Kylo was in his room, and though he was glad nothing extreme had happened with the hunter, fear still gnawed at him. He reached out to Luna, not wanting her to get hurt either. "Luna, I am scared. What if she gets me?" Kylo said in his head, hoping she could sense his anxiety.
Luna replied quickly. He loved that she wasn't ignoring him again. "Shh, my Kylo. It's okay. I will protect you always. Now get some sleep, okay? I will see you tomorrow," she said, her voice soothing his frazzled nerves.
Kylo closed his eyes as he fell asleep, he had no idea she could control him even in his mind but in this case he didn't mind. He trusted Luna now and he knew she would always keep him safe. Her words echoed softly in his thoughts, soothing his fears and wrapping him in a blanket of comfort.
After sharing a few moments of warmth with Skye, Chase knew it was time to check on everyone before they could truly relax for the night. They ascended the stairs, each step bringing them closer to the peaceful rest they both craved.
Chase quietly entered Kylo's room, finding him fast asleep. The sight of Kylo's serene face brought Chase a sense of relief. He gently adjusted the blanket around Kylo, ensuring his comfort and safety.
Skye moved on to the triplets' room, where she found them in various stages of sleep. She softly whispered assurances and tucked them in more securely.
Once their nightly routine was complete, Chase and Skye headed to their own room. As Chase settled in beside Skye, he murmured, "Hard to believe we will have three more soon."
Skye chuckled softly, her eyes closing as she snuggled closer to Chase. "Yeah, I am not sure how I am going to handle seven kids," she said, the hint of a smile playing on her lips. "But I know we'll figure it out together."
Chase wrapped an arm around her, pulling her closer. "We always do," he whispered, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "And our family is worth every challenge."
With that comforting thought, they both drifted off to sleep, finding solace in each other's presence and the knowledge that their love and resilience would see them through whatever came next.
Skye's mind lingered on the events of the day as she lay beside Chase. "Chase, do I need to be worried if I send Kylo to school tomorrow? I know he is going to want to go," she said, her voice filled with concern.
Chase sighed softly, wishing he could reassure her completely. "Wild said she won't strike in public places. As long as he is not walking alone, he should be fine," he replied, trying to infuse his words with confidence.
Skye nodded, feeling a bit more at ease with Chase's reassurance.
With everyone asleep, Kylo began to thrash around in his bed, trapped in the clutches of a nightmare. His mind conjured a terrifying scene where the hunter had captured him. He struggled against invisible restraints, his breaths coming in short, panicked gasps. The fear was palpable, even in his unconscious state.
Luna, even from afar, could feel his stress. "Kylo, you're okay. It's not real, shh, it's okay. I am here, take deep breaths," she soothed in his mind.
"No please don't hurt me, please," Kylo said, even though he was still asleep, he was voicing this in his mind.
"No one is hurting you, Kylo, it's just a nightmare. You're okay, I am here," Luna replied softly.
As Luna's presence enveloped him, Kylo's thrashing ceased completely. His body relaxed, sinking back into the mattress, free from the grip of the nightmare. A serene expression replaced the earlier distress on his face, and his breaths flowed smoothly and evenly once more.
"Sleep now, Kylo. No more nightmares," Luna whispered in his mind, her voice a gentle lullaby that cradled his consciousness. She remained a vigilant guardian in his dreams, ensuring that no shadows could disturb his peace.
In the quiet of the night, Kylo found a calm harbor within the protection of Luna's unwavering care. He drifted into a deep, restorative sleep, safe in the knowledge that he was not alone.
The next morning the house was busy, with the smell of breakfast wafting through the air and the sound of laughter and chatter filling every room. Though Kylo was still peacefully asleep, the triplets were already up and running around like a whirlwind, their energy boundless.
"Kato! Don't jump on the couch," Skye called out, spotting one of her lively children attempting a precarious leap. She shook her head, a mix of exasperation and affection playing on her face as she navigated the morning chaos.
"Will one of you please go wake your brother? He has school," Skye said.
