*Cat's POV*
When I hired Kara, I knew she was different. She was in a business casual, something that she could work in but also run in if need be. She was extraordinary and had lasted so much longer than any of my other assistants. Longer meaning she held the record after three days. A year in and she was practically my right hand. She had my schedule memorized and down pact. Any extra time I got to spend with my son Carter was made possible by her. She had also wormed her way into a trustworthy position, one where I let her meet Carter. I had my own judgements on Kara, but when I had Carter after his dad had forgotten and consequently broke his promise to Carter, was when Kara was named Kara in my contacts, not just assistant or Keira. I couldn't find a sitter at this close a time and so I texted Kara if she was able to watch him at work. She texted back that she could.
I brought Carter to work and explained to him that I was having my assistant watch him. He just nodded and returned to his phone. I sighed since it was his coping mechanism whenever his dad forgets. Carter and I got off the elevator and like clockwork, Kara was there with a steaming latte and surprisingly a juice bottle for Carter. I brought both into my office to introduce the two in a more private setting. Well, more private than the middle of the bullpen at least. Once in the office, Kara knelt to Carter's height and he looked at her.
"Hey buddy. I'm Kara, your mother's assistant." Kara said.
"I'm Carter. Nice to meet you." he said.
Kara smiled at him, "Now, if it's okay with your mother, how about we go do your homework? I'm great at math and science."
He just nodded and Kara led him to her desk. I saw him pull out his homework and started complaining about how math was boring because his teacher was boring. Obviously Kara was telling the truth because I watched as Carter's face lit up in excitement. By noon, Carter was done with all his homework. I was editing an article when I heard a noise that I haven't heard in a long time. I looked up to see Carter red faced with laughter. I smiled because it wasn't his polite laugh, it was his full on boyish laugh. Kara was next to him with a wide grin as she said something else that had Carter rolling.
"Kara." I said.
And she was there, Carter was right behind her.
"Yes Ms. Grant." she said with a little hesitancy.
"Come with us for lunch will you? Carter seems to like you and it is time for lunch." I said.
"Sure Ms. Grant. Come along Carter." she said.
He followed her as she grabbed her stuff. Then he surprised me even more and convinced me to give Kara a raise because Carter had asked Kara if he could ride piggy back style. Kara agreed and picked him up with ease.
"Comfy?" she said.
"Mhm." he said.
So we went to lunch at a small hole in the wall restaurant. One that I had Kara add to my list of places to order lunch from because their food was just divine. Not too sweet, not too salty, just the right flavors.
"Kara, who am I?" Carter said, then he did an impression of me.
"Your mother." Kara said with a grin, "Now, who am I?"
They played that game for the rest of lunch, and it was quite amusing.
"You're a very good impressionist. What else do you like?" Kara asked.
Carter looked down at his feet. I was about to say something to Kara when Carter beat me. It was obvious that they forgot I was with them.
"Well, I really like math and science. I'm good with english since I have my mom to help me. I want to help the others but they don't like it. They don't like that I'm smarter than them, so I do as well as I can without over passing. Others also tell me that I don't understand they don't want my help. Older kids tell me that since they're older than me, that they must be right. Even my teachers get blank looks on their faces when I ask them a question that I'm curious about. Like my math teacher when I ask him about why we haven't traveled to other planets when it's obvious that there's other life forms out there. My science teacher looks at me weird when I ask about reusing the gaseous emissions and trying to renew them or repurpose them for something else. When they get something wrong, I want to correct them, but they pull the adult line. There's a couple kids in my class that like me, but they make comments about my mother and it makes me think that they just like me cause of my mom. My dad does that all the time. He uses me to get the attention of other ladies. Or he forgets I'm there and hooks up with his latest fling. He wanted to get close to some other lady and he told me that if he looks like a good dad, maybe more ladies will start to look at him more. So I concluded that the other children just want to be with me for publicity, so they can go home and say that they are friends with Cat Grant's son." he said.
