Chapter 53: Tower VI
Adam returned to Wilt's cargo hold, where the iridescent crustaceans from Io lay dormant in the stasis field of his containment unit. He released the field, examining his catch with critical precision. The specimens were pristine—perfect examples of the purple-shelled variety that thrived near the moon's sulfur lakes. Their carapaces shifted colors in the ship's lighting, displaying shimmering patterns that no Earth creature could match.
With practiced efficiency, he retrieved a compact field kit from one of Wilt's many hidden compartments. It unfolded into a surprisingly complete culinary workstation, revealing tools and spices gathered from across the solar system during centuries of solitary expeditions.
"Beginning preparation," he stated, ostensibly to himself, though Blush hovered nearby, recording the process as she had countless times before.
His movements were methodical as he separated the crustaceans by size, selecting the largest for immediate preparation. With a specially designed knife—its edge honed from materials harvested from Venus—he deftly removed the inedible portions, setting aside certain shell components that could be processed later for ammunition coating.
"Sulfur content is higher than usual," he observed, his enhanced senses detecting subtle chemical variations. "Likely due to the recent tectonic activity near the feeding grounds."
From his collection of spices, Adam selected several that would complement the mineral richness of the meat—dried herbs from Earth's wilds, crystallized nectars from Nessus, and a pinch of a rare powder that glowed faintly blue in the shadows. The mixture was his own creation, perfected over centuries of solitary meals.
He arranged the crustaceans in a specialized cooking vessel—a salvaged Golden Age device that maintained precise temperature control. As the meat began to cook, releasing complex aromas that filled the cargo hold, Adam's expression remained impassive despite the satisfaction he clearly took in the process.
"The new Guardians reacted as expected to reunion with their former teammates," he told Blush, continuing his habit of documentation. "Emotional intensity high, but within anticipated parameters. No signs of Light instability due to resurfaced memories."
The meat turned from translucent to pearly white as it cooked, absorbing the spices that enhanced its natural flavors. Adam monitored the process with the same focus he brought to combat, turning each piece at precisely the right moment for optimal results.
When the preparation was complete, he arranged the crustaceans on a serving platter designed to maintain temperature, covering it with a fitted lid that trapped both heat and aroma. The entire process had taken less than thirty minutes—efficiency born of centuries of practice.
"Ruby will need this after her extended rest," he stated, a hint of concern permeating his typically neutral tone as he secured the remaining uncooked specimens in the stasis field. "She hasn't slept this long in decades."
With the platter ready, Adam activated his personal transmat device—a rare privilege granted to few Guardians, but one he had earned through centuries of service. The familiar energy field enveloped him as Wilt's systems locked onto Ruby and Oscar's quarters in the Tower.
The rich aroma of spices and seared meat gradually penetrated Ruby's consciousness, pulling her from the depths of dreamless sleep. Her silver eyes opened slowly, taking a moment to focus on her surroundings. She was still curled against Oscar's shoulder, the warmth and solidity of his presence a familiar comfort after countless years.
"Mmm, is that..." she murmured, her voice still husky from sleep as she lifted her head, "Adam's space crabs? Man, I'd know that smell anywhere."
"Adam's specialty," Oscar confirmed with a small smile.
As if summoned by their conversation, a soft hum of transmat energy filled the living area. Adam materialized near the kitchen counter, a covered serving platter in his hands. Steam escaped from beneath the lid, carrying the complex scent of alien spices and perfectly cooked crustacean meat.
"Hey there, chef," Ruby called out with a lazy smile. "Perfect timing as usual."
"You're finally awake," Adam replied, the faintest trace of relief evident only to those who had known him for centuries. He set the platter on the dining table, his movements precise yet comfortable in this familiar space. "Thought you might be hungry."
Ruby stretched, rolling her shoulders as she gradually returned to full awareness. She glanced toward the chronometer on the wall, her eyes widening slightly. "Wow, fourteen hours? Pretty sure that's a new record, even for me."
"And needed every minute of it," Oscar said, his hand gently squeezing her shoulder. "You've been running on borrowed time since long before Mars."
Adam removed the lid from the platter, revealing a carefully arranged display of the iridescent Io crustaceans. They had been expertly prepared—shells cracked just so to allow easy access to the meat within, seasoned with herbs that he had likely gathered himself during countless expeditions to the Jovian moon.
