A/N: Happy Resurrection Sunday! Thought I'd post this one-shot just b/c. I'm up 80 one-shots now. I can't believe it. Also, I will post my first Prompt tomorrow! I've gotten two new prompts since starting this Loosen Your Corset series again. I SO appreciate it, but could use some more. To the Guest who left the prompt yesterday, I couldn't PM you to let you know I'll be doing it, but I will. It's already written actually, I wrote it after I saw it :) With that said, there are 10 other prompts in front of yours, so it will be a while before it's posted. In the meantime, you all keep them coming! Take care.
A PLANNED ACT OF REBELLION
Rated T
When the elevator dinged open, they all whirled towards the sound.
Seeing Chaff walk in, a drink in his hand, had everybody momentarily stunned. Haymitch, Effie, Cinna, and Portia all just stared.
It was Effie, unsurprisingly, who came to her senses first.
"Chaff," she whispered, stepping towards him. "You cannot be here. You cannot." It was against every rule imaginable, especially him of all people, coming to Twelve, with Haymitch.
Chaff walked passed Effie, ignoring her, his eyes on Haymitch.
"She's right," said a nearly panicking Haymitch. "You-"
"We're giving your girl the bread."
Effie stared. Haymitch stilled. Cinna and Portia both let out audible gasps.
Effie, again was the first to break the silence. "That is not allowed." From her voice it was clear she was stunned. "That is absolutely not allowed, Chaff."
"It's already done," snapped Chaff, and Haymitch cringed. He could see the turmoil in Chaff's eyes, knew emotions were high. There was all so much shit happening so fast it was hard to keep up, hard to play the role, hard to keep still.
"Chaff," Effie whispered, trying to be the voice of reason, "the trouble we could all get in."
"I don't care. I don't care." Haymitch knows Chaff isn't pissed at Effie, his best friend's just pissed, but his tone had Haymitch's back going up. But before Haymitch could say anything, Chaff continued. "Just let me do the right fucking thing. For once, can somebody do the right fucking thing?" When the glass hit the wall it exploded into tiny shards.
The silence was deafening.
A bit more calmly, Chaff said, "The bread was already on its way. It was meant for Rue, of course, but..."
But Rue was dead.
"Seeder and I already discussed it. It should go to Katniss. It should."
Haymitch and Chaff stared at each for a long while. "And Thresh?"
"He's good."
More stares, and secret code messages, and then a single nod from Haymitch. "It's appreciated."
"It's going to either be her or Thresh, Haymitch. If it can't be Thresh..."
"It'll be Katniss" finished Haymitch.
The time for waiting was over.
"What your girl did..." Chaff's voice trailed, and Haymitch could see it, briefly, the emotions in his best friend's dark brown eyes. To see someone from a different District, bury someone from a different District... "She's different, Haymitch. She has the spark."
They were used to losing, though Eleven's Tributes tended to go farther than Twelve's. But they were used to losing, those two, but this year... this year felt different. After much discussion the goal was to try to get Thresh or Katniss out the Arena. One of them was going to be their Mockingjay. Going in they weren't sure who, but now...
But Chaff wasn't quite done dropping bombshells just yet.
"Eleven's in uprising."
Haymitch jerked, his eyes locked with Chaff. "You sure?" It was a stupid question, but it was the only thing Haymitch could think to say. It was was all happening so fast, it was all happening so fucking fast.
"One hundred percent," nodded Chaff. "Peacekeepers have already been sent."
Effie inhaled, sharply, making Haymitch take a quick glance at her. Yet like everyone else, her eyes were on Chaff.
"It's starting. Whatever the fuck it is, it's starting." They all continued to stare at Chaff, as if waiting for him to say more.
Haymitch could feel his heart hammering.
Chaff turned to Effie. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you."
"I am sorry about Rue," Effie said softly, reaching out and touching his hand. Chaff stared at her, nodded, looked back once at Haymitch, and made his exit.
The rest of them stood there in silence for a few more moments.
"There has never been a District gift meant for one Tribute but then given to another," stated Cinna, clearly concerned.
"What will this mean for District Eleven?" Portia asked.
"Chaff must have felt the risk was worth it," said Effie with certainty. "He would have never jeopardized the mission otherwise. If District Eleven's already rebelling..."
Haymitch stared at Effie for a few moments. "Do me a favor, Princess... Go out and be you for a few hours, yah? I don't want you here when Katniss receives the bread. I need you to be genuinely surprised. Confused, even."
"I know my role, Haymitch." He nodded, tucking his hands into his pockets to keep from touching her.
Cinna and Portia were watching.
"Somebody clean up that mess Chaff made. I will be back."
And just like that, it was chin up, smile on, shoulders back.
A/N: Obviously not Hayffie centric but there were glimpses, if you squint one eye lol. IDK where this came from, but it's here. Also, I REALLY like pissed off Chaff. I always picture him as cool, calm, and collected, but Effie says in CF Chaff never could turn down a fight... the things that one line has opened up regarding future Chaff/Haymitch one-shots... Also, I wondered and can imagine how Rue's death affected him. Hope you all enjoyed it.