Kara knelt down next to him and looked him in the eyes, "Carter, I'm going to tell you something okay? I was bullied as well you know. Middle school was easy but kids were mean. It just got worse when I jumped grades to be in my older sister's class. I came from a place where education was taken seriously and that I had learned all of the curriculum back when I was five years old. Adjusting to a place where the other children were learning what I had already learned was hard. It was made harder because I had to learn English as it wasn't my main language. I learned that it doesn't matter what other's think about you because they don't know you. Just like you don't know them. Everyone has a story to tell and not all stories are the same. They may be jealous because they think you have all the time in the world with your mother when at home they barely see their own. Or that you actually get to spend time with your father when they don't have one. A very good friend of mine told me to never judge someone based on what they say, judge someone based on their actions. Sometimes, people who do bad things were just never shown another way, others like doing it for fun. They told me to always extend a hand first, it is up to the other person to accept it or not. If they don't accept it with grace and walk away. If they do accept, do all you can to help them or if you can't, direct them to someone who can."
I watched as Kara picked him up and he grinned brightly at her. He hugged her then asked.
"Can I stay with you tonight? I wanna ask questions and all." he said.
She smiled, "If it's alright with your mother."
He turned to me and looked at me with pleading eyes.
"Oh alright. You may. Rules still apply Carter okay?" I said.
He nodded and then jumped into Kara, giving her a hug. She laughed and hugged him closer. So that night, Carter went with Kara. When I got home, I sighed. I was looking forward to spending the night with my boy, but he saw something in Kara and he actually liked her.
*Carter's POV*
I was nervous at first when I met Kara, but I really liked her. She was nice and didn't laugh at me. She was funny and did the best impressions ever! She even got my mom down. She answered all my questions and even when they were more advanced for me. She saw me and didn't dumb anything down because of my age. She treated me as an equal and respected me enough to tell me whether or not it was something I should know. When I asked to stay with her for the night, mom agreed.
I wanted to spend more time with Kara because I wanted to. I got to meet her older sister who was cool and as nerdy as Kara said she was. Kara made me feel safe and I liked it. I asked her what she knew and she told me. She told me she had six PhDs and my mind was blown. Her sister, Alex, told me that she had two PhDs too. They both encouraged me to ask questions about their fields and I happily asked questions. Like quantum physics and string theory and all that stuff. I even got to go through like half the math book with Kara explaining it better than my teachers did.
*Cat's POV*
When I got into work the next morning, I was greeted with a near tackle by an over excited Carter and a chuckle accompanied by a hot latte in hand by Kara.
"Good Morning Ms. Grant." Kara said.
"Good morning." I said as Carter let go.
The two followed me into the office and I looked at Kara.
"You've got a meeting with the board at 11. Then an editorial meeting at two. Afterwards your free for the weekend." Kara said.
I shooed her out so I could talk to Carter with the order to not let anyone disturb me. She nodded and she left.
"Mom, I really like Kara. Can she watch me again?" he said.
"If she's available honey." I said, "Now, tell me about your night with her."
He beamed and was animated in a way that he wasn't whenever his dad drops him off. I heard all about how Kara was a hidden genius as was her sister. He told me of her skill at board games and that she could probably beat me at Settlers of Catan. He also learned chess from her and international checkers. I smiled at him as he talked. Then he looked serious.
"Mom, how much do you think it would cost to pay Kara to teach me instead of those dumb people called teachers? "He asked.
"I don't think the school would be very happy with that. Nor is Kara licensed to teach." I said.
He just grinned at me, "It's a joke mom. Though I wouldn't mind Kara as a personal tutor."
I smiled because he was cracking jokes. He never did that before. That bond between them grew even more once Supergirl came out to play. It was at night when the flight to Geneva was going down. She wasn't in a suit, but her head was covered. Right from the start, Supergirl had a different feel about her than Superman did. I watched and rewatched the footage to see if I could find her identity. I had a gut feeling of mine and it was one I was unsure about.
Kara arranged a meeting and I named the newest super. I tasked everyone with the job of finding out who she was because she was going to save the Tribune. When Supergirl finally showed herself, truly in a suit this time, I did not hate it. It was the color wheel of red, gold, and blue, but it was rather pleasing to the eye. The blue wasn't a royal blue where it was popping out at you, it was more of a twilight blue with dark red accents. Dark red boots and cape. It had black shoulder guards, vambraces and black guards on her boots. The main difference between her and Superman's suit is the mask. The mask kept anyone from figuring out her civilian identity.
