Jane lay on her back in the middle of Maura's bed with Maura's head resting on her chest as she lay snuggled into the brunette's side. Jane's fingers were lightly running through the blonde curls as they lay in a comfortable silence. Things had settled down since Luna's little outburst and it seemed that the young girl was just afraid of Maura leaving them. Jane had made a point of having more time with just the two of them and they had just started to introduce time where it was just Maura and Luna. Their routine seemed to be working well. Maura had even given Luna free rein to redecorate her own bedroom in Maura's house to help the girl feel more at ease and to show her that they were in this for the long run.

"Ma." Luna pushed open the bedroom door and padded into Maura's bedroom. "I don't feel well." Jane shot out of bed as fast as she could as she caught sight of her daughter's expression. She knew what that look meant, Luna was going to be sick. The brunette ushered the mini Rizzoli into the en suite of Maura's bedroom and got her to the toilet just in time. At the sound of the young girl retching Maura got out of bed as well to fetch a glass of water.

"It's okay, baby, I'm here." Jane gently rubbed her daughter's back as she continued to be sick and cry at the same time. Maura appeared at her side with a glass of water which Jane accepted gratefully. Luna sat back on her heels and took a small sip of water and wiped her mouth. "Oh, sweetheart." Jane pushed hair out of Luna's eyes and felt her forehead to see how hot she was. "You've caught the bug that is going around school." Maura hovered in the bathroom doorway as she watched mother and daughter, unsure of what to do.

"Can I stay with you?" Luna asked weakly and leaned into Jane's side.

"Of course," Maura piped up from the doorway. She could see the hesitation in Jane's face and knew the brunette was thinking about her.

"I can go and stay with Luna," Jane offered, aware of the white carpet in Maura's bedroom.

"Don't be silly, she can stay in here with us, we're closer to the bathroom."

Jane gave a grateful smile and helped Luna up off of the floor before she guided her to the bed. Maura lay down on the left side of the bed, Jane in the middle and Luna on the right side for easy access to the bathroom. The mini Rizzoli snuggled into her mother's side and instantly fell asleep.

"I hope she doesn't get you sick." Jane turned her head to look at her girlfriend.

"This comes with having children, doesn't it?" Maura gave her a smile and gently caressed Jane's cheek.

"It does but I'd hate for her to get you sick. I'd also hate for her to stain your carpets."

"Jane, stop worrying. It's all cleanable. The house needs to be more lived in anyway," she joked which earned her a smile from Jane. "I'm in this for everything, okay?" The blonde linked their fingers together and gave a gentle squeeze. "And if that means I get sick, then I get sick, okay? I'm here for it all." Jane smiled and rested her forehead against the blonde's before they both settled down in the hopes of some sleep.

Every hour Luna was up being sick, Jane making sure to get her daughter to the toilet in time while Maura ensured there was fresh water for her to sip at afterwards. By the morning everyone was exhausted and it seemed like Luna had stopped being sick. Jane settled Luna onto the sofa and covered her with a blanket and a bowl in front of the sofa, just in case. Maura made a pot of strong coffee and poured them both a cup. Once Jane was happy that Luna was settled and drifting back off to sleep she made her way into the kitchen and wrapped her arms around Maura's waist.

"Thank you," the brunette whispered and let her eyes drift closed for a moment. Even though there hadn't been much Maura could do during the night, just knowing that she wasn't alone had been enough for Jane. It had been lonely being a single parent sometimes and having to deal with everything.

"Breakfast?" Maura questioned and turned in Jane's arms so that they were facing each other.

"That sounds good but you don't have to cook, you're just as tired as I am." Jane pulled back slightly and let her hands rest on the blonde's hips. Maura had wrapped a silk dressing gown over her pyjamas while Jane was still wearing her BPD top and a pair of shorts.

"How about eggs?" Maura walked towards her fridge and pulled out the carton of eggs. "And when Luna wakes later I can make her some toast if she's feeling up to it." Jane gave a nod and slid onto one of the bar stools, her chin coming to rest on a fist. A comfortable silence settled over them as Jane watched Maura make them a small breakfast of scrambled eggs before the brunette poured them both another cup of coffee. Luna didn't stir from the sofa and Jane hoped that was the end of the sickness.

They had just finished their breakfast when a knock at the door caught their attention. Maura frowned, she wasn't expecting any visitors, and ran a hand through her hair before she opened it to reveal her mother, Constance Isles, stood there.

"Maura, darling." Constance smiled and air kissed both of her daughter's cheeks before she stepped inside the house. "I'm sorry I didn't call sooner, it's a last minute visit." The older woman turned to walk further into the house but stopped as she saw Jane, still in her pyjamas, loading the dishwasher from breakfast. "Oh, you have company." Constance then let her eyes run over her daughter, also in pyjamas, before she gave a small nod of understanding.

"Mother, this is my girlfriend, Jane. Jane, this is my mother, Constance," Maura introduced the two. It was not how she had imagined the two of them meeting.

"Hi." Jane gave a smile and wiped her hands together after she had pushed the dishwasher closed.

"It seems I'm interrupting." Constance looked Jane over with a small frown before Luna gave a small whimper from the sofa. In an instant, Jane made her way to the sofa to check on her daughter.

"Is she okay?" Maura asked as she watched Jane look down at Luna.

"Still asleep." Jane adjusted the blanket that had slipped slightly. "I think the sickness has passed now."

"Jane's daughter caught a sickness bug," Maura explained at her mother's confused expression. "We've been up most of the night with her."

"Oh, I see." Constance gave a small nod. "How old is she?" She asked as Jane joined them in the kitchen again.

"She's eleven." Jane smiled softly as she always did when talking about Luna.

Constance gave another small nod as she took in the information. "Maura, darling, I came to invite you to the art gala this evening."

"Oh," Maura's face fell at the invite. She was always expected to attend, even if she already had plans. "I'm not sure I can make it tonight," she started, hoping for once Constance would understand.

"I see." Constance pursed her lips together in thought as she glanced towards the sofa, to Jane and then back to Maura. "Next time. I have to run." Maura let out a small breath and walked her mother to the door, receiving some more air kisses before she left.

"You could have gone," Jane watched as Maura walked back into the kitchen.

"I know and mother expected me to but Luna isn't well and I'd rather spend the evening with both of you. Plus, being a parent or a parent figure is all about making compromises, isn't it? I don't want Luna to think that I chose to go out over staying in with her when she isn't feeling well." Maura gave a small shrug, she had been doing a lot of thinking about how to make the new dynamic work for all of them and the role that she would play. She might not have everything figured out but the one thing she did know was that she wanted to make sure that Luna always felt wanted by her, that she was never a burden. That was a feeling Maura had grown up with, she always felt like a burden to her parents and she didn't want Luna to feel that with her.

Jane smiled softly and held her arms out to Maura who fell into them. "Thank you," the brunette whispered. "Thank you for choosing us."
