be as healthy as possible for as long as possible. I want to die a very, very old, decrepit woman, and I want you to be very old and decrepit beside me."
"That's the plan," he said as he kissed her again and again and they made out in the tub for a few minutes before they switched the shower and when they were done they headed to bed.
It was days later Olivia was sitting on the exam table as her ob/gyn Vanessa scribbled on a piece of paper and intermittently checked a computer screen as she worked out some formula to figure out the fetal weight of their little boy. Fitz was beside her. A few moments later Vanessa was finished and looked up.
"He's big," she said. "It looks like he's around 6 to 6.5 pounds. That puts him in the 95th percentile."
"That's impossible, I'm 32 weeks."
"It's happened before," Vanessa said. "I've had a few big babies throughout my time practicing."
"What's the biggest one been?" Fitz asked.
"A linebacker born at 12 pounds. C-section obviously."
Olivia laughed and shook her head.
"When are you flying out to New York?" Vanessa asked.
"In a few weeks," Olivia answered. "How can he be almost 7 pounds already, Lily was born full term at 6 and a half pounds."
"Boys tend to be bigger," she said. "I think what you have to prepare yourself for is an early delivery. He's very big and he'll continue to get bigger."
"How early?" Fitz asked.
"I think in a month," Vanessa said. "I'm estimating he'll be about 9 pounds by then which is about as big you can vaginally deliver. Your pelvis is narrow so we're really pushing it with 9 pounds here. If he gets any bigger then I can't let you push him out, we'll have to do a c-section and I know you don't want that."
"I don't but I don't want to be selfish either to let him be born early because I don't want to have a c-section. I may just have to have a c-section then so he can be born at term."
"Listen," Vanessa said. "I don't mean to go on a rant here but trying to figure out what method of birthing, all of which are hard, you can tolerate the most, is not selfish. He's not underweight, if you delivered him now he'd be a giant compared to the 32-weekers in the NICU and he'd need a few days in the NICU to develop his lungs and learn to feed but then he'd be fine."
Olivia chuckled, "So he's coming earlier."
"Yes," Vanessa said. "I'm going to prescribe you steroids to develop his lungs. I don't want to induce you so on our next appointment we can discuss our new plan for delivery as well."
"What does that mean?" Fitz asked. "Wouldn't you have to induce her if he's early?"
"Well, not necessarily, a woman's body is very intuitive, she may deliver early naturally because he is too big, it's the timing that we'll have to work on. If I have to induce her then I will but I don't want to go that route."
"I want a lot of drugs," Olivia said. "I want an anesthesiologist on call. I want to be so drugged up it'll barely register that I'm in labor, let alone remember it when I'm done."
Vanessa laughed, "I really like you."
Olivia laughed then she turned to Fitz and he remembered. "I'll have my assistant reach out to you to sort out traveling to New York and all the compensation around that...I'll pay you whatever you want, I just need you to help Olivia birth our little boy safely."
Olivia smiled and held her belly. Vanessa smiled as well. "I'll get him out safely, not to worry."
"So how is this gonna work? We'll be in New York, you are at least 8 hours away. What if something happens and we need you right away," Fitz asked.
"Yes, I was just going to bring that up. Once Olivia gets to New York, I'm going to connect her with a former colleague of mine. She's a brilliant Ob. The timing here is important. I'll want you to come in every week from now on and we'll use this time to prep and plan for delivery. Once you get to New York, you will really only have a week or so there before we want to deliver. I don't want you to get past 36 weeks if he continues to grow at this rate. This doctor in New York, I'm going to consult with her virtually and we'll discuss your case so that if anything happens and I'm not yet in the city, you'll have someone who I trust and who understands your pregnancy to look after you until I get there. Barring any emergencies that shouldn't be more than 12 hours for me to get to New York. I'm ensuring my visiting privileges are in order at Mount Sinai West which is the closest hospital to you and they have a great reputation as you know since you delivered Lily there so we'll deliver there."
"Yeah, well I can have a plane chartered for you so you won't have to worry about commercial flying," Fitz said.
Vanessa laughed, "I've never been in a private plane before. Olivia, I might put your picture up on the wall to show my other patients how to treat me."
Olivia chuckled, "Don't get him started Vanessa, next he'll ask you to move into our home with us so you're around for the entire week before I give birth."
