Chapter 8: Convergence and Clash
The sleek elevator doors slid open, revealing the opulent interior of the Paradius penthouse. Li Cu stepped out first, followed by Quin Yang, and then Su Wan, who still moved with a careful, deliberate grace. The panoramic windows offered a breathtaking view of Hangzhou, a sprawling tapestry of lights against the twilight sky. The contrast between the city's vibrant energy and Su Wan's fragile state was palpable.
"It's… extravagant," Su Wan murmured, his voice laced with awe and a hint of unease. He trailed a hand along a polished marble table, his fingers lingering as if searching for something solid to ground him.
Li Cu nodded, a flicker of suspicion in his eyes as he scanned the room. "Paradius has resources. More than I initially realized." He couldn't shake the feeling that this luxurious setting was a facade, hiding something darker beneath its gleaming surface.
Quin Yang, ever composed, surveyed the room with a keen eye, his expression unreadable. "It is a fitting space for important discussions. Or perhaps," he added, his gaze lingering on Li Cu, "for something else entirely."
As they settled into the lavish living area, the atmosphere shifted. Su Wan's expression turned serious, the earlier wonder replaced by a quiet determination.
"There's something I need to tell you both," he began, his voice steady but laced with a hint of sorrow. "About my brother… Alister."
Li Cu and Quin Yang listened intently as Su Wan recounted his fragmented memories. The happy childhood, the tragedy that struck their family after their father remarried, the loss of their mother and youngest sibling. The pain of those losses was etched on Su Wan's face, a shadow clinging to his usually bright eyes.
"And then… Alister disappeared," Su Wan finished, his voice barely a whisper. "I never knew why."
Li Cu's brow furrowed, a knot of concern tightening in his chest. "That's… I've heard rumors," he said slowly, "that Alister might be connected to Paradius." The air in the room seemed to thicken, the opulent setting suddenly feeling oppressive.
Quin Yang's gaze sharpened, his hand instinctively moving to the hilt of the sword at his side. "Connected how?"
Before Li Cu could elaborate, a sudden commotion erupted outside. The distant wail of sirens grew closer, then alarms blared from somewhere within the building. A fleet of vehicles screeched to a halt in front of the penthouse, their headlights cutting through the twilight. The reinforced doors of the penthouse burst open with a metallic groan, and Wu Xie, supported by his crutches, emerged, his face pale but resolute. Behind him were Declan Akaba and the Lancers, their expressions a mix of concern and battle-readiness.
"Li Cu! What's going on?" Wu Xie demanded, his voice strained. "We received a distress signal."
Declan Akaba's eyes scanned the scene, taking in the opulent surroundings, Li Cu's conflicted expression, and Quin Yang's watchful stance. "Paradius," he murmured, his voice low and calculating. "This is their base of operations?"
As the various factions converged, the air crackled with tension and unspoken questions. All eyes turned to the shattered windows as a blinding violet flash filled the room, momentarily obscuring everything in an intense light. When their vision cleared, a figure materialized in the center – Missy, her eyes burning with cold fury, her presence radiating an unsettling energy. Two Obelisk Force soldiers stood silently behind her, their faces masked and emotionless.
"So," Missy hissed, her voice dripping with venom, the word slicing through the tense atmosphere like a knife, "you plan to go to the Synchro Dimension? I'm afraid I can't let you do that."
The wind howled through the shattered windows, carrying the scent of rain and the distant sounds of chaos from the streets below. The battle for Hangzhou had begun.
Duel Commences
"This will be an Action Duel," Declan Akaba announced, his voice firm, taking command of the situation. "Lancers, prepare yourselves!"
"Obelisk Force," Missy commanded, her voice sharp, "eliminate the intruders!"
The Obelisk Force soldiers moved with unsettling speed and coordination. Two of them, one clad in red armor and the other in green, stepped forward to face Moon Shadow and Riley.
Duelists:
Obelisk Force (Red and Green): 4000 LP
Moon Shadow and Riley: 4000 LP
"And remember the rules of this duel," the Red Obelisk Force soldier said, his voice distorted by his helmet's vocoder. "You will share your Life Points, field, and Graveyard zones."
Declan Akaba's eyes narrowed. "An interesting handicap. But it won't deter us."
"Action Field, Activate!" Reiji declared, his voice echoing through the penthouse as the room transformed. Holographic structures rose from the floor, creating a virtual cityscape of twisting alleyways and crumbling buildings – the Castle of Chaos.
"I will go first," the Red Obelisk Force soldier announced, drawing his cards with a flourish.
Turn 1
"I shall set one card," he said, placing a card face-down on the field. (Ancient Gear Reborn) "And then set one more card." (Fusion Trench) He placed another card face-down.
"Next, I summon Gradius in Attack Mode!" A sleek, mechanical ship appeared on the field.
(Gradius: ATK 1200 / DEF 800)
(Card info pop-up appeared above the monster)
"Then, I end my turn."
The Green Obelisk Force soldier stood motionless, his posture rigid.
Riley drew his cards, his eyes darting around the Action Field. "My turn," he said, his voice slightly trembling.
"I set one card," he announced, placing a card face-down. (Photo Frame)
His gaze then fell upon an Action Card lying on a holographic rooftop nearby. With a burst of speed, he grabbed it, adding it to his hand. (Evasion)
"Next, I activate Shutter Layer 1!" A holographic camera lens appeared, focusing on Gradius.
"It takes a screenshot of Gradius," Riley explained, "and then I pass."
