Chapter 49

Jealousy

Sam pushed the coffee across the island to Lex as she sat down. Bucky was nowhere in sight yet, and Lex seemed very relaxed. She eyed him pointedly, as she took the mug he offered. "Yes, Sam?"

"So, you and Buck worked everything out?" he asked wiggling his eyebrows. He knew Bucky had a soft spot for his fellow super soldier, heck, he had a flaming torch for her. Sam was also well aware that the female super soldier was also a hardened killer and didn't like showing any emotions outside of her usual psychotic tendencies or sarcasm.

"What were we working out?" she asked, her expression blank as she brought the mug to her lips.

"If I may, I think he is alluding to the obvious sexual tension between you two," Zemo commented from the stove he was working over.

Sam turned to look at Zemo incredulously. This man clearly wanted to get them both killed. "No, you may not!" He looked back to Lex. "Lex, I was not alluding to that at all. I just meant there was obviously something that you two needed to talk about."

Lex smirked. "First of all, nothing sexual happened between us." She took a sip of her coffee, her eyes trained on Sam the whole time. "Last night." Sam was sure his jaw damn near hit the floor. "And secondly, what happens or happened between Bucky and I, is our business. Third, Sam…" she put her cup down. "Learn to knock first."

"Yes, ma'am."

Bucky, Sam, Lex and Zemo strode towards the courtyard of what he imagined was probably a formerly stately looking manor. Now, it appeared to be run down, and filled with refugees. There were children playing in the courtyard, elderly men were situated around a rickety old table playing cards while a few other adults were doing menial things like washing and fixing furniture.

"Shame what's become of this place. When I was young, we used to come here for fabulous dinners and parties. I knew nothing of the politics of the time, of course, but I remember it being beautiful," Zemo commented as they entered the courtyard.

The group stopped, Bucky also taking in the tall building that stretched out before them. It appeared to be multistoried, and he could see people looking down at them suspiciously from above. He saw Lex step forward as a ball rolled towards them from the children playing. She flicked it up with the toe of her foot, bouncing it a few times as the children watched but didn't approach. Lex kicked it lightly, so it bounced before one of the children, enabling them to catch it easily.

"Heh, usually the kids would be a sucker for my football skills," she muttered, eyeing the kids with concern. She looked back to Sam and Bucky. "It's not going to be easy to get information out of the people here. They don't trust strangers."

Sam sighed, walking ahead of them. "I'm gonna take a look around upstairs. See what you can find out here." He pointed at Zemo as he kept walking. "And keep an eye on him."

"I'll stay out of your way," Zemo commented, but Bucky didn't miss the smirk on his face.

"I'm going to see if I can't find anyone I met in my travels with Karli and her crew. Maybe they haven't heard about me yet," Lex said raising an eyebrow, but she looked skeptical.

"So, you're gonna leave me with him?" Bucky asked, feigning hurt as he turned to look at her.

She scoffed lightly, placing a hand on his shoulder in mock comfort. "I trust that out of all of us, you would be the second person to shoot him without asking questions."

Bucky frowned. "Second? Whose the first?"

She winked in response, before glaring at Zemo and then walking towards the group of older men playing cards at the table.

He then started doing the rounds in the courtyard, asking any adults close by if they knew anything, but they were all quick to shut him out. Either straight out telling him no or ignoring him and quickly hurrying away. It was becoming increasingly frustrating, as he finished asking all those present in the courtyard. After half an hour, he gave up.

Bucky watched Zemo as he reached into his coat pocket, beginning to walk towards the children.

" Baa, Baa, black sheep, have you any wool?

Yes, sir, yes, sir, three bags full

One for my master, one for the dame

One for the little girl who lives down the lane "

Bucky grimaced. If there were a way to get creepier than Zemo right now, he couldn't think of it. He seemed to have attracted the attention of the children though, as they looked at him with interest as the sound of candy wrappers came from his pocket. He sat on a stool, grabbing another stool nearby and placing it in front of him not far from the children, pulling the Turkish Delights from earlier out of his pocket.

He couldn't hear what Zemo was saying to the children, but a young brunette girl, who had to be no older than 10 or so, who stood at the front of the group of children protectively and curiously, seemed to be responding to him.

