Angelica Pickles saw Susie Carmichael that one Sunday morning. Tommy and his friends weren't around, but they were able to talk.
"Hi, Angelica," Susie greeted her.
"Hi, Susie. Did you come to see me?"
"Yes, Angelica."
"About what?"
"You, of course."
"What about me do you have to say?" Angelica asked.
"About Tommy and his friends," Susie told her.
"I'm listening," Angelica replied.
Susie could be wrong if she took a guess, so Angelica let her go first.
"My guess is, Angelica, why are you so jealous about Tommy and his friends?"
"Because I don't have any friends of my own, but the others don't count."
"They do want you to be friends with them."
"They don't show it very much, Susie."
"But you always chose not to be friendly with them, Angelica. You can't change that."
"Do you think I can try to work on that?" Angelica asked her.
"That's up to you, Angelica. You're not doing a very good job at trying to be friendly. Maybe that's why you don't have many friends of your own that doesn't involve Tommy."
"You can help with that, can't you, Susie?"
"No, Angelica," Susie replied.
"That means I have to do it without helping me?"
"You're exactly right, Angelica. If you really want your own friends, try to be nice for once."
"Would that work?"
"You'll figure it out, Angelica. I know nobody will help you figure it out, and that includes Tommy."
Angelica saw that Susie had a very good point.
"I guess you're right, Susie."
Angelica remembered it was Susie who was pretty popular and smart at school while she isn't. Busy being a bully, is what Angelica knows best, and is good at it. Now all Angelica wants is for a change so other kids would want to be friends with her.
"But, Susie, it's hard being nice to other kids."
"No, it's not, Angelica."
"You have a lot of friends at school. I heard that you might have as boyfriend."
"Where did you hear that, Angelica?"
"From one of the boys in a grade before us is thinking about asking you."
This didn't surprise Susie.
"You're not that popular, Angelica. You wouldn't have a boyfriend anytime soon. You'll get one if you start trying to be nice."
"Mommy and Daddy never tell me anything like that. Is that all we have to talk about?"
"Yes, it is. All you have to figure out when you see somebody who would want to be your friend."
"Does that include Tommy and his friends?" she asked.
"No, but it's a good start," Susie answered.
"They've known me for a long time, Susie. Don't you think if I start being nice to them is hard to do?"
"No, Angelica. It doesn't work that way, but if you really want people to be your friend, now is a good place to start."
"When I do start?" Angelica asked.
"Whenever you see Tommy and his friends. A good start for you is to apologize."
"They already know by now that's not going to happen anytime soon. Try again, Susie."
"I'm not helping you on this, Angelica. You're on your own for this one."
What she said was true.
All Angelica already knew is that Tommy and his friends had their own plans today that doesn't have anything to do with her, and she was fine with that. What could Angelica do to start being nice to people? From what Susie just told her, it would take up a lot of time if she choses to change herself the other way around.
So today wouldn't be a good time for Angelica to start, but she was fine with that. Angelica hadn't heard anything on what Tommy's plans were today. Today was only Sunday, so there's no telling what they chose to do since they decided it to be in town instead of at home.
"Did you ever think about having a boyfriend?" Angelica asked.
"No, but I am not expecting to have one quite yet. How about you, Angelica?"
"Not really. We do need them at some point."
"You're exactly right, Angelica. Having a boyfriend isn't for everyone."
"I know that."
It was only a conversation.
"Do you plan to get jealous if I have a boyfriend before you do, Angelica?"
"I don't, Susie. Go ahead and find the perfect boyfriend who knows that you are his type."
"Did you hear what the name is, Angelica?"
"No, but you'll figure that out on your own since you're smart."
Susie didn't reply, and there was no reason to be jealous of not having a boyfriend.
"I guess you're right, Angelica. I'll figure him out."
Angelica was having her first sleepover at Susie's. She'd asked to go, as she had some feeling she had to tell Susie, and only her, for now, at least. Drew dropped her off, Randy taking her overnight bag.
"Have a good time, princess."
"Okay, Daddy."
"Hi, Angelica."
"Hi."
"Buster and Edwin want to play with me, wanna join?"
"Wow, really?"
"Yeah."
Angelica agreed, and soon, she was having some fun with Susie and the boys, even if Edwin's scientific talk went over her head.
"You get used to it," Susie said, giggling.
After dinner, fish, which Angelica found she liked, to her surprise, and an hour of Cynthia PI, and some blueberry muffins, two each from one pack, thanks to Edwin, it was bedtime.
Angelica figured it was now or never as soon as they were tucked in.
"Susie?"
"Hmm?"
"I wanted to come cuz I've got something to tell you and no one else, not yet."
"Angelica, you can tell me anything."
"You won't laugh?"
"Promise."
"Okay. The reason I'm jealous of the babies is, I'm jealous. Their mommies and daddies are around a lot, and mine aren't, and-"
She couldn't go on, and started to cry. Susie could tell, although the blonde could fake cry, this was real. Using some tissues, she wiped away the tears.
"Shh. It's okay."
"No, it's not. I do care about them, but it's like there's part of me that stops me from showing it."
"I can help you show them the real you."
"You'd do that."
"Of course. Besides, you're like the baby sister I never had."
"You mean it?"
"Yup."
To answer Angelica even further, Susie gently began rocking the younger girl, even softly singing to her, something Angelica found soothing. Soon, she began feeling drowsy. Before she fell asleep, she mouthed, "Thank you."
Next morning, Drew arrived after breakfast.
"Have fun, princess?"
"I sure did. Susie even helped me when I couldn't sleep, and her big brothers are pretty fun."
"Great. Maybe you can do it again."
"I think I'd like that."
Before leaving she thanked Susie for everything. Overcoming her jealous side wouldn't be easy, and it would take time, but if Susie was willing to make the effort, she had to do the same.
