Dark the Dawn. When Day Is Nigh

For Kim the rest of the party passed without incident. A handful of people wanted to meet Shego's friend 'Megan' but they did it from genuine interest and not any ulterior motives to prove her identity false. There were some well-meaning questions asked in regard to her personal history, but Kim handled them with aplomb.

Most people prefer to talk about themselves rather than listen to another person talk about herself. Kim provided short generic answers to questions about 'Megan' – often even telling the truth about herself – and then asked about the questioner's life. In the two hours until the end of the party Kim learned far more about Shego's co-workers than they learned about Megan. Kim regretted the deception, a couple of the people she chatted with would have had the potential for becoming friends if Kim were allowed to be herself.

The remainder of the party did not go as well for Shego. With Kim easily identified by Victoria Schwartz the green woman feared others would uncover it as well and Shego would suffer the worst humiliation of her life. In anticipation of the disaster Shego tried to dull the coming pain with copious amounts of alcohol.

When the party broke up Shego was in no condition to drive... In no condition to drive safely at least. Fortunately she was still sober enough to recognize the fact and turned her keys over to Kim without an argument.

Shego leaned against the passenger door and closed her eyes as Kim started the engine, "God, I am so wasted."

"Don't pass out on me," Kim warned. "I don't know where you live."

The green woman managed to stay awake enough to direct Kim, with only a couple problems when Shego's condition left her unable to remember which direction was right and which was left.

"I'll get you into your place and call a taxi," Kim promised as she parked the car. "Which apartment?"

"Three-eighteen... Take the car... You can bring... bring it..." With the few brain cells still functioning Shego had determined Kim would probably put the taxi fare on the tab for this evening masquerade. And, while she still had no ideas what the damages would be, anything she could do to stay on Kim's good side was probably a good idea.

"Take your car? I'll bring it back tomorrow."

"Not early. Head gonna hurt."

"It probably hurts now," Kim chirped as she helped Shego out of the passenger seat. Kim assisted Shego inside. "Are you going to be okay?" the redhead asked as she opened the apartment door. "You said I could take your car?"

"Princess, if I die, keep the car. I'll be fine."

Kim considered pointing out Shego was not fine at the moment, but let it pass. "I'll call tomorrow."

"Not early."

Kim returned Shego's car early the next afternoon. The former thief was in green and black silk pajamas when she answered the door.

"You need to put on clothes," Kim told her.

"To watch football?"

"No, so you can drive me back to my place. I couldn't drive both cars here."

Shego opened her mouth to argue, couldn't come up with a good argument, and closed her mouth. "Half-time. Only four minutes left."

"Four football minutes can take a half hour."

"You got anything better to do?"

"Fine, but get dressed in a commercial break – or during a time-out."

"Fine."

During the drive back to Kim's apartment she informed Shego, "I've totaled up my bill for last night."

"What do I owe you?"

"Sometime during my Christmas break – I'll give you the choice of dates – you're taking me to a movie. You're driving, and paying for everything."

"Christmas break?" Shego asked in surprise.

"I'll give you the dates."

"No, why aren't you going back to Middleton to see family?"

"Mom and dad will be in Paris to celebrate their twenty-fifth."

"You could go back to see your friends."

"And Mom and Dad let me know I could babysit my brothers if I went home. How would you feel about babysitting the Wegos?"

"They're too old to need... I see your point."

"So, I'll stay here. Actually, Jim and Tim don't need a real baby-sitter, but they need someone to keep them from doing anything stupid and dangerous. It sounds like a full-time job. So I can stay here and get some reading done for next semester. Oh, and I'll try and find someone on the dating app. And if I get lucky and find someone nice I'll figure out something different you can do to repay me."

"And if I find someone on the app?"

"That's why I'm letting you pick the day. Unless you find someone you want to be with every minute you aren't working."

Shego closed one eye and looked thoughtful, "You know, Pumpkin, in a weird sort of way it sounds like you're asking me for a date."

Kim snorted, "No way. If I were asking you on a date I'd be paying, or at least going Dutch."

"So... You're telling me to ask you on a date?"

"Forget the word date. I just need to get out of my apartment at least once during break, and this is strictly for services rendered... Oh, and I trust your taste in movies. You can pick the flick."

"So... Watching a movie with me is better than... Was it Billy Joel? Better than drinking alone?"

"This is way better than going to a movie by myself – you're paying."
