Episode 83: Cruisin for a Losin
On the day of the Pokemon Contest, Team Rocket are being kicked out of the Rubello Town contest hall.
"And stay out!" The guard shouts.
Jessie, holding a big green ribbon shouts, "Contest rules say you have to have a ribbon to compete and I have one! Give me two good reasons why I can't enter!"
"One, that's a fake ribbon," James points out.
Then Meowth points out, "Two, dat's a big fake ribbon."
"Wobbuffet!" (You said it!)
Indeed, the ribbon Jessie has in her hand is too big to be a contest ribbon.
Meanwhile, Mew, May, their friends, Savannah and Sandra are in the Contest Hall, ready for the Pokemon Contest to start. And it will decide will either Mew or May earn a third ribbon, and the possibility Savannah might earn a second one.
At the battlefield, Vivian announces, "Welcome to today's contest, everyone! Because this is a level R1 Pokémon Contest, every coordinator here today has earned at least one ribbon. So you can bet your bottom dollar that you're going to see some topnotch Coordinators competing here today.
Up in the grandstands, we see Sandra, Tomo, and the others, sitting next to the MFP members in attendance
"And now, let me introduce our panel of judges. Starting with our head judge and Chief of the Pokémon Activities Committee, Mr. Raoul Contesta," Vivian says.
"Hi Vivian," Mr. Contesta says.
Vivian then says, "Next, the president of the Pokémon Fan Club, Mr. Sukizo."
"Glad to be here today," Mr. Sukizo says.
"And Rubello Town's very own Nurse Joy," Vivian adds.
"Thank you for having me," Nurse Joy says.
"And, as always, I'm your host, Vivian Meridian.
As Vivian talks, Mew, May and Savannah are in the dressing room, along with other coordinators/
Savannah turns to the girls, "Wow, girls. You seem so calm."
"Well, maybe it's because we've done this a few times already," Mew says.
"I'm so nervous I can barely remember my own name," Savannah says, blushing.
And May says, "Savannah, you just have to relax. If you're all tense, your Pokémon will know it and they'll be nervous also. Believe me, I've been there and done that, so I have some experience."
"I'm lucky to have your expert advice, May," Savannah says.
As May and Savannah talk, Drew overhears.
Outside, Team Rocket is walking away from the Contest Hall.
On the screen, Vivian continues, "The winner of this contest will receive the one-of-a-kind Rubello Ribbon. Now, our first two contestants are on stage and ready to go."
James turns to Meowth and asks, "Well, Jess, shall we move on?"
"Why don't we make more of dat Pokéblock stuff, only wit legit ingredients, and sell it?" Meowth says.
But then, someone calls out, "That is just the most adorable ribbon. Any chance that it might be for sale?"
The three see that it's a woman with an Azuril talking to them.
"I think a ribbon like that would look just perfect on my little Azurill," The woman says.
"Well, then, let's make a deal," Jessie says, eagerly.
Back inside, Mew is on the stage, and ready to perform.
Vivian says, "Next up is contestant 11, Ashley!"
Mew then throws her Pokeball, "Braixen, let's go!"
And with that, Braixen comes out and lands gracefully on her feet.
"Alright Braixen, let's start with Fire Spin!" Mew calls out.
Braixen then performs Fire Spin and begins to spin around her.
Mew calls out, "Jump and use Will-O-Wisp!"
Braixen then jumps and uses Will-O-Wisp and the round bluish purple flames circle around the Fire Spin.
"Now Psyshock!" Mew calls out.
Braixen performs Psyshock from her stick, and it spreads across the battlefield, breaking the Fire Spink. The Will-O Wisp gently descends as the fire spreads into small flames and lands on the ground. Briaxen gently twirls with the Psyshock and makes the other attacks move around.
"Wow. Talk about a very unique combination of fire and psychic," Vivian says.
After the performance, Mew heads back to the dressing room and Mew makes her way to the stage.
"Hey May, you're up?" Mew asks.
"Yep. Your Briaxen was amazing out there. All the extra practice really paid off," May says.
"Thanks May, good luck," Mew says.
"Trust me, I don't need luck," May says, with confidence and walks to the stage.
Mew says concerned in thought, "May, I'm starting to think you're feeling over confident.
Back at the battlefield.
