AN: The prompt for this one is a Kara that showed off her true smarts in math and science that somehow turned into Kara helping Kate. I thought that since Kate was able to get through to her sister that Kara could figure out what had happened. I haven't been able to watch Batwoman so I'm going off of what I've read from other fanfics. In a fanfic, though I can't remember which one, Kate had gotten through to her sister for a second, her actual sister, before Alice took over.
I thought, hey maybe she was controlled and this happened. Thank you to BoricusBookworm for the prompt/idea.
Alright then enough blabbing and on with the story. ~Immortalshark
*Maggie's POV*
I had been assigned a case out in Gotham. Why Gotham and not National City? My chief sent me to the GCPD to work with them. It was a case that apparently scared away all other detectives. Probably because of the cities reputation. I took it because why not, I liked the hard to crack cases. It was one of the reasons why I became a detective.
However, when I arrived on the scene, it was a mess. The only thing to go off of was the burnt husk of something. I knew it wasn't a human just on the shape of the husk. Now, I was good at recognizing aliens, but this was difficult. And so, I called in some backup.
*Alex's POV*
I was in my lab with Kara looking over samples of DNA from aliens. Kara was with me because she's seen most of the aliens and there were DNA strands that I had no clue what I was looking at but Kara knew. It was at times like these that I remembered that Kara was extremely smart. Hell she was doing high school math in first grade. I remember working into the night on a stupid problem in calculus and then waking up to find it perfectly done. My phone rang the distinctive ringtone for Maggie so I picked it up.
"Danvers." I said.
"Hey, I have a mysterious alien over here in Gotham. I have a good repertoire of aliens, but I got nothing." Maggie said.
"Sure." I said, knowing that she wanted me to take a look at it. "Be there in a bit."
And with that we hung up. I turned to Kara.
"Hey sis," I said.
She turned to me and had a smug glint in her eye, "You want my help?"
I just nodded and she smiled.
"Where are we headed?" she asked as I wrapped my arms around her.
"Gotham." I said, "Keep an ear out for Maggie."
"I will." Kara said as she wrapped her arms around my waist.
I forgot how much I loved flying with Kara. I was enjoying myself as we flew towards Gotham City. I actually fell asleep on the way. I woke up to Kara increasing her grip as we descended. When we landed, I headed over to Maggie, who was squating near a husk of something.
"So what do we have here?" I asked.
"I have no idea. From the witnesses, they described a figure in black with a weird looking weapon. When they fired it at this being here, they said that the weapon seemed to not do anything but the victim was writhing and screaming in pain, almost as if they were on fire." Maggie said.
I could almost feel when Kara tensed.
"Where are the witnesses?" Kara asked.
Maggie pointed and Kara disappeared. She was over by the witnesses and asking questions. After each question she grew paler. She headed over towards a spot in the sidewalk and faced where Maggie is. As she walked closer, I could see her tapping her finger against her leg.
She was on to something cause I knew that she tapped her finger whenever she was counting out something. When she stopped where Maggie was, she stopped tapping but her face was one of concentration. She backed up a little and then moved slightly to her right.
"Crap." Kara muttered.
*Kara's POV*
I was looking at something that shouldn't have even been here. I thought of something, Kate's sister, Beth, or moreso her captive, the Joker. I wouldn't put it past that crazy lunatic to accidentally stumble upon this weaponry. I turned back to the witnesses and I asked them to stand where they saw the figure and then the victim. Thank Rao that they were willing to do so, and so stood in the same exact places. I then realized what had happened.
"Crap." I muttered.
"Kara? What do you have?" Alex asked.
"Alex, you remember the Hellgrammite?" I said.
"Yes, why?" she asked.
"Well, lets just say someone figured out how to replicate a weapon that they could only use." I said.
I stood where the figure stood and looked towards the victim. In the back I saw something, something that made my mind up. It was a chip. Somehow the figure had gotten sloppy or the weapon backfired. I picked up the chip and held it. I turned it over to see the logo, a familiar logo that confirmed my previous thought. The Joker or more likely, Alice.