Ruby's nose wrinkled slightly as she inhaled the aroma. "Purple shells this time, huh? You really love those sulfur lakes, don't you?"
"They were abundant near the sulfur lakes," Adam replied, retrieving three plates from a cabinet with the familiarity of someone who had visited these quarters often over the centuries. "The volcanic activity has shifted the mineral content. Changes the flavor." He paused, adding with the slightest upward curve of his lips, "Got the spice blend right this time. You complained the last batch was too bitter."
Ruby untangled herself from Oscar's side and padded on bare feet toward the table, running a hand through her tousled hair. Despite her disheveled appearance, there was something lighter about her movements—as if a weight that had been pressing down on her for centuries had finally begun to ease.
"So," she said, taking a seat at the table, "what's the gossip on our new Guardians? Asher sent a message with his usual dramatic flair about 'physics-defying Light manifestations' or something."
Adam and Oscar exchanged a brief glance—a subtle communication born of centuries fighting alongside one another.
"They're adapting quickly," Adam said carefully, transferring portions of the crustacean to each plate with precise movements. "Unusual Light manifestations, definitely. The female channels Arc energy but forms it into Solar-like constructs. The male uses Void with precision that shouldn't be possible for a new Guardian." He hesitated, then added, "Reminds me of our first century. Before standardized training protocols."
Oscar accepted his plate with a nod of thanks. "They've already met your team. The Tower is quite intrigued by their arrival."
Ruby's expression grew thoughtful as she picked up one of the shell segments, examining the iridescent meat within. "More unusual Guardians right after my team shows up? That's definitely not a coincidence. The Traveler's up to something."
"Significant," Adam finished for her. "Yes. We were just discussing that before you woke."
"The Traveler's awakening after the Red War has changed the flow of Light throughout the system," Oscar explained, his ancient eyes meeting Ruby's. "Ozpin and Blush both sense it. There's a purpose to these resurrections, though what that purpose might be remains unclear."
Ruby tasted the crustacean meat, savoring the complex flavors—sweet and rich with hints of mineral and smoke that no Earth-bound seafood could match. Adam watched with that subtle intensity that had characterized him for centuries, awaiting her verdict on his preparation.
"Damn, Adam, you've outdone yourself," she said with genuine appreciation, licking her fingers. "Seriously, best batch in long time."
Adam inclined his head in acknowledgment, but those who knew him best might notice the slight relaxation around his eyes—the Adam equivalent of preening at the compliment.
"So..." Ruby continued, glancing between her two oldest companions, "my team knows now. Everything. Dark Age, Moroznyy Kray, the Iron Lords..." Her voice caught slightly. "The Moon."
Oscar's hand found hers across the table, a gentle pressure conveying understanding only possible between those who had lived as long as they had. "How did they respond?"
"Way better than I expected," Ruby admitted, her gaze dropping to where her finger traced patterns in the condensation on her water glass. "They didn't freak out or look at me differently. Even when I told them about the Moon disaster. About all those Guardians who died their final deaths because of my call."
"Your team always saw the best in you," Adam observed, his own plate untouched as he monitored the conversation. "Always did. Even on Remnant."
Ruby's silver eyes lifted to meet his pale blue ones. "They asked about you too. I told them about finding you in the tundra. About Kray."
Something flickered across Adam's features—surprise, perhaps, or an echo of those ancient memories. "You told them about Kray?" he asked, using the familiar shorthand that only their original fireteam ever used for Moroznyy Kray.
"They deserve to know our history," Ruby said with quiet certainty. "All of it, good and bad. I mean, how else can they get why we are the way we are now?"
Oscar nodded slowly. "And how do you feel now, having shared those burdens?"
Ruby considered this, a hint of wonder crossing her features. "Lighter," she admitted. "Like I've been carrying this massive weight for so long I forgot what it was like without it." A genuine smile touched her lips—one that neither man had seen often in recent decades. "It's... it's actually really nice."
"You should eat," Adam said, gesturing to her plate. "Gets cold fast. Loses the flavor."
Ruby's smile widened into something closer to her younger self—the glimpse of an expression that had been exceedingly rare in recent centuries. "Still fussing over food temperature after seven hundred years? Some things never change with you, Adam."
"Some habits are worth keeping," Adam replied, allowing himself the small indulgence of a genuine half-smile before turning his attention to his own plate.
