A Second Chance
12
Bella looked at the small houses and apartments she had on her list, and finally settled on an apartment near the office. She signed a lease of six months per Edward's suggestion. her parents helped her move in, and so had Edward after their work day.
Not everything she had in her previous home fit into the apartment, and she had to buy a couch, and a new mattress for the bed set left by the previous owners, but she liked how it was looking like her space with each passing day.
Edward spent the night after they stayed up late unpacking and organizing the last of Bella's belongings. He spent half of the night watching her sleep and thinking about when she told him she wanted to pursue something more with him.
It's Bella's birthday morning, Edward made her breakfast with the ingredients she had in the fridge. The room is filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon. He has her morning tea steeping in her favorite mug. Edward serves her eggs just the way she likes them—over easy with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese. Bella's eyes lit up at the sight as he entered the bedroom with the tray he'd bought at Ikea.
They sit together on her bed, the crunch of toast echoing through the apartment. She's wearing a satin and lace romper she never thought she would use again as James' rejection made her change the way she dressed for bed. The sun filters through the curtains, casting a warm glow on the room. Edward watches her face, her expressions as she takes a bite of the eggs. She notices the glint in his eyes and feels a rush of warmth spread through her.
"This is the best birthday breakfast I've had in years," she says with a smile.
"It's the least I could do," he replies, returning the smile with one of his own.
After breakfast, Edward surprises Bella with her presents, carefully wrapped in shimmering paper.
He presents the first one to her, a bottle of perfume. "Sorry I went through your things to find out," he says, his voice low and earnest. "It's been driving me crazy, trying to figure out what it was."
Bella laughs lightly, taking the bottle from him. It's her favorite perfume, she sprays a bit on her wrist and brings it to her nose, closing her eyes. The sweet, floral notes of "Bloom" by Gucci fill her senses, bringing with it a wave of comfort and familiarity. She opens her eyes to find Edward watching her, his gaze intense, as if he's trying to read her thoughts.
"I wanted a kit but they didn't have it, so this will have to do for now," he smiled.
"For now? Edward this bottle will last me a while," Bella replied.
Edward nodded and handed her the next present, a sleek black box with a silver bow. Bella's eyes widened when she opened it to find a brand-new Dyson hair dryer with a set of attachments neatly tucked beside it.
"I noticed how much time you spend with your hair, not that I mind... " he said, "I thought this might make your mornings a bit easier."
Bella's eyes lit up as she took the Dyson hair dryer out of the box, feeling the weight of it in her hand. She had always wanted one, but could never justify the expense. "Edward, it's too much," she said, trying to hold back the excitement in her voice.
"You deserve it, Bella," he replied, his eyes never leaving hers. "You work so hard, and you're always there for everyone else. It's time you had something that makes your life a bit more luxurious."
Bella couldn't help but blush at his kindness. The hair dryer was definitely a luxury item, and she had often complained about her old one taking forever to dry her hair. "Thank you," she whispered, setting the box down on the bed.
The next present was a small, velvet pouch. Edward's eyes held a hint of mischief as she opened it, revealing a delicate silver necklace, the charm was a swan incrusted in small sapphires. a teardrop diamond charm dangled from the swan's neck. It also came with a pair of earrings. The blue stone is her birthstone and swan her last name, she hadn't seen something so perfect in her life. She held the necklace higher and It sparkled in the sunlight, and she gasped.
"It's beautiful," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Edward, please tell me this is not a real sapphire,"
He chuckled. "They're Swarovski" Edward said, taking the necklace from her and fastening it around her neck. The cool metal felt surprisingly comforting against her skin, and she couldn't help but run her fingers over the sparkling swan.
"Thank you," she repeated, her eyes misting over. Edward took her hand in his, his thumb gently caressing her knuckles.
"You know, Bella, I've been thinking," he began, his voice a mix of anticipation and nerves. "I know it's not the traditional birthday gift, but I wanted to give you something that shows how much you mean to me."
Bella felt her heart race as Edward pulled out the last gift, a small envelope. Inside was a handwritten note and a set of keys. "What's this?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
"It's the key to my apartment," Edward said, his voice steady. "I want you to have it, so you know that you always have another place to go, no matter what happens."
Bella felt a lump form in her throat. She had never been given anything like this before. It was more than a symbol of trust; it was a declaration of his feelings for her. The weight of the keys in her hand was substantial, a tangible representation of the bond growing between them. She looked up at him, her eyes searching his. "Are you sure?"
Edward nodded, his grip on her hand tightening slightly. "I've never been more certain of anything in my life," he said firmly. "You're important to me, Bella. I want you to know that you're not just someone I'm seeing—you're someone I want to build a life with."
