AN: This one was a fun one to write. I included Carter because I like his character and how he bonded with Kara in the first season but then never saw him again. In this fic he's fourteen. He's reserved but when something excites him, like a puzzle, he talks circles. The relationship between Cat and Kara have been established, they have just been taking it slow and is secretive about it. Carter kinda knows about it, he definitely knows Kara's identity though. Cat knows Kara's secret too.
And yes there will be more Ink Master Kara.
Anyways enough blobbing* around:) ~Immortalshark
*Carter's POV*
Mom's been really busy these last few days, but it doesn't really bother me because I could hang out with Kara. So when school got let out early, I made my way to the office. When I got there, I could see she was in a meeting and in a mood. Kara and I are probably the only people who could tell when Mom is truly annoyed. I could tell she was very close to snapping and saw that a few of the workers out in the bullpen were watching.
"Carter." a voice said behind me.
"Hi Kara," I said as I turned to see her coming up behind me.
"Yeesh, your mother's not happy is she?" Kara said after one look in the office.
"No." I said.
"Alright people, back to work. Or take this time for lunch. Let's move." Kara said after grabbing their attention, then turned to me.
"Do you want to watch me stop that meeting or do you want to head to my office to start your homework?" Kara asked.
I was curious. I knew mom let Kara get away with some things that others couldn't. Such as interrupting meetings.
"I want to watch." I told her.
"Alright. You're in for a treat then it's been awhile since I've done this." Kara said with a smirk.
I followed right behind her as she literally ignored the closed door policy. I saw a look that I knew well, the face of one that will not take no for an answer.
The new assistant tried in vain to stop her but couldn't.
"Alright people, why don't you all take a break and come back later. I'm sure you would like to think about what you have been given. Now shoo, people need food." Kara said as she grabbed everyone's attention.
I was surprised they left with little complaints. I guess that some could sense the atmosphere and wanted to get the heck out of dodge.
*Cat's POV*
My meeting with the board was absolutely horrendous. When I looked up I saw the bullpen at half staff. I returned my attention to the people in my office, thankful for the reminder from Kara to take my Lexapro. The meeting was grinding on my nerves when a voice, my new assistant, broke in.
"I'm sorry, but you can't go in there." they said as they tried in vain to stop whoever was barging in. I looked up to yell at the person but it was Kara, and Carter who was a step behind Kara.
"Alright people, why don't you all take a break and come back later. I'm sure you would like to think about what you have been given. Now shoo, people need food." she said.
Surprisingly, everyone left. Once they left, Kara had a smug look as she turned to me and Carter was looking on in awe and amusement.
"Ms. Grant, I'm sorry for interrupting your meeting." she said with a smirk.
"No, it was a good interruption." I said with a sigh and fought the urge to smile.
Kara turned to Carter, "Alright, head on to my office and get started alright? I restocked and have a new puzzle waiting for you when you finish your homework. You'll solve the previous puzzle to get to the new one." she said.
"Okay." Carter said and headed off.
Kara went right for the mini bar and looked at my collection. I watched as she took two of them, one a McAllen 18 and the other something else. She blended them and created an ice ball with her freeze breath. She then poured the mix over the ball and it changed. It was a dark brown when it hit the ice, but when it layed in the glass it was an amber color. She also grabbed a second glass and filled it with water. She came over with two advil on a dish.
"Figured you'd want this." Kara said.
I took them and chased them with the water. Then I looked at the mix.
"So what is this?" I asked.
"A little something I learned over vacation." Kara said with a smirk, "Plus, I knew you knew."
I smirked and took a sip of the concoction. It was amazing, it was a very nice blend, it had the smoothness of the McAllen, and a smoking aftertaste. I smiled.
"My god, where did you learn this? This is amazing." I said as I took another.
Kara smiled, "Perks of having an Amazonian friend and knowing someone who makes drinks themselves."
I looked at her, "I know I should have my assistant get my lunch, but only you knew what it meant when I said a salad with extra dressing."
Kara chuckled, "I'll get it. I'm finished anyway."
I waved her off and she left. I was in a good mood after that, but of course, of course it just had to tank. My ex, Henry, came barging into my office. He ranted about how I was never going to win in the court, how I barely see my boy, how I don't take care of him, how I'm not home often, how I'm neglecting Carter. When he was done yelling, he left. I watched as he passed Kara. He stops and says something to her. She responds and Henry leaves. My emotions, the ones that have been all over the place today, skyrocket as I realize that Carter was behind Kara.