Vivian says, "Next up, is contestant 12. May!"
"Now, Beautifly, come on out!" May then calls out
Beautifly then calls out.
May calls out, "Start with Morning Sun!"
Beautifly begins to shine as bright as the sun when a new day begins, wowing the crowd.
"That was great!" May says. Then calls out, "Now follow it up with Silver Wind!"
In the crowd, the MFP and Mew and May's group are watching as the MFP members and the Pokemon cheered May on.
Later, as May heads back to the dressing room, she runs into Savannah.
May smiles, "Hey."
"May. That was great out there, you were awesome," Savannah says.
"Gee, thanks, Savannah. I know you're gonna do a great job yourself," May says.
Savannah responds in surprise, "Thank you."
"And now, please welcome a contestant from right here in Rubellow Town, Savannah!" Vivian announces as Savannah takes the stage.
The MFP members quickly took notice
One mother notices, "Finally, she's up."
Another says, "I'm so excited."
"This calls for a group cheer," The third mother says.
The three ladies do so, with the Pokemon joining in.
Sandra cheers, "You go get em, mom!"
Savannah chuckles nervously before Vivian comes up to her.
Vivian comes over, "That was your cue to take the stage, dear."
"Oh. I'm so sorry," Savannah says, and gets out her Pokéball, "I'm ready now."
Sandra blushes, "Embarrassing."
"Your mom does look a little nervous, Sandra," Max points out.
"Here goes, then," Savannah says, remaining calm.
With determination, Savannah calls out, "Flareon, let's do it!"
Flareon comes out, "Use Fire Spin and then Tackle!"
Flareon launches the attack before jumping through the spirals of the move like they were flaming hoops, causing an applause from the crowd.
"That was great!" Tomo says.
Savannah happily says, "Yeah! Way to go, Flareon.
As the MFP and the Pokemon cheer, in the dressing room, May watches on.
"Good, looks like she's calmed down now," May says.
Then Savannah calls out, "
Savannah then calls out, "Alright, now, Swift and then Ember!"
Flareon launches the first attack before firing the second one, to make the stars glow red hot, amazing the audience.
Vivian says, "That is quite an impressive display, the fiery red mixing with the striking yellow making a spectacular orange that's just beautiful in motion! A very creative and out of this world attack combination."
"I'd hate to toot my own horn, but I was the one who came up with that combo. I call it the Flaming Stars," Sandra says.
"You're kidding," Zinnia says.
Back in the dressing room…
"You did it. I knew you were gonna be awesome," May says.
"Yeah. You were amazing out there," Mew says.
"Thank you," Savannah says, "Sounds like you had more faith in me than I did in myself.
May giggles.
Then Savannah says, "But it's been a while since my last contest and my attacks were still a little rusty. I'm still a long way from your level, May."
"Keep training and you'll get there. Experience is what helped me win my two ribbons in a row.
"So the second victory is the key?" Savannah questions.
"Yep," May says, "Once you get the confidence you need, combine it with the right skill and winning is pretty easy, especially after you get a couple of ribbons."
They soon hear Drew chuckle.
May turns to Drew, "What? What's so funny, Drew?"
"Nothing," Drew says.
May walks up to him, annoyed, "Look, if you've got something to say to me, then why don't you just say it?"
"I don't," Drew says.
"Well, what do you know? It looks like you're worried that you can't beat me. With my third win on the way, I might qualify for the Grand Festival before you do," May says.
I'm gonna give you just one little bit of advice; forget what you've won, May, and concentrate on the future," Drew says and walks away.
"And what's that supposed to mean?!" May questions.
Mew responds in thought, "I think I know what Drew means.
Back out on the stage…
Vivan announces, "Ladies and gentlemen, the final entry in the appeals round! Let's have a warm welcome for Drew!"
The crowd cheers while the MFP cheer and snap pictures, back in the dressing room, Mew, May, and Savannah watch on/
"He's the reason the MFP goes to watch Pokémon Contests," Savannah says.
"Wow, he's more popular than I realized," May says.
Mew mutters, "Even though he can be a showoff."
Drew then calls out, "Let's go, Roselia, Petal Dance!"
Roselia then comes out of the Pokeball, and lets out a petal dance.
Vivian announces, Incredible! Instead of a Pokémon emerging from its Pokéball, Drew has produced an explosion of flower petals! I've never seen anything like it! Thousands of petals are raining down on us!"
