CHAPTER SIX
Lavender walked through the halls trying to find the Herbology classroom. She was glad that she went up early in case she got lost on the way to class. She ran into a few of the students here and there, but she didn't want to bother anyone with her question. She finally was able to recognize a group of first years Gryffindors that she knew who were in her class. She followed them to the outside part of the school and to a greenhouse.
Lavender walked into the greenhouse and was met with different smells of the plants that were in there. She saw a woman with gray hair and brown eyes. She was covered in dirt probably from all the care taking of the plants. The woman finally turned around to notice the students that were standing there.
"Welcome. Welcome. I see that some of you came a tad bit early, but that is alright. I see that only the Gryffindors' first years are here. And a few seconds' years are also here. Well while you are here you can help me for a bit before everyone comes." She said as she walked over to the group. "Here put these gloves on that tables over there and make sure that everyone has one pair."
Some nodded their heads and took the gloves and went to do as the Professor said, while others just ignored her and continued to chat with each other. Lavender didn't know what to do, so she just went over to the other students who were placing the gloves on the table. She helped them until the table had gloves all over the place.
Once that was done a few more students from both Gryffindor and Hufflepuff came in from either breakfast or their rooms and stood at the tables with the gloves and continued to talk. Lavender saw that Remus has just walked into the greenhouse behind some Hufflepuffs. Lavender waved him over to an empty spot next to hers and they started to chat again. Class shortly began when everyone was there and accounted for, well maybe a few stragglers got there late, but they made it there nether the less.
"Hello. My name is Professor Sprout and I teach herbology. We are looking into number of plants and fungi. But for today we will be learning about Dittany. Does anyone know what a Dittany is" asked Professor Sprout?
A Hufflepuff girl with short blonde pigtails and freckles on her face raised her hand and waving it around frantically.
"Yes Miss Garderly."
"A Dittany another name is the burning bush, and it is used for potion-making" replied Miss Garderly.
"That is correct. 10 points to Hufflepuff. They are referred to as the Burning Bush because it sometimes releases flammable vapors. They are used for potion-making, scar healing and wand cores. A known potion would be the Wiggenweld potion."
The Professor continued to talk about other plants that would be used for several of potions. Lavender did her best to keep up with the lesson and write. Eventually class ended and lavender headed to her next class, Potions with the Slytherins. She didn't exactly know where to go, but she knew that she had to change the crest and went into an empty corridor and switched the tie. This isn't going to get old at all.She walked out of the corridor and went to see if there is any first year Slytherins to follow them.
Classes finished for the moment and Lavender was glad that it was finally break and she would be able to do homework and then go get lunch if she had time. So, she went to the library to get homework done before the next classes. She walked into the library and saw that there were rows after rows of shelves. Grabbing a book about Dittanies. It is interesting how Professor Slughorn didn't mention how she is part of two houses, but she guessed that no one really needed to know what was happening.
"Are you sure that we can find that type of book" asked a voice.
"Yes. The library has all types of books, but I think it might be in the restricted section because it is a harder type of spell" replied a different voice.
"Well then we can see if it the spell is in a different section, and if not then we can sneak in at night and try to enter" stated the first voice.
"Won't that be against the rules" asked the third voice.
"Well… Not if no one knows that we were there."
"Fine. So where should we start?"
"How about you look in one aisle."
"Alright James."
Lavender rolled her eyes and went back to her homework. But sadly, fate was going to be against her, and Sirius walked into the aisle she was working in.
"Well. Well. Well. Look who we have here," said Sirius.
"What do you want" Lavender asked?
"Nothing. So why do you hang out with Loopy? Is it because you feel bad?"
"I do not hang out with Remus because I felt bad, but because he is my friend and if you have a problem with that than you have me to deal with."
"Whatever." Sirius muttered under his breath. "Now where would I find that spell…No…No…No…Why do they not label the books."
"If you are looking for spells you are in the wrong aisle."
"And how would you know that?"
"Because each row has a category that each book is under."
"Oh…"
Lavender rolled her eyes and went back to work. While she was working, Remus came into the library and saw Lavender, but also saw Sirius.
"Hi Lavender," said Remus.
"Hey Remus. How were classes?"
"Oh, they were good. Interesting that is for sure."
"Well, that's good. I'm just trying to get my morning class homework done."
Lavender heard in the background Sirius snicker, probably at her comment, but she doesn't care for what he thinks. Lavender and Remus continued to continue just talking how their first morning went. Lavender could vaguely hear Sirius talking to, who she presumed to be James and Peter, about who knows what and she didn't want to really know.
"We should start heading to our next class" replied Remus.
"I guess we should. Luckily, I found the book I need for the Herbology homework. Let's go. I suggest you go as well, boys. Don't want to be late on your first day of school" Lavender said over her shoulder.
"Don't tell me what to do," shouted Sirius.
The librarian looked up and put her finger to her lips and shushed Sirius for shouting.
"Sorry" whispered Sirius.
Lavender laughed a bit at Sirius being told to be quiet. Lavender and Remus walked out the library and down the hall to where History of Magic was.
"How did you enjoy Potions with Slytherin? Did anyone question you about being in Gryffindor" Remus asked?
"No, but I'm guessing the one who was staring at me was the male and female Prefect. They gave me this stare that creeped me out. But other than that, everything was fine. I don't think they knew I was part of their house also."
"That is probably why you have classes with Slytherin and Gryffindor even though the rest of us only have a few classes with the Slytherins."
"That is true. It will be weird if I was to show up to a class with the Slytherins."
"I bet it would be."
History of Magic was indescribable. Lavender thought she would die of boredom if she didn't get out of the class soon. The teacher was a ghost named Professor Binns, who for one fell asleep every five minutes and second talked very slow and long when he was awake. However, must have died getting ready to fall asleep because why else would he be falling asleep during class.
It was time for lunch, so Lavender went up to her room to put whatever books she had with her and when she was about to go back down, she remembered that she had the three letters from her family. She opened the letter from her siblings and read.
To our Little Sister,
Wow not only did you get into Gryffindor but also Slytherin. Mother was sent an owl after the feast. We are kind of surprised. Meg and I had a bet. I bet that you would be put into Ravenclaw and Meg bet that you would be put into Slytherin. I guess Meg was partially right. Ugh she won't let me hear the end of it. Well, I guess Mother has sent you a letter along with Uncle Nellon. Never liked that guy, so annoying. Good luck
Love,
Your Brother Nate
Lavender put Nate's letter aside and picked up mother's letter. This will be great.
Dear Lavender Ambrosius
It seems you have done something on your first day. Somehow getting into two houses. I don't think that is possible. But my sister has stopped me from bringing you straight home. Other than that, your father is proud that you got into his house, Slytherin. Don't do anything to get yourself in trouble.
From,
Your mother.
Lavender had to roll her eyes at her mother's comment about her coming straight home. She turned to the last letter. The one from her aunt.
Dear My Darling Niece,
I am proud of you to get into two houses. Though I had to convince my sister not to bring you home just yet, because it took very long to convince her that you will be fine. Just remember to not get caught.
Love,
Aunt Nella
Of course, they would talk about the same thing without even sounding genuinely proud of her. Even though her aunt did say she was proud, she knew she was only saying that to get on her nerve because she knew Aunt Nella didn't really care.