Taliyah took on the job eagerly. You can bet she was not going to do it gently; she loved tormenting her older brother. With a mischievous grin, she darted up the stairs and into Kylo's room. "Wake up, sleepyhead!" she yelled, flinging open the curtains to let in the bright morning light. "You're going to be late!"
Kylo groaned, pulling the covers over his head in a futile attempt to keep the morning at bay. "Go away, Taliyah," he mumbled, though he knew his sister well enough to realize she wouldn't be deterred so easily.
Taliyah, undeterred, jumped on the bed, bouncing up and down until Kylo had no choice but to surrender. "Alright, alright, I'm up!" he said, sitting up and rubbing his eyes. "You win."
With a triumphant laugh, Taliyah hopped off the bed. "Hurry up, Kylo. Breakfast is getting cold!" she called over her shoulder as she skipped out of the room, leaving Kylo to shake off the remnants of sleep and get ready for the day.
Kylo made his way downstairs, he was not looking forward to the day, all he wanted was to go to school but his parents were homeschooling him, at least that was what he thought. The smell of pancakes and bacon hit him as soon as he reached the bottom of the stairs, but even that couldn't lift his spirits.
"Good morning, Kylo," his mother said, placing a plate of food in front of him. "Did you sleep well?"
"Yeah, I guess," he muttered, poking at his breakfast with a fork. His mind was already drifting to the lessons he would have to endure; he missed the camaraderie of his friends at school and the structure the school day provided.
But as he took his first bite, he resolved to make the best of it. After all, his family was trying to do what they thought was best for him, and perhaps today would bring something unexpected.
As he sat there, lost in his thoughts, the sound of footsteps descending the stairs brought him back to reality. His father, Chase, appeared with a smile that seemed to hold a hint of a secret.
"You ready, bud? I'll take you to school," Chase said, his voice carrying an unusual note of excitement.
"Wait, what? I get to go?" Kylo asked, his confusion evident as he looked up, the fork pausing midway to his mouth.
"Yes," Chase replied, nodding. "The only reason we pulled you out was because we wanted to keep you from Luna. And, well, we were wrong. We realize you need her, so let's go."
Kylo's eyes widened in surprise and then lit up with joy. The day had taken a turn he couldn't have anticipated. Perhaps it would indeed bring something unexpected, something wonderful.
"Remember, stay with your friends and do not go off alone, okay? The hunter is still out there," Chase said to him, his voice taking on a serious tone. Kylo nodded solemnly, understanding the gravity of his father's words but still buoyed by the excitement of returning to school.
As soon as Kylo climbed out of the truck, he saw Luna and smiled—the one person he wanted to see the most. Her presence instantly brought comfort and a sense of normalcy to his otherwise turbulent day. Luna's face lit up as she spotted Kylo, and she ran over to greet him with a warm embrace.
"Kylo! I missed you so much," she exclaimed, her voice full of genuine happiness.
"Me too, Luna. It's so good to be back," Kylo replied, feeling a surge of gratitude for the unexpected turn his day had taken.
They quickly found Pearl and Cameron, who were waiting near the entrance.
"Hey, look who's back!" Cameron called out, waving energetically. Pearl grinned and joined them, her eyes sparkling with surprise and delight.
"Kylo, it's so great to see you!" she said, giving him a quick hug.
"Thanks, Pearl. I missed you all," Kylo replied, feeling a sense of belonging as he stood with his friends.
As they entered the school building, the friends chatted animatedly about everything Kylo had missed. Despite the lingering threat of the hunter, Kylo felt a renewed sense of hope and determination. With his friends by his side, he knew they could face any challenge that came their way.
Once inside, Kylo noticed Jack and Milly coming over to them. He didn't know how to feel about it. He looked to Luna for guidance; it was really weird how much he actually needed her. Luna gave him a reassuring smile and squeezed his hand lightly, signaling that everything would be alright.
As Jack and Milly approached, Kylo braced himself for what might come next. Jack, looking slightly uncomfortable, cleared his throat and began to speak.
