Chapter 3

Denzel Age 8

It was the next day and Darrells Crocker ran to the store the next morning to give his son a gift. It was in a little cardboard box wrapped in Christmas paper, with a little golden bow around it. When Darrells got back to the hotel room, he started to write a little message on a small piece of paper to his son. It was a little special message for Denzel and it was a surprise. When Darrells was done, he folded the piece of paper up and put it inside a tiny envelope. Darrells had another small box with him. It was a dark brown lockable jewelry box. He put the envelope in the box and locked it with a small silver key. Darrells also had another wooden lockable box just for him with a message note in it. The wooden box he had was a light brown color. The wooden box was a reminder for him to read in the future. He carved a note on the box that said 'Open in 33 Years'. 33 Years? What could he possibly do with that message in 33 years, and more importantly… what was that message? Did it have something to do with Denzel?

Later that day, Darrells went back home to give his gift to Denzel and pick up his things. When Darrells went inside he saw Dolores standing by the door.

"I am here to pick up my things" Darrells told her."And I have this gift for Denzel" he added as he held up the present. Dolores nodded.

"He is in his room and he his very upset today" She said. Darrells nodded. He was already preparing himself for the moment."Alright. I'll hope for the best" Darrells started heading towards his son's room. When Darrells made it to his son's room, he slowly turned the door knob to let himself in. What he saw inside was Denzel laying in his bed on his side. He assumed he was crying. Darrells walked inside.

"If you're gonna go, just go already" Denzel told him in a sad voice. Darrells held up the present."I have a present for you" Darrells said. Denzel did not answer. He didn't even turn around to see the present. Darrells sighed, walked up to the bed and sat down on it.

"Look. I know this is hard for you" Darrells began."But, I came here to say goodbye and give you this present". Denzel still didn't say anything. So, he decided to start with something else.

"Look. I am sorry about what happened yesterday. I just don't want you to become a scientist like me. I would rather have you become something else, like an office worker, a doctor or even a teacher" Darrells said. Denzel finally turned to look at him.

"A teacher?" Denzel said in a small voice. He sounded intrigued. Darrells continued.

"Yeah. You can be a teacher. You can teach all different kinds of students. Junior high, High School, College or even Elementary students. Who knows. Maybe you could even teach them Science" Darrells said, trying to get Denzel to perk up. Denzel sniffled and whipped his nose with his hand.

"Yeah. I guess" he said, starting to calm down. Darrells handed him his present to open.

"Here" Darrells said. Denzel grabbed the present and started to unwrap it, by pulling off the bow.

When he got it opened up, Denzel saw a watch inside. The watch band was silver and the face looked shiny. He saw light reflecting on the face. Denzel slowly picked up the watch and held it his hand. The watch was already set and ticking.

"A Watch?" Denzel said. He stopped sobbing as he looked at the watch. Darrells nodded.

"Yes. A watch. I have one too" Darrells showed his wrist that had the exact same watch on it. Denzel looked at it, then he looked back up at his father. Denzel looked confused. Darrells sighed.

"Look, Denzel. I am moving away" Darrells told him.

"Moving away?" Denzel said in a small voice.

"Yes. I am moving to a far away place. So, I will be in a totally different time. Lets say, if the school bell rings, it would be the middle of the night for me and when you're going to bed, I will be at work in the middle of the day" Darrells explained. Denzel's lip started quivering again.

"Great! I just thought you were moving out, but now you're moving really far away too!" Denzel cried, starting to get upset again. Darrells grabbed his son's wrists, stopping him from moving.

"Denzel listen" Darrells cried, then started to talk more in a calmer voice."Here is the deal. I have the same watch as you do. I may not be able to visit you. I may not be able to see you. Probably not for a very long time, but, when I or if I even come back, we will compare the time and see how much time has passed". Denzel's face lit up as if he were a kid on Christmas.

"You're coming back!" Denzel cried in excitement.

"Now, hold on son" Darrells stopped him. He didn't want to give Denzel too much hope. Plus, he didn't want to reveal his plan."I'm not saying I will come back for sure. But, lets say we meet up again in the future for a visit. We can compare the time and see what our watches say. Don't put your hopes up too much, son".

"How old will I be when you come back" Denzel said, not as excited anymore, but more sad and curious. Darrells sighed.

"Oh, If I do come back, you could be 41 years old. Just imagine having a full time job and you could even have a family of your own that you wouldn't even need your dad anymore. But, like I said don't count on me coming back, Denzel. All you can do is just keep me in your memories".

"Can we at least write each other letters?" Denzel asked. Darrells thought about it for a moment. It wouldn't be a bad idea to write Dolores some letters while he was gone and tell her how much he loves her. He is still in love with Dolores the same way he's always been in love with her.

"I guess that won't hurt" Darrells answered." I Still want to talk to your mom any ways. So, you can write to me whenever you want and I will try to get back to you whenever I can. I also have one more thing I want to give you". Denzel nodded. Darrells then, handed Denzel the dark brown jewelry box.

"What's this for, Daddy" Denzel asked. Darrells put the small silver key on top of the little box.