Bella looked down at the keys, her heart pounding in her chest. She had never been given the keys to someone's home before—it was a gesture that signaled a level of commitment she hadn't expected so soon. The metal felt warm from Edward's touch, and she could feel the gravity of the moment pressing down on her.
"Thank you," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion. "I'll take good care of them." She added as she leaned in and pecked his lips lightly.
They both knew they had to get ready for work. Edward stood up first, stretching his arms over his head. "I'd better get going," he said, glancing at the clock on the bedside table. "I have an early meeting."
Bella nodded, "We're still on for tonight?" she asked.
"I'm counting the hours," he smiled.
The office was a buzz of activity when Bella arrived, but she couldn't help but feel like she was floating on air as she walked through the doors. The dark pink and lighter pink tulips on her desk caught her eye immediately. The vase was filled to the brim with water, keeping the flowers fresh and vibrant. A card was tucked into the greenery, with Edward's handwriting scribbled on the front: "To the most amazing person I know, happy birthday."
She picked it up and smelled it, she smiled and took a picture to show her mother, who was the only one in the loop about her relationship with Edward. She didn't like keeping her father in the dark, but he was still upset with the whole James ordeal, so they decided to tell him later on.
The day at work dragged by, filled with meetings and emails. But Bella couldn't focus; she kept glancing at the clock, eager for lunchtime. When it finally arrived, she made her way to the staff lounge, her stomach growling with anticipation, she had brought some leftovers she was eager to reheat and devour.
The moment she opened the door, she was hit by the sweet aroma of baked goods. "Surprise!" her colleagues shouted in unison. Bella's cheeks flushed with surprise and pleasure as she took in the smiling faces and the balloons at the edge of the table.
The lounge was transformed into a mini birthday bash. A table in the corner was draped with a white tablecloth, adorned with a spread of sandwiches, salads, and a tower of cupcakes frosted with a coral and lavender frosting and gold sprinkles. Her secretary, Mrs. Cope, had gone above and beyond, and the sight of it brought a warm smile to Bella's face.
Her colleagues gathered around her, each offering a hug or a handshake, congratulating her on another year of life.
"Thank you all so much," she said, genuinely touched by their thoughtfulness. She hadn't had a surprise party since she was a teenager, and the feeling of being surrounded by friends and colleagues who cared was a welcome change from the solitude she had grown accustomed to. Her past birthdays at the office had just been a quick cake cut.
"Twenty-five is an important age, I wanted to step it up," Mrs. Cope said.
Bella's smile grew wider, "This is definitely the best surprise."
"And we have something else for you," Bree, one of her colleagues, announced, holding up a small gift bag with a pink ribbon. "We all chipped in for it."
Bella took the bag, feeling a mix of excitement and trepidation. She hadn't expected anything like this, especially after Edward's extravagant gifts. She pulled out a beautiful leather-bound planner with her initials embossed on the front. "This is amazing, you guys," she exclaimed, flipping through the pages filled with motivational quotes and stickers for tracking her goals.
Her colleagues laughed and chatted among themselves as they enjoyed the luncheon, sharing stories and well-wishes. Bella felt a sense of belonging she hadn't experienced in a long time. She was happy, truly happy. The happiest she'd felt in years.
Bella left the office with a sense of lightness in her step. The surprise party had been a delightful distraction from the weight of the day's work. As she drove to her parents' house, she couldn't help but feel a twinge of nostalgia. Their home had always been her safe haven, a place where she could be herself without fear of judgment or harm.
Pulling into the driveway, she noticed the house looked even more inviting than usual. The porch light was on, and the smell of her mother's famous lasagna wafted through the open windows. She took a deep breath, savoring the familiar scent of garlic and tomato sauce that had filled the air every year on her birthday.
Inside, the house was warm and welcoming. The dining room table was set, the silverware gleaming in the candlelight. Her mother was in the kitchen, her apron tied around her waist, her hair pulled back in a bun, her hands busy with the final preparations. She looked up as Bella entered, her face breaking into a smile. "Happy birthday, sweetheart!" she called out, waving a wooden spoon.
Her father emerged from his study, "You're here," he said, his eyes lighting up. He gave her a warm hug and kissed her on the forehead. "Your mother's been waiting for you to get home so we can start the celebration."
The dinner was a feast. The lasagna was as heavenly as always, her mother had outdone herself. Last year Bella was too sad to celebrate with anyone, she did eat the lasagna alone in her house and then cried herself to sleep. She was grateful for the turn her life had taken in the past few weeks.