"I was going to ask that actually: Fitz said. "not our home, a hotel close by for that one week, just in case."
"Fitz-" Olivia began, feeling that his request was unreasonable and inconsiderate to other patients.
"-Look, I would certainly love to but my schedule is really tricky, I have a couple of other patients who will deliver around that time so in that one week, I'm on call for their births."
Fitz shrugged and turned to Olivia, "It doesn't hurt to ask."
"And I want to reiterate, this is just a plan, if I measure you at 36 weeks and his weight gain has stalled or slowed and we can go another week then another, and another until you are full term then that's the best case scenario."
"Is that likely?" Olivia asked.
"Probably not," she said. "he's going to keep gaining weight."
"Thanks, Vanessa," Olivia said.
"Yes, thank you," Fitz repeated.
"You're welcome," Vanessa said. "and remember, I'm going to send your prescription to the pharmacy and have it delivered by tonight. Text or call me with any questions alright?"
Olivia nodded before she sat up from the exam table. Fitz held her and helped her down. Her stomach was very big.
She laughed, "God, I'm huge."
"Yes, It's amazing," Fitz said.
They returned home and continued planning their move. In the weeks leading up to their August 1st move-in date, Olivia worked with the interior designer on the house while working with a shopper on getting all the things they would need for the baby.
She was glad she'd waited to do all the shopping until later in her pregnancy, all the items were being shipped to New York and there was a team of people filling out her home with furniture, very expensive art, houseware, and customizations; from wallpapers to new light fixtures and everything else they would need to make their new house a home.
While Olivia worked on their home, Fitz worked on schooling for the girls, and Lily took the neuropsychological testing suggested by her school. It was hours long and required several sessions with a child neuropsychological evaluator. He got Olivia's tailor to purchase their uniforms fabric and create their uniform tunics and skirts then alter them for the girls.
Olivia's assistant took over the packing up of the house with a team of movers. It was mostly clothing and their personal items. Furniture, housewares, and other items would stay for whenever they visited. They didn't plan on selling that home, Olivia was attached to it.
Sonia was out on vacation so Pam took over nannying during the last weeks. It was a busy few weeks until finally, two days before they were to catch their flight.
Lucky and his family came over to celebrate with a backyard dinner in the evening. He insisted on grilling and so in preparation Fitz was determined to learn how to grill as well. He took lessons from Greg in the days prior.
In the backyard, as she watched Fitz and Lucky grilling in some sort of competition with each other she couldn't help but laugh. Lily and the twins were playing and chasing Alexander around while Lucky's wife Theresa was seated beside her on the adjacent lounge chair.
She was out of breath just sitting there on the chair and after a while Theresa mentioned it.
"Are you alright?" she asked.
"Yeah, I'm winded just by sitting here," Olivia said with a breathless laugh "but I have a week or so left so I'm just trying to bear it."
"How far along are you?"
"I'm 35 weeks," Olivia said.
"You look ready to pop. Why are you giving birth at 36 weeks?"
"My Ob thinks it's best," she said. "He's too big. I can't wait to get him out. When he kicks me it hurts quite badly now. My girls were much smaller. I thought the twins were a lot to carry but he's so much worse."
"Alex was 8 and a half pounds, I almost died.," Theresa said.
Olivia chuckled, "This one is 9 pounds right now. Fitz calls him sasquatch."
Theresa laughed, "Why do you think he's so big? Is it just because he's a boy? Fitz is a large man so I don't know."
"I was curious so I had Fitz look up his birth records and he was a whopping 11 pounds when he was born. I think that might be part of it, I also think I've been happy and eating healthily throughout my pregnancy which wasn't the case with my previous pregnancies so it's certainly multifaceted...let's say that."
"You're gonna have a c-section right?"
"No, I'm going to try to push him out…my Ob is not thrilled."
"I wish I had a c-section with Alex, I was hurting real bad after."
"I had the opposite experience, pushing Lily out was hard as it happened but after I felt great, I felt like I accomplished something and then healing down there was not so bad. I wasn't prepared for the c-section when I got it with the twins. My doctor was great, she was quick, sewed me up quite well, there's barely a scar and she warned me but it felt like I had an organ transplant or something, I couldn't walk for a while after...it was much harder for me. I recognize that Lily was much smaller than Alex so obviously your experience is valid too...after this one, I might feel differently about c-sections. We'll see."
