A Second Chance

The doorbell chimed, echoing through the house. Renee looked up from her plate, frowning slightly. "I'll get it," she said, wiping her hands on a napkin. Bella's heart skipped a beat as she recognized the voice that greeted her mother when she opened the door.

"Is this the Swan residence?" the man at the door said.

"Yes, I am Renee Swan," Bella's mother replied.

"Is Isabella here? I am Edward Cullen, her boss."

Renee looked at Bella, it was really him at the door. Bella nodded to her mother, Charlie looked at both women confused. Renee's eyes grew wide, and she took a step back, allowing him to enter. He looked tired, his eyes red-rimmed, like he hadn't slept in days. Edward Cullen, Bella's boss, was a man known for his sharp suits and commanding presence, but today he looked like a man who had the weight of the world on his shoulders.

"Thank you for letting me in, Mrs. Swan," Edward said, his voice strained.

Bella stood up, her chair scraping against the hardwood floor. "Mr. Cullen, why are you here?" she asked, her voice shaking slightly.

"What is going on?" Charlie asked standing beside his daughter.

Edward took a deep breath. "Bella, I'm so sorry, I had to come in person."

Renee looked between them, "Why don't you talk on the deck?" She suggested. "It's more private."

Bella nodded and led Edward through the kitchen to the back door. The cool evening breeze brushed against her skin as she stepped outside. The porch lights cast a warm glow, illuminating the space around them. She turned to face him, but didn't say anything, she was still in shock.

Time stood still as they faced each other in silence. a few more seconds passed and Bella broke the silence.

"How did you find me?"

"You left your phone," he said showing her the device.

"I did not," she rebutted taking out her phone from her pocket and then she realized her mistake. She had taken her work phone instead. It was linked to her phone, that's how he found her.

"I didn't go through it, but the email from the flight came up, that's how I knew where you were," he clarified.

"Here," he handed her back her phone.

"You said you wanted to talk," she said shyly.

"Yes, Bella, I need to talk to you. I know what happened was unprofessional and I'm sorry," Edward's voice was shaky and full of regret. "I don't know what came over me,"

Her eyes searched his, looking for a clue, for any hint of what was coming next. She felt the gravity of his words, the weight of his gaze. She had never seen him so vulnerable.

"Why did you do it, Mr. Cullen? Why did you kiss me?"

Edward sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Bella, I can't explain it. I've been fighting these feelings for so long, and I just..." He paused, searching for the right words. "I just lost control."

"Feelings?" Bella felt a rush of emotions, her mind racing to process what he had just said. Her heart thudded in her chest, the beat echoing in her ears like a bass drum.

"What do you mean?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I mean that I care for you, Bella, more than I should," Edward admitted, his gaze never wavering from hers. "More than just as an employee."

Bella felt her knees weaken at the revelation. "But, why now?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. "Why tell me this now? Is it because I'm divorcing? Is that why you helped me?"

Edward's eyes searched hers, full of sincerity. "No, it has nothing to do with that. I've felt this way for a long time. I wanted to tell you before it was too late, before you moved on."

"Don't you think it is a little bit too soon? You are not an impulsive man," she pointed out, Edward couldn't help but smile.

Edward's gaze was intense, his eyes searching hers for understanding. "I know it seems like it, but I can't ignore these feelings anymore. I've tried to keep them in check, but... I can't anymore."

"Since when?" She asked.

Edward took a step closer to her, his hand reaching out to touch her arm, but she stepped back. "A year,"

"A year?" Bella's voice was incredulous. "Why didn't you say anything?"

He stepped closer again, his hand hovering in the space between them. "Because you were married and I respected that, although I did notice something was going on. You changed."

"Changed?" she echoed, confused.

"Yes, you've been different, more withdrawn, less... happy." Edward's voice was filled with concern. "But, I knew it wasn't my place to interfere. But that day I noticed the way you came into that meeting, I knew something was up."

The memory of that day in the office flooded back to Bella. She had been tired, on the brink of tears from another fight with her husband. Edward had called her into his office for an emergency meeting and had noticed the bruises on her arm she had tried to hide under her sleeve.

"I am so sorry for what happened, if you want nothing to do with me or the company I will completely understand. I'll write you the best recommendation letter in the world."

Recommendation letter?

"Are you firing me?"

The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken fear. Edward's eyes widened in surprise. "Firing you? No, Bella, I would never do that." He took a step closer, but she stepped back again, her hand up in a silent plea for space. "I just wanted to tell you how I feel, and to explain why I acted so out of character. But if you want to leave the company I won't stop you."

Bella felt the world spinning around her. Her mind was a tornado of thoughts and emotions. The wind picked up, sending her hair swirling around her face. She could hear the distant laughter of her mother and Charlie from the house, oblivious to what was going on mere inches from them.

"What do you want from me, Edward?" she finally managed to ask, her voice steady despite the chaos inside her.

"I want you to know that I'm here for you," he said, his hand still hovering, desperate for some sort of connection. "I want you to know that I care about you and that I'm not going anywhere. But most of all, I want you to give us a chance to explore what could be between us."

"The ink on my divorce papers has barely dried and you're asking me for a chance!"

"I'm sorry," he apologized. Edward's voice was a gentle whisper in the night air. "I didn't mean to push you into anything. I just... I needed to be honest."

Bella took a deep breath, the chilly breeze carrying the scent of rain. She looked into Edward's eyes, seeing the hope and fear mingling there. He was a man she had always admired, a pillar of strength in her life, and now he was standing before her, his defenses down, asking for something she had never anticipated.

