AN: thank you for all the reviews.
For those who don't know, many apartment complexes now use an app where you can request maintenance services, pay your rent and message other tenants, form groups to get to know each other when you have common interests or management send notices out. That is what will be referred to below.
Unknown Neighbor's POV
I pulled into the parking lot of my complex and I see a man walking in circles, waving his arms while yelling but I was unable to understand what he was saying. What a time for my husband to be deployed. I had our son in the back seat sleeping. I'm tired after a long day working as an elementary school teacher, then grocery shopping before picking my son up from daycare. If I try to walk past him, I'm afraid he'll slip in with me. The office sent a message out on the app that there was a police officer trying to access one of the buildings to force a woman to date him and they reminded us to not let anyone in. If they have a warrant, we are to call the new security company to have them come out to verify.
This man didn't look homeless but he did appear to be in a mental health crisis. I decided to call 911. I know I can call the security company or one of my husband's friends to walk me in and carry the groceries but I didn't want them to have to deal with this man.
"911 what is your emergency," the operator said.
"I live at Trenton Watch Factory Apartments, I just came home to see a man walking in the parking lot, waving his arms and yelling. I'm afraid to walk into the building. I'm sitting in the car with my child," I said.
"We'll send someone right over," the operator replied.
Within five minutes I heard sirens and saw two Hamilton Township Police cars enter the parking lot. They walked over to the man and I saw he remained agitated. They wound up arresting him. With that I called my husband's friend that lived next door to come to assist me with the bags.
Joe's POV
I can't believe my Cupcake won't let me in. I swear that woman may be more trouble than she's worth. I mean I can get pussy anywhere, anytime I want. I need a wife to get that promotion to detective. I need to show that I'm the only good Morelli. I not only have to live down my father and grandfather's reputation but my cousin, Mooch, and my brother Anthony's reputation. Add to that my brother Dario. How can a Morelli man be gay?
I hear sirens and see a cop car pull into the lot. These two cops come up to hassle me. What the hell.
"We received a call about a man in the parking lot yelling and waving his hands. What are you doing here," the officer said.
"I'm Officer Joe Morelli, Trenton PD. I had a fight with my girlfriend and she won't let me in," I confidently said.
Another office walked over, "you said Joe Morelli?"
"Yeah, why," I replied.
"We have a warrant for your arrest for vandalism. Book him, Cortez," he said.
I began to yell and struggle but they cuffed me, read me my rights before forcing me into the car and drove me to the precinct. I was booked and told the apartment building was pressing charges. A couple hours later I finally got my phone call.
"Good evening, Morelli residence," my mother said.
"Ma, it's me. I got arrested and I'm stuck in jail all weekend until Monday," I said.
"I'll call my cousin Luigi. What are the charges?"
"Vandalism," I replied.
"Sit tight, we'll get Vinnie Plum to bail you out," she said.
An hour later, ma's cousin Luigi Esposito, came and asked what happened. I told him about going to the apartment and no one would let me in and the door was smashed. I didn't know how it happened. I also explained what happened tonight. An officer knocked on the door and stated there was an additional charge of stalking being added before leaving.
Luigi shook his head, "Joe I gotta be honest, they have video you smashed the door. You should plead guilty. You'll lose your badge but I can hire you after you get your PI license or you can be a bounty hunter. If Ms. Plum filed a complaint about stalking, you are toast. She was in the Army, they will take that into consideration, she's only been home a few days."
"I can't lose my badge. That'll make me a loser. I don't want to lose my career," I yelled.
"Joe, if you take this to trial, they will lock you up. I may be able to get a plea deal for a lesser charge and avoid jail. This is really bad. Even if you aren't convicted of stalking, the evidence will be public record. No PD will hire you after these charges," he explained.
"Fine, whatever ya gotta do. Just get me out on Monday. I can't believe I'm stuck here all weekend," I said.
"You know there are no judges on the weekend. They'll set bail and I'll have a bondsman here," he said.
Stephanie POV
I heard sirens when I was in my apartment so I looked out the window. I saw them arrest Morelli. Holy cow, this is the best news. I had my notebook, grabbed my purse and went next door. I told Ranger and he agreed to go with me to press charges. He was a witness to him sitting in my lot and the buzzer today. We gave a statement at Hamilton PD and they advised they would add stalking charges.
After we finished, Ranger and I went home. I dropped my purse in my apartment and went to meet the guys at Ram's place. We created a huge grocery list. We decided to have Lester and Bobby join Costco, Ram and Hal would join BJ's and Ranger and Tank would join Sam's Club. I told the guys about Melaluca, a wellness company. I joined that and would handle ordering vitamins, protein powder, cleaning products and personal care products. We could each have our own items for our apartment but we would share cooking, shopping and laundry. We were each responsible for cleaning our own apartment. I loved the camaraderie, and it felt comfortable. Like being in the military still.
