CHAPTER 6

IN RUBY, WE TRUST

"Hey look, Sam." Ruby giggled drunkenly as she pointed to a flyer stuck to a wood column inside the noisy, smoky, and dark bar they were in.

It was on top of what looked to be layers and layers of other flyers all with different events advertised on them, past, present, or future, all stapled at eye level on the columns around the little town bar.

They were at a tall table in the middle of a sea of small high tables by what looked to be a square dance dance floor.

A bald man with pouch in a red gingham button up tucked into light jeans over cowboy boots, rattlesnake skin belt to boot and a beige cowboy hat on was simultaneously mastering a DJ table set, electric fiddle, and small organ, God over the small square cut platform of wood paneling on the barn bar floor.

Ruby giggled as she held the poster up to Sam's face after ripping the stapled paper off the pillar; it read, 'LOCAL PARANORMAL CON THIS FRI THRU SUN.' In smaller text was more information and details, and Sam raised his brow at the paranormal-themed poster illustration.

She dramatically said, "We have to go."

Sam groaned, "No, we are so not going to this Ruby. As if we aren't surrounded by paranormal freaks already. As if I'm not already! You being a demon and all… Tell me why I'm here again with you of all…demons?!"

"But Sammy…You said you would buy me anything… ANYTHING!" She said, staring up at him darkly smiling and trailing a hand down his forearm.

Sam looked down at her hand then back up at her face gulping, then grunted, "Are you…flirting with me? That's bribery. I'm not that easy, Ruby. I wouldn't even waste precious supplies of holy water on you. I have nothing for you, demon. Go flirt with some other fool here, God knows all of them are ogling you in here anyhow."

Ruby laughed, "Ooh is Sammy jealous? You sound nervous. That's nothing…right…"

She grinned and rolled her eyes sarcastically.

Sam shifted his shoulders uncomfortably, "You literally killed lust, or you helped us kill her. That's what you do for me, Demon. You kill any feelings of lust or desire inside me, I swear!"

Hitting him rather hard in the chest, Ruby laughed appreciatively.

"Pun totally intended. Good one, Sam."

She sipped at her reddish tinted cocktail in a small glass, swirling the lime wedge in it with a black thin straw stick.

Sam clinked his glass to hers and took a sip, looking around and surveying the noisy and dim bar.

Ruby turned back to him after chuckling at the crowd of square dancers and line dancers riling up a storm on the dance floor to the music bops.

"You want to know more about me and the plague times?"

Sam nodded, "Might as well try to learn something useful that could help Sam out when he, you know, and goes to Hell."

"What do you want to know?"

Sam shrugged, "Maybe for starters, what were times like back then? Observations? What did you think of the times?"

Ruby laughed, "You're not really one for words are you Sammy boy."

Sam shrugged again.

"Okay… Well I thought the plague sucked. Everyone there back then did… What else is there to say? I observed a plague? I was just living my life I don't really know what to say.

Alright so I wasn't from the wealthiest of families, my mom was more akin to a scullery maid if you asked our neighbors back then.

I grew up poor, by the time I was grown, I had to do some bad things to get out of a desperate situation.

I mean think about it, poor in the freaking plague times… Can't get much worse than that.

So yeah what if I got into some witch craft and became what one might have called… a witch, don't get all Crucible on me Sam."

Sam smirked, "You're not much for words either are you, at least when it comes to talking about yourself."

Ruby punched him in the arm, a drunk stagger to her.

"Enough about me, let's get out of here."

Sam nodded and paid for their drinks after having ordered multiple rounds for them.

They got to a motel nearby, and Sam stuck the red plastic key chained inn key into a scratched up old lock and swung the door open, holding it for Ruby.

"Uh, it saves money to share a room, it's what Dean and I always do. Don't get any funny ideas though."

Ruby cackled, "I should say the same to you weirdo."

Sam awkwardly stood by the wall and watched as Ruby plopped down on the twin bed closest to the bathroom and seemed to fall asleep almost instantly after falling into a fit of giggles.

Sam breathed out a sigh of relief and let the tension out of his shoulders before taking his shoes off and shuffling over to the bed on the opposite wall of the room.

Stained old carpeting gave way under his feet and soon he was laying down on a springy old mattress, headed off to sleep.