As they ate, Ruby's demeanor continued to shift—subtle changes in her posture, her expressions, even her voice—as if the unburdening of her centuries-old secrets had begun a transformation. It wasn't a return to who she had been on Remnant; too much had happened, too much had been lived and lost for that. But perhaps it was an integration—the ancient Guardian finding a way to reconcile with the young Huntress she had once been.
"I should probably meet these new Guardians soon," Ruby said finally, setting down the shell of her last crustacean. "And check on my team." She looked between Oscar and Adam, her two oldest companions across centuries of war and peace. "You guys coming with me?"
"Always," Oscar replied without hesitation, the single word carrying the weight of promises kept across impossible odds.
"Of course," Adam said simply, but the immediate response held none of his usual hesitation when asked to attend social gatherings. When it came to Team ROJA, his answer had always been the same for centuries.
Ruby rose from the table, her bare feet silent against the floor as she moved toward the bedroom. "Lemme get dressed then. Can't meet new Guardians looking like I just rolled out of bed." She paused at the threshold, looking back at them with a lopsided smile. "Thanks. Both of you. For always having my back, even when I was being a stubborn idiot."
After she disappeared into the bedroom, Oscar and Adam exchanged a glance that spoke volumes—relief, understanding, and anticipation of Ruby's reaction when she discovered exactly who these new Guardians were.
"She doesn't know," Oscar said quietly, his ancient eyes thoughtful. "About Ren and Nora."
"No," Adam confirmed, gathering the plates with practiced efficiency. "Thought it better she experience it firsthand."
A rare hint of warmth touched Adam's typically impassive features. "She deserves this. After everything." The simple statement contained more emotion than most would ever hear from him.
Oscar nodded, understanding in his expression. "Whatever the Traveler intends by bringing them all back now..."
"We'll face it together," Adam finished, the rare use of the plural speaking to centuries of partnership. "As we always have."
Outside the windows of their Tower quarters, the Traveler hung serenely in the sky above the Last City, its enigmatic presence a constant reminder of both the Light that had given them all second lives and the mysteries that still lay ahead.
Ruby emerged from the bedroom transformed from her sleep-rumpled state. She wore her customary Guardian attire—a sleek, battle-worn outfit in black and crimson with silver accents that complemented her eyes. The familiar deep red cloak draped from her shoulders, its hem showing signs of countless repairs despite being meticulously maintained. Around her neck, Oscar's Iron Lord tree pendant rested against her collarbone, a constant reminder of promises kept across centuries.
"That's better," she declared with a quick grin, adjusting the pendant with an unconscious gesture that both men recognized—a habit formed over centuries whenever she faced something important.
Oscar stood, his ancient eyes taking in her appearance with quiet appreciation. "Ready to face the Tower and its newest additions?"
"As ready as I'll ever be," Ruby replied with a casual shrug. "Though I gotta admit I'm curious about these weird Light tricks Adam mentioned."
Adam had already cleaned away the remains of their meal with his characteristic efficiency. "The timing of their arrival immediately following the Mars incident suggests a pattern. One the Vanguard will undoubtedly wish to analyze."
"Let's not get all strategic and analytical just yet," Ruby said, moving toward the door. "For once, I just want to meet some new Guardians without trying to figure out their tactical value. Baby steps, right?"
Oscar exchanged a subtle glance with Adam, both warriors concealing the anticipation of Ruby's reaction when she discovered exactly who these new Guardians were.
The three veteran Guardians made their way through the Tower corridors, their presence drawing respectful nods from newer Guardians and civilians alike. Centuries of service had created an aura around them that went beyond their physical appearance—a weight of experience and achievement that was almost palpable.
Adam walked slightly behind Ruby and Oscar, his posture still rigid and alert, but there was a subtle difference in how he carried himself when with just the two of them—a minute relaxation that would be imperceptible to anyone who hadn't fought alongside him for centuries.
They entered the main courtyard, a wide open space bathed in mid-morning sunlight where Guardians gathered to receive missions, exchange information, and socialize between operations. The area was busier than usual, with small groups of Guardians clustered around the various vendors and gathering points, many casting curious glances toward one particular group near the Tower's edge.
Weiss spotted them first, her white Warlock robes distinctive against the backdrop of the Last City beyond. She raised a hand in greeting, saying something to Yang and Blake that caused all three to turn toward the new arrivals.