He heard footsteps approaching from his right, recognizing Sam's gait.

"It's starting to feel like a dead end," Sam said, stopping beside him with a frustrated sigh. Bucky saw him frown and follow his attention on Zemo.

"The hell is he doing?" They watched as Zemo stood from his stool, pulling a bag from his pocket and pouring more candy onto the stool he had just stood from. He motioned to the men, then put his finger to his lips, before smiling at the children and walking away.

Zemo walked towards the pair, smirking slightly and motioning to the children. "Cute kids."

Bucky and Sam watched him walk away, eyeing him suspiciously.

Lex looked around the courtyard, trying to find the three men she had arrived with, but couldn't see them. She turned, seeing a familiar face.

"What are you doing here?" he demanded in disdain. An expected response.

"Max, where is Donya's wake being held?"

"I have nothing to say to you, Karli told us about you."

"Karli has said a lot of things, not all of them are true. She's also killing a lot of people, and not all are justified," Lex responded, stalking closer to Max. He was a teacher at the refuge for displaced persons. She had assisted him with the children once or twice. She knew he had held a flame for her, and perhaps she could use that to her advantage.

"So, you agree that some of them are justified then?" he demanded, standing his ground. She had to admire his bravery, not many men could stand their ground against her. Especially knowing she was enhanced, as was quickly established through the Flag Smashers group.

She shrugged. "I'm the last person to care about a few men in uniform who think throwing their power around is their right."

"So, why did you betray Karli?" he asked, a hurt expression spreading on his features.

She looked seriously back at Max as she took another step. "Because not all of those people deserved to be blown up. There were men in those buildings who really did want to help. They had children too. Kids like the ones here. Those kids don't have a father now. I'm not saying I agree with the way the GRC is doing things, but I sure as hell don't agree with how Karli is doing things either. At the start, I could see it her way. Take back the things the displaced needed. Help the displaced, but not like this. Not at the cost of lives."

Max frowned, moving to sit on a windowsill. "But she said they didn't care."

"She doesn't care, not anymore. This monster is getting bigger, I know they had the right motives originally, and I suspect that some of them still do, but Karli…she's become corrupted with the infamy, and the power. I've seen this before. It's lead to many tyrants in the past and will probably lead to many more in the future. But I need to find a way to stop her without any more bloodshed. And I think I have someone who could do it, if I could find the chance for him."

Max snarled. "Who? This new 'Captain America' the US has been advertising as their new poster boy?"

"Ew! No. God no. He crumbles under one punch," she retorted shuddering. Max's eyebrows raised at her response, but he looked at her curiously. "Falcon. He doesn't want to lock Karli away. He wants to talk to her. Convince her that there's got to be a better way." He didn't look convinced. "Look, Max. I know you think you know me, but you don't. I've lived so many lives, been through so many wars. I am nothing like the Flag Smashers. I wish I was, but during my youth, I hid away from the wars and didn't help anyone but myself. It took Captain America, the real one, to make me realise that perhaps I could have and should have done more. So, this is why I'm here. I'm doing something, I'm trying to fix this, without resorting to violence." She shuddered, making Max frown. "Look, this is very new for me, not just punching or shooting something to solve it. Just trust me when I say, while I understand the GRC is not helping out as best as it should, Karli is also not helping in the best way she can."

Max sighed, standing up and folding his arms. "I have no idea what you mean by living many lives, you're not that much older than me." She scoffed, causing him to look at him expectantly but she waved it off. "I can tell you where the ceremony for Donya will be. Promise me that you won't cause a scene at the ceremony."

She offered him a grateful smile, stepping towards him. He shrunk away from her slightly, making her chuckle quietly. "Thanks, Max." She pressed a kiss to his cheek. "Take care of these kids, yeah? We will try and get you some extra supplies down here, when I find out whose heads I need to knock around."

"You said no violence."

"Ugh, that's right, I did say that, didn't I?" she palmed her face in exasperation. All that time with Steve had really done a number on her.

Bucky threw his head back in exasperation, rubbing his hand through his hair as they filed back into the apartment. He dropped into the lounge. "Well, I got nothin'. No one's talkin' about Donya."

"Yeah, it's because Karli is the only one fighting for them," Sam commented, looking to Lex, who nodded.