I wanted to go comfort him, but Kara seemed to know what she was doing, so I watched. Kara talked him down and he had hugged her. That was the tipping point and I knew I would have to give Kara a raise. He didn't let go so Kara simply put him on her back and head over. Kara placed the bag of food on my desk.
"Could you run down to get the new layouts? They were supposed to be up here a half an hour ago." I asked out of habit.
"Of course Ms. Grant." Kara said.
She went to place Carter down, but he gripped tighter. She shrugged and took him with her. Then she was back with the layouts with it already marked and with notes.
"The layouts. Hope you don't mind me taking a look before you got it." Kara said.
"No, I don't mind. Do you mind working in here?" I asked.
"Sure." Kara said.
She went and grabbed a laptop. Carter was laying next to her with a ball in his hands, he was fiddling with it.
"Keira, get me a smoothie please." I said again out of habit. It just felt right with Kara at the helm of my day.
"Yes Ms. Grant." she said and went to get one.
She came back with one and it was a tropical smoothie. I fell back into old times and Kara was running around. After about the third time I asked her to do something, she chuckled.
"You know you have your assistant right?" she said.
I realized she had been acting as my assistant, "Ooops, it's just easier with you at the helm." I said with a shrug.
Kara smiled and went to go get the thing I asked for. She also brought a surprise, a bag. I rummaged around in it realizing there are sweets.
"You had that sweet tooth look. Plus, it's time to head home." Kara said.
I looked at the time, midnight. "Oh." I said.
I stood up but the room was spinning. I would have fallen over if Kara didn't grab me. Carter was on her back and she quickly gathered both mine and her stuff. She took both of us to the car.
"Hey Ted." Kara said.
"Hi Kara. Ms. Grant. Mini Grant." Ted said.
She helped us into the car and she sat up front. Once at the penthouse, Kara picked up Carter and myself as I knew I wasn't making it.
"Ted, would you mind helping and taking their belongings up?" Kara asked.
"Of course." Ted said.
He grabbed our things and followed us up. He placed our things by the door.
"Thanks Ted. That will be all." Kara said.
"Do you need a ride home tonight Kara?" he asked.
"No thanks, I'll walk. It's not far from here." Kara said.
"Alright, good night." he said and left.
Kara helped Carter and put him to bed, then she helped me. Today was a Friday, and it was a weekend that Carter was supposed to be going to his father's this weekend. Kara took him to school and then he came here to wait. I got a call from Henry saying that he was busy and couldn't take Carter. I ignored his protests and ended the call. Now I have to break the news to my boy, who was sitting on the couch waiting and ready to go. I walked over and sat next to him.
He sighed, "He's not coming is he?" he said.
"No. I'm sorry Carter, he's tied up with work." I said and pulled him in.
He pulled away, "Let's just go home." he said.
Then he looked at the door and his entire demeanor changed. He smiled.
"Kara!" he said and ran to her.
Kara knelt down, "He didn't come did he?" she said.
"No." Carter said.
"Well, would you like to stay with me? I've got my sister and her girlfriend coming tonight and I'm sure they'd love to have you. If it's alright with your mother of course." Kara said and looked at me at that last bit.
Carter smiled as he gasped and looked at me, "Please mom. Can I? Can I go with her?" he said with a happiness I haven't seen in a few years.
I sighed in amusement, he was really excited at that prospect, "Sure." I said.
"Yes! Thank you mom." Carter said and he hugged me.
Then he started pulling on Kara, excited. Kara chuckled.
"I got to get my stuff alright. Come along." Kara said.
Carter smiled and followed. Kara's so good with him. He's coming out of his shy shell whenever he hangs out with her and it's nice to see. Almost as if she's an older sister. Hmm...that's an interesting thought. I'll have to bring it up with her sometime.
*Carter's POV*
I headed with Kara. We got ice cream, played in the park, then we headed for her apartment. I looked around and it was a nice apartment. I saw a picture hanging in her loft.
"Hey Kara, who's this picture of?" I asked.
Kara smiled, "It's a painting of my aunt." she said.
