Break It
Chapter Three
Genma gritted his teeth as he flew down the cliff. Moments earlier he had seen a glimpse of an outstretched hand, a flare of dark hair, before she disappeared past the edge. He knew he would be too late. But it was his duty not to turn his eyes from evil when it grazed the face of the world.
He landed lightly, chakra giving his sandals stable purchase on the slippery stone. She had smacked right into the largest rock, a flat and nearly smooth monstrosity that jutted out of the sea like a tooth. Splatters of blood marred the surface where she had tumbled down, almost bouncing with impact, rolled and and finally came to a rest with half her body submerged in the sea. Blood leaked from the gash in her thigh, turning the water around her red.
He did not think she could be alive. How could any civilian survive that fall?
Genma hopped down, balancing on two small stones, and bent down to pull her up. Something electric snapped at his fingers and he snatched his hand back, sucking air in through his teeth.
There was a soft shimmer of chakra around the girl. He hadn't noticed it over the shifting waves. The chakra itself did not seem entirely stable, and shimmered like a heat haze over water. He stood there and contemplated it, wondering what to do.
He was still standing when Raidou poked his head over the edge of the cliff. "Oi, Genma!"
He didn't bother looking up, just called them down with a finger.
"Is she dead?" Chouza asked, landing beside him. Raidou appeared next and after a beat silently reached down to pull the girl up.
"Wait." Genma grabbed his arm and nodded his head at the barrier.
"What in the…" Raidou peered at it, stepping back. "What is that? What happens if you touch it?"
Genma shrugged. "Just a small zap."
Chouza made a low rumbling sound. "My…" His eyes seemed to be gazing at something far away. "Could it be?"
Chouza bent over and touched the barrier briefly. It sparked and he withdrew his hand.
"Should we break it with force?" Raidou asked.
"No," Chouza said. "Stand back, just in case." He made a series of hand signs and murmured a chant too soft for the others to make out. He brought two fingers to the barrier. It wobbled around his fingers, then surged. He chanted faster, his tone still low and steady, words blending into each other. The barrier seemed to wobble, then dissolved into the air without a trace.
Chouza bent over and hesitated. He reached out and picked the girl up gently, making sure to stabilize her neck against his arm. Icy water mixed with blood dripped onto his clothes, but he did not seem to notice. A finger on the side of her neck confirmed she still had a pulse.
"Come on," he said, leaping back up the cliff.