She had been oddly quiet since she had returned to them at the manor. He was sure he had seen her talking to a man on the upper floors of the manor. He swore he had also seen her kiss him on the cheek. He tried to convince himself that the fact she had kissed him on the cheek had meant nothing, but there was a little voice at the back of his mind, a little pang of jealousy that wondered whether there was more to it.

"And she's not wrong," Lex admitted.

Bucky frowned, staring at her for a moment. "What do you mean?"

Sam stepped up, looking thoughtful. "For five years, people have been welcomed into countries that have kept them out using barbwire. There were houses and jobs. Folks were happy to have people around to help them rebuild. It wasn't just one community coming together, it was the entire world coming together. And then, boom. Just like that, it goes right back to the way it used to be. To them, at least Karli's doin' somethin'."

Bucky looked from Sam to Lex, who offered a non-committal shrug. He frowned. "You really think her ends justify her means?" He pointed to Zemo who was in the kitchen preparing what appeared to be tea. "Then, she's no different than him or anybody else we've fought."

"I'm not saying I agree with her methods," Lex began pointedly. "I'm saying I see her point of view. It's a little extreme, but a lot of the displaced people resonate her feelings, just not with the killing and what not."

"She's different. She's not motivated by the same things," Sam added. They were silent for a moment, considering the information.

"That little girl. What'd she tell you?" Bucky asked, looking to Zemo as he walked towards them with a tray of tea and biscuits. He put the tray on the coffee table, looking around at them, and Bucky became suspicious of his hesitation.

"The funeral is this afternoon," Zemo replied, but didn't provide any more information. Bucky could tell that he was withholding further information. His hunch was right, he looked to Lex and saw her eyes narrowed at Zemo. She knew something, and she knew he knew too.

Bucky looked back to Zemo pointedly. "You know the Doras are coming for you any minute. In fact, they're probably lurking outside right now. Keep talking," he warned.

"Leaving you to turn on me once we get to Karli. Hmm. I prefer to keep my leverage." He stood, picking up a cup of tea in the process.

Bucky felt his anger rise, and he was on his feet, walking towards Zemo. Lex also stepped forward. "You wanna see what someone can do with leverage?" Bucky grabbed the cup from him, throwing it across the room. Zemo looked stunned, stepping back from Bucky as Lex was quick to intervene, putting a hand on his chest as he moved towards Zemo again. He looked down at her hand, feeling it ease his anger slightly, but the thought of her kissing the man on the cheek earlier, quickly had it rise again and he stepped away from her. She frowned at him but looked back to Zemo expectantly.

"Take it easy. Don't engage him. He's just gonna extort you and do that stupid head tilt thing. Let me make a call," Sam said, moving to stand up.

"I'm waiting on a call too," she said, nodding to Sam. He returned her nod, before moving away from them. Lex still hadn't removed herself from between Zemo and Bucky, looking at him in concern. Bucky continued to glare at Zemo.

"You want some cherry blossom tea?" Zemo asked, looking between Lex and Bucky.

"No, you go ahead," Bucky retorted in annoyance. He grabbed Lex, leading her away from Zemo. "I want to talk to you."

"Sure, you want to not hold on so tight though, Buck?" she said, letting him pull her along. He was quick to release her, stopping to look back at Zemo and then over at Sam to see if they were paying them any attention. When he saw that they weren't he turned back to Lex to find her looking at him inquisitively. "What's wrong with you?"

"Who was he?" he demanded.

She narrowed her eyes. "Elaborate for me? Just to make sure I'm on the same page as you," she said slowly.

"I saw you, at the manor."

"Ahhh, I see. You saw me with my contact." She nodded but didn't seem concerned. "He's an associate from my time tracking Karli's group when I first started."

"What did he tell you?" Bucky asked with interest.

"Standard angry man act. How could you? You betrayed us. Blah blah. Managed to talk some sense into him, he's getting me the details for the funeral as soon as they're passed out."

Bucky stared at her hard for a moment. None of this explained her kissing his cheek. "Who was he to you?"

