She heard the sound of a door opening and closing. She chose to ignore it. She heard the sounds of someone walking downstairs. She decided to ignore it again. She heard the sound of something falling. She chose to get up. She opened her eye, sat up and looked at the clock on her bedside table. It was 7:15. She drank the water on the bedside table, got up and walked into the bathroom. She peed, washed her hands, brushed her teeth and washed her face with cold water. Then, she walked downstairs, getting the attention of some maids who said in choir "Good morning, Mademoiselle Niffty". Niffty smiled at them and kept walking. After surpassing a few doors, she turned to the right, entering the dining room. The dining room had a dining table similar to the ones in the royal palaces, but much shorter than an actual one. It's still very long, even though it's usually only her, her father and her uncle, whom she prefers to refer to as Professor Husk, that eat there. Well, only she and her uncle now, since her father disappeared four months ago.
The kitchen was attached to the dining room. Different smells spread from the kitchen, filling the dining room with a mixture of all the smells, which made her stomach growl in hunger. Husk was sitting at the table, his eyes staring midair, his expression thoughtful. He didn't seem to notice her presence. Niffty was going to take a step when the cat's eyes turned to look at her as he spoke. "Good morning, Niffty. Had a good rest?" Husk asked, smiling at her. "Morning, professor. I rested well, thank you" she replied, smiling back at him. "That's good to hear," he said. "You didn't have any nightmares, did you?" he asked. "Of course not!" she replied while she sat in her seat. "Alright, then," he said. "Got any information about my father yet?" she asked, looking at him with the expression of a curious child. "Sadly, no" Husk responded with a sad tone. "Oh" her expression quickly turned sad.
After her father's disappearance, Niffty had been asking Husk for any information about her father's disappearance. Sadly, most of them were useless in the search and made her feel worse than she already felt. It wasn't too bad back then, but as people started to make theories surrounding his disappearance, she started to fear the worst. Husk had reassured her that he was still alive since their chains were still there, but it didn't help her much. After some time, she started having nightmares surrounding her father. When Husk found out, he gave her comfort by listening to her rants about some of her acquaintances who joked about her father's disappearance, telling her bedtime stories to help her sleep and hugging and reassuring her when she had them. He would plan activities for her to keep her mind occupied so she wouldn't think about her father.
After a while, the breakfast was ready. They drank milk, ate some hard boiled eggs, Easter bread and Easter biscuits.
Afterwards, she went to her room, while Husk went upstairs. She grabbed her pencil case and then went to the third floor.
The rooms on the third floor were similar to the classrooms in the schools, but smaller. She surpassed the Music room, the Science lab, the theatre and the computer room.
Then, she opened a door and entered the Art lab. Her uncle was sitting on a chair and gestured for her to sit in the chair next to him. She complied and looked at the table where they usually put the supplies that they needed. There was paint, plastic cups, brushes, plastic gloves, paper and eggs. She looked at her uncle, waiting for him to say what were they going to do that day. "Niffty, today we're going to paint some eggs since it's Easter" Husk explained. "Yeah!" she exclaimed excitedly. Husk smiled fondly, then ordered her to put on some plastic gloves. Niffty quickly nodded and did what she was ordered to.
Then, Husk showed her for the 17th time how to paint the eggs. "First, you pour some paint in a plastic cup, you grab an egg and put it on some paper so the table doesn't get dirty...I mean, not too dirty" he explained while pouring some red paint into a plastic cup and getting some paper. "Then you dip a brush in the paint and start painting the eggshell" he continued. Niffty observed with all the focus she had on the process and grabbed a glove to wear it. Husk explained some techniques to make patterns while showing the process. He used red paint and green paint.
After he finished, he left it to dry on its own and let Niffty start. Niffty used yellow paint, green paint and red paint, while Husk observed. Niffty made a pattern of hearts. It had a green background and a pattern of yellow and red hearts. Husk gave her a smile of approval. On the second egg, Niffty tried to draw Alastor's voodoo symbols on it, failing spectacularly. She tried again on the third egg with Husk's help. It wasn't perfect, but it was decent at least.
Husk gave her a light squeeze on the shoulder. "It's good," he said reassuring her. "It's decent enough, sweetheart. Better than the one before" he patted her back. "But I never said that I was upset, sir" Niffty replied, her eye looking at him, waiting for a response. Husk remained quiet. Then he stood up and started putting in order the paint. "Let's just put those back on the shelves. Can you help wash the brushes and clean the table?" he asked, ignoring the question she had asked. "Sure" Niffty replied, smiling. She knew she wouldn't be able to get an answer out of him, so why bother?
After they finished cleaning, they left the eggs to dry while they went in the dining room for lunch. They had roasted chicken, roast ham, some pasta and Simnel cake, of which the pieces that remain are given to the staff.
In the afternoon, Niffty was reading a book entitled "The little prince" while a puppet was laying on her lap. The book and the puppet were both birthday gifts. The book was gifted to her by her uncle, while the puppet was gifted to her by her father when they were alive.
It was her first birthday after her parents died in the stock market crash of 1929. She was feeling sad due to them not being here. Mister Alastor knocked on her door, asking if he could enter. She let him in and asked what did he want. He gave a box to her and told her to open it. She took out a puppet from the box. It was a red bear with buttons for eyes. It was made by him. "Happy birthday, my dear," he told her, smiling. She hugged him as a way to say thank you.
Then, someone knocked on the door. Knock one second later knock knock. She knew already who was it by the knocking sounds. She opened the door and asked what did he want. Husk stood in the hallway looking at her with a smile. "The eggs are dry" he responded. "Really?" Niffty asked. She expected them to take a lot more time to dry. "Yes, they are" Husk responded. Niffty immediately rushed up the stairs and turned to look at Husk with an excited look, maybe a little too excited. "C' mon, uncle, fast!" she screamed from the stairs. Husk's ears flinched a little at the sound and followed her. The eggs were more bright than when they painted them. Niffty inspected her eggs proud of her work. Husk patted her head, smiling fondly. She noticed that one of his arms was behind his back. "What are you hiding behind your back?" she asked staring at him. Husk took out from his back a chocolate egg and gave it to her. Her eye lit up, thanked him with a hug and started eating the egg without a word. Husk looked at her smiling.
That's how they passed their first Easter without Alastor.
