Yusei tilted his head at a helicopter in the distance as they became aware of sirens becoming audible.
"Time to lose all this attention, I think." Yusei leaned the D-Wheel over to an off-ramp, beating a group of police trying to cut him off. Rather than even trying to get away at the bottom, he rode up the side of the barrier and launched them onto a rooftop, sending Yuzu and all three of her counterparts, even Rin, screaming.
From there, he jumped into an opening through an old building and they swerved through the ruins. As Yusei drove down a straight path, a notification chirped on his D-Wheel computer.
"Someone's forcing me into a duel."
"Who's crazy enough to follow us here?" Yuzu shouted, when a police D-Wheel shot out of a staircase into view. Yuzu got a glimpse of the rider under his vizor: a burly tan man with a scar on his cheek.
"Is that you, Ushio?" Yusei called. "How have you been, you son of a gun?"
"Don't try that with me, Yusei!" Ushio shouted back. "You attacked officers! It's too much this time!"
Yusei tsk'd as his D-Wheel was forced into duel mode.
"FIELD SPELL: CROSSOVER ACCEL."
Yusei tapped the screen and activated a field spell of his own. Yuzu was seized by a sudden thought, having been suspicious after everything that had been happening to her: if Yusei was with the Dimension Duelists, could he activate Battle Dome in a Riding Duel?
"FIELD SPELL: SPEED WORLD - STREET RACE."
"Street Racing?" Yuzu asked.
"Riding Duel Acceleration!" Yusei and Ushio shouted together.
"I'll go first, then," Ushio said, darting into the lead and grabbing an action card. "First I set a monster! Then I set two cards and end my turn!"
"Draw!" Yusei announced. "I Special Summon Junk Forward!" A warrior in white aerodynamic armor began floating alongside the duel. "I Normal Summon Drill Synchron!" Drill Synchron was a spherical monster with drills for hands and tank tracks for feet. "Level 3 Drill Synchron tunes Level 3 Junk Forward!
Scared Spear that scorches the starry sky! Unleash your soul and awaken the world! Synchro Summon! Level 6, Stardust Assault Warrior!"
Appearing now was a warrior in silver-white armor with piledrivers attached to his arms.
"I use the effect of Stardust Assault Warrior to Special Summon Junk Forward back from my graveyard!" Junk Forward reappeared with 1500 DEF. "Then, I also set two cards. Battle! Assault Warrior attacks your set monster! Then you'll take piercing damage! Shooting Driver!"
Ushio's monster was revealed, a doberman in armor with machine guns strapped to it. Assault Dog's 800 DEF points were no match for Assault Warrior's 2100 ATK, and he dashed forward and disintegrated it. Ushio grunted as his life points decreased to 2700. Yusei pulled into the lead, grabbing an action card of his own.
"Straight to the point, I see, but Assault Dog's effect allows me to summon two more from my deck!" Two more dogs appeared running alongside Ushio, both in attack position with 1200 ATK, as he drew for his next turn.
"I summon Jutte Fighter!"
Yuzu recognized the small, cartoony man smirking behind his glasses and brandishing a jutte weapon.
"Level 2 Jutte Fighter tunes level 4 Assault Dog!" Ushio declared.
"Synchro Summon! With the power of authority, emerge and pursue, level 6 Goyo Guardian!"
He summoned a monster resembling a man in a feudal-era police uniform, with Kabuki face paint. An attack value of 2800 flashed on Yusei's vizor.
"Battle! Goyo Guardian attacks Assault Warrior! Goyo Lariat!" Goyo Guardian whipped his jutte around and hurled it at Assault Warrior.
"I activate Scrap-Iron Scarecrow to negate the attack!" Yusei shouted.
"I chain Wiretap!" Ushio retorted. "I negate your trap and shuffle it back into your deck! Goyo Guardian's attack continues!"
Yuzu hunched over and Yusei gritted his teeth as his life points dropped to 3300. The rope of Goyo Guardian's weapon wrapped around Assault Warrior and dragged him over to Ushio's field.
"And now that Goyo Guardian's destroyed your monster, I can Special Summon it in defense mode!" Ushio told him. "I end my turn."