She frowned. "Um… the teacher of the children?" she stared at Bucky in confusion, and he started to feel mildly sheepish. Is it possible he had a very jealous streak that he wasn't aware of? It had been so long since he had similar feelings he had for Lex, he had never experienced jealousy at any stage of his youth. He got all the girls and could have had any that he wanted back then. Then again, the feelings he had back then with the girls of his time, were nowhere near the level he was feeling for her now. This was a new territory for him, and worse still, he wasn't the most mentally sound man now, by anyone's account.

Her face changed and a look of realization spread across her features before she smiled at Bucky. "I assisted him with teaching the kids in the refuge a few times. It seems my worldly adventures and age proved useful for something. He may have held a candle for me at some point, but he is way too young for me, Bucky." She stepped towards him, putting a hand on his chin. "I like my men as mentally unsound as myself, Bucky, you don't have to get jealous of babies." She pressed her lips to his, before walking back towards Zemo and picking up a cup of tea and settling into the lounge across from him.

Bucky stood still for a moment, looking slightly stunned, before shame washed over him. He had been bitten by jealousy hard.

There was the sound of phone sounding, and Lex stood up. "Got the address."

Sam, Zemo and Bucky followed behind Lex as she led them through the streets of Riga, towards the location of Donya Madani's funeral. He had called Sharon, in the hopes she might be able to get the information for them, but Lex's contact had been quicker, being that they were here on the ground in Riga.

As they turned the corner of a street and headed up hill towards the location, they were met by a rather unwelcome sight in their path.

"Karli Morgenthau is too dangerous for you guys to be pulling this shit."

"Ugh, shit," Lex muttered, stopping fast. Sam and Bucky were quick to sidestep her and put themselves between her and Walker. He began walking towards them, with Lamar close behind him. Sam couldn't help but wonder if they ever took off those hideous uniforms.

"Ah! How'd you find us now?" Bucky demanded, continuing towards Walker.

"Come on. You think two Avengers can walk around Latvia without drawing attention?" Lamar jeered, as he and Walker stopped before them.

"No more keeping us in the dark. You could start by telling us why you broke him out of prison," Walker demanded pointing at Zemo.

Sam and Bucky both looked back at Zemo, before Bucky shrugged. "He did that himself, technically."

"And why are you cooperating with this criminal?" Walker demanded pointing at Lex. "Isn't she one of them?"

Sam could practically feel the tension from Bucky rise at Walker's allegation of Lex. "No, she was investigating them too," Sam was quick to refute.

"Under whose orders?"

"Me, myself and I? As a concerned citizen of the planet?" she answered simply, folding her arms across her chest. Walker narrowed his eyes at her, but Sam knew it would take more than that to make Lex nervous.

"This better be an unbelievable explana…" Walker began, as he moved towards Zemo and Lex.

"Hey, take it easy before it gets weird," Sam warned, holding his hand out to stop Walker from getting any closer. He wasn't concerned for Lex, but more for Walker's well-being.

"I know where Karli is," Zemo piped up.

Walker looked at Zemo and then to Sam. "Well, where?"

"All we know is, it's a memorial. So, we're gonna intercept her there," Sam explained calmly.

"That means civilians. High risk of casualties," Bucky added.

"All right, good, we'll move in fast. Take her by surprise," Walker began, obviously thinking he was the one leading the show.

Sam frowned. "No, I wanna talk to her alone. I'm not losing her again." Walker looked at him suspiciously. "Look, the person closest to her died, she's vulnerable. Now is the best time to reason with her."

"What? No. Wait, no! No! Stop. Hold on. Stop, okay? I think we're way past reasoning with her, unless you forgot that she blew up a building with people still in it," Walker argued in disbelief.

"Sam, you walk in there cold, she could kill you," Lamar also tried to reason.

Sam shook his head. This wasn't dissimilar to counselling military veterans suffering from depression from their service. "If I go in hot and the op goes wrong, more people will die."

Walker looked at Bucky in frustration. "You'll let him do this? Are you gonna let your partner walk into a room with a Super Soldier alone?"

Bucky stood with his hands on his hips. "He's dealt with worse. And he's not my partner."

"I used to counsel soldiers dealing with trauma, okay? This is in my wheelhouse."

Walker shook his head. "I know. And I know those soldiers, which is why I know this is a bad idea."