I was shocked, "That's a painting?!" I said.
She laughed, "Yes. I have another if you'd like to see it."
I nodded and she pulled out a painting of a mystical looking scene. It was a canyon with a blue and purple hued sky and stars and a rainbow.
"Whoa. This is amazing." I said.
"If there's one thing that you'd want drawn, what would it be?" Kara asked as she knelt to my height and looked me in the eye.
"Hmm," I hummed in thought, "Supergirl's crest with a surprise background." I said.
Kara laughed, "Alright. Wanna watch?"
I nodded and watched as she grabbed a five by five canvas, tape, and art supplies like paint and brushes. I watched as she taped the canvas and drew an outline of the Supergirl symbol in the middle. She blobbed blue, purple and pink on the canvas. Then she used a brush to spread the colors. Then she used a teal color in between the blue and pink making a very cool background. She used white in between the pink and purple and a slight bit of black. Once it was dried enough, she used a thin brush to outline the symbol in a bright neon red and silver to fill it. Then she used black to outline a shadow of Supergirl behind it with trees and a red star in the background lighting up the silhouette. Then she signed it in white at the bottom. She pulled the rest of the tape away leaving a very pretty picture.
"Here. This is yours." she said.
I took it and smiled. I then met Alex and Maggie, who were great. We all chatted about different things, played games, Kara was really good at Settlers of Catan, she taught me how to play chess, and surprisingly good at Monopoly.
"Alright buddy, time to get ready for bed." Kara said once her sister and Maggie left.
I got ready and Kara gave me her bed. I wasn't too sure about it and Kara didn't mind sleeping in the bed with me. I had a nightmare that night and ended up hugging Kara. I fell asleep in her arms and it was nice, it was nice to have someone who cared enough to not care that they were practically comforting a fourteen year old. We went to the observatory, the zoo, the movies, and played more board games and puzzles. It was the best stay ever!
*Cat's POV*
On the Monday that Carter was coming back, he bounded into my office with the biggest grin on his face in a while.
"Mom, mom. It was amazing! We got ice cream, played in the park, introduced me to her awesome sister and her girlfriend, and played games. Kara might be able to beat you in Settlers of Catan and Chess. She taught me how to play and it was fun. She also showed me a few more puzzles and a couple of her paintings. Her paintings look so real that you'd think they're photos! She was happy to paint one for me. We went to the observatory, the movies, the zoo and talked about my math and science." he rambled.
I laughed at his enthusiasm, "Carter, slow down sweetie. You had a wonderful time and that's all I need to know." I said.
Carter smiled, "Can she watch me next time dad doesn't pick me up?" he said.
"If she's available." I said.
"Okay." Carter said.
Kara came in with a smile and took him to school. When she returned, she came straight to my office.
"Thank you Kara. What you did meant a lot to him." I said.
Kara smiled, "I would do it again Ms. Grant. I love spending time with him." she headed towards the door, then stopped and turned around, "Oh, and I recorded his call. And wrote what he said, got it all on the security camera."
She walked out. I smiled, then realized I had a hot latte in front of me. Today was a good day until Henry came barging in, again. He started calling me out and all that good stuff. He also told me who was residing over the court case, a Jude Simmons is the judge. He then left so confident and smug that he was going to win.
I called Kara into the office without thinking and she came. She also came with a bottle of water and a couple advil. I told her what was happening, told her about the court case and how he's trying to take Carter away. I told her when the hearing was, January 12 of next year.
"Ms. Grant. He's not going to win." Kara said.
"How? He's going to bring up Adam. I know he is." I said.
Kara held up a finger and headed to my assistant. She said something and my assistant nodded, and began typing away and making calls. She then picked up my things.
"Let's go Ms. Grant. I've got something planned." Kara said.
I was about to protest but Kara had already made her way to my elevator with my things. I went with her and stepped into the elevator. I watched as Kara addressed the people in a way that isn't normally associated with this version of Kara, normally the way she addressed the people was in a Supergirl voice; confident and clear.
"Alright people, just because Ms. Grant's not going to be here as late as she does, doesn't mean you can slack off. Run everything you're supposed to do. You are all smart enough to know what she does and doesn't expect. Back to work." Kara said.
Then on the way down, Kara made a call to someone, asking them to meet her at a cafe. We got there and I saw Lucy Lane sitting there and a new person.