Mr. Sukizo says, "That is beautifully unique!"
"And uniquely beautiful!" Mr. Contesta says.
With a snap of Drew's fingers, Roselia appears
Vivian says, "And now, from out of the flower petals, Roselia appears like a magician! What a magical, glorious arrival to the stage!"
"Drew is incredible!" Sandra says.
"I have to admit, he's a great coordinator," Molly says.
"Plus he's so cute!" The fan says, and faints, though Sandra catches her
In the dressing room, the other coordinators look on
"Drew is absolutely amazing, isn't he?" Savannah says, amazed.
"He's something alright," Mew says, sheepishly.
Annoyed, May says in her thoughts, "Spare me."
Meanwhile, outside the Contest Hall, Team Rocket had another get-rich-quick scheme going inside a tent, where they were making more of the giant ribbon that Jessie previously had.
"Ready for another one, Meowth?" James asks.
"Yep, dis one's all done," Meowth says.
But Jessie says, "Hold it right there!" and inspects the ribbon that Meowth finished and finds an opening in the stitching, "This is shoddy workmanship. Did you sew it with your hands or your feet?" Then hands it to James, "Sew it up."
"All of them?" James says.
"Not all of them, just look for ones that aren't tightly sewn together," Jessie says, "How am I supposed to charge for under-quality?"
"Same way we always have?" Meowth responds.
"Wobbuffet!" (Cause we're crooks!) Wobbuffet says.
Back inside the Contest Hall, the appeals round was over
Vivian then says, "Time to announce the coordinators moving on to the battle round! The judges' decisions are in and only four have made it through. Here they are now! Drew, May, Ashley, and Savannah!"
As Vivian calls the names, they appear on the screen.
"We made it! Way to go, Savannah," May says.
"You, too, May. As well as you, Ashley. I'm really happy for you," Savannah says.
"Oh, I was never really too concerned about it," May says.
"Well for me, I was a bit nervous that my performance idea would work, but it worked great," Mew says.
"True, but your extra practice with Braixen really paid off," May says.
As the three talk, Drew listens and smiles.
In the audience, the MFP was quite pleased.
One fan says, "So far, so good."
Another says, "Yes! Both Drew and Savannah!"
"This is so exciting, "The third fan says.
Sandra then says, "That's great knowing that they made it into the second round."
"Yeah," Jen says.
"Now we need to know who's facing who," Brock says.
Vivian then announces, "Alright, everyone, the computer will now select the pairings for the battle round."
Soon, the computer made its selections; Drew vs Ashley, A.K.A. Mew, and May vs Savannah. In the dressing room, Mew, May, and Savannah were shocked to see they are to face each other, as were the gang and the MFP.
"I can't believe May has to go up against Savannah," Max says.
"And that means Ashley is going up against Drew," Molly says.
"And will be going on first," Jen adds.
"Oh, that's not fair," Savannah says.
Later, Savannah was busy polishing Lairon's hide while Misty was wiping Bulbasaur's bulb, and Mew is helping Tsarenna do a little exercise before her battle against Drew.
"I never expected this to happen," Savannah says.
"Oh, it's okay. Don't worry about it, "May says.
Savannah seemed puzzled.
May says, "No matter who you're facing, you still have to give it everything you have. Anything less would be an insult to your opponent."
"Really?" Savannah says, "So, we won't try to take it easy on each other? I'm glad you said so because I was worrying about that a lot."
May says, "But you have to remember, what works for a gym battle might or might not work for a contest battle. Course, I have a special skill for contests."
Savannah says, "Oh, tell me, May."
"Oh, okay. Since you're a friend," May says
Max soon shows up, "Good job, May."
May turns to Max, Thanks," and notices everyone else with him, "Oh, you're all here."
"Just wanted to say congratulations," Tomo says.
"Yeah," Jen says.
"You and your Beautifly are in sync," Brock says.
"And Braixen was really amazing, it's like she's dancing on fire," Zinnia says.
Sandra soon comes up to her mom, "Way to go, mom!"
Savannah says, "Thank you. I wouldn't have done it without everyone's help."
"So, May, are you sure you're the one who should be giving advice on battling?" Max asks.
