The light slowly started to fade away, clouding everything in darkness. The Goddess of Water Aqua began to wake up and place her feet onto the surface of the floor beneath her. She remained seated in her singular chair, contemplating on the very real-like dream she had just experienced moments prior.
She placed a hand onto her face, feeling a slight stream of moistness running down her cheek.
"Was I crying?", Aqua mused to herself.
She then stood back up to check on the book given by her junior Goddess. It had suddenly stopped glowing, so she decided to tuck it into her drawer. After finishing up her morning routine, she went back to work; an unknown, yet recognisable smile plastered on her face, to which she had become unaware of.
She entered her divine plane, sat back down on a chair and opened her daily quota book.
After swiftly flipping through the book, she noticed that there happened to be more entries than the last time she checked.
"Did I skip a day or something? There's quite a big queue now..."
As she began brooding the first soul on her list had arrived in front of her
Shortly after being Startled by his sudden presence, she quickly regained her composure to greet the poor soul.
"Uhhh… welcome, stranger."
'Owch, my hips are killing me right now', Eris thought to herself as she sat for hours watching over Belzerg. 'A nice and cozy hot bath after this sounds quite pleasant right about now; although the more I think about it, I'm really starting to regret taking Aqua-senpai's shift', It had become nice and peaceful in the land of Belzerg nowadays. Aside from the usual petty crimes and small battles, it really hadn't escalated too much to the point of unrecoverable damages for a long time.
'At least there won't be any more demon kings for the upcoming few centuries now.', She smiled to herself as she turned off the projection and headed back to her quarters.
After entering her room, Eris took a relaxing bath and ate some light sweets to satisfy her sweet tooth.
She then opened her drawer to take out a slim-looking book, the right size for a diary. Soon after writing in it for a bit, she placed it back into her drawer, and glanced at a picture frame over on her desk, in which a group of people could be seen; each one of them smiling and posing.
Most of them were either armed or dawning an armor and vest, whilst there stood a thin-looking girl with silver hair and a scar on her face standing out from said group.
She turned the frame and opened it to find a small photo attached to the inside of it. It was of that of a boy with black hair who just so happened to be her old partner when she used to be a human.
"Woah-ho! What a handsome looking man!", A cynical comment came out from behind her.
Eris once again got startled, but proceeded to act and swing her hand backwards with an embarrassed yell, then jolted into a defensive position as the picture frame fell onto the ground, unbeknownst to her.
All she saw in front of her instead was a goddess flopped down on the floor, that Goddess being none other than her senior.
"Aqua-senpai!", Eris gasped after realizing.
"Owch. Damn That stings, did you really have to hit me that hard?", The senior Goddess asked as she rubbed the part of her cheek that had gotten smacked.
"I am deeply sorry about that, Aqua-senpai, but then again you did surprise the creeps out of me, and I acted accordingly. Now, could you please tell me what you're doing here in the first place? How did you even get in?"
After removing the hand from her cheek, Aqua stood back up. "Haha, I can see you still have some of that adventuring instinct in you."
"Yeah, I guess so.", Eris admitted with a sigh.
"Say, I wonder who this heroic-looking guy is? Anyone I know?", Aqua said as she slyly picked up the photo from the ground.
Unfortunately she saw exactly what her junior was staring at by the time Eris snatched the frame back from her in a swift swipe.
"Was that…", Aqua kept her eyes locked on her empty hand, dumbfounded.
"Lady Aqua, you know you shouldn't be snooping on other people's personal life. That being said, could you please actually tell me what you're doing here at this time?"
"Wait, don't we usually snoop on other people's lives for a living?", Aqua asked in a slow tone.
"Umm… but that's different, Aqua-senpai. I guess you only came here to invade my room again. Still, how did you even get in here this time?"
"Well, actually, I came here to offer you some cake. I heard that you took my shift while I was asleep, so I wanted to say thanks. By the way, your door was already open, so that's how I was able to sneak in and discover you getting lost in your own prince charming."
Aqua then opened the box she had dropped, and offered Eris a piece that wasn't squished.
Soon after they both sat down, with Eris on her own chair, and Aqua on the bed. The Junior Goddess hesitantly received the cake box purely out of gratefulness. "You really didn't have to do this for me, Aqua-senpai; I only filled in just a small shift for you."
"This isn't even about the shift anyways, silly. As a junior, it's kind of your duty to help out your seniors. Hopefully one day you'll find yourself in my place, and have your own juniors take shifts for you. This is just for everything you've helped me with up to now.",
As Eris gobbled on her cake, she couldn't help but feel a little giddy in the moment. 'Lady Aqua really is the most pristine and affectionate person I know when she's not faking her kindness', she smiled as she watched Aqua eat her own piece of cake.
"What?" Aqua cocked an eyebrow when realizing she was being looked at.
"N-Nothing, I'm just happy for the treat.", Eris replied.
"Glad you liked it, Eris. Now am I or am I not a great senior Goddess for offering this to you?"
"Why yes, lady Aqua, you most definitely are." Eris said sarcastically with an expressionless look. Soon after, they both sat in silence for a few minutes prior to talking about some trivial things.
Aqua began taking her leave until she caught sight of the photo frame again, this time showing the image of Eris with her comrades.
"So I guess these were your friends from the mortal realm, huh?"
"Yeah…", Eris replied in a depressive tone.
Aqua grabbed the frame from the desk, giving it a hard, observing look. "You look so meek here, Eris. It looks like you're flustered in this picture."
"Well, I was kind of hammered and a bit tired at the time, but I was also quite shy around everyone else."
"Hey, isn't this the same guy from the photo you were staring at a few minutes ago?"
"I wasn't staring!", Eris yelled out in embarrassment.
"Relax, I'm just kidding, but also not at the same time. I know how much you loved this guy, this… Eliot guy, if I remember correctly."
"How... how do you know about him? I've never even mentioned him to anyone, not even to Ishtar-sama." Eris said, taken aback from her senior surprising her like that.
"I'm aware that people usually think of me as dumb and oblivious to everything, which I can be for the most part, but c'mon, some things are just too obvious for me to try and understand."
"I'm the one who recruited in the first place, remember? I was there watching you pay that anticlimactic goodbye to your friends that day.", Aqua briefed to Eris, making it sound obvious from the start..
"Was it really that easy to tell? I thought I hid away my past very well."
"If the people you know start talking to you about your deepest secrets, then I think it's a sign that they truly do care about you. It must've been really painful for you to keep all this to yourself this whole time, Eris.", Aqua kept her gaze straight onto her Junior's eyes as she empathized with her. She had tried to avert her own gaze, but eventually met her Senior's stare and took a deep breath, "Yes… yes it was.", It was enough to answer all the questions on her mind.
Aqua looked towards Eris and smiled, "if you ever need someone to talk to, Eris, I'll always be here for you.", She got up and started heading for the door.
"Uhm, Aqua-senpai, I would appreciate it if you could accompany me with dinner tonight."
Aqua looked at the Omnipresent clock on the room's wall.
"Sure, I'd love to.", Aqua replied with a warm smile, and closed the door behind her.
Sounds of laughter and chit chat could later be heard as another day in the divine realm was coming to end.
