A Pocket Battleship in all but name, the Freedom class holds the unique title of being the only vessel of the Golden Age that Starfleet admitted was for tactical use. Though surprisingly lacking in interior volume for their impressive size, the Freedom has an impressive combat record against the Cardassian Union and… not much else. But regardless a tactical vessel is a tactical vessel.

Strangely, the Freedom class wasn't ordered to actually replace any specific vessel, but rather the fleet of various Excelsior/Enterprise-based tactical vessels including the Georgiou, Yamato and Proxima classes. These ships, never designed to last as long as they had, were up for withdrawal due to their age, and so a replacement was in order. But, unfortunately, this was during the 2350's, when politics of the day demanded that Starfleet remain a primarily exploratory organisation with little focus on combat tactics. Essentially Starfleet had to build a battleship without it being obvious that it was one, to… interesting results.

The result was the Freedom class, a rather peculiar design with rather peculiar functions. Designed to operate in concert with the New Orleans class light cruisers, acting as the bulk to back them up in combat situations. The ships dispensed with the laboratory space common to other ships of their age, but notably didn't dispense with the luxuries whatsoever. Additionally, due to how they were constructed, they were remarkably cheap to build.

Sitting at 430m long the Freedom class is actually on the smaller end for battleships, and bears a keen resemblance to the old Saladin class destroyers of the 2260's. Sporting a single Type-81 Union Nacelle, the same sported by the Galaxy, Nebula and Challenger class ships, the vessels could realistically be hoped to achieve a maximum speed of Warp 9.6 in emergencies but in practice only cruised at Warp 5. It is notable that mono-nacelle designs, whilst not uncommon, are a rare choice for combat-oriented vessels due to their sheer lack of redundancy. Whilst a dual-nacelled ship can limp home on one, a mono-nacelle would require a tug if the nacelles was rendered inoperable or missing. This nacelle was connected by a large dorsal connecting pylon, housing the ship's SSWR-XXXI-C warp core and the fuel bunkers for it as well as the ship's torpedo launcher, to a somewhat semicircular primary hull. This carried no less than 7 Type X phaser arrays as well as an experimental megaphaser under the primary hull. This weapon was known for heat buildup but could do some incredible things to enemy vessels. A relatively undersized deflector dish could be found underneath the nacelle, one considerably underpowered for the ship's size.

An initial batch of 10 vessels would be constructed in 2355, primarily at the Laikan fleet shipyards over Andoria Prime. As Andoria was one of the largest proponents for the class, the ships would often be crewed by them and popular among them. A few, such as the USS Freedom and USS Firebrand, were however constructed at San Francisco yards over Earth, where many of their sister designs were constructed. The ships proved reasonably successful and so a second batch of 30 would be ordered in 2360, as well as a third batch of 16 in 2368. Overall it was at least moderately successful in its role as a deterrent and combat vessel, though their considerable luxury would also make them surprisingly good diplomatic ships.

The ship's combat history would however prove to be less than glowing compared to its technical specifications.. Their deflector proved to be their ultimate weakness, with the ships having worse shields than even the Enterprise class of 2271, a class in which the first example was refitted from a vessel constructed in 2245. In battle against the Cardassians this would rarely prove to be a problem, however…

On January 3rd, 2368, Stardate 44002.3, the Freedom class USS Firebrand was among a fleet of 40 vessels that engaged a Borg Vessel over Wolf 359. Engaging as part of the third attack wave the ship was the first attacked by the Borg in her group, with the Borg immediately draining her shields and removing pieces from the vessel for study. The bridge crew released the Bridge itself to escape after the crew were ordered to abandon ship, and the impulse reactors blew under the strain. Whilst most of her crew did survive, any caught in the affected area were killed as chunks were physically blown out of the vessel. This would sadly prove to merely foreshadow the Freedom's greatest problems.

Upon news of Cardassia joining the Dominion due to the machinations of one Elmo Dukat Freedom Class were initially expanded, as the class was a modern vessel and capable of being constructed cheaply. It even got to a point where 3 ships of the Niagara class were actively removed from service to temporarily donate their nacelles to Freedom class ships. And initially, due to the lack of ability to actively shield against Dominion weapons by any vessels, the Freedom was nothing special. When war broke out the ships actively spearheaded the first attacks into Dominion territory, using their Megaphasers to blow clean through multiple Dominion vessels. However fixes for the shields against Dominion ships were eventually found and it was consequently found that the Freedom class's deflector assembly… was completely incompatible with them. This single-handedly sealed the ship's fate as they were forced to the back of fleets, where they could take potshots at the enemy from a range where the enemy might not be able to shoot back. As newer ships rolled out the ships were demoted further to garrison duty and escort roles, before finally being sent out on non-combat diplomatic missions to improve morale. 20 ships of the Freedom class were lost in the war, many of them due to being unable to survive even a single hit.

After the war, most of the Freedom class had their weaponry stripped off prior to being sold as commercial cargo and passenger ships. Their luxurious fittings would, despite being a symbol of Starfleet's arrogance when they were built, ultimately save the vessels from being cut up. However a number of ships do still remain in active service, largely in their diplomatic roles. However one may wonder just how long these mono-nacelled oddities will remain in service. Unfortunately that's an answer only time will tell.