"Yes. As a matter of fact, I'm very sure," May says.
Mew walks over, "Savannah, if you need battling advice, I'll be happy to talk to you about it. Sure, I'm mainly used to actual battle and gym battles, but I also started learning about contest battles as well. However, I've learned that…"
May suddenly approaches Mew, "What are you talking about? Contest battles are a lot more complicated than gym battles. You have a lot of nerve trying to butt in, Ashley. I really wouldn't listen to her if I were you."
Sandra turns to her mom, "Mom, I don't see why you need advice from anyone. Go out and battle the way you always do."
"Maybe you're right," Savannah says.
"So are you gonna use Bulbasaur in the battle round, May?" Max asks.
"Yes, and we're gonna make it the best debut battle ever!" May says.
Then Mew walks up to May, "Hey May, I think I got an idea on what to do, I've done it with my Bulbasaur before and…"
But May interrupts her, "Save it. I don't want any help from anyone. Bulbasaur is my Pokémon and I know what's best for her. Mind your own business, you think you can handle that?!
"May, calm down," Mew says, "I just want to give you some advice."
"No thanks," May says with a huff and walks away.
Brock and Zinnia look over to Drew, who was busy getting Masquerain ready, and the boy just shrugs.
Mew kneels down to Bulbasaur and pets her, "Don't worry about her, Bulbasaur. She's gonna be okay."
Pikachu and Eevee agree.
"Bulbasaur," (Thanks, you guys.) Bulbasaur says.
Meanwhile, inside the Team Rocket ribbon tent, the three were readying their stock.
Jessie puts a giant ribbon down, "There," She kneels down, "Now to get these three," And picks them up and sets them on top of the first one.
James turns to Meowth, "Don't you think we've made enough of them now?"
"We could decorate da whole Hoenn region," Meowth says.
Jessie refuses, No! Sew until your fingers! These ribbon pillows will make us rich! Think about that big mansion!"
"With a big beg," James says.
"And a long nap," Meowth says.
"Wobbuffet!" (Got that right!) Wobbuffet says.
Back inside the Contest Hall….
Vivian announces, "Ladies and gentlemen, it's time. The first battle of the second round is about to get underway. The time limit for each battle is five minutes, and each coordinator will try to take as many points from their opponent's score as possible, striving to use the most beautiful attacks. In addition, Grand Festival rules require that all Pokémon be different from those used in the first round. And now, the battle between Ashley and Drew, will begin!
As Vivian finishes her sentence, the timer starts.
Mew then calls out, "Tsareena, I choose you!"
And Tsareena comes out.
Drew then calls out, "Masquerain, you're up, go!"
Masquerain comes out.
"Oh wow, it's a Masquerain!" One of the fans says.
Another says, "That must be Drew's new Pokemon.
The third fan begins taking pictures, "The two of them look perfect together."
"Tsareena, let's start with a Trop Kick!" Mew calls out.
Tsareena performs the attack.
Vivian says, "Ashley and Tsareena make the first move, how will Drew respond?"
"Dodge and use Bubble!" Drew calls out.
Masquerain dodges and does so.
Vivian says, "Masquerain has spun away and beautifully displays its feelers! That's a 10% point loss for Ashley
As Vivian talks, Mew loses said percentage of points.
Then Drew calls out, "Use Ice Beam!"
Masquerain fires the attack, freezing the bubbles into solid ice.
Vivian announces, "Incredible! Masquerain's Ice Beam has frozen the bubbles in midair! They're certainly beautiful, but what's Drew planning to do with them?"
Mew suddenly realizes what Drew is planning.
Drew calls out, "Now Hidden Power!
Masquerain launches the attack and the orbs start bouncing off the balls of ice until reach Tsareena.
But then, Mew calls out, "Tsareena, use Leaf Storm!"
Tsareena then performs Leaf Storm, and causes the Hidden Power and Ice Beam Bubbles to be caught in the vortex.
"Incredible! Tsareena is able to counter that attack and have them both caught in the Leaf Storm! And Drew is starting to lose points," Vivian says.
Indeed, Drew is already starting to lose around 15% of his points.
Drew says, "That Tsareena is tough, and Ashley is smart to figure out this plan."
"Now, give them your High Jump Kick!" Mew calls out.
