It was about 10 minutes into Ancient Runes when Amy nudged me. I looked up. She was pointing towards the door where Umbridge had just walked in. She walked up to Professor Babbling.

"Good afternoon. You received my note regarding the date and time of your inspection?" Umbridge asked Babbling

"Yes of course, feel free to do your thing"

Umbridge sat down in a corner, and throughout most of the lesson, simply made notes on a clipboard, which was better behaviour than I expected. I was expecting at least a disparaging remark or two. Shortly before the end, she went around the class and asked a couple of people what they thought of the classes, to which she was told they were good, which was the truth. Sure, the class itself wasn't hugely enjoyable, but Babbling got the content across fine and she never had a huge amount of trouble getting us through the exams.

"You seem to know YOUR subject matter well enough anyway" Umbridge said to Babbling. "Now, how long have you been teaching here?"

"Five years full time, a further year previously as an apprentice" replied Babbling

"And it was Professor Dumbledore who hired you?"

"Yes technically, although it came via a recommendation from the previous, now retired, Professor Whitecroft"

"I see. Well, you will receive your inspection results within a few days from now"

The bell rang at that moment.

When lunch rolled around, we arrived at the Gryffindor table just as Fred was asking Harry, Ron and Hermione if they'd had an inspected lesson yet.

"No," said Hermione at once, "have you?"

"Just now, before lunch," said George. "Charms."

"Ginny and I had it in Ancient Runes first thing" added Amy

"What was it like?" Harry and Hermione asked together.

Fred shrugged. "Not that bad. Umbridge just lurked in the corner making notes on a clipboard. You know what Flitwick's like, he treated her like a guest, didn't seem to bother him at all. She didn't say much. Asked Alicia a couple of questions about what the classes are normally like, Alicia told her they were really good, that was it."

"Yeah, ours was pretty much the same. Babbling's competent enough, there's no reason she should get in any trouble" I said

"I can't see old Flitwick getting marked down either," said George, "he usually gets everyone through their exams all right."

"Who've you got this afternoon?" Fred asked Harry. "Trelawney —"

"A T if ever I saw one —"

"— and Umbridge herself."

"Well, be a good boy and keep your temper with Umbridge today," said George. "Angelina'll do her nut if you miss any more Quidditch practices. You too Ginny"

But while Umbridge gave me no specific reason to lose my temper that afternoon, she did with Harry, as we found out later that evening that he had been given another week's worth of detentions. The reason? After Hermione had lost points due to disagreeing with Wilbert Slinkhard's opinion on jinxes, Umbridge had spoken about how other teachers had given them more license than she had, and that Quirrell was the only one that might have passed an inspection. Harry then lashed out, saying that Voldemort was on the back of Quirrell's head.

Angelina cornered him just as he arrived at the Gryffindor table for breakfast on Tuesday and shouted so loudly that Professor McGonagall came sweeping down upon the pair of them from the staff table.

"Miss Johnson, how dare you make such a racket in the Great Hall! Five points from Gryffindor!"

"But Professor — he's gone and landed himself in detention again —"

"What's this, Potter?" said Professor McGonagall sharply, rounding on Harry. "Detention? From whom?"

"From Professor Umbridge," muttered Harry, not meeting Professor McGonagall's beady, square-framed eyes.

"Are you telling me," she said, lowering her voice so that the group of curious Ravenclaws behind them could not hear, "that after the warning I gave you last Monday you lost your temper in Professor Umbridge's class again?"

"Yes," Harry muttered, speaking to the floor. "Potter, you must get a grip on yourself! You are heading for serious trouble! Another five points from Gryffindor!"

"But — what? Professor, no!" Harry said, furious at this injustice. "I'm already being punished by her, why do you have to take points as well?"

"Yeah Professor, that really isn't fair at all, he's not done anything to you!" I added

"Because detentions do not appear to have any effect on you whatsoever!" said Professor McGonagall tartly. "Please do not get involved Miss Weasley unless you want to risk losing points too! No, not another word of complaint, Potter! And as for you, Miss Johnson, you will confine your shouting matches to the Quidditch pitch in future or risk losing the team Captaincy!"

She strode back toward the staff table. Angelina gave Harry a look of deepest disgust and stalked away, upon which Harry flung himself onto the bench beside Ron, fuming.

"She's taken points off Gryffindor because I'm having my hand sliced open every night! How is that fair, how?"

"I know, mate," said Ron sympathetically, tipping bacon onto Harry's plate, "she's bang out of order."

Hermione, however, merely rustled the pages of her Daily Prophet and said nothing.

"You think McGonagall was right, do you?" said Harry angrily to the picture of Cornelius Fudge obscuring Hermione's face.

"I wish she hadn't taken points from you, but I think she's right to warn you not to lose your temper with Umbridge," said Hermione's voice, while Fudge gesticulated forcefully from the front page, clearly giving some kind of speech.

"Well I'm with Harry, I think it was ridiculous" said Amy, and Andrew nodded alongside her. Demelza however, remained unusually silent.

"It's not like you not to chime in D, you feeling ok?" I said, patting her back

Demelza bit her lip and sighed "I don't know, usually I'd agree with Hermione, but Umbridge is on such an otherworldly level of awful that I dunno if I can bring myself to criticise anyone for having a go at her."
