Although many environmentalists are concerned with the effect of windmills on bird populations, there is one bird species which seeks them out. Wattrel are born gliders who electrify the wind as they fly and hunt fish or smaller flying pokemon; for them, a machine which generates power from wind is both a power-up and a perpetual feast.
The humans who build and maintain windmills typically view Wattrel as pests, both for draining the power itself and for their penchant to use wind turbines as weapons against pokemon too strong for them to defeat – and often also too large for them to fully devour. Sinnoh's Valley Windworks solved its Wattrel problem by either importing a Drifloon, or by the spirits of Wattrel's victims merging together to form one.
Paldea's vast plains, peninsular coastline, and windswept cliffs form an ideal habitat for Wattrel, and in this region alone they have managed to dominate the regional bird niche. Yet their tendency to ride winds and migrate have made them a remarkably widespread species; there is nowhere in this world where one can build a windmill without attracting a flock of Wattrel.
On the whole, of course, Bird Keepers endorse attempts to making windmills less dangerous, trusting that the increased number of Pidgey, Fletchling, and other fliers will more than make up for the loss of Wattrel; few who do not train them will ever mourn the departure of one of Sky Battles' most menacing pokemon. Yet the sight of Bird Keepers scattering specialized pokemon food around (or even attempting to damage) bird-safe windmills has become a common form of protest; the culprits are fans of Wattrel, who fear that, absent this food source, the species will no longer be found in their home region for future trainers to capture.
