Chapter 23

The crowd buzzed with excitement as the next match of the Friendship Cup quarterfinals was announced: Dawn vs. Iris.

The battlefield shimmered under the bright arena lights. Cameras panned across the eager audience while the screen displayed the matchup between two powerful young trainers. Dawn stood tall and focused, her blue eyes gleaming with determination. Iris, across from her, rolled her shoulders and let out a breath, her expression tight with nerves.

In the Champions' observation lounge, the tension was just as thick.

"This should be an interesting match," Diantha mused, watching the screen as the trainers took their positions.

"Dawn's got the discipline and planning," Cynthia added. "But Iris's Dragonite has raw power on its side… assuming it listens."

"That's the key," Steven said quietly. "No matter how strong the Pokémon, if they're not in sync with their trainer, it becomes a liability."

From the stands, Ash leaned forward with wide eyes. "Come on, Iris… you've got this."

"She's nervous," Cilan observed beside him, his brow furrowed. "Dragonite hasn't been listening since she caught it. If she can't connect with it soon, this might end quickly."

"From the left side of the field—Coordinator, performer, and now a powerhouse trainer—Dawn of Twinleaf Town!" the announcer called, prompting a cheer from the audience.

Dawn stepped forward, her blue eyes calm and determined. "Let's do this Lopunny, spotlight!" she called, tossing her Poké Ball into the air.

The elegant rabbit Pokémon landed in a graceful spin, striking a confident pose with a glint in her eyes.

"And from the right side— the fierce Dragon Master in training—Iris!"

Iris gripped her Poké Ball tightly, then threw it high. "Dragonite, let's go!"

The massive orange dragon emerged with a roar, flapping his wings hard enough to shake the ground beneath them. But from the moment he landed, it was clear—Dragonite still wasn't interested in taking direction. He let out a snort, glancing back at Iris with impatience.

In the Champions' observation room, Alder leaned forward. "Still not listening, huh?"

Steven narrowed his eyes. "Iris has to find a way to connect, or this will be over quickly."

"Dawn might be a Coordinator, but she battles like a tactician," Cynthia said with a small smile. "She'll use every opening."

Back on the field, the referee raised a hand. "Battle, begin!"

Without hesitation, Iris shouted, "Dragonite, use Dragon Rush!"

But Dragonite didn't even glance her way—it acted on instinct, launching forward like a comet of blue energy. Lopunny leapt aside at the last second, flipping midair to avoid the brunt of the attack.

"Dodge and counter with Ice Beam!" Dawn commanded.

Lopunny spun midair, firing a shimmering beam of icy energy that grazed Dragonite's shoulder, forcing the dragon to pull up sharply.

"That's it!" Dawn called. "Keep your distance and wear it down!"

In the observation lounge, Leon whistled. "She's fast. That Lopunny moves like it's performing a Contest routine."

"Dawn's turning the battlefield into a stage," Cynthia said, smiling with pride. "She knows how to command elegance and precision."

Dragonite dove again, firing a Thunder Punch midair—once again ignoring Iris's order for Dragon Claw. Lopunny narrowly avoided the hit and bounced off the battlefield wall with incredible agility.

"Ice Beam, now!" Dawn called again.

This time, the attack struck Dragonite's wing directly, causing it to crash hard into the ground.

Iris flinched. "Dragonite, get up! You need to listen to me!"

But Dragonite simply roared and pushed itself up with frustration, still acting on its own judgment.

Back in the lounge, Alder crossed his arms. "She's trying, but that Dragonite's acting like a wild card."

"She's going to lose if she doesn't rein it in soon," Lance muttered. "And she knows it."

Leon folded his arms. "Let's see if Iris can hold her ground."

"Lopunny, Bounce!" Dawn called.

Lopunny leapt high into the air, her form a blur against the sky.

Iris pointed up. "Dragonite, Flamethrower—straight up!"

But Dragonite didn't move.

"I said Flamethrower!" Iris shouted, frustration growing.