Ruby's pace quickened slightly, a small but genuine smile forming as she approached her team. "Hey guys!" she called out with a wave. "Heard you've already met the new—"
The words died in her throat as she caught sight of the gathering beyond her teammates. There, caught mid-gesture while apparently explaining something with characteristic enthusiasm, stood a figure with bright orange hair. Beside her, a slender man with long dark hair tied neatly back, his composed demeanor a stark contrast to his companion's energy.
Ruby stopped dead in her tracks, silver eyes widening in shock. Her hand instinctively reached for the pendant at her throat, clutching it as if for support.
"Ren? Nora?" The names escaped as barely a whisper, disbelief rendering her voice almost inaudible.
But somehow—perhaps through some connection that transcended death and resurrection—Nora heard. She turned, her animated explanation to Pyrrha cutting off mid-sentence as her turquoise eyes landed on Ruby.
For a heartbeat, the entire courtyard seemed to freeze, the background noise fading as the two women stared at each other across the space.
"RUBY!" Nora's shout shattered the moment, her voice carrying the same unbridled enthusiasm it had at Beacon. Without hesitation, she launched herself across the courtyard, moving with the enhanced speed of a Guardian empowered by the Light.
Before Ruby could properly react, she found herself engulfed in a bone-crushing hug that lifted her clear off the ground. "IT'S REALLY YOU! LOOK AT YOU! YOU'RE ALL GROWN UP AND SERIOUS-LOOKING EXCEPT YOU'RE NOT REALLY GROWN UP BECAUSE GUARDIANS DON'T AGE BUT YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!"
Ren approached at a more measured pace, his calm presence a familiar counterpoint to Nora's exuberance. He stopped a respectful distance away, studying Ruby with those perceptive eyes that seemed to see beyond surface appearances.
"Hello, Ruby," he said simply, his voice carrying the weight of recognition. "It's good to see you again."
Unlike the distant, controlled Ruby of recent centuries, she didn't hesitate. She wrapped her arms around Nora, returning the hug with equal fervor.
"Oh my god, NORA!" Ruby laughed, the sound bright and unrestrained. "You're actually here! And Ren too!"
When Nora finally set her down, Ruby grabbed Ren's arm and pulled him into the hug as well, a gesture that would have shocked anyone who knew only the reserved commander she had been for so long.
"How...?" she began, then shook her head with another laugh. "When...?"
"Two days ago!" Nora supplied cheerfully. "I woke up on Io with this cute little Ghost named Spark, and everything was all strange and alien and AMAZING, and then Ren showed up because of course he did, and then we fought these weird shadow monsters called Taken, and this grumpy science guy with a robot arm sent a message, and then Jaune and Pyrrha and Oscar showed up on this cool ship, and Adam was there too which was SUPER weird at first but he's not all murder-y anymore which is nice, and then we came here and met your team, and now YOU'RE here and it's like a big reunion party except in SPACE!"
She delivered this entire recitation without appearing to take a breath, her enthusiasm undiminished by death and resurrection.
Ruby looked past Nora to Ren, her silver eyes sparkling with genuine joy. "She hasn't changed a bit, has she?"
"Not in the slightest," Ren acknowledged with that same subtle smile. "Though she has developed a concerning ability to channel lightning now."
"Oh, you should see what I can do with my scythe these days," Ruby replied with a mischievous grin. "We'll have to spar sometime."
Gradually, Ruby's shock began to recede, replaced by something that resembled pure joy. She looked around at the gathered group—her original teammates from Remnant, Team JNPR now reunited, Oscar and Adam standing as silent witnesses to this moment of convergence.
"You knew," she said, turning to Adam with narrowed eyes, though her tone was playful rather than accusatory. "When you brought the crustaceans—you sneaky jerk, you deliberately didn't tell me it was them!"
Adam's expression remained controlled, but those who knew him best could detect the subtle crinkle at the corner of his visible eye—the closest he came to mischief. "Would you have preferred advance notice?" he asked, his tone marginally lighter than his usual clipped delivery.
For a moment, Ruby seemed poised between indignation and gratitude. Then, unexpectedly, she laughed again—a sound so genuine and unburdened that several nearby Guardians turned in surprise, unaccustomed to hearing such uninhibited mirth from the legendary warrior.