"I thought you'd try that!" Yusei retorted. Yuzu noticed him watching a third icon light up in green on his dash below the two previously there.
"I activate the quick-play, Dash Pilfer! I can take control of one monster you control until the end phase, so I'll be taking back my Assault Warrior! Now I Normal Summon Road Synchron!"
He summoned a gold-armored figure sitting on a pair of wheels in place of legs.
"If Road Synchron isn't tuned to Synchro Summon Road Warrior, his level is treated as 2! Level 2 Road Synchron tunes level 6 Stardust Assault Warrior!
Flashing ray that tears through the sea of stars! Roar throughout the world and shake our souls! Synchro Summon! Soar, level 8 Stardust Spark Dragon!"
A silver dragon spread a pair of tattered wings, roaring into the sky before gliding alongside Yusei's D-Wheel.
"I also switch Junk Forward to attack mode!" Yusei announced. He skidded his D-Wheel sideways and threw his hand out. "Battle! Spark Dragon attacks Goyo Guardian!" The dragon swooped forward, curled in the air and dove at Goyo Guardian. "Shooting Assault!" Yusei shouted as Stardust's 2500 ATK clashed with Guardian's 2800. "I activate Spark Dragon's effect! By targeting themselves, they prevent themselves from being destroyed! Sonic Barrier!" Yusei's D-Wheel swayed as his life points decreased further to 3000. "I activate my trap: Synchro Ring! Stardust can attack again, and their attack points double!" Stardust's ATK shot up to 5000 points and they launched another attack, this time incinerating Goyo Guardian. Ushio gritted his teeth as his life points dropped to 500 and his D-Wheel nearly spun out of control.
"I activate the action spell, Zero Penalty!" Yusei continued. "I target your remaining Assault Dog and reduce its attack points to 0!"
"No, no!" Ushio shouted. Junk Forward darted from side to side, dodging the dog's bursts of gunfire as it tried to defend itself, and with a kick, sent it flying back into Ushio. He screamed as steam burst from his D-Wheel's engine and he dropped back, out of sight.
Yuzu allowed herself to relax for a moment and tried Yuya on her duel disk again. She still couldn't get a call through, but she did get a signal from him… and she realized it was getting closer. As Yusei emerged back out under the night sky, Yuzu saw another D-Wheel approaching.
"Yuya!"
He pulled alongside them as Yuzu called to him in relief.
"Yuya, I nearly got attacked by the police!"
"I know. I found out after my duel with Yuma was interrupted," he replied.
"The force is full of crooked cops, easily paid off by anyone who wants to," Yusei muttered.
"Thanks for helping her-" Yuya started to say, and was cut off by Yusei's D-Wheel.
"FIELD SPELL: SPEED WORLD - STREET RACE."
Yuya saw Crossover Accel activating automatically.
"Hang on, Yusei!" Yuzu shouted. "That's my… he's with me!"
"I know," Yusei replied, and stared at Yuya out of the corner of his eye. "I'll let Yuzu off… as soon as you beat me."
Yuya wasn't prepared for the sudden challenge and Yusei was easily able to pull ahead.
"Yuya, this isn't an ordinary Riding Duel!" Yugo told him urgently. When Yuya drew his hand, he found it full of Speedroid cards.
"Did you save me just to get Yuya to duel?" Yuzu scowled. "What's going on - are you really working for the Dimension Duelists?"
"'For' them?" Yusei replied, refusing to look back at her. "Let's just say… I owe them a favor."
"I take the first turn!" he shouted. "I summon Junk Changer! When this card is summoned, I can change the level of a Junk monster I control to one higher or lower! Use the effect to change Junk Changer's level from 3 to 4!" As Junk Changer's level rose, Yusei grabbed another card. "I can Special Summon Junk Servant when I control another Junk monster! Level 4 Changer tunes level 4 Servant!

Stardust swooped next to Yusei as he continued,
"I set two cards. I end my turn!"
"Draw!" Yuya shouted. "Since I control no monsters, I Special Summon Speedroid Terrortop!" A line of bladed, orange spinning tops snaked out ahead of him.