"That literally made no sense," Sam heard Lex mutter behind him. Walker must have heard it too, because he glared at her. Sam was sure he could hear the smirk on her face, knowing that she enjoyed getting under his skin.

"Wait, John. If he can talk her down, it might be worth a try," Lamar began to reason, finally seeing their side of the debate.

Walker clenched his jaw, clearly still unhappy with the situation. He looked from Sam, to Lex and then to Zemo. "We'll deal with you later," he pointed at Zemo. Then looked back to Lex. "And I'm not done with questioning you either."

"Sure, buddy." Sam saw Walker's eyes widen slightly at her confident and slightly condescending response.

Zemo interjected. "I'm sure it will all come to an agreeable conclusion. My associate is just up ahead." He walked around them, heading towards a large building that appeared to be some type of factory. Sam frowned slightly, surely this wasn't the location for a funeral?

They began to follow Zemo as he walked towards a young girl who was waiting at the entrance to the building. "Hello, my friend. This is for your family. Can you show us the way?"

"What the hell?" Bucky murmured from beside Sam.

The group followed the girl, who led them to a back room of the factory, looking up at Zemo. While Lex's contact had gotten them the location, the young girl had shown them a back area where they could sneak in and out without disrupting the service.

"Karli's in there," Zemo said, after seeing the young girl leave them alone.

"All right." Sam nodded to Lex, who moved to Zemo, grabbing him by the shoulder and moving him away. He groaned as she pulled out hand cuffs and secured him to a piece of machinery.

"Really?"

She offered him a sly smirk, before stepping away from him and leaning back against another piece of machinery. "You've got a shitty track record, Zemo. Can't blame us for a lack of trust." He pulled a face but said nothing else.

Walker walked towards Sam as he headed towards the funeral. "Hey. You've got ten minutes," Walker warned. "Then we're doing things my way." Sam didn't pay him any attention, disappearing through a doorway and out of sight.

"Aggressive. But I get it," Zemo commented, shrugging and looking back at Lex, who just shook her head. She knew guys like Walker. She had seen plenty in her time, all brawn, no brains. Run into a burning building, not thinking about how they're going to get back out. She sat tight, watching him as the minutes wiled away.

She watched as he paced the aisle, often looking towards the doorway that Sam had exited through. Bucky was seated on the step, in front of it, also watching Walker. He glanced towards her once or twice, and Lex could tell he could sense the anxiety in Walker rising. It wouldn't take much to set him off, and they were in dangerous waters now. Lex trusted Sam's abilities, but also knew that garnering Karli's trust was like balancing on the sharp edge of a blade. It wouldn't take much to lose the balance and have her topple off the edge.

Walker's temper could ruin everything.

She watched as he paced towards the doorway again. "Uh-uh. No, no, no. This is a bad idea."

Lex looked at her watch. It had barely been six minutes into their agreed ten minutes. "It hasn't been ten minutes, John. Just sit tight," Bucky warned, not moving from his spot on the step.

She straightened from her spot leaning against a piece of machinery, moving so she was now also between Walker and Bucky.

"Don't do that. Don't patronize me," Walker snarled, glaring at Bucky.

"He knows what he's doing," Bucky replied calmly, not phased by Walker's aggressive mood.

"I'm goin' in." Walker began walking towards the doorway, but Lex was quick to step into his path with her hands on her hips, causing him to stop. "This is all really easy for you, isn't it?" Walker hissed, glaring at her, as she heard Bucky stand up and move to stand behind her. His gaze moved from hers, to Bucky behind her. "All that serum runnin' through your veins."

"It's not all its cracked up to be, Walker. If you calm down, I'll tell you all about the prices I paid for it," she replied, careful to keep her voice even and her expression clear.

Walker narrowed his eyes, looking her over and licking his lips slightly. She had to school her expression upon the realization that she made him nervous. Perhaps it was the fact that she was a female super soldier, or perhaps it was that she was, for a time, considered an Avenger. A colleague of the original Captain America, his predecessor. And he didn't know how to approach her, because technically, she was on the wrong side of the law now. He could deal with Bucky, because Bucky was on the right side now, although he was still tentative about broaching Bucky, and Sam was easy for him. He was just Captain America's sidekick to Walker. And he clearly didn't like the thought of Sam taking all his glory, with his own methods that were so different from his own.