"Ah, Baby Lane. I assume you're the one Kara called." I said.
Lucy smiled, "Yes. And I want you to meet my fiance, Susan Vasquez." she said.
"Hello." I said.
"Hello Ms. Grant." she said and we shook hands.
We sat and I explained my case to Lucy while Kara was talking with Susan. They were both on the outside of the booth with Lucy and I at the window. Then a young man with a military-esk haircut walked by. I didn't think anything of it, but I felt Kara stiffen.
"Susan, I expect you can handle them?" Kara said.
"Yes ma'am." Susan said.
"Alright. I've got something to do. Lucy, will you fill me in later? I know most of it, but keep me updated. I've got the evidence when you need it." Kara said and left.
"So Grant. What's with you and Kara?" Lucy asked with a knowing smirk on her face.
"Nothing." I said, "She's just helping out, that's all."
"Right, and this whole thing is her helping." Lucy said in a tone.
"Yes." I said.
"You know, Kara only called me because she can't take on the case herself." Lucy said with a raised eyebrow.
"She wants the case? I thought she only had a degree in psychology and English." I said.
Lucy smiled, "She does, but she also has a history. How much do you know of her childhood? Before she became a Danvers?" she asked.
"Not much, only what she was willing to tell me. Though she did say her father was a scientist and her mother a judge." I said.
Lucy sighed, "You know don't you?"
I nodded.
"Was it her disguise?" she asked.
"No, voice recognition and her features. Both have the same eye color." I said.
"Huh, never thought of that. Okay, Kara's mom was the head judge, and she learned how to navigate a courtroom from her. Got her math and science smarts from her father, who was one of the Head Scientists, her fighting techniques and strategies from her aunt who was a general in their military. And learned her way around a computer from a childhood friend of hers." Lucy said.
"Smarts?" I asked.
"Yes. All I know though is that if Kara stayed, she would have become the youngest member of the Science Guild. You'll have to get her to tell you the rest." Lucy said.
So over the course of the month of December, I wrote my counterclaim and why I think Henry is not the best for Carter. Carter and I headed for the courtroom. I saw Kara there with her sister next to her.
"This court is now in session." Judge Simmons said.
Henry's lawyer spoke up and stated his case, then Lucy went. Then the witnesses.
"I call Carter Grant to the stand." Judge Simmons said.
Carter went up and sat.
"Do you swear to tell the truth and only the truth?" Simmons said.
"Yes." Carter replied.
Henry's lawyer started asking questions.
"Do you see your mother as a caring type?" he asked.
"Yes." Carter said.
"Why?" he asked.
"Because she takes time out of her day to keep me occupied. She takes time to help me with my problems." Carter stated.
Lucy then began her questioning and Carter was then allowed to step down.
"You may return to your seat Mr. Grant. I now call Kara Danvers to the stand." the judge said.
I turned to see Kara dressed in a pantsuit. Black slacks, combat boots, a blue top with a silver belt. She had on a black tuxedo type coat and her hair was down and her right eye color was a lighter shade of blue than her left.
"Ms. Danvers." the judge started.
"Dr. Danvers please." Kara said politely.
"Of course. Apologies. Do you swear to tell the truth and only the truth?" the judge said.
"Yes." Kara said.
"How did you meet Cat Grant?" Henry's lawyer asked.
"I had made an interview to be Cat Grant's assistant at CatCo Worldwide Magazine. It was ten fifteen on the dot. I walked into her office. She had made a slow turn while saying, "my ten fifteen. Tell me why. Why are you so special.' Well, the interview went well and I became her assistant. I scheduled her meetings, set up her calendar, scheduled everything. Got her now a Grant Special at Noonan's, lunch, stayed until she left herself, for two and nearly three years. I currently hold the title of Cat Grant's longest Assistant as the record was only three weeks. After some consideration and mentoring, she promoted me to junior reporter under Snapper Carr." Kara said.
"How did you meet Carter Grant?" Henry's lawyer asked.
"Cat had just called her mother to see if she would babysit Carter because his father couldn't be bothered to visit. The usual babysitter was sick and so I told her that I would watch him. He was quiet at first, but I found that he really liked math and science, not really the interests of someone his age. It left him prone to bullying, and being the son of the Queen of all Media didn't really help much. He opened up to me and we got along well." Kara replied.