"I can now add another Speedroid from my deck to my hand. I choose Speedroid Taketomborg. Since I control a WIND monster, I can Special Summon Taketomborg from my hand!" A bug-headed robot appeared next to Terrortop. "By tributing Taketomborg, I can Special Summon a Tuner from my deck!" Taketomborg sank into a portal and was replaced with a transforming robot. "I summon Speedroid Gum Prize, then tune level 1 Prize with level 3 Terrortop!
The thousand-faced shadow of the maze, slash through the darkness with your sharp blade! Synchro Summon! Level 4, Hi-Speedroid Puzzle!"
A dark blue and green ninja-like figure spread his arms and glided alongside the duel.
"When Gum Prize is used as Synchro material, I send the top card of my deck to the graveyard, and if it's a Speedroid monster, the Synchro Monster gains 1000 ATK! The card is…" he revealed Speedroid Skull Marbles and Yusei's vizor showed Puzzle's ATK increasing from 1300 to 2300.
"Nice hemet," Yuzu said. "Did the Dimension Duelists give you that?"
"My gear's custom!" Yusei called back.
"Battle!" Yuya shouted. "When Puzzle battles a monster, his attack points double during damage calculation!" Puzzle's ATK rose again to 4600.
"Stardust's effect targets themselves!" Yusei called. "I chain the trap Defense Draw! I negate battle damage and draw a card! Stardust protects themselves from destruction! Sonic Barrier!" Yuya accelerated and leaned over for an action card. However, when he put the card down, he just got an error message.
"You can't just throw around spells in a street duel!" Yusei called back. "You need to build up speed counters!"
"Speed counters?" Yuya looked down at his console screen and saw a green light lit up.
"Speed World - Street Race is only used by underground duel gangs," Yugo told him. "We need to wait more turns before we can use spells."
"You need three speed counters to activate quick-plays and equips," Yusei explained. "Four for other kinds."
"I set a card and end my turn," Yuya announced.
Yusei swiped up an action card of his own.
"I summon Junk Anchor!" Yusei called, and a robot made out of metallic cylinders and screws appeared. "By discarding one card, I can Special Summon another Junk monster from my graveyard and immediately Synchro Summon with it by banishing the materials!" Junk Servant returned to the field and immediately flew upward with Junk Anchor.
"Level 2 Anchor tunes Level 4 Servant!
Sacred wings that command the meteor shower! Ride the wind of souls around the world! Synchro Summon! Level 6, Stardust Charge Warrior!"
Yuzu saw a silver warrior similar to the Stardust Assault Warrior she'd seen before, except with blade-like wings extending from his body. He was also in defense position even though he only had 1300 DEF.
"When Stardust Charge Warrior is Synchro Summoned, I can draw a card. I end my turn," Yusei announced. Yuya drew another card and watched a third green marker light up.
"Yuya!" Yuzu called, "Yusei waited four turns before using action cards before!"
Yuya guessed that action cards counted as quick-plays, which would mean that Yusei was waiting to use one. On the plus side, now with three counters of his own, Yuya was free to use the card he'd found earlier.
"I activate the action spell, Wonder Chance! I target my Puzzle and he can attack twice this turn!" That freed him up to grab another, but he quickly saw that none were in reach. Yusei had certainly planned for him to attack, but it was also a risk to stand by doing nothing and it not only would waste the card he just played, but also the opportunity to defeat Stardust Spark Dragon it gave him.
"Battle! Hi-Speedroid Puzzle attacks Spark Dragon!"
As soon as Yuya declared his attack, Yusei grabbed his action card and slammed it down. "I activate Detour! I negate the effects of one of your monsters and inflict 500 damage to you!"
Yuya gritted his teeth and fought to right his D-Wheel as the effect hit him and his life points dropped to 3500. Puzzle and Stardust charged towards each other, Puzzle's ATK not changing.
The moment seemed to freeze as Yuya cursed himself for his recklessness. Puzzle would certainly be destroyed, and on Yusei's next turn he'd have a clear shot to wipe Yuya out.
What do we do? Yuya thought.
"We can still fight!" Yugo spoke out loud, Yuzu and Yusei looking back in shock as they saw him sitting on the D-Wheel. He sped forward, riding his D-Wheel up the side of the barrier and just managing to close his fingers around another action card.