Denzel looked back up at his Dad.

"There is a little written message for you in there, Son" Darrells began." Don't open it right now though. I want you to wait a while. I want you to wait till your an adult to open that box".

"But, that sounds like such a long ways away" Denzel whined. Darrells nodded."I know it seems like it now, son. But, It will come before you know it. You know how fast time seems to fly by now a days. I bet you might even forget about that box from time to time zone". Denzel was enjoying this last moment with his father. He almost forgot that his dad grounded him last night. This was probably the most precious time he spent with his father. Which was sad since he was leaving him today.

"How old do you want me to be when I open it" Denzel asked. Darrells sighed as he shrugged his shoulders."I guess till you are in your twenties in college. That should be old enough" Darrells suggested."Okay, Daddy. I will treasure this box forever. I can't wait till I'm a full grown adult in college to open this" Denzel told him."Yes, but you will miss being a kid. Being a child is the most enjoyable time of your life that you will never get back. Trust me, you will miss those times when you're older. I know I do. So treasure them, Denzel" Darrells told him, Denzel nodded.

"Can I have one last hug?" Darrells asked. Denzel nodded once again, so Darrells opened his arms, wide and Denzel gave his Dad one big hug. Denzel started to cry again. Darrells started stroking his son's hair as he soothed him.

"Shh, shh, shh, son. Everything's gonna be alright, okay, Denzel. Everything's gonna be alright… shh, shh, shh" Darrells soothed.

Later that day, Darrells had his things all packed up and he was ready to leave his family. He decided to have one last talk with his wife before he left. Dolores-Day Crocker was standing right by the door.

"Well, this is it" Darrells said. Dolores-Day sighed.

"I guess it is" she said. Then, she added,"Don't you think it's harsh to move so far away from your son?". Darrells shrugged his shoulders.

"Oh, I don't know. He's a kid, he'll get over it. You know how kids are, they are upset for a bit, then they get over it, or forget about it" Darrells answered."Yeah, but, you're his father. He needs his father with him to support him" Dolores told him."We'll keep in touch" Darrells said."We're gonna write letters to each other. I'm also gonna write letters to you, dear". Dolores shrugged her shoulders.

"Alright" she sighed. She didn't know how long they would keep in touch for. Darrells and Denzel were bound to stop writing letters to each other at some point, right. Nothing lasts forever.

"Well, goodbye" Darrells said awkwardly."Goodbye" Dolores said, awkwardly as well. Darrells continued.

"Unless if it's important… don't call me". Darrells looked back at his son behind him, then back at Dolores and then he finally left.

Denzel Age 8 (Christmas Eve)

Christmas finally rolled around the next month and Denzel Crocker couldn't be any sadder. This was going to be his first Christmas without his dad. His parents were both divorced by now. When he was at school before Christmas break, he heard that other kids were going to spend Christmas with both of their parents and both of their sides of the family. This year Dolores tried to make Christmas special for Denzel since his dad wasn't around with them. Dolores tried everything that she could do for Denzel. She put up the Christmas tree and he helped her decorate the tree with ornaments, candy canes, and stringing popcorn around the Christmas tree. Denzel also helped her put up other decorations around the house and Dolores let him stuff his stocking with chocolates.

When that didn't make him feel better, Dolores took her son to the mall to meet Santa Claus, but even that didn't work. She just wanted to try to give Denzel some Christmas spirit. Denzel was still sad over his dad leaving. It's not that Denzel didn't enjoy any of the stuff he did with his mom, he did like it and he liked spending time with her, but he was still sad that he didn't get to spend Christmas with his dad.

It was finally Christmas eve and Dolores was having a small get together with her side of the family. It was like any family get together for Christmas. Talking to one another, hanging out, having dinner maybe even watching a Christmas movie. Then, it was finally time to open up their presents. Denzel got some nice presents from his relatives just like any kid would. Although, there was this one present that his grandma gave him that stuck out with him the most, out of all the other presents he got. It was was a small music box. The music box was designed in a shape of a Christmas present. The box itself was yellow, there was a Christmas bow wrapped around it that was red. The music box played nice soft instrumental Christmas music. Denzel really liked the gift, even though it reminded him of his dad and how he wasn't living with them anymore.

Later that night, almost all of the relatives were gone, but, his grandma was still there. She decided to spend the night with her daughter and grandson. Denzel's grandma decided to stay in his room for a little bit while he was trying to sleep. Denzel laid in the one side of the bed and his grandma laid on the other side of the bed, and Denzel decided to wind up the music box and let it play some Christmas music, while he held on to it, close to his body. The Christmas music was beautiful, all the way through, however, there was this one soft song that he liked the most.

After a little bit, his grandma decided to leave the room to let him sleep and it was getting late, so she was going to get ready for bed herself. Denzel waited to make sure nobody was around. Then, he wound up the music box again and let it play the music as he cried. He was crying because he missed his dad. This was his first Christmas Eve without his father and it was no doubt that since his father was far away, he probably wouldn't even be here for the next Christmas, and the next Christmas after that. Last year was probably the last Christmas with his father and he probably wasn't gonna see his father for a long time. So, now since he was gone, he wasn't gonna get Christmas's and birthdays with him anymore. Even though his dad got angry at him, Denzel still loved him.

