Part 5: Fragments of Light and Shadows

The scorched skyline stretched endlessly before them, a bleak testament to the battles waged and the lives upended. The city remained silent now, a hushed aftermath that felt more unsettling than the chaos of combat. Shattered glass glittered under faint neon lights, remnants of a world that seemed to teeter on the edge of collapse.

Ave and Einhard stood side by side, their breaths shallow as they surveyed the wreckage. The weight of exhaustion pressed heavily on them both, but neither spoke of retreat. The air was thick with unspoken words—fear, relief, and something softer, more vulnerable.

Einhard's heterochromatic eyes—one shimmering purple, the other a piercing blue—flickered with determination despite the cuts and bruises marring her delicate features. Blood stained the edges of her Barrier Jacket, a stark contrast to her pale skin.

Ave's gaze lingered on her, worry etched into his expression. His own injuries—a gash along his forearm and a shallow cut across his cheek—seemed insignificant compared to the sight of her battered form.

"We need to find shelter," Ave said quietly, his voice steady despite the turmoil churning within him.

Einhard shook her head stubbornly. "I can still fight."

"Haru," Ave said softly, stepping closer. His voice took on a gentler tone, one reserved only for her. "You've done more than enough."

Her lips pressed into a thin line, but the weariness in her eyes betrayed her. She looked down, the weight of his concern settling over her like a fragile blanket. I hate looking weak in front of him, she thought bitterly.

Ave reached out, brushing a strand of blood-matted hair away from her face. The tenderness of the gesture caught her off guard, and her breath hitched.

"It's okay to rest sometimes, Haru," he murmured. "You don't have to carry everything alone."

Her heart clenched at his words, at the warmth that seeped through despite the cold desolation surrounding them. "I—I just didn't want you to get hurt," she admitted quietly, her voice barely audible. "I can't stand the thought of losing you."

Ave's expression softened, and something fierce flickered in his chest—an aching need to protect her, not just from the monsters they faced but from the burdens she placed upon herself.

"You won't lose me," he promised, his voice steady. "Not now, not ever."

Einhard blinked rapidly, her resolve wavering. Ave's hand lingered against her cheek, grounding her amidst the storm of emotions threatening to break free.

"Ave-kun," she whispered, the vulnerability in her voice threading through his heart.

Before she could second-guess herself, she leaned into him, her forehead resting against his shoulder. Ave froze for a moment, startled by the sudden intimacy, but his arms instinctively encircled her, pulling her close.

They stood there, bound together by the fragility of the moment. The city's ruins faded into the background, leaving only the steady rhythm of their breaths and the warmth of each other's presence.

"Thank you," Einhard murmured against his shoulder. "For always being here."

Ave tightened his hold, his voice low but resolute. "Always, Haru."

Asteion meowed softly, its plush form perched nearby, as if granting them this brief reprieve.

The world remained broken around them, but in that fragile embrace, there was something whole—something unyielding and beautiful.

Einhard pulled back slightly, her eyes meeting his. Despite the grime and blood, there was a quiet radiance in her gaze. "We still have a mission," she said, though the edge in her voice had softened.

Ave nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Yeah. But maybe we take a minute first."

She huffed a soft laugh. "Just a minute," she agreed, the corner of her mouth lifting.

They began walking, silence falling between them again, though this time it was companionable. Each step carried them deeper into the city's scarred landscape, where twisted steel and scorched earth told tales of past battles.

Ave's sharp eyes caught something unusual ahead—a faint glimmer beneath a mound of rubble. His breath caught in his throat as recognition dawned. "Wait."

Einhard stopped beside him, frowning. "What is it?"

Without answering, Ave moved toward the glimmer, pushing debris aside with mounting urgency. The metal plating, though scarred by battle, was unmistakable. His heart raced as he uncovered more—a gleaming white-and-blue frame, its sleek design partially buried but intact.

Einhard's breath hitched as she realized what they were looking at. "Is that…?"

"Gundam Exia," Ave whispered in awe, his voice tinged with disbelief. "And the GN Drive… it's still here."

The cylindrical core nestled within Exia's chest glowed faintly, pulsing with latent energy. A symbol of hope and destruction both, it lay dormant but not dead.

Einhard's heterochromatic eyes widened as she stepped closer, heart racing. Her gaze locked onto the pristine GN Drive, its energy signature far purer than the GN Drive Tau systems she had grown familiar with. This could change everything.

Her thoughts spiraled rapidly, recalling the relentless battles and the strain Astraea II had endured. One of its Tau Drives had been damaged during the experimental boot-up of the Double Drive System's disastrous test back in their world. The damage had been severe enough that they barely managed to maintain synchronization, constantly teetering on the edge of system overload.

Tio helped amplify my mana conversion efficiency back then, but we won't always have that edge, she thought grimly. If we had a genuine GN Drive, our chances would improve drastically.

Einhard turned to Ave, her expression resolute. "We need to salvage this."

Ave raised an eyebrow. "You're thinking of using Exia's GN Drive to replace the damaged Tau Drive?"

She nodded firmly. "It's the only way Astraea II will operate at full capacity again. And if we're going to survive here, we need every advantage we can get."

Ave studied her for a moment, admiration flickering in his gaze. Despite everything they had been through, her mind remained sharp, always calculating the best path forward.

"You're incredible, you know that?" he said softly.

A faint blush dusted her cheeks, but she held his gaze. "I just want us to survive, Ave-kun."

He smiled faintly. "Then let's do it. Together."
