A/N: I just wanted to say that I will base the gym battles off of the anime instead of the games. So their first gym battle will be a one on one, like the show.

Firefox122: I actually did base Tepig personality of many of James' Pokemon. Like his Cacnea, Victreebel, Mareanie, Chimecho, and Carnivine. I want Purrloin to basically be their own version of Team Rocket, so I'm intentionally making him more like a Saturday cartoon villain.

Chapter 7: Their First Gym Battle
[Striaton City]
Sam, Lincoln, and Lucy had made it to the pokecenter in Striaton City. After the day Sam caught her new Zorua, they stayed on Route 2 for two more days. All three trained their Pokemon while looking for any new ones to add to their team. They had just finished selling some of the items they found in the space-time distortion. They sold the Star Piece, Comet Shard, bags of Stardust, and the Upgrade Disc. They kept the evolution stones, Magmarizer, and Electirizer.
Sam trained her Snivy, Zigzagoon, and Zorua, which she named Romeo. She named him this because of his consistent attempts to flirt with Lincoln's Zorua. However, every attempt ended in failure. As for Sam herself, she has been helping and learning to cook better from Lincoln. While she was still far from his level, she was able to cook more than what she was used to before coming here. She also found it fun and relaxing hanging out and talking with the 12 year old. She was also continuing taking pictures of him and his Pokemon in the mornings.
Lincoln trained his Tepig, Herdier, and Zorua, while Raticate stood off to the side. Since he was more focused on training for gym battles, he offered Raticate the chance to sit out of the training, which she accepted. As for Lincoln himself, he has been somewhat busy. Tepig and Zorua both pop out of their pokeballs at night to sleep with him. With Tepig always on his chest and Zorua near his head, with her head on his neck and tails around his head. He was still the one cooking their meals, as well as teaching Sam how to expand her cooking skills. He was having fun with her and it kinda felt like hanging out with an older sister.
Lucy trained her Oshawott, Woobat, and Misdreavus, but not as much as the other two. She mostly just watched her brother and Sam. She also found it odd how close and friendly the two became in such a short time. She was more interested in learning more about Pokemon, Ghost, Psychic, and Dark Types in particular. While she had a vast knowledge of Pokemon in her head, she wanted to learn it firsthand. She enjoyed talking with Misdreavus and learning more about her. She also figured out a way to talk to Woobat so she understood. Oshawott however, asked her for a strange request, which she was now sharing with her companions.
"You're signing up for the gym challenge?" Sam and Lincoln asked the goth in unison, confused.
"Sigh, yes I am," Lucy replied. "Oshawott wants to do the same thing as Snivy and Tepig. Misdreavus heard this and expressed a similar interest. Since I want to make them happy, I'm going to sign up as well."
"That's cool, but are you ready for this?" Sam asked worryingly. "You haven't exactly been training your team as much as me or Linc."
"Sigh, I don't know if I'm ready, but I'm going to give it my best," the goth replied.
"Alright, if you're sure," Lincoln said with a smile. "While you go register, I'm going to go trade Raticate." Both girls nodded at him and went to the front desk, while the boy went to the trade room.
Once inside the room, he found the Wonder Trade Machine. He then pulled out Raticate's pokeball and taped a note on the top of it. He then put it in the machine, hit the button, and watched it get teleported. A couple of seconds later, a new pokeball was in its place.
"I hope you find your right trainer Raticate," Lincoln said, grabbing his new Pokemon. "Now let's see who I got!" He said tossing the pokeball. It opened and released an Elekid.
"Elekid reporting for duty!" The Electric Pokemon said while saluting. "I'm assuming you're my new trainer."
"Uh yeah," Lincoln replied, taken aback by the Pokemon's attitude. "My name is Lincoln Loud, nice to meet you."
"Commander Loud! I promise to do everything in my power to help you with your goals!" Elekid said while still saluting.
"Uh, thanks," Lincoln said, lazily saluting back. "I hope we can become good friends." He then recalls Elekid back and puts him with the rest of his Pokemon.
"He's acting like a soldier, was he always like that or was that because of his previous trainer?" Lincoln pondered to himself, before remembering the others were waiting for him. He then rushed back to Lucy and Sam, with Lucy showing off her black badge case. They then made their way towards the gym.
[Striation Gym]
Following the map with Lucy leading the way, they found themselves in front of the Striation Gym. However, it didn't look the way they were expecting. It was a fairly tall red brick building that gave off the vibe of a high-end restaurant rather than gym.
"Are you sure this is the right place Lucy?" Lincoln questioned, looking at the building.
"This place looks like this is where you would take someone for a date," Sam added. However, both Lincoln and Sam winced, thinking about their own romance blunders.