"Power Crystal! Puzzle gains 800 attack points!" Puzzle's ATK rose to 3100 and he darted forwards to counterattack.
Yusei grabbed another action card. "Stardust's effect targets themselves!" Yusei shouted. "Sonic Barrier!" The barrier formed around the dragon, deflecting the attack. As Yusei's life points dropped to 3400, he activated his other action card. "Damage Draw! When I take damage, I can draw two more cards!" He glanced back again, taking in Yugo driving after him. "So, the rumors that you can switch are true."
"If Yuya's having trouble by himself," Yugo grinned. "Anyway, Stardust can only protect one monster per turn, and the Wonder Chance action card is still in effect. Hi-Speedroid Puzzle attacks Stardust Spark Dragon!"
"I activate the trap, Scrap-Iron Scarecrow!" Yusei shouted. "Your attack is negated, and Scrap-Iron Scarecrow is set again instead of going to the graveyard!"
Yugo saw that Yusei had a way to stop an attack all along, and had allowed himself to take damage to activate his card. With only a small amount of life points lost, he'd restocked his hand and his monsters were still unharmed. He set another card alongside the one he had and decided it would have to be enough.
"Draw!" Yusei announced, and their consoles each displayed the speed counter total filled fully to 4, the maximum amount.
He'll probably summon Clear Wing Synchro Dragon as soon as possible if I don't get rid of Hi-Speedroid Puzzle and win this turn, Yusei thought. The main danger are those face-down cards… is Yugo depending on the one he just set? The one Yuya set hasn't done anything all duel. But this is Yugo's own deck - he'll know exactly the best moment to use it. Or he might be waiting to set up a combo. Since there's so many possibilities, the best option is…
"I activate the normal spell, Synchro Creed! Since there are three Synchro Monsters on the field, I can draw two cards!"
"Sure you have enough yet?" Yuzu snapped, causing Yusei to give a small chuckle.
"I summon Synchron Carrier!" Yusei called. An orange and yellow robot with crane parts appeared. "On this turn, I can Normal Summon one additional Synchron monster. I Summon Synchron Explorer!" A second robot, round and red in color, floated alongside Synchron Carrier. "Explorer's effect allows me to Special Summon the Jet Synchron I discarded earlier! Level 1 Jet Synchron tunes level 2 Carrier and Explorer!
Synchro Summon! Light up the sky, level 5 Jet Warrior!"
As the gleaming black, white and gold fighter swooped down, Yusei continued:
"When Jet Warrior is Synchro Summoned, I can target one card you control and return it to the hand! I return Puzzle to your extra deck!" Yugo gasped as his monster vanished. He couldn't even use its graveyard effect.
"Jet Sycnhron's effect also activates!" Yusei went on. I add Junk Mail to my hand from my deck. I also activate Different Dimension Reincarnation, and by discarding Level Eater, I Special Summon back my banished Junk Anchor! Then, I lower Charge Warrior's level by one to Special Summon Level Eater from my graveyard. Junk Anchor can substitute for any Synchron tuner - level 2 Junk Anchor tunes level 1 Level Eater and level 5 Jet Warrior!
Gathering fighting souls will awaken the raging wicked god! Become the path its light shines upon! Synchro Summon! Obliterate, level 8 Junk Destroyer!"
Since Junk Destroyer was Synchro Summoned using two non-tuners, I target and destroy both of your set cards! Tidal Energy!" The orbs on Junk Destryer's chest glowed with energy and Yugo blanched as his Urgent Tuning and Dice Roll Battle were both revealed and destroyed. Yuzu stared in horror at Yugo's whole field being wiped out in an instant.
"Battle!" Yusei called. "Junk Destroyer attacks directly! Destroyer Fist!"
"Are you sure about that?" Yugo smirked. Yusei's eyes widened.
"When you attack directly, I can Special Summon Speedroid Menko from my hand! Then all of your monsters change to defense mode!"
"I switch Stardust Spark Dragon back to attack and end my turn," Yusei announced.
"My turn! Draw!" Yugo shouted. "I summon Speedroid Den-Den Daiko Duke! Level 3 Duke tunes level 4 Menko!