Tsareena then begins to jump as she stops the Leaf Storm. She then kicks one of the bubbled ice beam and fires them like a soccer ball and begins to aim towards Masquerain.
Drew calls out, "Masquerain, dodge!"
Masquerain dodges as it twirls around. Tsareena continues jumping and kicking like soccer balls. It shows that both Drew and Mew's points are beginning to go down further.
"Incredible, Tsareena is kicking the attacks like soccer balls, demonstrating its long strong legs, and its athletic skills. Masquerain is dodging with grace and effort. And the two are losing points.
Then Drew calls out, "Use Quick Attack!"
Masquerain uses Quick Attack to dodge the attacks and head towards Tsareena.
"Now, Ice Beam!" Drew calls out.
Masquerain fires the attack as Tsareena lands on the ground.
Mew calls out, "Rapid Spin, Tsareena!"
Tsareena spins and twirls faster and faster, and causes the Ice Beam to be spinning around her.
"Now Magical Leaf!" Mew calls out.
Tsareena fires the attack and it spins and forms as the Ice Beam causes the attack to freeze, but continues going, and strikes at Masquerain. That causes Drew to lose more points.
"Incredible! Ashley is able to stop the Ice Beam and is able to use it and Tsareena's attack to counterattack!" Vivian says.
Then Drew calls out, "Masquerain, Hidden Power!"
Masquerain performs the attack.
"Now, Silver Wind!" Drew calls out.
Then Masquerain uses Silver Wind to spin and increase the speed of the attack, striking Tsareena. Tsareena falls to the ground, but she is able to stand up. Mew loses more points as a response.
Just then, the timer has reached zero.
"Times up!" Vivian announces, "And the coordinator who will be moving on to the final round is!"
Everyone looks at the screen to see that Drew and Mew have lost half of their points, and the score is very very close. However, it shows that Drew has more points.
"And it's Drew!" Vivian announces.
Tsareena feels disappointed that she lost.
Mew reassures, "It's okay, Tsareena, you did a very great job out there."
Tsareena shows a happy expression as she nods.
Drew and Masquerain walk over.
Drew then says, "Hey Ashley, you and Tsareena were great out there," And presents his hand, "You both have given us a great battle."
"Thanks Drew," Mew says and shakes Drew's hand, "You and your Masquerain were great out there."
"Thanks," Drew says.
Many of the audience cheers, including the fans saying, "Yay! Awesome!" "That was fantastic!" "You're the best, Drew!"
Molly says, "Wow. I can't believe she lost."
"Yeah," Tomo says.
"But you have to admit, they really give it their all," Brock says.
In the dressing room…
"I can't believe she lost," May says, surprised.
"Yes. I know," Savannah says, "But wow. I can only dream I'll be that good someday."
"Yeah? Well now it's my turn," May says.
Soon enough, May and Savannah are on stage and ready to battle.
Vivian announces, "For our second matchup in the battle round, it will be May vs Savannah!"
"Friend or not, I'm gonna win," Mays says, and gets out Bulbasaur's Pokéball, "Now let's do it, Bulbasaur."
"Got to stay calm. Try to stay calm," Savannah says and gets out her Pokeball.
She then throws it as she calls out, "I'm counting on you, Lairon!"
And Lairon comes out.
May then comes out, "Bulbasaur, let's go!"
Bulbasaur comes out of the Pokeball, but immediately notices the cheers and sight of the crowd. Savannah and Mew, who is now sitting with the others, are the first to take notice. Next thing they know, Bulbasaur runs behind May's leg, seemingly frightened.
"Bulbasaur!" May says, shocked.
Vivian says, "Wait a second, it seems that something strange is going on with Bulbasaur."
"Hey, what's going on?" Tomo asks.
"What's wrong with Bulbasaur?" Molly asks.
"I think Bulbasaur is getting stage fright," Mew says, worried.
"I think you're right," Zinnia says.
"Yeah, seeing this big crowd might has Bulbasaur freaked out," Brock says.
"Oh no!" Jen says, shocked.
"Really?" Max asks, shocked
May kneels down to Bulbasaur, "Bulbasaur, it's showtime. What's wrong with you?"
"Bulbasaur." (Can't, do it.) Bulbasaur says.
"Well, I was afraid that something like this was gonna happen," Brock says.
"How'd you know?" Tomo asks.