Theresa chuckled. "No, I totally get it. Maybe in my mind c-sections are easier because I've never had one. I pushed Alex out with no epidural. Never again."
Olivia laughed, "I tried to with Lily but I gave up. I don't know why I even tried to do it without the epidural...I must have read some blogs or something. You know how as a first-time mom you, you're just so lost and there's so much information and opinions and I didn't know what direction to go in."
"It was different for me, I had my mom, my sisters and cousins, and aunts...you know the stereotypes about huge Latina families... They all told me to do the epidural but I'm stubborn so I didn't. The next one is definitely an epidural baby."
"I told them to give me as much as they legally can. Let's see how much I feel after that," Olivia said.
Fitz walked over moments later with a plate. Lucky did the same. He sat beside her and on the plate was a grilled hotdog with ketchup and grilled steak sliced in cubes. "Try the steak," Fitz said.
Olivia looked over to Theresa's plate. "Well, that's not fair, Theresa has chicken and I don't."
"I was worried the chicken would be pink on the inside. Do you want salmonella?" Fitz asked.
Olivia laughed, "All alright." She picked up one of the steak cubes with a fork and put it in her mouth then chewed. "It's really good. It is perfectly tender and I love that flavor...what it is- don't tell me...cloves?"
Fitz's eyes lit up, "yes!" he said as he grabbed her face and kissed her. "You have a fucking palette on you."
Lucky laughed, "I didn't know we were adding secret spices?"
"Too bad," Fitz said as he ate a couple of the cubes of steak then turned back to Olivia. "Take the hotdog."
She took it and Fitz headed back to the grill. "Darling, I only had one cube of steak," she complained.
"That was just the taste test, more is coming."
"Alright," she called back.
Lucky left the plate for Theresa and headed back as well. Olivia bit her hotdog. The sound of the children playing never quieted and she was glad because it meant a good night's sleep for them. She took another bite and Lily ran over. "Mommy, can I have some pleaseeeee?"
Olivia nodded as she brought it over to Lily's lips and let her take a bite. Isabelle was right behind her, "me too Mommy," she said as she opened her mouth for a bite. Olivia chuckled and gave her a bite. Daisy came next and took a large bite, leaving the butt end of the bun. They all ran off and Olivia ate the final small piece.
"Girls, Alex, come eat," Fitz called.
Lily, Daisy, and Izzy ran over to the small bench and sat down. Alex ran over after. "I still want to play," he said.
"No, right now, you have to sit and eat," Lucky said."
"NO," he screamed.
"Listen, if you don't sit and eat right now we're leaving and there will be no more playtime, so you decide," Lucky said again.
Alex huffed and sat on the floor, deciding to neither eat nor play.
"Fine," Lucky said. "But when the girls are done eating, you still can't play if you don't eat."
Fitz brought over three plates to the girls with hotdogs and ketchup then he returned with small cans of grape soda. "Shhh..don't tell your mom."
Lily giggled.
"Fitz, why are you giving them soda," Olivia called out.
"It's a party," he said, then he headed back to the grill and brought her over grilled steak. "Be cool."
She opened her mouth to complain but then she gave up and sighed. Fitz smiled. "Eat," he said. Olivia took the plate, rested it on her belly, and began eating the bit of perfectly grilled, dry-aged rib eye steak. Fitz brought over a plate of cooled, diced steak and rested it in front of Zeus who'd been lying lazily on the grass and hadn't moved much. He was old and after taking him to the vet a couple of weeks earlier, they found out he had bloat, which was a condition that was typically fatal for very large great dane breeds like Zeus, especially at his age. The vet advised putting him down but they decided to wait. They were sure the girls wouldn't take Zeus' death well so Fitz planned to put him down quietly the morning before they were to leave and let the girls know later on.
Fitz stooped down and petted him and he began to eat the steak. "Eat as much as you want, Zuzu." He headed back inside to grab extra beers and wash some of the coal and smoke off his hands. When he returned the girls were sitting beside Olivia, eating her beef from her plate.
"Hey?" he said.
"Daddy, it's so yummy," Daisy said.
"Sure, but christ, have a heart," Fitz said.
Olivia laughed, "It's okay baby, I was full anyway."
"I put a couple extra steaks on the grill for them," Lucky said.