"How do you feel about Cat Grant?" the lawyer asked.
"Objection Irrelevant to the subject at hand." Lucy said.
"Objection abstained, next question." the judge said.
"How does Cat Grant treat her employers?" the lawyer asked.
Lucy went to object, but Kara minutely shook her head.
"Cat Grant treats all her employees the same. She is not a person who is going to suck up to someone, just because his or her work is subpar. She doesn't hire for subpar. She corrects them once and if they can't handle the corrections, they are fired. She tells the truth and if someone doesn't like it, then they could go find somewhere else. I should know because I was 'fired' multiple times, but it never stuck. Instead of snivelling because the Cat Grant couldn't handle just a little mistake a human made, I took it and used it to be better. I learned the one thing none of the other assistants did. Her moods. If she asked for a salad with extra dressing, she really means a cheeseburger. Specifically a Big Belly Burger Supreme with fries and a Dr. Pepper. If she was meeting her mother, schedule an appointment with her therapist. If Carter was to be with his father over the weekend, be prepared to stay for much longer. If it's the second Tuesday of every month, be in super early as she will already be in the office. Cat Grant may look intimidating, but she does care. She doesn't care for people who think they're all that and a bag of chips and can't take the truth." Kara said.
I was mildly shocked that Kara had picked up on those things, but I knew she was smart. My seemingly plain and normal former assistant was the most extraordinary person I have ever met, someone who is quickly becoming another child in my eyes.
"Why do you think Cat Grant is worthy to keep Carter when it is obvious his father is the better option?" the lawyer asked.
Kara ignored him and turned to the judge, "Excuse me ma'am. If I may, I brought proof that Carter's father, Henry Ralph Birmingham, is unfit to have full custody of Carter Keenan Grant. I have three calendars, each of them sealed and stamped by the Head of the Security department as well as the Chief of Police on the first of every year. I have not edited or tampered with the information within. As an assistant to the Queen of all Media, I watched on the first day that Carter was supposed to go with his father. I marked in the calendar when he was supposed to be picked up, but then his father couldn't bring himself to get his son. I felt that it was important, so that when something like today, happened there would be proof."
"Do you have to stand to get them Dr. Danvers?" the judge asked, surprisingly kind.
"Yes Your Honor. They are in my purse, which my sister Alexandra Danvers is currently in possession of as she has accompanied me today." Kara replied, very polite.
"Alex Danvers, please give ' purse to her." the judge said.
"Objection. Your Honor. I don't see why this is relevant. My client has stated that he is best suited to have custody of Carter Grant. He has stated that he is always home and will have plenty of time to spend with his son." the lawyer said.
"Denied. This is relevant." the judge said and Alex brought Kara's purse to her.
"But the purse may have been tampered. How do we trust that this, Alex Danvers or Kara Danvers is telling the truth?" the lawyer asked.
"Kara Danvers has sworn herself into the witness stand." the judge said. I could see a flash of irritation in her eyes.
"Your Honor, permission to approach the witness stand." Alex said, standing between the two front seats and in front of the judge.
"Granted." the judge said, subtly surprised by the formality.
Alex put Kara's purse down on the stand and went back to her seat. Kara then pulled out the calendars.
"Your Honor, as I said. The calendars." Kara said as she had taken a bow as she held out the calendars.
The judge, Judge Simmons, took them and looked them over. She then opened the floor to questions and rebuttals. Henry's lawyer had commented on something that Lucy wasn't sure about.
"Your Honor, pardon the interruption. May I rebut that comment, as I have borne witness to this man's cruelty and lack of care for his son." Kara said, standing up.
"You may, but keep it respectful Dr. Danvers." the judge replied.
I watched as Kara completely roasted the lawyer.
"Henry, you say Carter would be a better man under you. Why?" Kara asked.
