Angela, what's going on with you and Tony?"
"I don't know what you are talking about." Angela sighed and looked out the window,
Mona shot her daughter an 'Oh Please!' look. It was obvious to everyone ever since Tony started dating Kathleen things were tense between them. Even though they both tried to put on a happy front for the family it was obvious things were awkward between them. That had been one of the reasons Sam had accepted the job in New Mexico. The night before she left she confided in Mona she couldn't stand being in the same house watching her Dad and Angela acting like polite strangers. And watching her Dad go out with Kathleen infuriated her. She knew he was in love with Angela but instead got involved with another woman. She loved her dad. She really did. But as she told Mona she needed to get away even if it was only for the summer.
They were now on a plane flying to New Mexico to talk some sense into Sam. Well Tony and Angela were. Mona knew that Sam would come to the right decision on her own and didn't need her 'Parents' to do it for her. But, as always when it came to one of the kids Tony and Angela always presented an united front. But something was off with them. Even though things were different now they would at least be sitting together brainstorming on what they would say to Sam to try to convince her to come home and go to College instead of staying in New Mexico.
Instead she was sitting with Angela while Jonathan was sitting with Tony and they weren't even sitting in the same row. The guys were sitting a few rows behind them. It was obvious something was up and she was going to find out one way or the other. After all, there was nowhere for Angela to go.
"Angela, give it up. I know there is something going on. Look, we all know there has been a little tension since Tony started dating Kathleen. "
"Okay, that's true."
"But, I also know no matter what is going on between the two of you, if Samantha or Jonathan were in trouble you would put that aside and present an united parental front."
"Of course we would. You know that the kids come first."
"Then why aren't you and Tony sitting together brainstorming ideas on how you're going to get Sam to come home?"
Angela sighed. Her mother was right. The time was they would have been sitting together trying to come up with ideas. But, the truth was she was still hurt and angry with him. As of right now she didn't want to be near him. It was too painful. She needed some kind of distance so when she made the plane reservations she made sure that their seats weren't anywhere near each other. Okay, she knew she was being childish but she still kept seeing Tony and Kathleen making out on the couch. On her couch. And it infuriated her.
"Well, I just thought Tony and Jonathan could have a little guy time."
Mona rolled her eyes. "Give it up Angela. That is not the reason. So come on, spill it."
Angela shrugged her shoulders.
"Look, we're on this plane and we're going to be on it for a couple of hours. You have nowhere to go. So what is going on with the two of you?!"
Angela looked at her mother. "Okay you're right."
"Of course I am. Now talk!"
Angela picked up her glass of juice and took a long swallow. She set it back down on the tray and took a deep breath.
"I caught them together." she mumbled.
"What was that?"
"I caught them together." Angela said a little louder.
"Who? Wait a minute! You mean Tony and Kathleen?!"
Angela nodded.
"Okay, hold on a minute. What do you mean by together? They weren't in Tony's room having sex were they?"
"No, the couch."
"They were having sex on the couch?!"
"No, no. They were making out on the couch. But, come on. If I hadn't come home when I did, who knows?"
"Okay, so what happened?"
"Well I slammed the door to let them know I was home and they broke apart like they were doing something wrong." Angela scoffed. "You know it was almost funny the way they scrambled apart like they did. But that was when I noticed she had her shoes off. And it made me so angry!"
"Why?"
"Because it means she feels comfortable there. At my house! Look, I can deal with all of this if Tony is at her apartment. But, the fact that he brought her into our house. Into our family house just so he could make out with her…" Angela angrily wiped the tears that had fallen down her cheeks.
Mona handed her a napkin and waited a few moments until she got herself under control.
"Okay, so I take it you confronted the two of them?"
"No, just Tony."
"Why just him?"
"Because no matter how much I resent her being in our lives it's not like she pushed her way in."
"Tony pulled her in."
"Yes, he pulled her in and pushed me out." Angela grumbled.
"Is that how you really feel?"
"How else am I supposed to feel? We were building toward something. We were on our way to becoming a couple. And well he… Well, we both know what he did."
"Angela, have you ever considered the fact that he is scared?"
"Scared? Of what? Me?"
"Yes, of you."
"But, I'm his best friend."
"Yes, but he is also in love with you."
Angela snorted. "Yeah right mother. He is in love with me but screwed another woman. And when I gave him an out by telling him that he was under a lot of pressure from his exams and that it was over and when I asked him if it was over with her do you know what he told me?"
Mona shook her head.
"He said I don't know! He didn't know if it was over with her. And I felt like I had been punched right in the stomach. If he had told me he had gotten caught up in the moment I could have handled it. But the fact that he chose to keep seeing her.. I just can't.." she shook her head.
Mona took her hand. "Angela, look at me." Angela sighed but did as she was told.
"Don't you see what is going on here? Tony is hiding behind Kathleen. He knows how he feels about you but isn't ready to admit it to you or even himself yet. I mean come on! How about when he took Kathleen to Le Fleur to spy on you and Christopher?! Now, tell me how many people would bring their date to a fancy restaurant just so they could spy on someone else?"
Angela laughed. "It was pretty funny watching him."
"I'm sure it was and I would have loved to have been there. But it just proves to me that he does have feelings for you. Feelings that go much deeper than just best friends."
Angela sighed. "So what am I supposed to do? Wait? How long am I supposed to do that?"
"You do what you are already doing. You keep going out and enjoying yourself. I have to say I am proud of you. You haven't been sitting at home moping while Tony as been going out with Kathleen. I guess the hospital didn't switch babies on me!"
"Mother!"
Mona laughed. "Oh, I'm just teasing you blondie. Look, in all seriousness I am proud of you. A lot of women would hide in their room and wallow in self pity. But, not you. You are out there dating and showing Tony what he is missing."
"Thank you." Angela smiled.
"You're welcome. And hey who knows while we're in New Mexico maybe you'll meet a tall dark handsome stranger and really make Tony jealous!" Mona winked.
Angela shook her head. ``Yeah, right like that would ever happen."
"You never know. You never know."