The few saves that Supergirl made after her reveal was proving that she was in fact better than the Man of Steel. She was only a backup in cases where the local authorities could handle a situation, or she was used to scope out a place before the firefighters went in and risked their life not knowing the dangerous pockets in a building. When I managed to get an interview with the caped hero, up close I knew who it was.
I smirked as she came closer and took the helmet off. She grinned at me and told me things no one knew about Krypton. That Superman wasn't able to give. She revealed that she was in fact older than Superman and is his cousin. But that she is not him. She does not abide by the same rules he does and will stand for causes she believes in. She also gave the warning that if she can stop a threat from becoming a bigger issue then she will. She will not draw out a fight just because she could. If she can stop it quickly, she will. At some point she put the mask back on.
It also seemed that the appearance of Supergirl sparked a new fire in Carter. He absolutely loves Supergirl almost as much as Kara Danvers herself. I say almost because Kara has actually painted him a silhouette of Supergirl with a universe behind her and the name. Carter couldn't be more protected than he is with Supergirl with him.
The one downside to it all was the fact that James Olsen appeared at the same time as Supergirl did. I saw him try to saddle up to Kara, as if he knew her this entire time. I saw how uncomfortable Kara was with him and did my best to keep her out of his range. I kept up my insults with her, in order to not show favoritism, but always whispered the true intents and she just smiled. The next morning she placed a watch on my desk. I rose my eyebrow at her but she just pushed it towards me.
I knew what it was and just accepted it. I was touched that she considered me worth the effort. I knew that I just had to press the button on the inside to call the Super.
"Ms. Grant. That watch is for emergencies only and will only alert her." Kara said, "Supergirl put in a fail safe too, one where if you cannot press it and are in need, it will automatically call her. She told me to tell you that if the situation is unsafe for her, it will buzz twice to let her know to come but stay out of range."
I nodded, "Understood."
She winked and left. I gave her the next day off since she's organized it so much and that she's deserved the day off. However, that prompted James Olsen to try and do something to her computer. I watched in veiled amusement but texted Kara about his activities. She just let me know to just see where it goes because James was known as Superman's best friend. She also told me that any important business is done on her tablet, a personal item that she uses for work and rarely uses her company given computer.
Kara completely ignoring James and James trying to get her to trust him was amusing. All because Kara knew that all his plans failed to work. When Kara started taking over for me in board meetings, CatCo actually started to skyrocket to new heights. She pitched an idea to the board to take the Tribune and make it completely digital. An app that has QR codes at the end of each story that link to a digital expansion of the story. Digital gets the basic story for free but people who buy the tribune get free access to the expanded story content but digital only users have to subscribe to get the expanded content. Shared content over digital and print, tying in broadcast by including video segments. She then led the charge in completely overhauling the digital and print sectors with new machinery that ran more efficiently on lower voltages.
James was also on the outs because even though he's the head of the department, he moved as if he were on his own time. I did not care and if I let him stay it would fester more people who want to do the same things. I gave him two warnings already and on the third he'd have to call Perry for his job back.
For Carter's birthday, he wanted Kara there and she made his day. She gave him some very techy things. Like a new tablet that was like hers, a one terabyte storage unit, and a new phone. Then she gave him some Supergirl related things. He looked like he was seconds away from fainting when he saw them. She then dropped the bomb that she was Supergirl and that she was giving him a watch. I watched him freeze before tackling her in a hug. She hugged him close to her and then hovered for a bit.
After his birthday, when it was just the three of us or Alex came along, Carter asked her about Krypton and the planets she's been to. He asked her about all the alien species she knows. He also asked her about her pod and she promised him a ride in it when he was older. He grinned and the night ended when she gently tackled him and tickled him. It was a common sight, the two of them together. A sister and her brother. Heaven help those who want to hurt him because Kara was not.
AN: Hey everyone. I've not given up on these one shots. I've just got no ideas for it is all. It's mostly a part two to the shots I've already done. Any ideas?
I've been thinking of an NCIS crossover one shot where Kara knows Gibbs from the service, Ziva from Israel, and Abby from college.