"We're at the right place, or at least according to the map," Lucy replied, looking between the phone and the building. "Maybe it looks more like a gym on the inside?" The other two just simply shrugged at the suggestion and they walked inside.
Once inside, they are only even more confused. The interior looked like a fancy restaurant. Table with elegant tablecloths, silverware, and plates. People, mostly young women and girls, were sitting at the tables eating and dressed up in semi-formal clothing. The three trainers looked around with wide eyes and opened mouths. Before they could say anything they were then approached by three young men. All three of them had long sleeved white shirts under a black waistcoat, black straight leg pants, a white apron, and flat brown shoes with golden buckles. One had green hair, one had red, and the last had blue. They also all wore a bowtie matching their hair color.
"A table for three?" The green-haired man asked. The trainers then found themselves being guided to a free table and sitting down.
"Today, our special is…" the red-haired man said, telling them what the day's special was.
"I'll pour you some sparkling water," the blue-haired man said in a cool tone.
"Uh, we didn't come here to eat," Lucy said.
"Yeah, we actually came here for a Pokemon battle with the Striation Gym Leader," Lincoln added.
"We must have come to the wrong place, sorry dudes," Sam finished, as they stood up and started to leave.
"Did they say Pokemon battle!?" One of the female patrons said excitedly.
"Hold on!" The green-haired man shouted, stopping the trainers. The lights turned off and one of the walls of the restaurant went down into the ground. It was revealed that there was a rocky battlefield behind the wall with a balcony for the patrons to watch the battle.
"If it's a Pokemon battle you wanted, you came to the right place," the green-haired man said, with a spotlight shining on him. "My name is Cilan!"
"My name is Chili!" The red-haired man said, as he stood beside Cilan with his own spotlight.
"And I'm Cress!" The blue-haired man said, as he stood on the opposite side of Cilan with his own spotlight.
"And we're the Striation Gym Leader brothers!" All three of them said in unison. Lucy, Lincoln, and Sam stared at them in surprise. "Now let us show you our partners!" They said releasing their Pokemon. Cilan released a Pansage, Chili released a Pansear, and Cress released a Panpour. The three trainers then took out their phones and pointed them at the Pokemon.
Pansage the Grass Monkey Pokemon. It shares the leaf on its head with weary-looking Pokémon. These leaves are known to relieve stress.
Pansear the High Temp Pokemon. This Pokémon lives in caves in volcanoes. The fire within the tuft on its head can reach 600 F.
Panpour the Spray Pokemon. It does not thrive in dry environments. It keeps itself damp by shooting water stored in its head tuft from its tail.
"Now you can pick who you want to face," Cilan told them.
"So we pick who we challenge?" Sam asked, slightly confused. All three gym leaders nodded and the three trainers huddled together, to discuss who was going first and who they were facing. After a couple of minutes, they broke the huddle.
"Alright we decided, I'll challenge Cilan," Lincoln started.
"I'll take on Cress," Sam continued.
"And I'll face Chili," Lucy finished.
"Alright! So who's going first?" Chili asked in a cheerful voice.
"I will!" Lincoln replied, stepping forward.
"Okay then, let's get into positions," Cilan said joyfully.
They all then moved to the battlefield, with the restaurant patrons moving to the balcony. Lincoln and Cilan got into position, Chili was acting as referee, while Sam, Lucy, and Cress stood off to the side of the battlefield. The balcony was soon filled with the young women and girls, wearing cheerleader uniforms for some reason.
"Why are they wearing cheerleader uniforms?" Sam asked, confused, looking up at the balcony with a small blush.
"I think the better question is where did they get those uniforms?" Lucy countered, also looking at the balcony. "Did they bring them to the restaurant? Or did the restaurant provide them?"
Sam stops blushing and starts to think about it. "Actually, those are better questions," she said, now even more confused. She then noticed Lucy holding her phone out and pointing it to the battlefield. "What are you doing?"
"I'm going to record Lincoln's match," Lucy replied. "We will be keeping our phone when we go back. So I figure if I record his matches, we can show our family when we get back."
"That's a good idea," Sam said while smiling. "Could you do the same for me? I would like to show my family as well."
"Sure," Lucy replied. Sam took out her phone and started to record the battle as well.
"Alright, this is an official match between Cilan the Striation Gym Leader and Challenger Lincoln Loud!" Chili started to announce loudly. "Both trainers will be using one Pokemon. The battle will continue until someone's Pokemon is unable to battle or someone forfeits. The match begins now!"
"Alright Tepig! You're up!" Lincoln said, sending out his Pokemon.
"Come on out Pansage!" Cilan said sending out his Pokemon. "Let's begin with Scratch!"
"Then let's go with Ember!" Lincoln said.
"Got it Lincoln!" Tepig said happily, before taking a breath and then shooting embers from her mouth.