"Hey Kylo, I wanted to say I am sorry. I realized bullying you was dumb. I'm glad you are okay though, and we'll try to keep Silas off your back," Jack said, his words genuine and filled with regret.
Kylo was taken aback by the apology but felt a huge weight lift off his shoulders. "Thanks, Jack. I appreciate it," Kylo responded, offering a small smile.
Milly stepped forward, her eyes soft with concern. "Hi Kylo," Milly said, this made Luna stiffen; she didn't know if she liked her.
"Hi Kylo," Milly said, her voice gentle yet firm. "I wanted to say that I'm also sorry for everything that happened. And... you should have lunch with us today. We could catch up and maybe start over?"
Kylo, still processing Jack's apology, felt a mixture of emotions. He glanced at Luna, who was watching Milly intently, her expression unreadable.
"I, um, don't know," Kylo replied, his voice uncertain. He couldn't read Luna's feelings and desperately wanted her to be okay with it.
"Come on, unlike you we don't bite," Milly teased, trying to lighten the mood.
Kylo looked to Luna again. She spoke in his mind, "It's your choice," she said, but he could tell she didn't want him to.
"Thanks, but I am having lunch with my friends," Kylo said, his voice gaining a bit of confidence. He hoped Luna would approve of his decision. He waited for a response, feeling the tension in the air.
"Okay, well, maybe next time," Milly said, her tone a mix of disappointment and understanding. She took a step back, giving Kylo a small nod.
Jack nudged Milly gently, "Let's go. See you around, Kylo." They walked away, leaving Kylo and Luna standing together.
Kylo turned to Luna, searching her eyes for any sign of how she felt. "Was that okay?" he asked softly.
"What do you mean?" Luna asked, her tone a blend of curiosity and concern. She searched his face, trying to understand the depth of his unease.
Kylo hesitated, then took a deep breath. "I just... I want to make sure I didn't upset you. I know things have been tense, and I don't want to add to that."
Luna smiled gently, her eyes softening as she reached out to touch Kylo's arm. "Kylo, I'm not upset," she assured him, her voice steady and warm. "I'm trying to let you make your own choices. I don't want to control you. I know you feel like I need to, but you can make your own choices."
Kylo looked down, his thoughts swirling. "I, um, are you sure?" he asked, his voice filled with uncertainty.
Cameron stepped forward, his expression firm. "Dude, come on. You are your own person. She doesn't make up your mind for you."
Pearl interjected, nodding thoughtfully. "Well, technically, in a way she does. Kylo seeks guidance from Luna. So he will always want to make her happy. He can't really control it; his wolf is making the choice for him."
Cameron shook his head. "That is crazy, it's like his human side has no say in anything," Cameron said, frustration evident in his voice.
"It will right now both are still young, once Kylo matures he will be able to control it better but for now he relies a lot on Luna," Pearl said.
"How do you know all this?" Cameron asked, his curiosity piqued.
"I, um, like to read stuff, and, well, when Luna told me about Kylo, I became fascinated and I read a lot about the bond thing," Pearl explained, a hint of pride in her voice.
Cameron raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "So, what did you find out?"
Pearl smiled, taking a step closer. "It's all about the connection between the wolf and its human counterpart. The bond is incredibly strong, and it influences a lot of decisions, especially when they're young. As they grow older, they learn to balance and control it better. But right now, Kylo's wolf instincts are still very dominant."
"So, is Luna like his mate?" Cameron asked.
"Not necessarily," Pearl responded, shaking her head. "Like I said, he is not matured yet. But once he does, he will find his mate through smell. His mind is not ready for that yet," Pearl said, her tone patient and explanatory.
"Well, that's good. He is only eight," Cameron said, as the bell rang and they all needed to head to class.
"Kylo, remember to stay in your class, and I will come get you," Luna said to him.
Kylo nodded as he walked into his classroom and found a seat. He was not sure what he was going to do when Luna went to middle school; he was two grades behind her. How was that going to work? Kylo felt a pang of anxiety. Luna was his anchor, his guide through the complexities of both his human and wolf instincts. Without her, the days seemed daunting.