Fitz nodded and walked over and met Lucky by the grill. When the steaks were done the girls ate and this time Alex ate as well. Fitz took his food back to sit with Olivia on the chaise chair. She leaned up slowly and he sat behind her and Olivia leaned back against his chest then turned slightly, she took his form from his plate and stuck it into a piece of steak, and fed it to him.
"That's a damn good steak," he said with a grin as he chewed.
Olivia smiled, "I told you, you're amazing at everything you do. You should listen to your wife."
"I do listen to my wife," Fitz said with a smile in between another bite she fed to him. He reached down and ran her hands over her very large belly. Her feet were very swollen, which was not something she experienced when she was pregnant with Lily. She had some swelling with the twins but not to the extent she had with the little Fitz. Olivia fed herself a piece of the steak before feeding Fitz again and when it was finished he took the plate and placed it on the small side table beside them.
"So," Lucky said. "When are we gonna link up again? We'll be in L.A., you'll be in N.Y."
"I thought it might be good for us to vacation together once a year…" Olivia said.
"Oh- yeah, that's a good idea," Lucky said.
Fitz nodded in agreement. Some time passed, and the kids went back to playing and luckily outed the grills before they relaxed together on the chairs. When Fitz checked the time, it was after 9:30 in the night.
"It's getting late," he said. "I'm going to take them up to bed."
Olivia eased up slowly. "I can help."
"No," Fitz said as he stood and she frowned as she leaned back against the chair.
"Lily, Daisy, Isabelle, it's bedtime."
Fitz was surprised there were no complaints from them. They said goodbye to Alex and Lucky before Olivia kissed them goodnight and they headed upstairs to brush their teeth and change into pajamas. Fitz read them a couple of short books before he tucked them in and left them to sleep. When he returned downstairs, Alex was still up and playing with his trucks in the grass of the patio. Fitz sat back on the chair behind Olivia then she leaned against him.
"I know you three were talking about me," Fitz said playfully.
Olivia chuckled, "I was just complaining about how lazy you've made me become."
"And I'm still bewildered that you are the miserable asshole I knew so many years ago. It's jarring."
"Is it?" Fitz said.
"Yes. As I sat here, I just remembered when that guy was trying to get me to spy on you…and we were at your office and you invited him in and broke his hand with your bare hands…which was nuts…I've never seen a grown man cry like that…and now look at you. Every time I see you, you're in dad or husband mode."
Fitz chuckled as he wrapped his arms around Olivia, "I forgot about that."
Olivia laughed as well, "and I happened to show up at the worst possible time with Lily who was like 4 months old."
"Yeah," Lucky said. "That was a crazy day…. Anyway are you ready for your son?"
"I sure am," Fitz said. "I'm very excited. I miss having a baby around."
Olivia smiled, "you do."
"I loved it when Lily was a baby…especially when she would crawl around, you'd hear her tiny little hand patter on the ground when she was coming. Are you fucking kidding me? I can't wait."
She blushed and leaned up and kissed him. They spent a bit more time talking before they finally said their goodbyes and Lucky and his family left.
Olivia slept late that morning before she woke around 10am to get ready for her last doctor appointment before they were to leave for New York the next morning. As usual, Fitz went with her to her appointment and they left the girls with Pam to watch them. Sonia was back from her vacation but she wouldn't begin working until a few days after they settled in New York.
The doctor's appointment went well and her doctor Vanessa told her that her cervix was shortening much more than typically expected at 35 weeks which meant her body was preparing for early labor.
On the drive home, it took her some time to realize they weren't actually heading home. She's been nose-deep in emails and when Fitz pulled up to Sonia's home she finally looked up and realized.
"What are we doing at Sonia's?"
"She asked us to stop by for an early dinner," he said it so casually she was confused.
"Oh," was all she uttered in response.
Fitz opened his door and let himself out then walked around to her side and opened her door as well. He took her hand and helped her out and then they both headed to the front door of Sonia's home. Olivia was out of breath from getting out of the car and walking. Fitz knocked on the door and moments later Sonia opened the front door with a smile. Olivia could hear light music in the background.
"Hey Olivia, come in, come in," Sonia said with a smile.
Olivia stepped inside with Fitz behind her and was surprised when a group screamed "Surprise!" She looked around and scanned the group, which comprised of Sonia's large family, who Olivia became very accustomed to over the years. Some of her staff and workers, a few friends even.
Lily, Daisy, and Isabelle ran to her and hugged her belly.