However, Pansage was able to dodge the attack by hiding behind a large rock. Tepig was surprised by this and was hit by Scratch.
"Don't lose focus Tepig! Use Defense Curl and then Rollout!" Lincoln ordered.
"Got it!" Tepig said. She then curled up into a ball and glowed, before she started to roll at her opponent.
"Dodge the attacks and wait for an opening!" Cilan told his partner. "Once you do, then use Fury Swipes!"
Pansage nodded and focused on his opponent. Tepig rolled at him, but he was able to jump over it. Tepig continued to roll, turn around, and tried again while destroying any rocks in her way. Pansage avoided it again, while Tepig turned around again, while picking up speed. However, this time she was too fast and Pansage wasn't able to dodge, being sent up in the air.
"Pansage!" Cilan cried out in worry for his partner.
"Alright Tepig, stop Rollout and hit it with Ember while it's in the air!" Lincoln shouted. Tepig stopped rolling and started firing her attack.
"Pansage! Use Vine Whip to grab the rocks to dodge the attack!" Cilan shouted.
Pansage attempted to do what it was ordered. Unfortunately, one rock it grabbed wasn't strong enough, and crumbled. Before it could try again, he was hit by Ember. Tepig kept on firing until her opponent hit the ground, making a small dust cloud. When it faded, it showed Pansage was knocked out.
"Pansage is unable to battle!" Chili shouted, holding a hand on Lincoln's side. "Tepig is the winner and Lincoln Loud has won the match!"
"We did it!" Lincoln said happily, before his vision went dark from Tepig latching onto his face.
"We won, Lincoln!" Tepig happily cried, hugging onto her trainer's face.
Sam, Lucy, Cilan, Cress, and Chili were all congratulating him and clapping, while the girls on the balcony were grumbling or depressed.
"Such a wonderful battle," Cilan said, walking up to his challenger, smiling. "As proof of your victory, I'm proud to present you with the Trio Badge!" He then handed him a badge with a red, blue, and green diamond with a gold frame that looked like a pin or hair clip.
"Thank you," Lincoln said, taking the badge and getting Tepig off his face.
"So who's next?" Cilan asked the two female trainers.
"I am," Sam said, stepping forward.
"Very well," Cress said in a cool tone.
Sam and Cress took their position, with Chili still acting as referee. Lincoln went to stand with his sister, while looking at his badge. Lucy smiled at her brother looking at his badge. She then got ready to record Sam's match, while telling Lincoln when he asked what she was doing, which he started to record it as well.
"Alright, this is an official match between Cress the Striation Gym Leader and Challenger Sam Sharp!" Chili started to announce loudly. "Both trainers will be using one Pokemon. The battle will continue until someone's Pokemon is unable to battle or someone forfeits. The match begins now!"
"Let's go Romeo!" Sam said, sending out a Galarian Zigzagoon. Lincoln and Lucy smirked, knowing what was happening.
"Well that's interesting, let's do this Panpour!" Cress said, sending out his partner. "Start things off with Water Gun!"
"Alright Romeo, use a rock for cover and use Shadow Claw!" Sam ordered. This got confused looks from the spectators and gym leaders.
"Got it!" Romeo said, before going to hide behind a rock.
Panpour tried to hit his opponent before he could hide, but Romeo was able to avoid the attack. Once behind the rocks, Romeo's paws disappeared into his shadow. Meanwhile, two shadow claws came out of Panpour's shadow and hit him in the back.
"Panpour! Use Hydro Pump!" Cress ordered.
The Spray Pokemon took a deep breath, before unleashing a large and powerful amount of water from his mouth. The water hit and smashed the rock to pieces, while hitting Romeo as well. The Zigzagoon skidded across the ground, before transforming into a Zorua. This got a gasp from surprise from the audience, while the gym leaders smiled at the revelation.
"Looks like our trick is up," Sam said with a small smile, before becoming serious again. "Alright! Use Agility and Fury Swipes!"
"Right!" Romeo said, before speeding towards his opponent.
"Wait for it to get close and hit it with Scratch!" Cress order.
Romeo got to his opponent and started to feverishly scratch him. However, Panpour was able to hit him with his Scratch attack, sending him up in the air.
"Now use Swift!" Sam ordered, seeing her Pokemon in the air.
Romeo spun around and started to shoot yellow stars of energy from his mouth. Panpour tried to avoid the attack, but unfortunately they followed him wherever he went. The attack landed and sent the Spay Pokemon across the field, knocking it out.
"Panpour is unable to battle!" Chili shouted, holding a hand on Sam's side. "Zorua is the winner and Sam Sharp has won the match!"
"Alright we won!" Sam said happily.
"Yes! This is what I wanted!" Romeo shouted with joy.
