Part 8: Living Echoes
The steady hum of Astraea II's GN Drives filled the cockpit as Ave expertly maneuvered the Gundam through the star-lit expanse. Einhard remained seated on his lap, her mismatched eyes fixed on the shimmering anomaly that had brought them to this strange, foreboding realm.
"Haru," Ave spoke, breaking the comfortable silence. His voice was steady but carried a hint of determination. "When we reach that tower, I'll handle the fight this time."
Einhard stiffened, turning her head sharply to meet his gaze, disbelief flickering across her face. "Ave-kun, no. I'm fighting too."
A flash of worry passed through his eyes. "You've been through enough already. I don't want you getting hurt again."
Her lips pressed into a thin line as indignation sparked within her. Memories of the nightmare she'd just escaped flickered through her mind—the haunting image of the humongous monster crushing Astraea II's cockpit and taking Ave away from her forever. Her voice trembled despite her best effort to steady it. "And you think I want to see you get hurt? Ave-kun, we're in this together."
He opened his mouth to protest, but the weight of her words sank into his chest. Memories of battles fought and near-misses played through his mind like haunting echoes. His grip on the controls tightened, knuckles whitening. "Haru, please—"
"No," she interrupted, her voice resolute. "I'm not sitting back while you risk everything. I've trained my whole life to protect those I care about. That includes you."
His heart clenched at her fierce determination, admiration and fear warring within him. He knew how capable she was—her strength was undeniable—but that didn't make the thought of losing her any less terrifying.
"I just..." His voice faltered. "I can't go through that again, Haru. Watching you fight, wondering if you'll come back to me—"
Tears pricked her eyes as the echoes of her nightmare returned with full force, but she swallowed them down. She had to stay strong, for him. "And you think it's any easier for me?" she cut in, eyes glistening with raw emotion.
"Every time you put yourself in danger, I'm right there, praying you'll be okay. We're both scared, Ave-kun. But that's exactly why we need to do this together."
Their argument was abruptly interrupted by a soft, insistent meow. Asteion, perched nearby, tilted its head with a look of innocent curiosity.
The absurdity of the moment struck them both. Einhard's shoulders shook as she let out a breathless laugh, brushing a damp strand of hair from her face. "Tio's right. We're being silly, aren't we?"
Ave's lips quirked into a rueful smile, but his gaze remained tender. "Yeah, I guess we are. Haru, I'm sorry. I just—I care about you too much. Watching you get hurt again—I couldn't handle it."
Einhard's throat tightened, and she drew in a shaky breath, remembering the nightmare that had haunted her earlier. Her heart clenched at the image of that monstrous creature crushing Astraea II's cockpit with Ave trapped inside. A flicker of fear lingered even now.
The weight of their shared fears pressed heavily on her chest, memories of her nightmare flickering through her mind—the image of Ave's cockpit crushed, a loss she couldn't bear. Her eyes glistened, but she willed herself to stay strong, determined not to crumble under the weight of her emotions.
"After everything we've been through, the thought of losing you, Ave-kun, terrifies me." She whispered.
Einhard's voice then softened, though her eyes glistened with emotion. "But maybe that's why we're arguing—because we care so much about each other." She let out a weak laugh. "Isn't that kind of silly?"
Ave's expression shifted from guilt to admiration. "Yeah," he admitted, his voice gentler. "Really silly." He reached for her hand, holding it firmly but tenderly. "But if we promise not to do anything reckless and stick together, maybe we can both stop worrying so much."
Einhard nodded, warmth spreading through her chest as their hands intertwined. "Together, Ave-kun. Always together."
Their fingers lingered in the silent vow, the weight of their fears gradually lifting, replaced by a renewed sense of purpose and trust.
Asteion meowed again, almost as if in approval. Einhard chuckled softly. "Thanks, Tio."
As they approached the towering structure that loomed ominously on the horizon, Einhard's breath caught in her throat. The tower was massive, its once-majestic form now corrupted by a monstrous presence.
Tendrils of writhing flesh and grotesque wings clung to its surface, pulsating with a sickly glow. The creature's form defied logic, a nightmarish fusion of organic and eldritch elements. Its many eyes glimmered with malevolent intelligence, and its sinewy appendages writhed like serpents.
"What is that thing?" Einhard whispered, her voice tinged with disbelief.
Ave's expression darkened as he analyzed the readings on Astraea II's sensors. "Whatever it is, it's powerful. We'll have to be careful."
Einhard nodded, her gaze unwavering. "We've faced worse. We can handle this."
As they drew closer, Astraea II's main monitor flickered, displaying a group of figures moving toward the base of the tower. Einhard leaned forward, her curiosity piqued.
"Ave-kun, look," she said, pointing to the screen. "Are those... police officers?"
Ave magnified the image, revealing a team of women clad in tactical gear. One of them, distinct from the rest, wore a shrine maiden's attire, her movements graceful yet purposeful.
Einhard's eyes widened as curiosity mingled with confusion. A shrine maiden? Here? The juxtaposition of traditional mysticism with tactical police operations was bewildering.
Her gaze lingered on the screen, tracing the graceful yet determined movements of the figure in the ceremonial attire. She stands out from the rest—like someone with a unique role or greater responsibility.
Einhard's mind raced. What kind of world is this, where shrine maidens fight alongside officers? Are they dealing with threats beyond the ordinary? The thought unsettled her, yet it also piqued her interest.
"Good question," Ave murmured, activating Astraea II's sensors to scan the group. The quantum system quickly recorded an insignia on their uniforms: AMP.
"AMP," Einhard repeated thoughtfully. "That must be the organization they belong to."
Ave nodded. "We'll need to remember that for later. It might be important."
Einhard's thoughts raced as she observed the police force. Their coordinated movements and high-tech equipment spoke of their professionalism. The presence of a shrine maiden among them was unusual, yet it intrigued her.
"They remind me of the task forces back home, but with a touch of mysticism. I wonder what kind of threats they're used to dealing with."
The two of them shared a cautious glance. "Do you think they're here to fight that thing too?" Einhard asked.
"Looks like it," Ave said. "But we can't assume they'll be friendly toward us. We need to stay on guard."
Einhard's expression softened with concern. "If they're risking their lives to fight that monster, they must be on the side of good."
Ave smiled faintly. "You always see the best in people, Haru. Let's just hope you're right."
Their conversation was abruptly cut short as the eldritch creature let out a guttural roar that reverberated through the air. Its twisted form writhed violently, sensing the arrival of Astraea II.
"It's noticed us," Einhard said, her voice steady despite the tension thickening in the air.
Ave's grip on the controls tightened. "Then we'll just have to make sure it regrets that."
Einhard's heart raced, but she drew strength from Ave's presence beside her. "Together," she reminded him, her voice firm.
He met her gaze, determination blazing in his eyes. "Together."
As the monstrous entity prepared to unleash its wrath, Astraea II surged forward, its GN Drives blazing with radiant energy. The path ahead was perilous, but with their unyielding bond and newfound hope, Einhard and Ave were ready to face whatever awaited them.