"Because he will. He won't become a man if he learns under a vindictive woman who doesn't know when she's lost. I'm home more than she is and capable of providing for him." Henry said
Kara just smirked as if she hit the jackpot, "Then why haven't you come to get Carter when you're supposed to? You say that you need to teach Carter how to be a man, but how can you when you left because you couldn't stand the fact that you had a son with some special needs? You say you can teach Carter to be a man, but Carter is turning out to be a better man who knows how to treat a woman right. He's growing into the kind of man a woman would want because he knows the pain of waiting for his father, but he never shows. He knows that pain and won't let it affect his future, if any, kids. All you've taught Carter, was that having an affair with someone far younger than you, then breaking it off for another is okay. Marrying just to keep someone to run back to when stuff goes wrong and you need her is okay. Being scared of committing to a family is okay. Tossing aside all dislikes is okay."
"That isn't true. I'm able to be committed to something." Henry said.
Kara scoffed, "Sure you are. Now that Carter's coming of age, you want to be a part of his life, show him what a true man is. Show him the ways of the male species, that all women are their playthings and don't have two brain cells to think any better. No, Cat has taught Carter how to be a man who is passionate. A man who isn't afraid of commitment. A man who knows what he wants in a woman. A man who will speak his mind when something goes wrong or doesn't like. A man who doesn't toss aside or throw a fit when something doesn't go the way he planned it to. Cat has taught him how to be a better man than you and you don't like it because she's a woman. You didn't like it when you learned Carter was slightly autistic. You didn't like the fact that he used sign language when he got too stressed to put his vocal chords to use. Now, when he's more confident and making decisions and not the way you want him too, now you want to play a part in his upbringing. Now, not way back in his formative years that he needed a father to be proud of his first steps, a father who's proud of his son for doing the best he could. Now, because Carter's suddenly turning out differently than you planned you decide hey now I want him because he attracts the ladies if they see I can take care of a kid." Kara continued.
"He's busy with keeping his position at work. He's a very successful business man that can't afford distractions." Henry's lawyer said.
A snort came from Alex and Carter tensed next to me. I looked to see he had tears in his eyes.
"Really? Then why in his claim to court did it say he was at home more than Cat? Cause all I hear is that Henry is at work more than Cat is. Or if he really is busy with keeping a position at work, then why does he ditch work to go play hookie with his latest chick flick that's at least fifteen years younger than him? If he's successful, then why haven't I heard of his name? A successful business man that no one knows the name of because he is working as an informative at a desk." Kara shot back.
I looked at the judge and her eyes held shock and awe. Carter was smiling and glowing.
"I'm sorry Mr. Birmingham, your proposal of full custody of Carter Keenan Grant has been denied and Catherine Jane Grant will have full custody of her son." Judge Simmons said and in the process of bringing the gavel down.
"What?! That son of a ***** has no proof! She's a vicious ***** that will do anything to get what she wants. She's given up one son before. Why is this any different?" Henry yelled.
"This case is final Mr. Birmingham. Catherine Jane Grant will now have full custody of Carter Keenan Grant and Henry Ralph Birmingham's visiting and custodial rights have been revoked." she said and the gavel sounded making it final.
Carter bolted straight for Kara and tackled her in a hug. I followed and gave her a massive hug as well, not caring that I was in a public setting.
"See, I told you Kara would be a great lawyer." Lucy said.
"Yeah. That was awesome! His lawyer and himself walked right into Kara's trap!" Carter gushed.
"Trap? What trap?" I asked as I pulled away.
Kara was smiling softly.
Carter's jaw dropped, "Mom, Kara basically unraveled dad's whole case. She tore it apart and asked questions that led dad to saying something completely different from what he proposed. And she also revealed his true standings as well."
"Is that true Mr. Grant?" a voice asked.
We turned to see the judge standing there with a look on her face.
"Yes Ms. Simmons. Kara has been there for me every single time my father has ditched me. I found that it was easier to deal with the disappointment because Kara was there and kept me busy. I am very aware of my mother's workload, but on the nights that my father couldn't bring himself to come, she would clear the rest of her schedule and spend the weekend with me. I would never get bored because I was either with my mom or doing my homework in Kara's office at Catco. I basically have a little corner in Kara's office because I visit her so much. I know I have issues to work through, but I can deal with them with Kara there and my mother. My mom tries to understand me and I love her for it. Kara understands what I'm going through because she had gone through it herself." Carter said.
The judge smiled, "Don't I know it."
Kara squinted at the lady as did Alex. Their expressions were the exact same that I couldn't help but laugh.
"Wait a minute, you're Jude Miria Simmons!" Kara and Alex said at the same time.
