AN: Hey guys. Sorry for the late update. School's been keeping me busy with homework and stuff on top of sports. This one shot turned into a Superman and James bash. I took part of what I had from one of my other one shots to put in here since it started out with someone *cough*Alex not liking Kal. Anyway, this idea came from BoricuaBookworm. I just tweaked it so that both James and Clark are involved.
Anyway, enjoy:) ~Immortalshark
*Alex's POV*
At first, I had been starstruck by Superman. What? He was a superhero and he saved people. That changed when he brought a small girl, around the age of eleven or twelve, to my house. My mom and dad sat me down to tell me that we would be getting a new member of the family. I was ready to have a sibling, someone to hold and take care of. I did not know that Superman would be bringing her. He practically dumped her with my family and then left. I didn't like how she came to us, but I was glad she did, because now I don't know how I lived without her.
She was such a cute little thing. I remember looking out the window to catch a glimpse of our new family member. She had looked up in my direction. She was quiet at first, not really talking to anyone. Two days after Superman had left her here, I was walking out to the backyard when I saw my mom and dad down in the basement. I heard a whimper and made my way over to see what was going on. I found my mom and dad trying to coax Kara out of her hiding spot in the basement.
She had a broken look on her face as I assume that she realized that Superman wasn't coming back. I ran over quickly, but enough so that she knew I was coming. I started talking to her. Not pushing her to come out or anything, just talking and eventually Kara had come out and sat in my lap. It was at that moment that our bond began. The bond that I cherished so much. I knew she held in her anger at Superman for basically abandoning her with my family. She had buried it deep inside her and it came out when I was holding her close.
It wasn't until my mom had invited Clark to thanksgiving dinner that I realized that it was bad. Kara spent the day happy as can be that he was coming, but that happiness died away when mom told her that he wasn't coming and that he was busy. Three years later of missed birthdays and holidays, Kara stopped hoping that he would come. The day she realized that he would never come was the day she spent entirely in my lap and me promising her with everything I had, that I wouldn't leave her. I promised that I would always be there for her, not with words, but with actions, like how Kara did.
No matter what was going on, she was always there. At dumb science fairs, games, scrimmages, she was there with a big smile on her face as she cheered me on. I did the same when Kara got involved in sports. She started in the sports I did before moving on to different sports that she liked. She ran cross country, did cross fit, she did diving, MMA, parkour/freerunning by watching me play Assassins Creed. I kept up as much as I could, Kara made a great crash mat because if I missed, she would be there to catch me. She played basketball for the fun of it.
Boxing for her was an outlet. An outlet for her anger at Clark for abandoning her. Of course, we both threatened each other's love interests, me with bodily threats and her with threatening to throw them into the sun. At first, Kara had been afronted with me butting into her love life but realized that if they couldn't handle lil' ol' human me, then they couldn't handle her alieness and the baggage she carried with her.
We helped each other with homework. We stuck together through high school because after I found my 'friends' bullying Kara, my boyfriend at the time included, I dropped them. I ditched them even more after what happened with Kenny. They had made fun of it by saying that he should have been smart enough to avoid being killed.
We protected each other and grew up that way. After we went our separate ways in careers, Kara to the Academy, and me to normal college, we still kept in touch. She was thirty-two when she had retired from the Navy as a Rear Admiral Upper Half, or to make it easier an O8. I was out in National City for my work at the DEO and she came to join me in National City. We ended up buying a house that we could both stay in and share the expenses.
About three years later as Cat Grant's assistant, Kara came out as Supergirl by rescuing my plane...thank you Kara...and James came into the picture. Something was fishy about him. He wasn't here at all before Kara came out and saved my plane. One minute he was in Metropolis and the next here he was in National City. I brought it up with Kara one night at Sister's Night.
"Hey Kara." I said.
She hummed in acknowledgement.
"Don't you think it's weird that James is here? I mean, everyone knows he has connections to your cousin." I said.