"Cause while we're in the waiting, all of May's anger from arguing with Mew really upset Bulbasaur, but she didn't even know," Brock says.
"Looks like all May cares about now is her winning streak," Max says.
"You're right, and I think she's also too caught up in wanting to beat Drew," Mew says.
The cheer mothers call out, "Come on, Bulbasaur!" "We know you can do it!"
May says to Bulbasaur, "You have to get moving or we don't have a chance."
"Bulbasaur." (I can't, do it.) Bulbasaur says, frightened.
"What's the matter, Bulbasaur?" May asks, showing concern.
Bulbasaur reluctantly walks out onto the battlefield.
"Oh, no. May, you told me that no matter who you're facing, you battle with everything you have or it's an insult," Savannah says. She then calls out, "Lairon, Take Down!"
Lairon charges
May calls out, "Bulbasaur, dodge it, now!"
But Bulbasaur is still frozen in fear.
"Don't just sit there!" May calls out.
"She's not getting up!" Zinnia says, worried.
"Get out of the way, Bulbasaur!" Molly calls out.
"Dodge it, hurry!" Max calls out.
"That won't help, she's got a really bad case of stage fright!" Brock says.
"Which means, she's going to get hit really hard!" May says.
Worried, May cries out, "Bulbasaur!"
Lairon's attack connects and knocks Bulbasaur back.
"Lairon scores a direct hit, and May loses 10% of her points," Vivian says.
On the screen, it shows May's points decrease by the said amount.
"Bulbasaur, can you get up?" May calls out.
Bulbasaur struggles to do so.
"Alright, time for a counterattack to show them what you're made of!" May says. Then calls out, "Use Vine Whip!"
Bulbasaur extends her vines.
Savannah calls out, "Just stay put, Lairon!"
Lairon does so and gets snared
"What's this? Lairon didn't even attempt to dodge that Vine Whip. What's going on here?" Vivian announces.
As Vivian talks, Savannah loses 5% of her points.
"Now, throw Lairon with all your might!" May calls out.
Bulbasaur begins to lift Lairon up.
Savannah then calls out, "Use Shock Wave, now!"
Lairon does so and the electrical current travels through the vines and right to Bulbasaur.
"So that's it! Who would've expected Lairon to electric attacks?" Vivian says.
"Yeah, alright!" Sandra says.
But Max says, "Wait, Bulbasaur is a Grass Pokémon, so how could electrical attacks have any effect against it?"
"Just wait, you'll see in a second. That's the whole reason why Lairon didn't job Vine Whip," Sandra says.
Soon, Bulbasaur is forced to let go and gets knocked backward by the electrical force.
"Bulbasaur, you've got to get up!" May calls out.
Bulbasaur tries to, but can't seem to.
"Bulbasaur looks really paralyzed!" Jens ays.
"But Shock Wave doesn't paralyze the target, it's supposed to temporarily stun,"
"Unless there's direct contact," Mew says.
Everyone realized what Mew meant.
Sandra confirms it, "That's right, as long as the two were connected by Bulbasaur's Vine Whip, the attack had a much greater effect. That was another one of my ideas for mom."
"I got to hand it to her, that attack was both beautiful and effective, just like Sandra said it would be," Savannah says.
"Come on, don't give up," May calls out.
Bulbasaur struggles to stand, but she is clearly weakened and still frightened.
"It's obvious that Bulbasaur has taken a lot of damage. Will May be able to regroup in time?" Vivian says.
Then Savannah calls out, "Metal Claw, Lairon, go!"
Lairon pounces and strikes hard with the attack, knocking Bulbasaur back.
"Bulbasaur!" May cries out.
Soon, the judges call for a Battle Off.
Vivan announces, "The judges have spoken! Bulbasaur is out of the battle and Savannah continues on to the final battle of the second round!"
But May says, "Hey, wait! I'm not done battling!"
Yes, you are!" Nurse Joy says, sternly
May was taken aback by Nurse Joy's outburst.
"Where's your concern for your Pokémon's health, May?" Nurse Joy questions.
Then Mr. Contesta, "That is a coordinator's number one priority, not winning."
"You should know that by now," Mr. Sukizo adds.
The whole contest hall went quiet like a mouse pokemon as May thought about what she had done, and the realization hit her like a ton of bricks.