I pulled out a tablet that allowed me to access a lot of things. I had used one similar to it on Krypton just for simple work, but simple work on Krypton was way too advanced for Earth. I sat down and tried to recreate the scene.
"Alex," I said.
"Yes?"
"Can you clear this place out? Except for Maggie of course." I said.
Alex nodded and soon the place was cleared. I pressed the button that allowed me to see the scene. I could view what happened and it wasn't good. The figure I could see was Alice, but she didn't have that crazed look in her eye. She looked afraid. I saw something in the hood glint because light had hit it just right. After the situation happened, I could see a tear run down her face. The thing I saw was a chip, a chip that altered someone's thoughts and actions to the point someone can control them.
I growled low as I thought that Beth was somewhere in there. I called in a resource that I haven't contacted in a few weeks due to almost being discovered. I called in one of my Lieutenants. See, I had graduated early from school on Krypton and with near perfect marks. Astra had taught me strategies and moves fitting of a mother was the chief adjudicator so I knew the laws. Then my father was the head of the Science Guild. I was able to pick my Guild, I would have been the youngest to ever join any of the three guilds, the Science Guild, Military Guild, or the Legal Guild.
"Kara, what's going on?" Alex asked.
"Well," I began, then I told her what I thought, "Beth, who I assume is the figure who did this. But as I watch the scene back, I can spot technology that is technology from other planets. The person who created it accidentally recreated it."
I left out who the person was so that I could go find him. Or, more likely, hack the crap out of his systems and find out what the hell is going on. I flew Alex back to National City and Maggie had to stay for a couple more days. I went home with the excuse of having an article to write but instead I was going to go ahead and take out the Joker once and for all, or at least make it so that he can't harm Beth anymore.
Once I got into my apartment, the very one that Alex used when she was in college, but gave to me, and went to the kitchen. There was a reason why I don't cook, it's because one of the knobs on the cupboards, when turned by me, takes me to my lab. A lab that I stored my pod and other things from Krypton. My pod had all of my things from Krypton because I had managed to catch Aunt Astra's thinking of the planet being in danger. I had packed all the necessary items into the pod I was to be in. Thank god I did because it wasn't until I was brought into the DEO that I had found my pod again. My pod was built differently than Kal's, why? Because I was older than him and needed more knowledge to understand the culture I was going to land in. The pod had a hidden compartment and that's where I placed all my stuff.
When I got to my lab, which was really the growing crystal that was stored in my pod and was similar to Kal's Fortress, I sat at the computer and started hacking into the Joker's computers. The codes I used had nothing on the firewalls that the Joker had, and completely obliterated his computer. I found what I was looking for, the blueprints to that damned chip. How to build it and the sequence for it. I then found a notebook, one that kept track of the progress, a journal of sorts. In it was plans of how to create the perfect minion to do his bidding. I saw the notes that laid out the plans of kidnapping one of the Bats. The people who caused the most trouble for him and he thought why not turn one of their own. I saw the notes that laid out the situation that caused the car crash that Kate and Beth were in and as such, ripe pickings.
I saw the notes on what he was planning on doing and in the notes it said that the subject was being stubborn and resisting the chip. Up until he threatened Kate. Until then Beth held out. Once that happened, the Joker had full control. I looked at the frequency that the Joker was using, and found that it was simple, well simple to me at least. I easily calculated the frequency that would negate the frequency that the Joker was using and nullify the connection. Once that occurred, I could go in and remove the chip.
Fortunately, my lieutenant had found the spot that Alice, or Beth, was hiding. I grabbed the suit that I used for missions like this one. The full black with blue, signifying my rank to my troops, and a helmet. I flew quickly and silently to the place, and then stormed it. I put my frequency on, and found Beth on the floor. I quickly knocked her out and took her with me to my lab. The way my lab was built, I was able to block certain frequencies, so Beth was stable for now. I quickly found the chip and removed it before destroying it completely and rendering it useless.