Spread your wonderful and beautiful wings, and strike down your enemies at the speed of light! Synchro Summon! Come forth, level 7 Clear Wing Synchro Dragon!"
Yusei grunted and gritted his teeth. Junk Destroyer's 2500 DEF and the dragons' ATK values were equal; he couldn't activate any monster effects to protect Charge Warrior, but his other monsters were safe. However, by the look on Yugo's face, he wasn't worried about that.
"I activate a spell card: Shock Surprise! I banish Skull Marbles and Menko from my graveyard, and now I target Stardust Spark and Destroyer and destroy them! Now, you could activate Stardust's effect…"
Yusei scowled and passed priority, allowing the two monsters to be destroyed.
"Battle! Clear Wing attacks Charge Warrior!" Yugo shouted.
"I activate Scrap-Iron Scarecrow!" Yusei countered.
"That card's getting annoying," Yugo remarked. But if I banish Dice Roll Battle from my graveyard, I can force him to attack next turn.
"End turn," Yugo decided.
I'll have to depend on this next draw, Yusei thought.
"I activate a normal spell," Yusei called. "Miracle Synchro Fusion! I banish Junk Forward and Stardust Spark Dragon from my graveyard as Fusion Material!"
"Fusion Material?!" Yuzu and Yugo chorused.
"Warrior's pride and dragon's majesty! Rise, and lend your strength once more! Fusion Summon! Rise, Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste!"
A draconic knight in blue and gold armor spread their wings, brandishing a lance, displaying 3200 attack points.
"I change Charge Warrior into attack position. Battle! Draco-Equiste attacks Clear Wing! Spiral Javelin!"
The lance slammed into Clear Wing and Yugo gasped as his life points dropped to 2800.
"Charge Warrior attacks directly!" Yusei shouted. "Shooting Crusher!"
Yugo screamed, reduced to 800 points as Yuzu and her counterparts all cried out. Yugo's speed counters dropped to 2.
"I end my turn," Yusei said. Yugo panted and collected himself as he drew. His speed counters increased to 3, still under the threshold to use normal, continuous and field spells.
"I summon Speedroid Pachingo-Kart!" Yugo made the first move of his turn. "I discard Speedroid Razorang to target your monster and destroy it!"
"Draco-Equiste's effect!" Yusei responded. "I banish a Dragon Synchro from either graveyard, and they gain its effects for this turn!"
"You mean-" Yugo gasped.
"That's right! I banish Clear Wing! Since a monster effect is targeting a level 5 or higher monster on the field, that card is negated and destroyed! Dichroic Mirror!"
Yugo, Yuzu and the others watched in disbelief as Draco-Equiste's wings glowed green and shot rays down on Pachingo-Kart, just like Clear Wing.
"I set a card. I banish Den-Den Duke from my graveyard to target a Speedroid tuner there," Yugo announced, deflated. "I Special Summon back Gum Prize in defense mode."
"This is bad," Ruri spoke to Yuzu. "Can't we do something?"
"Stop his D-Wheel!" Serena said. "Punch him! Grab his handlebars or something!"
We're not going to help by dying in a crash, Yuzu thought back to them.
"What are we supposed to do then?" Serena shot back.
"We do have to do something," Rin spoke up. Yuzu felt something jolt in her mind, and the next thing she knew, she was looking at her own body standing on the side of Yusei's D-Wheel, duel disk activated and a hand of cards drawn. Except it didn't really look like her body anymore. Her outfit had changed to a blue jacket, pink shorts and white boots. The hair blowing underneath her helmet was green. And the girl's eyes, instead of Yuzu's own blue, were deep orange as she looked back at Yugo and he stared into them.
"Rin..?"
"INTRUSION PENALTY: 2000 LIFE POINTS," the duel disk announced, giving Rin a shock. Though she winced, she recovered immediately and reached for a card.
"Since I control no monsters, I can Special Summon Wind Witch - Ice Bell from my hand!" A witch shining in pastel shades of pink and purple appeared, sitting on a broomstick. "Now I can Special Summon another Wind Witch from my deck! I summon Wind Witch - Freeze Bell!" A second witch, this one primarily green, pink and purple, appeared as well. "In addition, Ice Bell deals you 500 damage!"