At the last second, Dragonite lazily looked up and opened his mouth. The flames came too late—Lopunny twisted in midair and struck him hard across the back of the head, sending him stumbling forward.

"Dragonite, Dragon Claw!" Iris ordered.

This time, Dragonite responded—though it was more like he was indulging her than obeying. He lunged forward, his claws glowing with a vibrant green hue.

"Lopunny, Dodge and use Quick Attack!"

Lopunny zipped to the side, but Dragonite's reach was faster than expected. His claw caught her in the side and sent her tumbling across the field.

"Lopunny!" Dawn gasped, eyes narrowing.

Lopunny rolled to her feet, wincing. She was fast, but Dragonite had size and raw power.

"You okay?" Dawn called.

Lopunny gave a determined nod.

Iris gritted her teeth. "Dragonite, Flamethrower!"

Lopunny landed just as flames surged toward her. She tried to dodge but wasn't fast enough—fire licked across her side, making her stagger and drop to a knee.

"Lopunny!" Dawn called.

Lopunny stood quickly, brushing off the pain, eyes narrowed. She was still ready to fight.

"Let's end this," Dawn whispered. Then louder: "Ice Punch—go!"

Lopunny sprinted forward, one paw glowing with icy energy. Dragonite roared and charged head-on with Thunder Punch.

The two collided mid-field. The impact sent shockwaves through the stadium. Lopunny slid back, panting, her fur slightly singed—but she was still standing. Dragonite growled, clearly frustrated.

"Still not listening," Iris muttered. "Why won't you just trust me?!"

Iris bit her lip, heart pounding. She remembered how proud she'd felt the day she caught Dragonite… but that pride had slowly become frustration. Was she failing him—or had she never earned his trust to begin with?

The crowd watched in tense silence as Iris clenched her fists, trying to find her voice. "Dragonite, please—this time, with me. Use Thunder Punch again!"

But Dragonite ignored her again, spreading its wings and taking to the skies.

Lopunny had already taken heavy damage, and Dawn wasn't sure how much more she could take in her current state. Seeing Dragonite take to the sky, she knew this was her opening. She scanned the crowd for reassurance—and her eyes locked with Alain's. Both nodded in unison.

"Alright Lopunny, time to take centre stage" Dawn said with determination.

She reached down and touched her Mega Bracelet, the Lopunnite gem glowing.

"Mega Evolve!"

Light exploded across the battlefield. Lopunny shimmered, her form twisting and extending—leaner, faster, more ferocious. Mega Lopunny landed with grace, fur flowing behind her and ears sharp like twin blades.

The crowd gasped. Mega Lopunny's entire presence radiated power—gone was the graceful performer. What stood now was a battle-hardened fighter, swift and merciless.

Ash jumped to his feet. "Whoa…" Ash breathed, eyes wide with excitement. "I didn't know she could do that!"

"Neither did Iris," Cilan murmured, impressed.

Iris looked stunned. "She's Mega Evolved?!"

"High Jump Kick!" Dawn shouted.

Mega Lopunny blurred forward, striking Dragonite hard across the chest before it could react. The Dragon Pokémon crashed hard into the ground, groaning as it tried to rise.

"Follow up with Ice Beam!"

Lopunny raised a paw and launched a brilliant stream of ice. It struck Dragonite squarely, freezing parts of its wings and tail. Dragonite roared, trying to shake it off.

"Thunder Punch—now!" Iris cried.

Dragonite responded, lunging forward and landing a hit on Mega Lopunny's shoulder. She winced, skidding back, but stayed upright.

"She's tough," Lance noted from above. "That Mega form changed everything."

"Dawn knew exactly when to evolve," Steven said. "She waited until Lopunny was tested—until she needed the extra edge."

"And now she's dictating the whole match," Cynthia added proudly.

Down on the field, the tide had turned completely. Dawn's voice was clear, calm, and confident.

"Let's finish this with Ice Beam!"