Kara's back tensed, "I knew it was weird." here she relaxed, "however, I have more reach than him. I've got a certain Amazonian on speed dial and a certain bat too. A Lantern as well. Not to mention some connections that are confidential." she said with a smirk.
She looked down, "He's here because of my cousin. He told me that he was here for a new beginning but I could hear it in his heartbeat that he was lying. I could also tell because he fidgeted. He has a job as a photographer, not just any photographer though, the head of the department."
I hugged her and she snuggled into my side, the way she does whenever she feels upset. She calms down at my scent and heartbeat, it's actually why I haven't changed what I shower with or wash my clothes with. Over the next couple months, I watched as James tried to get Kara to trust him but she held him at arm's length.
*Winn's POV*
I was Kara's friend first. I know it's not something to brag about but it was annoying how after Kara came out as Supergirl, James showed up. Like he wasn't there at all for the two years before, and then suddenly here he is trying to 'protect' Kara. I was a little suspicious of him, not gonna lie. I had a crush on Kara, but I respected her boundaries after she told me that she didn't see me like that. Did it hurt? Yes. Am I gonna get mad at her for not being interested in me? No.
When Kara decided to bring both of us in on her escapades, I could see the distrust in James' eyes that I knew Kara's secret, as if I wasn't supposed to know. As if it was in his power for Kara to not tell people HE doesn't trust. I knew that James was here for a reason, a reason that seemed very fishy. It wasn't until Reactron showed up after the interview Kara did with Cat that James called in Superman to 'handle things'. I could tell that Kara threw the fight, why she did I have no idea. We were in her loft, waiting for her to wake up. She did of course and she turned to James.
"You...you called him?" she asked, I could hear the hurt in her voice.
James had this puppy dog pout that said that he didn't want to press it but he did anyway. "He gave me this in case of emergencies."
Kara leveled a glare at him, "You promised that you wouldn't call him. My fights should be just that. MINE. Not his."
James held a wounded look as if it hurt that Kara was mad at him for doing something he shouldn't have done in the first place. It got me mad cause Kara could handle herself.
"James. I think you should leave." I said.
James looked at me with shock in his eyes, "Why?"
Ooh the nerve. Kara stood up and she had a look in her eye. She wasn't looking at James; she was staring out at the city.
"James. Leave." Kara said in a firm 'i'm not gonna take no for an answer' tone.
James just put his hands up and left. Kara, being the ray of sunshine that she is, welcomed him back. I watched as she tried to make the relationship work but it was after the Red K incident that James got skittish. I could see that Kara was more closed off after that, as if she didn't want to hurt anybody else. I stayed with her of course, I understood that underneath Kara's sunny disposition is a darker, jaded, person. Someone who has seen too many people they grew close to just to be ripped away. Of course who wouldn't be after all, we don't know if Kara had seen her planet blow up. We don't know if Kara had seen the implosion with her own eyes. All that we know is that Kara would be changed after being sent to an unknown planet filled with unknown beings to take care of her baby cousin and when she arrived, she was shipped off to another family.
When Barry arrived, he clicked with Kara. Both were sunny, smart, and had similar interests. Of course he'd click with Sunny D. It was obvious that Barry liked Kara as a friend. He helped her get out of her funk, she had finally smiled genuinely again.
James however, got jealous. It was freaking annoying! Like really dude, you act all skittish around her cause you can't handle the bad days that Kara has, but as soon as someone else makes her smile and her sunny personality that hides the sadness, all of a sudden he's interested and protective. It was obvious that Barry liked someone else and Kara is practically a sister. Honestly, it was harder to not like Kara. Heck, even Cat Grant liked Kara even though she doesn't show it.