Later, May and Bulbasaur were sitting by a lake in the park.
May pets Bulbasaur on her head, "Bulbasaur, are you alright?
"Bulbasaur," (I'm alright.) Bulbasaur answers.
But May says in remorse, "I'm sorry, and ashamed."
Bulbasaur tries to comfort her before two familiar Pokemon arrive.
"Pikachu? Eevee?" May questions.
May looks to her right as Mew shows up.
"Why are you sitting over here?
"Oh, hi. I don't know," May says.
"I'm guessing you're thinking about what happened, huh," Mew says.
May sighs, "Yeah.
Mew says, "Anyway, the final battle is going on inside."
May looks at the screen and sees Lairon and Masquerain
"Want to come inside and watch it with us?" Mew asks.
"No thanks," May answers, sadly.
"You know…" Mew says, and sits down next to May, "Every trainer gets carried away with wanting to win all the time."
"They do?" May asks.
"Yeah, but it's no big deal," Mew says.
"But it's so embarrassing," May says.
"Maybe, but…" Mew says. Then Mew gives May a firm karate chop to the head.
May yelps, "Ow! Hey! What was that for?"
"That is for not considering Bulbasaur's feelings when she got stage fright, and for getting a big head," Mew says.
May sighs, "You're right. I deserve that."
"But still, you were right, May. The way you and I battle is different. But whether it's a gym battle or a contest battle, you and your Pokémon always have to be united. That's the one thing that'll always be the same."
"You're right," May says, "So how did I manage to forget something as important as that?"
"I'm sure you'll remember it next time. I should, I actually went through the same thing you did," Mew says.
May is shocked, "You did?"
"Yeah," Mew says, "Eevee and I became overconfident for our own good, and we got badly hurt."
"How did it happen?" May asks.
"Well, after I stayed with Professor Oak and taught me along with Gary about Pokemon and battling, Eevee and I have been training with the other Pokemon, and we kept winning so many battles. We felt as though we could win every battle we come across," Mew says.
Then lowers her head, "But one day, Eevee and I got ourselves into a battle with a very big and powerful Nidoking. He tried to defeat it but it was too strong. We continued battling and I ended up pushing Eevee until she ended up badly injured. I realized what happened and tried to defend Eevee, but I got hurt as well. Professor Oak and Gary along with Adriana and Daisy found it, and took us to get help. Seeing Eevee hurt, I realized that I got so caught up with battling that I didn't realize how hard I was putting her. And I actually wanted to give up entirely."
"You did?" May asks, shocked.
Eevee nods, "Vee." (Yes.)
"However, Professor Oak explains to me that everyone can get overconfident when they win at times, and sometimes end up putting winning before everything else. However, he told me that whether you're in a battle, or not, no matter where you go, trainers and Pokemon must always be united as one. To help battle, to help train, to be there for one another. And with that, I've decided to not only work hard on battling, but to be sure to think of my Pokemon. And if I lose, I take it with humility and have to admit that I lost," Mew explains.
"Wow. What an amazing story," May says, "You must really love Eevee."
"I do," Mew says, and picks up Eevee, "Eevee was very important to me. She's practically my sister."
"I can tell," May says.
"So then, no matter what you do, you and your Pokemon are a team, we don't just depend on them, they also depend on us. We need to look out for each other," Mew says, "And I'm sure you'll get it next time. And only when you and your Pokémon are totally in sync, you'll be able to go after that victory with even more power and team work."
Pikachu and Eevee agree.
"Think so?" May asks.
"I know so," Mew says.
"Thanks Mew, and I'm sorry about how I acted towards you," May says.
"It's cool," Mew says.
Back inside the Contest Hall, the battle between Savannah and Drew continued.
Savannah calls out, "Lairon, Metal Claw!
Lairon charges
Drew then calls out, "Use Hidden Power again!"
Masquerain launches the attack, which stops Lairon in its tracks.
"Lairon!" Savannah calls out.
Vivian says, "Hidden Power hits the target!"
As Vivian talks, Savannah's points decrease till they're nearly depleted as the timer ticks down to 26 seconds.
Vivian says, "With only seconds left, will Savannah make a comeback?"
The mom's group gets anxious, "I don't know who to root for!" "It's all quite confusing to me." Keep fighting, both of you!"