There were blue decorations all over Sonia's open living and dining area and a letter balloon arch that said "BABY FITZ!"
Olivia smiled at the realization that Sonia had thrown her a baby shower.
"Oh Sonia, you did this?"
Sonia nodded, "We need one last celebration before we head to New York!"
Olivia hugged her and Sonia hugged her back and kissed her cheek. She gave Fitz a hug. Olivia turned to him, "You knew right?"
"Yeah," he said with a smile.
She took some time to greet everyone as they congratulated her on the baby. Fitz stood close by with the girls and once she was done greeting everyone, he moved towards her.
"Don't ask me how I know this but I heard there's a fucking killer buffet in the dining room," Fitz whispered. "I don't know about you but I don't want to be the last in line."
Olivia laughed at how dramatic he was being. "Alright, let's head to the dining room."
In the dining room, there was an assortment of silver pans with lids and labels. There were small burners to keep them warm. A couple of Sonia's nieces were hanging around the large table to help with serving.
The girls were busy playing with Sonia's younger grandchildren and were not in sight but Fitz and Olivia could hear them running around. Sonia walked into the dining room a moment later and there were a few others scattered around, not wanting to be the first to get served food.
"When I couldn't find you I just knew he pulled you off to feed you…and himself."
"Guilty," Fitz said with a grin. "What do you have for me, Sonia? I'm really excited."
She laughed, "I have everything. Curry goat, Oxtail, I have some brown stew chicken, rice and peas, fried chicken, jerk chicken, macaroni salad, white rice, curry shrimp, sweet potato pudding, black cake, steamed veggies, fried plantains, salad-"
"Woah, woah, woah," Fitz said. "I know you didn't just say salad and veggies, Sonia. Salad and veggies don't deserve to be here. This is a party, we're meant to have fun."
She slapped his arm and laughed, "I can't deal with you."
Olivia rolled her eyes and chuckled. Sonia grabbed two plates and handed them to her nieces. "Can you help share their food?" she asked.
They nodded and Olivia only took some of the veggies and stewed chicken because she knew if she ate too much, the heartburn would be severe. Fitz on the other hand, took curry goat, oxtail, rice and peas, plantain, both fried and jerk chicken, and brown stew chicken. He walked away with two very heavy plates. They went out into the backyard to sit at a table and eat. Sonia joined them after as well. The girls were happy to play and didn't eat until a bit later when Fitz finished his food, and finally got them to calm down from all the running and playing. He took them to get food and helped them walk over with their plate and forks. Fitz carried their juice pouches.
They put their plates on the table and sat down while Fitz put their juice pouches beside their plates.
"Alright, eat up my little princesses," he said before he sat beside Olivia.
After Lily and the twins began to eat, Lily took a few bites of her chicken and turned to Sonia. "Did you know I'm a princess, Sonia, did I tell you?"
"Of course, you're a princess," Sonia said with a smile. "All three of you are."
"No, Sonia, I mean an actual princess, not a fake one," Lily said.
Fitz smiled and turned his face. Olivia was confused.
"Oh," was all Sonia said, confused as well.
Lily took another bite of her chicken. "Daddy said I came from a queen from the lands east of the Rhine river. She lived a really, really long time ago and she was a big strong warrior princess and she was powerful and amazing but yes, that means I'm a princess and so are Daisy and Isabelle."
"Oh, I didn't know that. You really are a princess," Sonia said.
Olivia shook her head, amused but said nothing until the girls finished eating and then ran off to play once again.
"Really?" she said almost immediately.
"What? No one can prove it's not true," he said.
"What's going on?" Sonia said.
"He made up the entire princess thing," Olivia said. "So now they will go around telling everyone they're royalty."
Sonia cackled and laughed then shook her head. "I really can't deal with you, Fitz."
"Don't they look like little princesses though," he said with a grin.
"How did you even come up with that?" Olivia asked.
"My mother has some Dutch and German lineage so I figured Rhineland is a good place..."
"Fitz," Olivia said.
"What? You better be glad I stopped there because I was going to tell her she was also descended from Mansa Musa the great Mali king and richest man in the world at the time but I felt like it could actually be proven to be not true so I didn't."
Olivia laughed, "you were going to tell them they were descended from African royalty."
He shrugged, "I have a feeling it's kind of true but until I know a bit more about your genealogy, I'm hesitant to make stuff up."