I was waiting on her to wake up, watching from the shadows as she healed.
*Beth's POV*
All I remembered about Kate, my sister, was her trying to protect me that fateful day. It was that moment that stuck with me through my life. Through the torturing that I went through resisting the Joker's meddling. I tried to contact her, I tried once everyday, but nothing worked. It became less and less to the point of me just trying to survive. I knew something was wrong one day when I woke up. I knew something was different. He was leaving me alone.
I felt something in my brain hurt, I resisted and it went away, but he was angry. I resisted that feeling up until he told me that Kate wasn't looking for me anymore, that it had been years. I was numb when I found out, but I knew Kate. I knew that she would never give up. Unfortunately, I watched my body do things that I would never do. I couldn't do anything but watch as my own two hands killed people. I watched as my body tried to hurt my father. I watched as my body tried to hurt Batwoman, who I found out was Kate.
From my prison in my own head, I could see that Kate hadn't given up on me. I could see the relief that Kate felt at seeing me alive. I tried to fight back against the chip, but it didn't work. I watched as my body used a weapon that basically melted a person from the inside out. I felt the tear slip from my face as it happened, I never ever wanted this to happen. I remember going back to the hideout for a few hours before feeling a burning sensation from the chip. After that all I could see was blackness. Everything went black.
When I woke up, I don't know how long I was asleep, but it was somewhere unfamiliar. I started to panic.
"Easy, easy. You're safe." a gentle voice said.
I jerked to see a lady in a black and blue suit. She had blonde hair and blue eyes. I didn't know her. She reached out and I thought she was going to hurt me so I tried to move away.
"Easy, I'm not going to hurt you. My name's Kara. What's yours?" she asked.
"Beth." I said quietly before realizing that I used my birthname and I felt my eyes widen in shock.
"Shh, it's okay." Kara said.
I felt a hand on my back and I jerked away, not used to contact, or at least gentle contact.
"Beth, you are safe. He can't hurt you anymore. I took out the chip he was using to control you and destroyed it. You are no longer under his control." Kara said.
I was free? I...I didn't know what to do. I haven't been free to do what I wished since that accident.
Kara sat right in front of me, "Beth, you can have your life back. I found evidence in the Joker's files that he had planned that crash. He had planned the events leading to your capture."
I felt tears in my eyes at the gentle and kind look in Kara's beautiful blue eyes. I felt the gentle touch of Kara's hands and accepted the touch, the gentle touch that I hadn't had since that night. Finally I was free. I gripped onto Kara and cried. I blubbered out apologies for all the things that I did.
"That wasn't you. That was someone controlling you." Kara said as she held me in her arms.
For the first time in a long while, I felt safe in someone's arms. I felt the whole situation catch up to me and I fell asleep in her arms.
*Kara's POV*
As Beth fell asleep, I held her. Kate had continued to hope that her sister was in there somewhere. As Beth slept, I kept an eye on her. Over the next couple of weeks, Beth had finally warmed up to me and opened up about what she went through. How she had kept the hope that Kate would eventually come for her. She opened up about what that man put her through and how she had to watch as her body said and done things that she herself would never have said or done. I was right in that Beth had cried as she killed someone, as Beth told me that she was somewhat in control to cry as she watched someone be burned from the inside out.
The only way Beth would sleep peacefully was in my arms. That was okay since Lena was still trying to figure out how she felt about me. I would love to have my best friend back, but after everything that happened, we were going slow. She had told me that it would take a while to get back to the place we were at and that was fine. As long as we could see each other and talk was more than I could ever hope for.
Beth was surprisingly younger than I am by a year. After a month of being in my care, I brought up Kate.
"Hey Bethy," I said as I called her by my nickname for her.
"Hmm?" she hummed as she turned in my arms.