I was able to meet Hector and we had a brief discussion of what kind of background we each had. He was a hacker and had been in a gang. He had a tear drop tattoo. I assumed he had his reasons for killing someone. I had never known why he had them in my previous life. I knew we'd get along and I could trust him. Luckily I spoke Spanish, having learned in the Army. I was excited to work with him on Monday. I'd finally meet the elusive Rodriguez and I'd get to talk to Silvio.
Ram made chicken chili for dinner and we watched Avengers End Game. We enjoyed the movie but we were sad that Ironman died and Captain America retired. We made plans to go out tomorrow night to a new dance club called Nebula Nights in Ewing. Ranger asked me to go to dinner first and we would meet the guys.
Next morning
My day started like normal with a run and gym time. I walked into my apartment to find the phone ringing. It was the theme from the movie Psycho. I answered it, "Hey mom," I said.
"Where have you been missy," she seethed.
"I went for a run then the gym, like I do every day," I said.
"How could you have poor Joseph arrested, you have a lot to answer for. You will be here for dinner tonight," she said before hanging up.
An hour later I was showered and dressed to go to the Farmer's Market with Ranger. We spent about an hour walking around buying vegetables and meat for the week. We brought them home and unpacked them. While we were putting items away and taking them to apartments my phone rang.
"Hey Val," I said.
"Hey, mom called yesterday and this morning. I'm supposed to talk to you about Morelli," she said with a giggle. "So, why was he arrested," she asked.
I rolled my eyes. "He was arrested for vandalism. He broke the glass door at the apartment building when they wouldn't let him into my apartment. They pressed charges and I assume there was a warrant. Someone saw him in my lot acting like a nut and called the cops so he was arrested. I tacked on stalking charges, and I have a witness. He's stuck in jail all weekend until he can be arraigned on Monday. I hope Uncle Joe suspends him," I explained.
"Mom is really mad, she's worried about poor Angie. I think she should be more concerned about you," Val said.
"She already demanded I come for dinner. Too bad I have a date tonight," I said with a laugh.
"Good. She's losing it. Wait until Grandma and Grandpa move into their new apartment. Anyway, Steve is closing out his cases and will stay here if he has to and rent a hotel room or Air BnB. Would it be okay if I came out for a couple weeks? I can take my test and look at houses and for a job. Is it okay if I use your address for applications," she rushed out.
"Yes, to everything. I'll text you my address. I'll look for bed for the guest room. That way you can have some privacy while you are here. Plus, when you move here, maybe the girls can stay overnight," I said.
"Thanks Steph and they would love to spend time with you. I'll send you my flight info after I book it. You're the best sister ever. The longer I wait to tell mom the better. She's gonna lose her shit," Val said in a happy tone.
I laughed as I hung up and quickly texted her my address before I forgot. Ranger, Tank and I then went to Sam's Club. I explained I had already gotten some things with Mare the other day and wouldn't need them for months. Ranger said those are basics so the guys would pitch in and we can share them because they we all use them and I wouldn't have to store them. It made sense to me. I don't need 45 rolls of TP or 12 boxes of tissues. We would buy more garbage bags, that way we each have a roll for each apartment. Plus, Tank needs them for cat litter, so a box just for him made sense. We also picked up bags of Crystal Light pitcher packs, boxes of rice pilaf, a 25 lb. bag of brown rice, a couple cases of Barilla pasta, Swiffer floor duster pads, sponges, paper towels, bagels, English muffins, frozen foods, cereal, coffee, canned goods, chicken and beef base, broth, spices and a couple cases of Arizona bottled tea. Holy crap we had a cart and 2 flat beds with stuff. We spent a thousand dollars, totally worth the cost of the plus membership because Ranger got cash back.
We came home and unloaded the back of the SUV and divided everything up. We had lunch, courtesy of Hal. Everyone was going out to dinner. Tank, Hal and Cal were going to a steak house. Lester, Bobby, Ram and Hector were going to a seafood place. Ranger was taking me to a Cuban place. I offered to do Sunday dinner.
I had texted Jessica to send me a referral for Melaluca and she had sent it back today. We went back to my apartment and I signed up. We did a huge order that included cleaning products, laundry detergent, vitamins, protein powder, body wash and lotion. I had explained how their cleaning products are concentrated. One bottle of disinfectant would fill multiple spray bottles, we just add water to the concentrate. We spent another thousand here. We also scheduled an order from Riverbend Ranch, their beef ranch.
Man, that was a lot of money for the day. We added all the totals, plus my bill from Sam's with Mare and divided it by all of us. Hector had come over and he pitched in as well. We divided the tissues, TP, garbage bags, Ziploc bags and paper towels up.
After the guys left I determined what I needed to make pasta sauce. I decided to venture to Giovichinni's for Italian sausage, ground beef, parmesan and pecorino romano cheese along with tomato puree and paste. I would make Grandma Plum's sauce and meatballs. I made it out without being grilled or seeing any Morelli women.
I rushed home so I had time to get ready for my date. I was a Jersey girl but I no longer needed hours to get ready. I did need a little time for my hair, I was going to leave it down instead of the military style bun. I was really excited to go out dancing with Ranger. I had a feeling it would be an amazing night.