She held her belly and laughed even harder. "Oh my god."
"What?" he said.
"No, I can't tell you now."
"Why not?"
"What if she was from Jamaica like me," Sonia said. "What would you say?"
"I would say, they were descended from the great warriors of the Asante tribe, the greatest warriors to cross the Atlantic Ocean- and their queen who shall remain nameless was their great-great-great-great-grandmother. "
Sonia burst into a laugh and got up from the seat, cackling loudly and bent over. Olivia laid her head against the table and laughed. Everyone began to look at them and Lily and the twins ran over.
"Mommy, what's happening?" Lily asked.
"Let me tell you about your other ancestors," Fitz said.
Olivia reached over and covered his mouth with her hand, still laughing. "Ignore us honey and go play, it's alright, Daddy is just being silly."
Lily shrugged and all three of them ran away. Olivia moved her hand from Fitz's mouth and Sonia finally sat down, breathless and wheezing.
"I don't know why you stopped me."
"I'm not Jamaican Fitz," Olivia said. "And I'm not telling you."
He laughed, "Fine."
Olivia turned to Sonia, "You see what I have to deal with?"
Sonia nodded and laughed, "Yes, I see."
Daisy ran back over to them, "I'm hungry Daddy, can I have more green chicken please?" she asked.
"Green chicken?" Fitz asked.
She nodded.
"Do you mean the curry goat?" Fitz asked.
"What?" Daisy asked.
"The green chicken is curry goat," he said.
"Goat?" Daisy asked, confused.
"Yeah, do you want the goat?" Fitz asked.
"The chicken was a baby goat?" she asked.
Fitz paused for a moment when he realized what he'd said. "No, no, no, it wasn't a baby goat..it was a big, very, very old goat-"
Daisy gagged, "I ate a baby goat-"
"No honey," Olivia said, "no, it wasn't a baby goat-"
Daisy gagged again. "Don't make yourself throw up Daisy-" Sonia said.
She began to cry, "I can't eat goats- they're my friends that's not nice." She gagged again.
Fitz lifted her up and consoled her. Olivia stood slowly from the chair and took a few steps over to them to help console Daisy. "hey honey, it's okay, I promise you didn't hurt a baby goat okay. It's just that when some animals are very old and they die they become food to make everyone else healthy and strong. It's not a bad thing. It's how everyone is able to live. If there was no food, we would all be sick and really hungry."
"Why do we have to eat animals, we can eat veggies and fruit?" Daisy asked.
"You also need animals because it makes you strong, you need a little bit of everything," Fitz said. "You like milk for your cereal right, it comes from a cow's breast just like when you and your sisters were babies, you drank milk from your mother's breast."
"I did," Daisy said.
"Yes you did," Olivia said. She took her phone from the table and quickly scrolled to an album a few years back and found a picture of her breastfeeding. She wasn't sure which one of the twins she was breastfeeding but she showed it to Daisy anyway. "See, here I am feeding you milk from my breast to make you grow from a tiny little baby to the big girl you are now."
Daisy looked at the picture and smiled and Olivia wiped her eyes. "We'll make sure you never eat goats because they're your friend, alright."
"But it tastes so yummy," Daisy said.
Fitz bit his lip to stifle a laugh. Olivia pinched him playfully because he was making her lose her composure. "I know it does, you get to decide if you want to eat it or not but I promise, they can be your friends even if you like how yummy curry goat is when Sonia makes it."
Daisy nodded again and wiped her eyes then she shimmied out of Fitz's arms.
"Are you still hungry?" Fitz asked.
She nodded.
"Do you want…the green chicken?" Fitz asked.
Daisy nodded again.
"Okay, I'll get it for you and call you when it is here," he said.
She nodded again and ran off. Fitz turned to Olivia. "Did I mention that I fucking love being a father?"
She chuckled, "You've mentioned it a bunch."
When the curry goat came Daisy ate it all with no fuss and even licked her fingers when she was done.
Fitz laughed as he watched her skip off happily.
"What?" Olivia asked with a smile.
"I was worried she'd want to be vegan for a second but my blood is strong in her, the carnivore in her won."
Olivia laughed. The shower continued for some time and ended later in the afternoon. Olivia thanked everyone and especially thanked Sonia for having the shower for her and they headed home to spend their last night in their home in Beverly Hills.