It wasn't until James got slotted for the CEO gig before leadership was handed to Lena Luthor, that James was 'threatening'. I stopped by CatCo every once in a while nowadays since I work for the DEO, but one of the times I stopped by, a meeting was going on and James was doing something and trying to work the meeting in a direction that obviously wasn't going to work. Kara, who put a stop to his blubbering, stepped up and took over the meeting with an ease that would normally be seen with her Supergirl persona. I saw it in James' eyes that he didn't like that. He didn't like that Kara took over the meeting like that, as if she directed it in a direction that HE didn't WANT it to go.
*Lena's POV*
I had plans to move Luthor Corp to National City and rename it to something. I did not go to the Venture Launch because I was busy. Thank god that I didn't because the Venture had exploded. I knew that my office would be flooded with reporters trying to get an exclusive on why I wasn't there. My beloved assistant Jess had fielded all of the reporters except for the one with a newspaper that I can't remember the name of. I was on my way to that interview when something blew the helicopter engines. The pilot was down but then the Supers appeared and saved me. Supergirl was the one who leveled out the helicopter and landed it with little problems. She checked the pilot before turning to me.
Her bright blue eyes were beautiful.
"Ms. Luthor," even her voice was beautiful, "someone's trying to kill you."
I wasn't even mad. I let the supers do what they needed to do and checked in with Jess. Also, I don't know why everyone keeps underestimating my knowledge. knew who Clark Kent is and his superhero persona. Why the hell wouldn't I? Lex ranted about how he absolutely despised Kryptonians and Superman the most and how his 'best friend' didn't tell him a secret that was kept for a reason. I knew Clark Kent is Superman.
Clark Kent came into my office asking why I wasn't aboard the Venture.
"There's a perfectly reasonable explanation for why I wasn't aboard the Venture yesterday." I said.
"Well, that's why we're here." Clark said.
"There was an emergency regarding the planning for a ceremony I'm holding tomorrow. I'm renaming my family's company and I had to cancel." I said.
"Ah, lucky." he said.
I chuckled, "Lucky is Supergirl saving the day." I said watching for his reaction.
"Not something one expects a Luthor to say." he said with barely hidden tone that indicated he didn't trust me. "And Superman was there too."
I noticed the lady standing next to him. She was wearing a pair of pants and a baby blue three quarter sleeve shirt with what looked like a very comfortable sweater on.
"And who are you?" I asked.
"I'm Kara Danvers. I'm not with the Daily Planet but I'm with Catco Magazine." she said.
I looked at her, "That's a publication not known for its hard-hitting journalism."
She smiled with a glint in her eye. Of course, I was teasing and it seemed that she picked up on it. I put two and two together and realized that the lady was the cousin. If Clark Kent is Superman, then this wonderful lady is Supergirl. I sat down.
"Can we just speed this interview along? Just ask me what you want to ask Mr. Kent." I said. "Did I have anything to do with the Venture explosion?"
"Did you?" he asked.
I heard the subtle threat and it was apparent that so did Kara. She stepped in between us and took the ropes. I saw it in Clark's face that he didn't like that. I smirked and answered Kara's questions. It was surprising that she wasn't a reporter. I handed her the drive and leaned in.
"Could have fooled me...non reporter." I said.
She smirked and handed me a little piece of paper. They left soon after and I looked down at the paper. It was a number next to a symbol. And so after that, Kara and I got closer and I found that I actually liked working with her. I let my walls come down around her and we were soon in a relationship. Alex and I were introduced and Alex had given me the benefit of the doubt. Then three months in and it was only Alex that knew about our relationship, of course, she had threatened me if I ever hurt Kara. That was a trip as Alex held me over a stairwell and threatened me.
After that little fiasco, she told me why she did it and how Kara wouldn't really care if she did. She told me that she does get a little unhinged when it comes to Kara's safety and it's the same with Kara. In fact, Maggie, Alex's love interest, had gotten the Kara seal of approval too. Maggie was threatened by Kara throwing her to the sun. Now that left James. I had bought CatCo out from under Edge and for Kara too.