Her mother had made her favorite dessert, a triple-layer chocolate cake with raspberry filling. The sweetness and tartness of the raspberries cutting through the richness of the chocolate, it was heaven on a plate. The cake had twenty-five candles, one for each year of her life, and as they all sang "Happy Birthday" she couldn't help but feel that maybe, just maybe, this year would be different.
After dinner, she excused herself to get ready in her old room. She had a feeling that Edward would join her later. She had told him about her plans with her friends. It was a mix of excitement and nervousness as she picked out her outfit. She had gained some weight from all the comfort food she had been eating but the dress she picked out hugged her curves perfectly. The short, black dress had a plunging neckline that showed off the swan necklace Edward had given her. She fixed her make-up with a light hand, just enough to highlight her features. She was ready to face the night and whatever it had in store for her.
Bella went out with her college friends, they all worked at different places and had busy lives, but they never forget their birthdays. Bella has been a recluse the past few years, but not anymore. She would've loved for Edward to join her in the club, but it was too soon. Her friends were just assimilating her divorce.
The club was crowded, the throb of the bass vibrating through her chest, the lights flashing in sync with the rhythm of the music. The air was thick with the scent of sweat and alcohol, but it was a comforting reminder of the life she left behind. She danced with her friends, feeling the music in her bones, letting go of all the stress and doubt that had been building up inside her.
As the night grew later, Edward texted her, checking in to see if she was okay. She replied with a playful emoji, reassuring him that she was having the time of her life.
The club was a whirlwind of color and sound, and Bella found herself lost in the music, her troubles forgotten. She danced with her friends, laughing and joking, feeling the warmth of their companionship seep into her soul. It was a stark contrast to the loneliness she had felt for so long, and she realized just how much she had missed her friends. She didn't let them in too much when they asked about James, she just said they'd hit a bump and were working it out even though it was a lie.
Angela proposed a toast in her name, "To new beginnings," she said, holding up her glass of champagne.
They all clinked glasses, the sound echoing in the club. Bella took a sip, feeling the bubbly liquid tickle her nose and the sweetness of the drink spread across her tongue. She hadn't had a drink in a while, but she decided she would have a few drinks tonight.
The dance floor was packed, bodies moving to the rhythm of the latest pop hits. Bella's friends had managed to carve out a small space for themselves, and she was right in the middle of it, her hips swaying, her hair cascading down her back.
Between songs, they took a breather, sipping on their drinks and chatting about their lives. Lauren had just gotten a promotion at her law firm, and Angela was planning her dream wedding. The conversations were a whirlwind of excitement and laughter, each friend sharing their latest updates and gossip.
As they talked, Bella noticed the way the light reflected off the disco ball, casting a kaleidoscope of colors across their faces. The dim lighting and the occasional strobe created a playful atmosphere, making their smiles seem brighter and their eyes more vibrant. They talked about everything from their work lives to their love lives, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Bella didn't feel the need to hold back.
"I saw James the other day, Bella,"
Bella's heart skipped a beat as Lauren's words cut through the din of the club. She had hoped the topic would never come up tonight, but she should've known it was inevitable.
"He didn't look normal, he was a bit disheveled and in need of a shave," she said.
"That has been his look lately," Bella stated.
Her friends looked at her with concerned eyes, "What happened, Bella?" Lauren asked gently.
Bella took a deep breath and shared the condensed version of her breakup with James. The pain was still fresh, but she felt a weight lift as she talked about it. "I couldn't be with someone who didn't prioritize me or anymore guys, plus he put his hands on me. I wasn't going to stay with him after he put his hands on me either," Bella explained.
"You look free," Angela said.
Bella looked at her friends, the strobe lights casting shadows on their concerned faces. "I feel free," she replied, her voice a mix of disbelief and excitement. "I didn't know I could be happy like this again."
They nodded in understanding, sipping on their drinks as the music started up again. The conversation shifted to lighter topics as they downed another drink accompanied with a plate of loaded nachos they had ordered.
Suddenly, a crash echoed through the club, interrupting the music. Bella and her friends turned to the dance floor where a fight had erupted. Two men, their faces twisted in anger, were exchanging punches as a group of people tried to separate them. The crowd around them grew larger, the energy in the room shifting from festive to tense.
Before she knew it, the fight grew more intense, and the girls found themselves being pushed and jostled by the surrounding crowd, trying to keep their balance.
"Let's get out of here," Lauren shouted over the cacophony, her hand firmly around Bella's arm. They tried to navigate their way through the sea of people, but the crowd grew denser, making it difficult to move.
Bella felt a sudden force push against her, sending her stumbling backward. She lost her balance, the high heels she had picked out for the night betraying her. With a gasp, she felt her body hit the ground.