Denzel wanted to open the box his dad gave him. He was determined to see what was inside. But, something was stopping him. His dad told him not to open it until he was in his twenties in college. Denzel didn't want to wait that long. His curiosity was getting the better of him. But, he wanted to respect his fathers wishes… and that was what he was going to do.

Denzel Age 9

When Denzel was nine, Dolores-Day was to busy working at her job, so she decided to hire Denzel a babysitter while she was away. So, Dolores hired a young man named Vic. Vic seemed so chill while Dolores was around. But, while she was out, Vic was an evil babysitter. The only reason why Vic showed up was because he got paid for baby sitting. He also had no problems ordering the young Crocker around and yelling at him to go to his room. Vic would add in chores for Denzel to do to get some extra cash, like mowing the lawn and cleaning the bathrooms. Dolores never told Denzel to mow the lawn or clean the bathrooms. She would just tell him to put his clothes in the laundry bin, or clean his room. Dolores would even tell Denzel to help her clean the dishes. So, Denzel thought that Vic was worse than his father. At least his father had a heart and loved him.

After months, of having an evil babysitter and his mom leaving him almost every day, Denzel became sad. He wanted his mother around more, and he cherished the times he had with her, but she was always busy with work or going out somewhere. Denzel liked the days his mother had off, so they would spend the whole day together. But, as those days went on, he became sad knowing that the day would sometime end and they would have to go back to their normal lives. Mother with work and going out to places, and Denzel with school, and being home with his evil babysitter. Denzel missed the old days with his mother and his father.

Then, there was one day that changed Denzel Crocker's life forever. After school, Vic was over to babysit. Vic yelled at him to go to his room. Denzel went to his treehouse instead. Denzel was mad and upset at Vic. When Denzel was in his treehouse he saw a red science book on the floor in the middle of the tree house.

"Huh" Denzel said in curiosity."I don't remember leaving that there the last time I was here. Maybe mother left that on the floor on accident". Denzel walked up to the red book and picked it up. As soon as he picked it up. The book shook and the pages glowed. The book opened and fell on the floor, out of Denzel's hands. Out came two pink and green haired creatures who looked like small humans who float.

"I'm Cosmo!" The green haired human cried.

"And I'm Wanda!" The pink haired human cried. The two pink and green haired creatures flew back together.

"And We're you're Fairy God Parents!" The two cried out in excitement together. Denzel's eyes widened at the sight.

"Wait a minute… fairies!" Denzel said."If I remember correctly. I think my daddy told me that fairies are bad for kids".

"But, that's not true, Denzel Crocker" Wanda the pink haired fairy told him."Fairies are there to help kids who really need us. We grant wishes. We're here to help and protect you. But, you can't tell anyone about us. Not even your mother".

"Why not?" Denzel asked, still a little scared over the story his father told him.

"We would just go away forever" Cosmo explained." Only the kid with the fairies is allowed to know about them. It's supposed to be a secret. It's part of the rules".

"You have rules?" Denzel said, curious."Of course" Wanda said and poofed up a big purple book with her wand."There are rules about what you can and cannot do with us and the number one rule is that you can't tell anyone that you have a fairy god parent". Wanda made the book disappear with her wand.

"So, you grant wishes" Denzel said."That means I can wish for whatever I want as long as it's not against the rules?".

"That's right" Wanda said."Denzel, sweetie. We know you've been having a hard year so far since you're father left you. But, we're here to make it better. Here, have a milkshake". Wanda used her wand and wished up a chocolate milkshake with whip cream and a cherry on top". Denzel took the milkshake that was floating and started drinking it. Again, he thought about his lab that his dad destroyed when he was 8 and he thought about the jewelry box that his dad gave him. His eyes lit up. He turned back to his brand new fairy god parents.

"Hey, since you grant wishes, I have this jewelry box that my dad gave me and it's all locked up. I was wondering if you two could open the box for me to see what's inside. I'm not supposed to open it until I'm in college in my twenties. But, I'm not gonna wait that long. So, when I'm done looking inside, you can lock it back up as if I've never looked inside" Denzel hoped. Cosmo and Wanda frowned.

"Sorry, sweetie. Our magic doesn't work like that. If we open that box up. There's no way we can put it back the way it was. Our magic doesn't work on locks" Wanda explained. Denzel frowned, then he looked around his tree house that was once his lab.

"Hey, this tree house used to be my lab. Do you think you can use your magic and make it a really cool lab for me, please" Denzel pleaded. His mother taught him to always be polite.

"Now that we can do" Cosmo said."Wands up, Cosmo and Wanda. I got some wishing to do" Denzel said. The nine year old boy was just granted two magical fairies. This sweet boy's life was just about to get a whole lot better. Denzel had to go through all that suffering just to get two magical creatures that would change his life forever.