Kara grinned, "It's so good to see you again. I was wondering where you went when I heard of the new judge in Midvale." Kara said.
"Hi Ms. Simmons." Alex said, waving slightly.
"You two know her?" Carter asked.
"Of course we know her. She's the one who sentenced Sheriff Collins to jail for murder and the usage of illegal drugs while in uniform. She is the one who handled Kara's adoption and our father's death. She's the one who dealt with someone trying to sue us, but we always won because of the situation. She practically became Kara's aunt." Alex said.
"Is that why you were so surprised at Kara's trap?" Carter asked.
Jude nodded, "I knew she was a smart girl, just didn't expect her to literally frog march that case to her side and effectively destroy the other."
"Cat, I told you he wasn't going to win." Kara said.
"Yes, yes you did." I said and kissed her on her cheek.
Then Henry came out of the room where he had to sign the papers. His face morphed into one of anger and disgust. He then charged Kara in a fit of rage.
"You son of a *****. You took my son from me! YOU HAVE NO RIGHT! You have no grounds to take him from me. He is MINE not yours. MINE to do what I wish with!" he yelled as he tried to punch Kara.
But that didn't happen. What was surprising is that Carter, who had been quiet this entire time, grabbed his father's fist and used his momentum to shove him to the ground.
"I'm not your property. I'm not an object for you to throw around anymore. Kara is one of the best people to have ever walked into my life. She's my older sister now and she takes care of me. You don't do **** except **** all the pretty ******* you see. I'm not going to be the man you want me to be because I'm going to be better than you, and I'm going to do it without your pea brain involved anywhere near me again." Carter sneered.
I was shocked. My sweet baby boy was holding that? Then he ran over to me and clung.
"I love you mom." he said.
I hugged him back. I watched Kara as she bodily hauled Henry to his feet. A pair of handcuffs on him as she shoved him out of the courtroom. Outside was one Maggie Sawyer in uniform who took Henry. Kara then came back over to Carter and Carter hugged her.
"Thank you Kara." he said.
Kara picked up on something that I couldn't and picked him up. He didn't say anything, but he did have a big smile on his face that only got bigger after Kara whispered something in his ear.
"Really?!" he shouted.
Kara nodded. He got down and was practically bouncing in excitement. Kara had a fond smile as she turned to Alex and told her something. Alex just nodded and Kara hugged her sister before grabbing Carter and taking him somewhere. Alex came over to me.
"Cat, I'm sure you're wondering what just happened. Kara had this all down pact. Lucy was just the legal lawyer we needed. While we were in court, Kara's people had raided Henry's place and found evidence of things no kid should ever know about. She also found evidence that all of Henry's 'girlfriends' were underage. Henry's going to jail on pedophilia charges and now has assault charges on his name due to him trying to attack Carter. What Kara is doing with Carter is showing him something not many people she willingly shares. Something that I've seen and she's allowed me to see but all of my workplace has seen it, just not the inside." Alex said.
"What is it she's showing him?" I asked.
Alex smiled, "Her spaceship."
Ah, that makes much more sense. No wonder Carter was so excited.
"Hey, Alex." I said.
"Hmm?"
"What would you think if I asked Kara to legally be my daughter? She would obviously still have you and Eliza but…"
I was cut off by a hug from Alex.
"She would love that. She already sees Carter as a little brother." she said.
I smiled and went to get the papers. That night after Kara put Carter to bed, I pulled her into the living room.
"Cat? What is it?" she asked quietly.
I wanted to get it over with so I just blurted it out, "I would like to adopt you."
Kara's face was one of surprise that morphed into one of fondness, "Of course. I'm assuming I'm still a Danvers too."
I nodded, relieved that she was happy about it. Kara pulled me into a hug.
"Thank you...ma." she said.
I was so happy that I have another child. Albite a different way but a child nonetheless and one that Carter absolutely adores. I didn't see Kara for a little bit and went to check on Carter, only to find Kara wrapped around him protectively. I smiled at the love Carter had for Kara, turned around, and shut the door.
AN: Anyone see the unexpected connection the judge had with the Danvers sisters? Yes I'm aware that in real life a judge has to be impartial, but this is a fiction and the fact that none of the people involved actually knew that the judge was also involved in Little Kara and Alex's life.
