Part 2: Neon Shadows
The hiss of decompressing air accompanied the opening of Astraea II's cockpit hatch. Ave climbed out first, his boots landing with a metallic clang on the Gundam's shoulder plating. The city below sprawled like a wounded beast, its arteries flickering with dying neon veins.
Einhard followed, her movements graceful despite the weight of the situation. Asteion perched on her shoulder, its ears flicking as it surveyed the alien environment.
"This place feels… wrong," Einhard murmured, her gaze sweeping across the desolate streets below. "Like it's been abandoned by time."
Ave nodded grimly. The air was thick with an acrid tang, and the oppressive atmosphere pressed against his senses. "We need to find out where we are and if there's any danger."
Einhard's heterochromatic eyes—one a deep purple, the other a vivid blue—gleamed with determination. "Let's get down there and investigate."
As they descended from Astraea II, Ave couldn't help but marvel at Einhard's composure. Despite the chaos and uncertainty, she moved with a quiet confidence that steadied his nerves.
"Stay close," he reminded her, his tone protective.
"I'll be fine, Ave-kun," she assured him. "But I appreciate your concern."
The streets were eerily silent, broken only by the occasional flicker of malfunctioning holographic billboards. Shattered glass and twisted metal littered the ground, remnants of a world that had once thrived. The scent of rust and blood hung thick in the air, mingling with the acrid stench of burning circuitry.
Asteion meowed softly, drawing their attention to a faint shimmer in the air. Einhard's brow furrowed. "Tio senses something… off."
Ave's hand instinctively moved to the sidearm holstered at his hip. "Stay alert."
They pressed forward, their footsteps echoing through the desolate landscape. The oppressive silence gnawed at Ave's nerves, but Einhard's steady presence kept him grounded.
"Do you think we're still in our universe?" Einhard asked, her voice thoughtful.
"I'm not sure," Ave admitted. "But wherever we are, it's not friendly."
A sudden screech tore through the air, sharp and guttural. Shadows twisted and writhed at the edge of their vision, unnatural shapes that defied comprehension.
Einhard's hand tightened around Asteion. "Ave-kun…"
"I see it," he said grimly, drawing his weapon. "Get ready."
The eldritch forms surged toward them, a cacophony of madness and malice. Their warped flesh shimmered with an unsettling iridescence, and grotesque appendages twisted unnaturally as they moved.
Einhard's eyes narrowed with fierce determination. "Tio, standby mode."
The snow leopard plushie shimmered and floated beside her. A radiant light enveloped Einhard as her Barrier Jacket materialized—a sleek and resilient combat suit accentuated with teal and gold highlights.
She leaped forward, her movements fluid and powerful. "I'll handle this!"
Ave's eyes widened in awe as Einhard struck the first creature, a concentrated blast of energy from her palm shattering its writhing form. Her speed was blinding, each strike precise and devastating.
"Damn," Ave breathed, "you're amazing, Haru."
"Focus, Ave-kun!" she called back, her voice sharp but fond.
Einhard ducked under a claw swipe, delivering a punishing uppercut that sent another monstrosity reeling. Her knuckles connected with a sickening crack, pulverizing the creature's skull-like appendage. Black ichor splattered across the ground, hissing as it corroded the pavement.
Asteion meowed, amplifying her attacks with bursts of light.
For a moment, it seemed they had the upper hand.
But the creatures adapted, their forms shifting into more grotesque configurations. Tendrils lashed out, one slamming Einhard into a wall.
"Haru!" Ave shouted, panic flaring in his chest.
"I'm fine!" Einhard gritted out, pushing herself to her feet. Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth, mingling with a fresh gash above her brow. Her aura flared brighter as she launched herself back into the fray, delivering a series of punishing strikes. One creature disintegrated under the force of her attacks, but more surged forward.
Einhard's breath came in ragged gasps. I can't stop now. Ave-kun's counting on me.
A tendril wrapped around her arm, tightening with cruel strength. Bones creaked under the pressure, and Einhard winced but refused to yield. Her magic flared, severing the tendril in a blinding burst of energy, but the toll on her body was evident.
"Damn it!" Ave surged forward, firing precise shots to free her. He blew off one creature's head, shards of bone and cartilage scattering across the ground. Grabbing her wrist, he pulled her toward him. "We're retreating—no arguments."
Einhard clenched her teeth but relented. "Fine. But we'll come back for them."
"Deal," Ave promised, his grip firm. "Let's go."
They sprinted through the twisted streets, Einhard's breathing ragged but her spirit unbroken. Blood dripped from a deep cut on her leg, leaving a grim trail behind them.
As they found temporary refuge in a crumbling structure, Ave's jaw tightened. "We need a better plan."
Einhard nodded, her expression fierce despite the pain. "Next time, we end them."
Ave's gaze softened. "Just don't scare me like that again, Haru."
She managed a faint smile despite the blood staining her lips. "I'll try, Ave-kun."
Asteion meowed in agreement, its presence a small but comforting beacon in the darkness.
Despite the chaos and danger, their bond had only grown stronger. And together, they would face whatever horrors this world had in store.