"What do you think of letting Kate know?" I asked.
She tensed a little but she was nervous, "I'd love to...but after everything that had happened, I don't know how she'll react."
"Let's try and see what happens. If you'd like me to, I can stay with you." I said.
She calmed down and nodded, "Okay. I want you to stay, sis."
I smiled at her and placed a kiss on her forehead. "Of course. I'm gonna call her okay?"
She nodded and she settled in what had become her favorite place.
"Kane." Kate said as she picked up.
"Hey, it's me Kara. I've got a little surprise for you. You available?" I asked.
"Yes. I don't have anything going on at the moment." Kate said.
"Perfect. I'll be there shortly." I said.
"I'll be waiting." Kate said.
I hung up and looked at Beth, "Alright. She's available now if you'd like to talk with her."
Beth nodded and soon we were off and headed to Gotham. Thankfully, Lucy Lane was covering for me at the DEO and Lena had CatCo covered. I flew with Beth over to where I could hear Kate's heartbeat. I had Beth hide for a second while I went to talk with Kate.
"Hey Kate." I said.
"Kara. What do you have for me?" she asked.
I smirked at her, "I found a project that the Joker was working on. Found out that he had planned on using a Bat for his experiment just to turn one against the rest. Unfortunately, that person was your sister."
Kate looked uncomfortable,"If that's all you came here for, then you can leave."
"Kate, I found her. I freed her. She's yours." I said as I waved at where Beth was hiding.
Beth waved shyly at Kate. I saw the absolute disbelief on Kate's face. It was hard to surprise her, but I knew I did. Kate took a step towards Beth before running at her. The two hugged and tears were falling from both of their eyes. Kate turned to me, while her grip on Beth didn't let up.
"Kara….how did you…" Kate stuttered.
"I come from an advanced planet Kate. Finding and helping your sister was light work." I said.
I found myself wrapped in a group hug. We took this to Kate's house and Beth talked. I had pulled out the stops earlier and had a friend on standby with a case. A friend that once he knew about it, took it happily and is now waiting on me to give him the a-okay.
"Kate, Beth. I have some good news for the both of you." I said.
Both turned to me.
"I called in a friend of mine, a lawyer that is a practitioner in Gotham and other places. He is willing to take your case to court and have your record cleared. Beth, if you agree, the Joker will be found and taken to a place where he can't hurt anyone anymore. The case holds all evidence that the Joker had everything planned from the start. The event that your mother was attending, the crime that took Bruce away, and the crash. In his twisted mind, that since Bruce had foiled his plans one to many times, he decided to turn a Bat against their own and what better way to do that then to take one closest to him." I said.
Both of their jaws dropped in disbelief.
"Are...are you serious Kara?" Kate asked.
I nodded and I found myself wrapped in another hug. So with that I called in my friend and within two hours, the case was brought to court, Beth's record was cleared, and the Joker was locked up in the Fortress where he couldn't do anything anymore except rot away in a windowless, escapeless, completely isolated with nothing around him for miles and a security system rigged to kill him if he tried to escape cell.
Kate was smiling more now that Beth was back at her side. I helped them out whenever Beth had a nightmare and eventually, Beth moved to National City. She stayed with me for a little before finding a place of her own. And by a place of her own I mean like a couple doors down from my apartment.
Best part about this whole thing is that Lena offered me to work part time for her, and helping her make products that would do well. Lena had somehow found my theories on quantum entanglement and now was looking at me to basically be an Assistant CEO. Lena's obviously the CEO, but I'm going to be right under her in the business, on par with Sam.
Lena and our friendship had grown back to the way it was and we were finally best friends again. It just sucked that I was still single.
AN: And that's a wrap. What did y'all think? It turned out more Kara/Kate centered than Kara's smarts centered but it's Kara's smarts that led to Kate getting her sister back. Of course more ideas are welcomed. Ink Master Kara is coming soon, so those of you who enjoy that don't worry. I'm still working on those.