Walker looked past Lex again. "Barnes, your partner needs backup in there. Do you really want his blood on your hands?"

Lex looked back to Bucky, who looked thoughtful, biting his bottom lip. She shook her head. She knew Sam had this, and they had to give them time. If they charged in too soon, the meeting could have the exact opposite effect of what they were wanting.

"I haven't got time for this," Walker said, and shoved past Lex.

"Hey!" Lex glared at Walker and then at Bucky for even hesitating. They both hurried after Walker and Lamar.

Bucky hurried after Walker as he hurried into what appeared to be the workshop floor of a factory. In the centre was a table, where Karli and Sam were seated and talking. "Karli Morgenthau, you're under arrest," Walker shouted. Lex growled in response to Walker's attitude.

"This is what that was?" Karli demanded, hurrying to her feet and glaring at Sam.

"No, wait…" Sam began to try deescalating the situation, seeing Karli beginning to panic.

"Tricking me until help came?" she began to shuffle back as Sam got to his feet, looking back Walker at exasperation.

"We had enough time to talk," Walker retorted moving towards her.

"Nazi," Karli spat.

Walker's eyes widened and he moved towards her again. "Why don't you…" Karli charged at Walker before he could finish. She connected with his chest using her shoulder, knocking him back easily. She turned to run but Lex cut off her path.

"You!" she growled.

"You're not helping your cause, Karli," Lex warned, planting her feet as she saw Karli look ready to charge at her again.

"And you'd know anything about our cause? You're one of them!" she growled, running at her and trying to hit her.

"I'm more like you than I will ever be like them. Do you know who I am? I've been alone for one hundred years, watching as civilization passed me by like I didn't exist, but do you see me trying to kill anyone who slights me?" She kicked back at Karli, sending her flying backwards as the rest of Flag Smashers appear. She frowned. "I mean, I used to do that, but I don't anymore."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Karli demanded as Devon helped her back to her feet and the others stood around her protectively.

"If you just stop and listen, I can explain it to you," Lex groaned, but Walker tried to shove past her. "Mother-"

Karli turned and ran as Walker chased after the Flag Smashers, who split up, running in different directions. Bucky, Sam and Lamar all chased after her, while Lex just shook her head. She wasn't going to waste her energy chasing after them. They were outnumbered and in foreign territory. The Flag Smashers would have mapped every exit when they arrived, she knew that.

Instead, she walked over to look over Donya Medani's body. She'd met the woman once or twice in her short time with the Flag Smashers. She was a lovely woman, very accommodating of anyone who needed help. Lex could recall the analysing look Donya had whenever she had met Lex, like she knew all of Lex's secrets. And she meant all, from her beginnings to her current secrets.

"Donya, the world is a horrible place. I'm glad you'll have your peace now."

She turned and left the large room, heading back towards the front, where several of the refugees were still gathered. She spotted the little girl that had assisted Zemo, she was standing with her family. She raised an eyebrow, before fishing in her pockets for a set of keys. She walked over to the father, who frowned, moving to stand in front of his family.

"Here." She tossed the keys to him when she was about a metre away. "The address is on the tag. I have no use for it." The man looked down, his eyes still frowning as he looked at the set of keys. "Take your family home. Take as many people in as you can."

Finally, it seemed to dawn on him what she was saying, so she quickly turned away as he appeared like he wanted to speak to her, not letting him have a chance to object.

It was no big deal. She had amassed a small fortune in her time, although she tended to keep a low profile for the sake of autonomy, but the property in Latvia that she had bought in the 90s rarely got much use.

There was the sound of a gunshot back inside the factory, and she looked back towards it expectantly.

She heard her ear-piece crackle and Bucky's voice come through.

"I lost her."

"This place is a maze," Sam agreed, also sounding breathless. "Lex, any luck?"

She looked around, spotting a car racing out of the compound and heading into the city. "Looks like they're headed to the other side of the city, no catching them now that they have wheels? Also, has anyone seen Zemo?"

"Shit," Bucky growled.

"God damn it," Sam added.

She rolled her eyes. Of course, Zemo would have found a way to slip away. "I'm outside, whenever you're ready."