"Nah," she admitted, her silver eyes bright with happiness. "This was way better. Best surprise in centuries!"
Jaune approached, his tall form unmistakable as he joined the circle. "Welcome back to the land of the living," he said to Ruby, the phrase carrying layers of meaning between two Guardians who had walked the centuries together. "Feeling better?"
Ruby nodded, a weight visibly lifted from her shoulders. "So much better. Like I've been walking around with rocks in my pockets for centuries and finally dumped them out." She glanced between Ren and Nora, shaking her head with a grin. "And now these two show up! Talk about perfect timing."
"It's destiny!" Nora declared, bouncing slightly on her toes. "Team JNPR and Team RWBY, together again across death and time and space! Isn't it AMAZING?"
"It's certainly statistically improbable," Weiss commented, though her usual precision was softened by clear happiness at the reunion unfolding before her.
"I'm beginning to think probability doesn't apply where the Traveler is concerned," Blake added thoughtfully.
Pyrrha, who had been observing the reunion with quiet joy, stepped forward. "I've been showing Ren and Nora around the Tower," she explained to Ruby. "They're adapting remarkably well, all things considered."
"This place is AWESOME!" Nora enthused, gesturing expansively at the Tower around them. "There are robots and aliens and cool weapons and PANCAKES! Did you know they have pancakes here? With actual maple syrup? In the FUTURE?"
"She's been particularly pleased with the culinary options," Ren translated dryly.
"Oh man, wait until you try the ramen place in the west district," Ruby said with genuine enthusiasm. "They do this spicy miso thing that would make you cry back on Remnant."
Yang moved closer to Ruby, bumping her shoulder gently. "Look at you," she said with a warm smile. "I've gotta say, sis, it's really nice to see you like this."
"Like what?" Ruby asked, though her smile suggested she knew exactly what Yang meant.
"Like this," Yang gestured to all of her. "Happy. Relaxed. Making jokes. Calling me 'sis' again. You've been so formal and distant since we got here. It's like you finally remembered how to be Ruby again, not just the legendary Guardian commander."
Ruby's expression softened. "Yeah, well... turns out carrying around seven centuries of secrets was kind of a downer," she admitted. "Feels good to just... be me again. All of me."
Yang wrapped an arm around her shoulders and squeezed. "I'm glad. I missed my little sister."
Ruby's gaze moved from face to face, each one representing a connection that had somehow survived across the ultimate boundary. Her team, whom she had avoided for months after their resurrection, now stood beside her with new understanding. Jaune and Oscar, who had walked the centuries with her through countless battles. Pyrrha, restored to them after her tragic death on Remnant. Adam, whose long journey from enemy to ally spanned epochs. And now Ren and Nora, newly awakened yet immediately finding their place in this strange confluence of past and present.
"Hey, you know what?" Ruby said, her voice filled with an energy that had been absent for longer than anyone could remember. "We should hit the City tonight. There's this amazing place in the old district that serves the best skewers you've ever had. Consider it my official 'welcome back from the dead' party for all of you."
Oscar moved to stand beside her, his ancient eyes reflecting the same quiet wonder that characterized Ruby's expression. "Perhaps the Gardens first? It's quieter there, and the cherry trees are in bloom."
"Perfect," Ruby agreed, her silver eyes bright as she looked around at her gathered friends. "We've got a ton of stories to catch up on, and I want to hear all about how you guys woke up."
As the group began moving toward the Tower Gardens, Adam fell into step alongside Jaune and Oscar, allowing the newly reunited friends to lead the way. Though his posture remained rigid and his expression controlled, there was a subtle difference in how he carried himself—a fractional lowering of the walls he maintained around all others.
"Been a long time since I've seen her like this," he said quietly, his words meant only for his oldest comrades.
"Too long," Jaune agreed.
Above them, the Traveler hung in the clear sky, its enigmatic presence watching over this gathering of souls it had called back from death—some recently, some long ago—all brought together in this moment for reasons none of them fully understood.
Whatever lay ahead, whatever purpose the Traveler had in reassembling these specific individuals across time and space, they would face it together. Not as separate teams, not as disconnected individuals carrying their burdens alone, but as a unified force built on bonds that had proven stronger than death itself.
For the first time in centuries, Ruby Rose walked with a lightness in her step that had nothing to do with her Hunter's agility and everything to do with the people walking beside her.