Savannah then calls out, "Go, Lairon, Shock Wave!"
Lairon charges in for the attack, but the timer hits 0 before it can be launched.
Vivian announces, "The timer has stopped and that means the battle is over for Savannah and Lairon! The winner of the Rubello Town R1 Contest is Drew!"
As Vivian talks, Drew's picture along with one of his Masquerain fill the scoreboard, declaring them the winners before the crowd cheers. Drew confidently chuckles while Savannah was left in surprise before realizing what had happened, only to shrug it off.
"Well, we tried," Savannah says, and kneels down to Lairon and pets it, "And you were fantastic, Lairon."
Drew approaches Savannah, "Savannah?" and extends his hand, "That was a great battle."
Savannah stands up and shakes his hand and accepts his handshake, "You're very sweet, Drew."
As the crowd cheered, the MFP were rather disappointed to see that one of their own lost.
Later, the closing ceremony was underway.
Vivian announces, "To our winners, Drew and Masquerain, we present the Rubello ribbon. Congratulations. That'll do it for us here at the Rubello Town R1 Contest, the site where Drew has picked up his fourth ribbon. He's just one step away from qualifying for the Grand Festival. So to all of our audience here live in Rubello Town and those of you watching at home, thank you and farewell!"
Meanwhile, outside at the concession and merchandise stands, Team Rocket was finally open for business as the sun began to set
Jessie calls out, "Ladies and gentlemen, get your genuine super ribbon pillows while they're in stock!"
"Step right up! You won't find them anywhere else!" James calls out.
Meowth then says, "Get 'em quick before dey're all gone!"
But no one comes," and so they sulk, "Come on."
"Why aren't these awful things selling?" Jessie asks.
But then someone calls out, "Begging your pardon, but could you help me with a ribbon?"
Team Rocket looks and sees it was the woman who bought Jessie's original fake ribbon.
Jessie turns to the girl, "I can! How many would you like?"
The woman says, "Actually, it's about the ribbon I bought from you earlier today. As you can see, it's much too big for Azurill, so...am I supposed to use it for something else, or do I have to ask for a refund?
Jessie says in thought, "Oh, no! It was our only sale!"
"Figures," James says.
"I tell you, retail's brutal," Meowth says
"Wobbuffet!" (No kidding!) Wobbuffet says.
Later that night, at the Pokémon Center, our heroes, Savannah and Sandra were sitting down to dinner.
"You got to admit, Drew was pretty incredible," Tomo says.
Too bad you had to find out the hard way, Savannah," Zinnia says.
"I suppose. Just the same, I had a lot of fun," Savannah says.
"But aren't you bummed out that you didn't win, mom?" Sandra asks.
"Of course, I would've loved to have that ribbon, but then again, I didn't want it so much that I would take for granted the one ribbon I already have. It always reminds me of my very first victory. This ribbon is proof of how well my Pokémon did. How Flareon and Lairon and I worked together. And now, I'm happy just thinking about that perfect day, not whether I win or lose this time," Savannah says.
"I know what you mean. When I got my badges for the first time, they reminded me of how hard my Pokemon and I worked together as a team. Same with my contest ribbons. Sure I did want to win, but I'm glad my Pokemon and I get to experience it, and it also helps us to work harder as well, whether we win or lose. To me, my ribbons and badges are memories of how hard my Pokemon and I train together and work together as a team," Mew says.
May opens her ribbon case to see her two ribbons, "You're right. These ribbons are proof of how well my Pokémon did. And now, I'm never gonna take them for granted ever again,"
May then turns to Savannah, "Hey, Savannah, I really hope we meet again someday in another contest."
"I agree, May. I look forward to that day. Thanks," Savannah says.
May and Savannah shake hands.
"Well, May, looks like you found another rival," Jen says.
"That's what makes training a Pokémon fun," Mew says.
"Just keep giving it 100%, ladies," Brock says.
"Of course," May and Savanna say.
"I'm not sure about that 100%, Brock. Mom does have to save time for all that housework, right?" Sandra says and looks at Savannah and winks.
Savannah blushes, "Actually, that's what daughters are for."
As May and Mew's contest experience draws to a close, May discovers that even a defeat can be a learning experience. So, as the gang continue their journey, they'll all keep this lesson in their hearts forever.