James was not happy that he was not in charge anymore. Kara however was over the moon about it. But things came to a point when Clark came in. I had wanted to put Kara in charge of CatCo since I've seen her take over a staff meeting and actually get things done. I had called in a meeting with the rest of the staff and they wholeheartedly agreed to have Kara as the standing CEO, even Snapper. So Kara was getting a promotion to CEO and James was very unhappy about it.
Clark was brought in and Kara...Kara had verbally smacked both of them down. Winn was already watching so I joined him. Cat Grant had come a little later and just stood with us.
"Well, hello Lena, Winn." she said.
"Hi Cat." I said.
"Our girl has grown a backbone hasn't she." Cat said as she looked at Kara as she was still ranting to the two.
"Yeah, from what I hear from Alex, she's been keeping it in since she got here." I said.
Cat winced, "Can't say that he doesn't deserve it. Lois has told me how nice those thanksgiving diners were back then."
I saw Kara's face twitch. "Uh, Cat? I think she heard you."
Cat looked and Kara had a new fire to go off of. I winced when she switched to Kryptonian.
*Winn's POV*
I had been sent to CatCo to see what was holding Kara up for so long since Alex was off doing something else. I got there right when Superman had flown in and James had stood behind the super. I looked at Kara to see that her expression was cold.
"Kal." she said, she sounded scarily like Cat at the moment.
"Kara," he said.
Then it got into a heated debate.
"Kara, you can't take the job. Who knows if you could get outed." Clark said. "It's why James should remain at the helm."
Kara wasn't one that was easy to anger, but from the looks of it, she was barely holding it.
"Kal, you do not control me. You have NO control over what MY actions are. You're just jealous that I'm in a higher position than you are right now. All I see are two men who are too jaded by shit that's happened, that you can't look two feet pass your own noses. So what Lex almost killed you with Kryptonite. You're the Man of STEEL, man the hell up and push past your limits and gain some sort of immunity. Hell, I could throw a tiny ass piece of Kryptonite at you and you'd be down on the ground right now. And please, sending James to 'protect' me while you couldn't? I saw through that so fast." Kara said.
James squeaked, "How the hell did you find out?"
Kara glared at him, "You are as subtle as a bull in a china shop. What, all because I start being a hero, you want to 'protect' me from your 'enemies'? You want to have a role in 'shaping' me to be the hero I was 'born' to be? Nah, you don't have a role in squat for what I do. You gave that up the second you left me at the Danvers and didn't return when you PROMISED!" Kara growled.
Lena had come over at some point and so did Cat.
"Can't say he didn't deserve this. Lois has called me to tell me how sweet he was at thanksgiving diners back then. And anniversary dates too." Cat said.
I saw Kara's face change. Lena had winced.
"Uh Cat? I think she heard you." Lena said.
Kara's left eye slitted and she smiled sweetly, "Oh? Did I hear that right Kal? You had Thanksgiving dinner with Lois? What happened to being so busy with rescues that day? I don't remember seeing any rescues from Superman on those days. And don't even get me started on my friendship with Lena. Lois' father is involved up to his neck in Cadmus yet you look past that and are sucking face with her. But as soon as Lena starts having an interest in me it's oh shit my baby cousin is conversing with the enemy. Lois isn't her father now is she? You can say that about Lois but why not about Lena? Is it because Lex turned evil when he knew your 'secret'? Or is it because that whole family BUT lena is wacky? Lena is smart, smarter than Lex is and definitely smarter than you. She had you pinned from the start, hell, Lex had ranted so much that she overheard. Plus, the plan to go together to interview her? She knew that a reporter from the Daily Planet shouldn't have a connection with a lowly assistant from CatCo or know anyone from CatCo. She had me pinned right from the start and I could tell."
