"I see you are alone?" Dr Clarkson said while Cora walked in his room.
"Lord Grantham needed him today and we did not want to postpone this appointment." Cora had been confident when she told Robert she could do this appointment on her own, but now she was having doubts. "Do I need to reschedule and make sure Mr. Crawley is here too?"
Dr. Clarkson shook his head and smiled at her. "No need for that. Since you are the one we are talking about. How are you feeling?"
Cora smiled back. "The painkillers are like miracle workers. When a bad headache comes up, they instantly work and I feel much better."
"How often do you have these bad headaches at the moment?"
"Two sometimes three times a week." Cora knew that her headaches had gotten more frequent.
"We should make a new scan of your brain. I need to know why your headaches are so frequent at the moment. I will also ask the nurse to draw some blood, so I can see how your hormone levels are."
"Do I need to worry about this?" Cora asked scared.
"I am not worried, in the past weeks I have read about your condition and it does happen often that the headaches get worse at first, we just need to be sure that there is no more fluid present or that it has not increased in volume. I made enquiries at other hospitals, including in London." Dr. Clarkson paused. "Lady Grantham told me you were worried if the hospital care here in Downton was up to standard."
Cora felt her cheeks burning. "I did not want to imply that you and your staff were not good doctors. I was concerned..."
"I suspected as much when Lady Grantham told me. You do not have to worry Milady. I will do anything to make sure you are back in good health soon. You can count on our best team and in doubt we will ask for help."
"Thank you." Cora was embarrassed, why did Violet tell this to Dr. Clarkson?
"I can have the scan ready this afternoon, can you come back for it today?"
Cora needed to check her agenda. "At what time do you want me to be back here?" She had an appointment with her editor, she had the first books ready and Cora would sign a couple of them already.
"Let me see." He looked at his watch. "It is now eleven o'clock, can you be here at four?"
Her meeting was at one o'clock in the local pub. "I will be here at four."
"Perfect, we will make the scan immediately."
"Here you go." Christopher handed her a copy of her book.
Cora took it and looked at her publisher in full delight. "It looks amazing," Cora said while admiring the front cover. When she turned it around and started reading her smile faded away. On the front was written. C. Levinson. But on the back, there was Cora Crawley Levinson. "Why did you do that?"
"What do you mean?"
"Christopher, you perfectly know what I mean. Why is my legal name on here?"
"As I told you before, your name will help with selling your book."
"And I told you that I want to keep my married name separate. I write these books under my own name. If you do not change the cover, this will be the last book you published for me." Cora stunned herself with her outburst.
"But I already printed 20 books, and this afternoon the presses will start for the rest."
"That leaves you enough time to change the cover and due to your own fault you are stuck with 20 useless books. I will not have my legal name on it. I told you that I want to publish under C. Levinson."
Christopher gave her a surprised look. "That means you are willing to sell less, because you refuse to change your name?"
"I did change my name legally. I am Cora Crawley Levinson and I am proud of that name, but my books are mine and have nothing to do with the Crawley family. I want to sell them on my own and not use my new name to get more sales." Cora looked at her watch. "And when you do not mind, I will have to go soon. So can I trust you that the cover will be changed?"
"Of course you can."
"I came as quickly as I could." Robert said out of breath, he had clearly been running. He put his hand on Cora's waist and kissed her cheek.
"Thank you darling."
"I did not know you would get results from scans today? Did I forget about scans, I thought you had a normal appointment this morning?"
Cora put her arm around his back. "I did have a normal appointment this morning, but Dr Clarkson wanted to make new scans and he did that this morning too."
"That does not sound good." Robert's voice trembled.
Cora squeezed his side. "Dr Clarkson said that we did not have to worry, but he wanted to be sure the treatment is working. He did inquire with some doctors in London."
"Did you ask for that?" Robert asked surprised.
"Apparently your mother did tell him I was worried this hospital would not be good enough."
"Of course she did. I have to be honest, that I had my concerns too."
Cora stopped walking and turned towards Robert. "What do you mean? You told me we could come here for our appointments, because it would be as good as in London?"
"I did, but that was before your condition turned out to be serious. I thought that for infertility it would not matter, but with your brain I was not that convinced. But my father told me that I was overreacting, I almost dragged you back to London."
This made Cora laugh. "Let us go inside sweetheart." She pulled her arm back and rested it against her side. She was getting used to the protocol, when she could and could not Robert so closely.
"I am sorry Mama, but no we will not eat here tonight."
"Why did you not tell me earlier, now Mr. Patmore has probably already prepared dinner."
"She would not mind, I am sure. If you want I can go down myself and tell her, that Cora and I will not join dinner."
"That is not necessary, I will tell her. Are you going to tell me, why you all of a sudden decided to go out?"
At that moment Robert heard Cora's heals click on the stairs. He looked up and was mesmerised, she was wearing a tight fitting blue dress, with buttons from top to bottom. Her curves were perfectly accentuated by the dress. He swallowed visible, what resulted in a wide smile on Cora's face. "You look amazing, darling." He said when she reached him.
Cora felt her cheeks colour, Violet gave her a dark look, what she tried to ignore.
"What a beautiful restaurant." Cora said while they sat down at their table.
"This is an old Victorian country house." Robert explained. "I wanted a special place for tonight."
"I am amazed you could get a table this last minute."
Robert smirked. "To be honest, we got lucky, they are usually booked."
The waiter came with the ordered champagne, Robert waited for Cora to take her glass. "A toast on the amazing news."
Cora smiled. "On a future as a family."
"This will be the first time in my life that I will drink alcohol free champagne." Robert joked.
"You could have ordered a normal one, I am the one who should stay of the alcohol for the coming months." She felt her cheeks colour from happiness.
Robert reached over the table and took Cora's hand in his. "I will take such good care of you. We will make sure you will get the best care. As Dr Clarkson said, monthly check ups and everything else that we can do to make sure you and our little bean will be healthy."
"I was not expecting to get this result today."
"When he shared the results of the scan and that the fluid had gone down I thought that was wonderful news, but than he said that you are expecting, I was flabbergasted to be honest."
"Flabbergasted but happy I hope?"
"Over the moon happy." Robert smiled. He looked at his watch. "You should call your mother, it is day time now over in New York."
"After dinner I will call her, thank you for thinking of her."
"She is going to be a grandmother, of course I would think of her."
"That does sound wonderful." Cora said, she rested her hand on her abdomen. "I cannot believe that a little one is growing in here."