"You're going to regret that…" Yusei replied.
"Say what you like!" Rin retorted.
"No - you're really going to regret it," Yusei said as a barrier formed around him. "When Draco-Equiste is in attack mode, any effect damage I would take is inflicted to my opponent instead. Wave Force!"
Ice Bell's gust of wind was deflected right into Rin's face, stunning her and dropping her to 1500 life points.
"Rin!" Yugo called, unable to believe that her burn strategy had been turned against her.
"I'm fine!" Rin called back. "Since I control only at least two WIND monsters, I Special Summon Wind Witch - Snow Bell from my hand! Level 1 Snow Bell tunes level 3 Ice Bell and Freeze Bell!
Midwinter wind, make ice and snow my power and blow through! Synchro Summon! Appear, level 7 Wind Witch - Winter Bell!"
As the abstract-looking blue and purple materialized beside her with 2000 DEF, Rin leapt onto it from Yusei's D-Wheel and swooped over next to Yugo.
"Wow…" Yugo muttered before collecting himself. "You're not going to activate her effect-?!"
"Of course not, you goof!" Rin shouted. "A monster Synchro Summoned with Freeze Bell as a material can't be destroyed by battle, and Snow Bell prevents destruction by my opponent's effects!"
"You put up a good defense, but we can't do much with that alone," Serena said.
I won't lie, Rin thought, I entered the duel so late that spells are basically useless, I can't use my main effects unless we get rid of that Fusion Monster, and I'm already low on life points…
"That was just the chance I needed!" Yugo shouted. "The trap card, Parallel Synchro! I can activate this card when my opponent Synchro Summons while I don't control more cards than them!"
"And I count as an opponent in a Battle Royal…" Rin realized.
"I can use my field, graveyard and banished monsters as Synchro Materials by shuffling them back into the deck!" Yugo explained. "Level 1 Gum Prize tunes level 7 Clear Wing!
"Spread the wings that shine with holy light! Strike down your enemies with its radiance! Synchro Summon! Come forth, level 8! Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon!"
Rin and Yusei watched in awe as the new dragon burst into sight, razor-sharp, diamond-like wings gleaming.
"I set one card and end my turn."
Now Crystal Wing is here?! Yusei thought. However, a smile came to his face. "You two are quite a pair."
"We prepared our whole lives for our dream to enter the Friendship Cup together!" Yugo replied. Yusei's smile dropped.
"Together? In the Friendship Cup?! Why on Earth would you want to do that? Did either of you ever consider that for one to face Jack, the other would have to be sent to the Underground?"
Yugo and Rin both gasped, looking at each other as Yusei's words sank in.
"Draw!" Yusei announced. I can Special Summon Jet Warrior, Jet Synchron and Junk Mail from my graveyard by their own effects. I could go into a Synchro climb with Charge Warrior. However, then he saw that he'd drawn Dimension Voyage, a trap card that could summon back his banished Spark Dragon. If I set this and Synchro Summon Formula Synchron, then…
Yusei looked up as he heard sirens again, and he could tell that Yugo and Rin heard them too. The flashing lights of NDPD vehicles were travelling over the other highways, heading towards the intersection ahead of them.
"Looks like we won't be finishing this one," Yusei called to them. "I'll head them off and lead them away. You two should get out of here."
"What? Hang on-" before Yugo could say any more, Yusei gunned his engine and his D-Wheel shot forward at an amazing speed, his monsters vanishing. Winter Bell swooped over and dropped Rin onto the D-Wheel behind Yugo.
"Was he…" Yugo asked.
"...that fast all along?" Yuya finished, finding himself sitting back on the D-Wheel. Yuzu peered over his shoulder.
"What is going on?"
A/N: This chapter introduces something I was toying with since I conceptualized the fic: a closer adaptation of the original Riding Duels. I couldn't actually bring back speed spells since the main characters couldn't prepare to use them without the explanation of them being a niche there. So I made a new Speed World that worked with traditional spells and tried to roughly gauge how to balance them.
Yusei will eventually have revealed exactly what's going on with him.

Neither player can activate Equip or Quick-Play Spell Cards unless they have 3 or more Speed Counters.