Clark growled at Kara, "Now that isn't fair Kara. Lois is…"
Kara turned away, "Yeah yeah. Lois isn't her father blah...blah...blah! You obviously had plenty of time to spend with her. It's not that hard to fly five minutes from Metropolis to boring ol' Midvale to visit family." Then she sneered, "Or, you conveniently forgot because dating and rescuing other people is so much more important than helping the last of your family to adjust. You thought, hey, she'd have a normal childhood growing up with the same people that helped me with my powers."
"Kara, that is enough. Clark was busy enough." James said.
Someone brushed past me and ran to Kara. It was Alex. Alex had come and placed her hand on Kara's chest. I just noticed that Kara's eyes had slitted, like a dragon's. Alex had tucked Kara's head into the crook of her neck, glaring at Clark and James.
"That is enough! Both of you are forbidden to ever step foot in this place again." Alex said.
"You have no power here." James said as he stood to challenge Alex.
A low growl came from someone. It was Kara. Kara growled low at James.
"Neither do you!" Kara said, but her voice was deeper.
James scoffed, "I'm the CEO."
Oh boy, Kara had just about attacked James, but Alex got in the way. Honestly, I think the only reason why Kara wasn't attacking was because Alex was in the way. It was Alex who was keeping Kara at bay by hugging her.
Then Cat butted in, "No you are not. You never had been. You were just a stand in while I traveled the country spending time with my boy. Lena took over and she is the CEO. It is her choice on who she wants at the helm. All I see is a male who deems everything his no matter what, anything that is in the way is considered inferior or an enemy. Plus, Kara has more connections than you do James. Your puny relation to Superman is nothing compared to those Kara knows."
Kara had gone back to normal, or at least most of her, her left eye is still slitted.
"Really? Who does she know that I don't? I'm older than her." James said.
Kara scoffed and began to tick them off on her fingers, "Perry White, Diana Prince, Arthur, Kate Kane, Oliver Queen, Ray Palmer, Bruce Wayne, the Flash, the head of the Green Lantern Corps, the head of the Ninth Lantern Corps," she smirked here, "Cat Grant, Lena Luthor, the current president." she smiled, "and more confidential connections. Ones that you do not have authorization to know nor will you ever have authorization to know since you don't have the clearance to know."
Clark paled…."Okay, okay. I give." he said before flying off.
James however was still huffy, "Oh? What's so top secret that I can't know?"
Kara smirked, "Something you have to be an O8 in the military to even know. Seeing as you aren't an O8, or military personnel then you do not have the authority to know."
"O8? What's that? Some low ranked POC that doesn't do anything." James sneered.
Cat looked impressed, "Now Keira, where was that in your resume?" she asked.
Kara's demeanor took a three sixty as she addressed Cat, "Well Ms. Grant. I believe you know that I did it to see if I could get a job off of an average resume. You may look at my true resume that I sent to you in your email."
Cat just smirked as she looked at her phone. Her eyebrows rose in surprise.
"What the hell? With these credentials, you could have run for a department head and gotten the job." Cat said.
Kara smirked as she turned to James, "and as for you, your resume doesn't hold a candle to mine. Plus I would think you'd know your ranks considering your father was in the military."
James huffed and left.
*Third Person POV*
And with that, James moved back to Metropolis. Lois found out what happened between Kara and Clark and had smacked some sense into him. Nowadays, the two are slowly working on their connections. Alex was smug because she called Kara out for liking Lena. Kara was smug because Maggie had finally gotten off her tail, manned up, and stayed with Alex. Kelly had come into the group and was basically the group therapist. Lex tried once to escape but never again for fear of being thrown into a pile of puppies. Who knew that Lex's weakness was pretty blonds and puppies.
AN: And that's a wrap. All you fans of Ink Master Kara, don't worry, more parts are coming. I just have to find the time to write them. Meanwhile, keep sending ideas.
I find myself enjoying reading Fairy Tail fictions and have a few ideas. Anyone up for one, it would be a more badass Lucy with Aquarius at her side?