Lincoln, Lucy, Cilan, Cress, and Chili were all congratulating her and clapping, while the girls on the balcony were grumbling or depressed again, some being furious or jealous of Sam.
"That was an impressive battle," Cress said, walking up to his challenger, smiling. "As proof of your victory, I'm proud to present you with the Trio Badge!" He then handed her a badge with a red, blue, and green diamond with a gold frame that looked like a pin or hair clip.
"Thanks dude," Sam said with a smile while taking the badge.
"Well, I guess there's only one left," Chili said enthusiastically with a smile, looking at the little goth. "Are you ready?"
Lucy only nodded and the two went to get into position. Cilan took over to be the referee of the match. Sam walked back to Lincoln and the two congratulated one another, before getting ready to record Lucy's match.
"Alright, this is an official match between Chili the Striation Gym Leader and Challenger Lucy Loud!" Cilan started to announce loudly. "Both trainers will be using one Pokemon. The battle will continue until someone's Pokemon is unable to battle or someone forfeits. The match begins now!"
"Sigh, Come out Oshawott!" Lucy said in her monotone voice. As soon as he came out, he started standing in a bizarre pose.
"Uh… Come out Pansear," Chili said, a little taken aback by the Pokemon. When the High Temp Pokemon came out, he had a similar expression as his trainer.
"You were unlucky to be my opponent," Oshawott started saying. "Now you will see my dark power."
"Do I have to battle this guy?" Pansear asked, looking back at his trainer with a confused expression. While Chili could understand what his Pokemon was asking, he didn't know why he asked that.
"Sigh, I told you no monologuing in battle," Lucy scolded her Pokemon. "Oshawott, use Razor Shell!"
"Mistress~, I told you I wanted to be called your dark servant in battle~," Oshawott whined.
"I'm not calling you that! Now start battling!" Lucy shouted, embarrassed and with a red face. It didn't help that she could hear Lincoln and Sam snickering.
Oshawott only sighs, before taking his shell off his chest and getting ready to fight.
"Alright then, let's use Yawn and then Fury Swipes!" Chili said, returning back to his regular self.
"Why did I get the weirdo," Pansear muttered to himself.
Pansear then glowed before letting out a loud yawn. The two Pokemon then started trading blows. Pansear was scratching, while Oshawott was striking with his shell covered with water and blue energy. Suddenly, Oshawott fell asleep.
"Now that it's asleep, use Bite!" Chili ordered.
"Wake up Oshawott!" Lucy screamed, trying to wake him up.
Pansear then bit onto one of Oshawott's arms, waking him up.
"Now that it's close, use Night Slash and then Water Gun!" Lucy ordered.
"Of course Mistress!" Oshawott said while in pain.
He then picked up his shell and it was covered in dark energy. He then struck Pansear, forcing him to let him go. As the High Temp Pokemon staggered back, Oshawott then hit him with Water Gun attack. The attack hit and sent Pansear into one of the rocks on the battlefield, knocking him out.
"Pansear is unable to battle!" Cilan shouted, holding a hand on Lucy's side. "Oshawott is the winner and Lucy Loud has won the match!"
"I won?" Lucy asked in a surprised voice.
"Of course Mistress, there's no way we would lose," Oshawott said exhausted, while striking a pose.
Sam, Lincoln, Cilan, Cress, and Chili were all congratulating her and clapping, while the girls on the balcony were now all crying, seeing all of them lose.
"Now that was a fiery battle," Chili said, walking up to his challenger, smiling. "As proof of your victory, I'm proud to present you with the Trio Badge!" He then handed her a badge with a red, blue, and green diamond with a gold frame that looked like a pin or hair clip.
"Thank you," Lucy said, taking the badge. Lincoln and Sam walked up and Stood beside her.
"So, where are you off to next?" Cilan asked them, joining his brother with Cress beside him.
"We don't actually know," Sam replied with a hint of embarrassment.
"Well the closest gym from here is in Nacrene City," Cress told the three trainers.
"Nacrene City," Lucy said, pulling up the map on her phone.
"Thanks for the info," Lincoln said to gym leaders with a smile.
"It's our pleasure," Chili said, returning the smile. "The next time you're in Striation City, then drop by as customers. I guarantee you'll enjoy whatever dish you get here."
"We'll keep that in mind," Sam said as the three trainers turned and left the gym.
"Well, we got our first badge," Lincoln said to his companions, once they were outside.
"I didn't expect a gym battle to feel that intense," Lucy commented.
"I must admit, I had more fun with that than I expected," Sam commented.
"Excuse me, you three are Pokemon trainers right?" A feminine voice asked them. The three trainers looked at the voice and saw an adult woman with long indigo hair and blue eyes. She wore a white lab coat, pink ballet flats, pink undershirt and pink flower pin attached to her hair. "My name is Fennel, I'm hoping you could help me."