Moon Shadow observed the field, his expression calm but focused.
Turn 2
The Green Obelisk Force soldier drew his card.
"I equip Gradius with Cyclone Laser!" A beam of energy connected with the ship, and its attack power increased.
(Gradius: ATK 1200 1500)
"Next, I summon my own Gradius in Attack Mode!" Another identical ship appeared beside the first.
(Gradius: ATK 1200 / DEF 800)
"Next, I set one card." (Ancient Gear Booster)
"Gradius, attack the copy!" The equipped Gradius fired a volley of lasers.
"Activate Action Card: Evasion!" Riley shouted, grabbing onto a holographic railing as the attack hit. The force of the blast propelled him upwards.
The Gradius copy began to levitate, following Riley.
"Gradius," the Green soldier commanded, "follow him!"
"Gradius copy levitated Riley up to grab another Action Card to the hand!" Riley yelled, his voice echoing through the virtual cityscape. (Miracle)
The Green Obelisk Force soldier ended his turn.
Moon Shadow drew his card, his eyes narrowing as he assessed the situation. He had drawn Copy Knight.
"I activate the Spell Card Reinforcement of the Army!" he announced. "This allows me to search my deck for a Level 4 or lower Warrior-Type monster. I select Twilight Ninja Kagen!"
He added the card to his hand.
"I set the Pendulum Scale with Kagen and Jogen!" Two pillars of light erupted, and the ninja appeared between them.
"Now then, as this samurai sword flies down and Sword of ninja slash and clash bring me a set of Ninja for honor, I Pendulum Summon Earth Armor Ninja!" A hulking ninja warrior materialized on the field.
(Earth Armor Ninja: ATK 1600 / DEF 1200)
"I then set one card." (Ninjutsu Art of Hazy Toad)
"Now then, I activate the card Riley set – Photo Frame!" Moon Shadow declared. "It copies Cyclone Laser!"
Earth Armor Ninja attacked the first Gradius.
"Not so fast!" the Green Obelisk Force soldier countered. "Go, Fusion Trench!"
He explained the card's effect. "Now, only Fusion Monsters can attack!"
Confusion flickered across Moon Shadow's face.
The Gradius ship flew past Earth Armor Ninja, forcing Moon Shadow to grab a nearby Action Card. (Evasion)
"Now then, I end my turn," Moon Shadow said.
Turn 3
The Red Obelisk Force soldier drew his card.
"Go! I equip Cyclone Laser onto the other Gradius, making it 1500 ATK!"
(Gradius: ATK 1200 1500)
"I pass," the Red soldier said.
Riley drew his card and glanced at Moon Shadow.
"I pass," Riley said, his voice hesitant.
Turn 4
The Green Obelisk Force soldier drew his card.
"I summon Ancient Gear Hunting Hound!" A mechanical hound appeared, its gears whirring.
"Take 600 damage, boys!" the Green soldier commanded.
(Moon Shadow/Riley: 4000 3400 LP)
(Obelisk Force: 4000 LP)
"Now, I end my turn."
Moon Shadow drew his card, his expression grim.
"I pass," he said.
Turn 5
The Red Obelisk Force soldier drew.
"I activate the Continuous Trap Card Ancient Gear Booster!"
"Then next, I end my turn."
Riley drew and discarded Life Transformation.
"I pass too," Riley said.
Turn 6
The Green Obelisk Force soldier drew.
"I tribute one of my Gradius in order to summon Ancient Gear Engineer!" A larger, more complex machine appeared on the field.
"And pass."
The Red Obelisk Force soldier drew and passed.
Riley drew and discarded Refusion.
The Red Obelisk Force soldier drew and passed.
Turn 7
Moon Shadow drew his card.
"Now then, I tribute Earth Armor Ninja to summon Gestuga, the Shogun!" A powerful samurai warrior materialized, his presence dominating the field.
(Gestuga the Shogun: ATK 2000 / DEF 3000)
"Now, I end my turn."
Turn 8
The Red Obelisk Force soldier drew.
"I Special Summon Gradius Option, and copy Gradius's stats!" Another ship appeared, mirroring the original.
(Gradius Option: ATK 1500 / DEF 800)
"Now then, I pass," the Red soldier said.
Riley drew and discarded Nightmare Critical Loop.
"I pass too," Riley said.
The Green Obelisk Force soldier drew and equipped Cyclone Laser onto Gradius, increasing its attack power.
(Gradius: ATK 1500 1800)
Turn 9
Moon Shadow drew his card.
"I activate Warrior Returning Alive to add back my Twilight Ninja Kagen!"
"Now, I Pendulum Summon Earth Armor Ninja and Air Armor Ninja!" Two more ninja warriors appeared on the field.
Suddenly, a blinding green light erupted from the shattered windows. A figure in dark armor materialized, wielding a glowing red lightsaber. It was the Grand Inquisitor. With terrifying speed and precision, he moved through the virtual cityscape, his lightsaber flashing. In a blur of motion, he struck down both Obelisk Force soldiers, their forms dissolving into data. Their duel disks deactivated, and their cards were ejected.
The Obelisk Force members' decks were then sent back to Academia.
The Lancers, Moon Shadow, and Riley stared in stunned silence. The suddenness and brutality of the attack left them speechless. Missy watched with a cold, calculating gaze, a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes. The atmosphere in the penthouse had shifted once again, the duel forgotten in the face of this new, terrifying arrival.