"Thank you for being honest and for bringing my phone back. I need time to think, you have to go,"

Edward nodded solemnly. "I understand. Take all the time you need, Bella. I'll be waiting." He turned and walked away, the sound of his footsteps fading into the night.

Bella watched him go, feeling a mix of relief and apprehension. She didn't know what to do with the revelation he had just given her. Her emotions were a jumbled mess. the rest of her dinner went untouched, she went upstairs after she made sure Edward left, she ignored when her father called her and asked what had happened with her boss. Renee told him to give Bella some space.

She sat on the edge of her bed, staring into the shadows, her mind racing. What Edward had said was a complete surprise. She was terrified of what this could mean for her job, her life.

The next day, after a sleepless night, Bella found her mother in the kitchen, sipping her morning coffee. Renee looked up from her newspaper, her eyes concerned. "You okay, honey?" she asked, setting her mug down on the counter.

Bella took a deep breath and told her about Edward's confession and the emotions that had been swirling within her ever since. Her mother's eyes grew wide with shock at what he said, but she didn't interrupt, instead, she listened intently, her hand gently squeezing Bella's. When she finished, Renee leaned back in her chair, her expression a mix of surprise and concern.

"Well, honey," Renee began, her voice measured. "That's a lot to take in. You need to think carefully about what you want. Edward's feelings might be genuine, but you're still healing from your marriage."

Bella nodded, her eyes glued to the floor. "I know, I just don't know what to do. He's my boss, and now this... it's all so complicated."

"He is telling you to take a second chance, right?"

Bella nodded, her throat tight. "But it's not that simple, Mom."

Renee took a sip of her coffee, her eyes thoughtful. "Did I ever tell you how your father and I met?"

Bella looked up, surprised by the sudden change in topic. "You said you met at the park," she said, her curiosity piqued.

Renee's eyes sparkled, "yes, but truth is Bella I was married before,"

Bella's jaw dropped. "What?!" she exclaimed.

Renee nodded. "I was married to a man named Phil. He wasn't a good man, we weren't right for each other. It ended in divorce, I couldn't be married to him anymore."

Bella felt like her world had been flipped upside down. "You never talked about this," she said, her voice shaking. "What happened? How long were you married for?"

"We married right after high school, I was into my second year of college when I found out he was cheating on me with the neighbor's daughter."

Renee spoke slowly, her gaze drifting to a distant memory. "Was she a minor?" Bella dared to ask. Renee nodded, "yes, she was sixteen,"

Bella felt the weight of that revelation settle in her stomach like a rock. "I had no idea," she whispered.Renee took a deep breath and continued her story. "After the divorce, I was lost. I thought I'd never find happiness again. And then I met Charlie. I'd seen him a few times at the diner where I worked part-time. I was crying at the park one day and he came to see what was wrong. I told him everything that had happened... He was kind, caring, and made me feel safe. We quickly became more."

Bella sat down at the kitchen counter, "Bella, if I hadn't given myself that second chance with your father, you wouldn't be here. And you, darling, are the greatest gift that life has given me."

Her mother's words resonated within her, but the fear of history repeating itself was too strong. "But, Edward's my boss, and I've just left one bad situation, I don't know if I can handle another. Besides what will people say? What will they think of me? I don't want anyone to think I am a gold digger or something!"

Renee's gaze softened. "Bella, you can't live your life based on what other people think. You've been through enough. You deserve happiness, and if he's a good man, then you should at least consider it."

Bella's eyes filled with tears as she processed her mother's words. "But what if it's a mistake? James was a "good man" too."

Renee leaned over and placed a comforting hand on her daughter's arm. "You're not the same person you were with James, Bella. You haven't been for a while. You've always known what you deserve and what you don't. And I am pretty sure that Mr. Cullen is not James."

"But what if he's just taking advantage of me because I'm vulnerable?"

Renee looked into her daughter's eyes, her expression gentle but firm. "You're not a child, Bella. You're a strong, intelligent woman who's been through a lot. You know the signs of a good man and a bad one. Mr. Cullen has been nothing but good to you, hasn't he?"

"Mom, I was with James for a while and kept thinking he was going to change, I'm not the best judge of character," Bella laughed dryly.

"James is a man child, Bella, and that is not your fault. You loved him and gave him the best years of your life and he threw that away!"

Bella nodded slowly, "He has been nothing but kind to me," she admitted. "He's never made a pass at me or any other employee before."

Renee took a deep breath, her eyes searched hers. "Then maybe, just maybe, he's telling the truth. And maybe, just maybe, he's the one who's been waiting for you to be ready for a second chance at happiness."

"Why me?"

It was a question that had been burning in Bella's mind since Edward's confession. She had been with James for twelve years. Married to him for eight, and now her boss, a man she had always admired, was confessing his feelings for her. It was a lot to take in.

"You have to think about yourself now," Renee said.

"Don't you think it's a little premature to think about another relationship when I have nowhere to go? I don't have a home, Mother."

Renee's gaze softened. "You're always welcome here, sweetheart. But you know what I mean. You deserve to be happy and to feel cherished. You deserve another chance at happiness,"

"I agree, but that doesn't mean it has to be with Edward,"

Renee nodded, understanding the turmoil her daughter was facing. "You're right, it doesn't have to be with him, but if you feel something, you owe it to yourself to explore it. Just make sure you're ready, and he treats you right,"

Bella took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her mother's advice. "What if it doesn't work out? What if it ruins everything?"

Renee's smile was gentle. "What if it does work out? What if he's the one who helps you rebuild your life?"

Bella sat there, mulling over the words her mother had said. It was a risk she didn't know if she was ready to take. But she knew one thing for sure - she couldn't ignore Edward's confession.