Mega Lopunny charged another attack, this one brighter, sharper than the rest. She leapt high, twisting mid-air, and fired the Ice Beam from above. It cascaded in a spiral of frost, hitting Dragonite dead-on.

The explosion of ice knocked Dragonite off its feet. It didn't rise.

The referee's flag waved. "Dragonite is unable to battle! Lopunny wins! The victory goes to Dawn from Twinleaf Town!"

The crowd erupted in cheers. Cameras flashed. Screens lit up with replays.

Dawn exhaled deeply and ran to her partner, hugging Mega Lopunny tightly as her form shimmered back to normal.

From the stands, Ash pumped his fist. "Yes! That was awesome!"

Alain nodded quietly, a faint smile touching his lips.

Cilan turned to Ash. "She combined Contest precision with battle ferocity. Remarkable."

Across the field, Iris knelt beside her Dragonite, who looked away guiltily. She touched its side. "We'll figure it out… together."

In the Champion's skybox, the quiet hum of the crowd below barely reached their ears. As the screen dimmed and the battlefield began to reset, the six Champions lingered in their private suite, each digesting what they had just seen.

"That was… impressive," Cynthia said, her tone proud but thoughtful. She leaned forward in her seat, eyes still fixed on the field as Lopunny's Mega form replayed in her mind.

"Dawn handled that Dragonite like a pro," Diantha added, smoothing her skirt as she crossed her legs. "I was on edge there for a moment when Lopunny took a direct hit. But she never panicked."

"I thought she'd Mega Evolve earlier," Leon chimed in, arms folded behind his head. "But she waited. Baited out the strongest hits before showing her trump card. That's good instinct."

"It's also gutsy," Alder said with a chuckle. "Dragonite wasn't pulling any punches. Lopunny took some serious hits. I'm surprised she stayed standing before the evolution."

Steven, who had been unusually quiet during the match, finally broke his silence. "Dawn knew exactly what she was doing. Ice moves are the obvious choice, sure. But it was more than that. She observed Dragonite's behaviour—its aggression, its lack of coordination—and used it against it."

Cynthia glanced over at him. "You noticed it too?"

Steven nodded once. "Iris's Dragonite wasn't listening. It was acting on its own. Powerful, yes—but that kind of disconnection in a battle like this? It cost her."

Leon scratched the back of his head. "Still… I gotta say, Iris handled the loss pretty well. You could tell she was frustrated, but she didn't lash out. She's grown."

Alder nodded. "But that Dragonite is a challenge. She'll need to earn its respect, not just its strength."

"Losing like that might be what finally pushes her to connect with it," Cynthia said. "She's not one to give up, especially when something doesn't go her way."

Steven leaned on the railing slightly, watching the stage crews prepare for the next match. "And Dawn… she's really stepped into her own. Not just as a Coordinator, but as a trainer."

"She's strong," Cynthia said softly. "And getting stronger."

Down in the trainer lounge, Ash pumped a fist in the air. "Let's go, Dawn!"

Iris knelt beside Dragonite, brushing snow from his side. He turned away from her slightly, but didn't flinch from her hand.

"I'm sorry," Iris whispered. "I know we're not there yet, but I'm trying. I really am."

Dragonite gave a low rumble, not quite accepting, but not angry either.

Dawn approached slowly, and Iris stood up to meet her.

"You were amazing," Dawn said gently. "You both were."

Iris managed a small smile. "Thanks. You deserved the win."

They shook hands.

"I hope we can battle again someday," Dawn said.

"Yeah," Iris said. "And next time, maybe we'll be more ready."

As the two girls walked off the field, the screen above began flashing the updated bracket.

Next match: Ash vs. Alain.

From his seat, Ash stood up and cracked his knuckles. "Guess it's our turn."

Alain stood as well, adjusting his gloves. "Let's give them a battle they won't forget."

The camera lingered on Dawn one last time, the breeze catching her hair as she raised a hand to wave at the crowd—before cutting to black.

And with that, the stadium began to buzz again—one legendary clash down, and another about to begin.
