The Next Day at Beacon Academy – Team RWBY's Dorm Room
The sunlight poured in through the windows of Team RWBY's dorm room as the academy came alive with the usual morning routines. Yang was stretching, Weiss was already deep into her book, and Blake, as usual, was quietly sipping her tea. Ruby, however, sat on her bed, staring at Crescent Rose, her thoughts miles away from the weapons maintenance she was supposed to be doing.
She hadn't slept much. The events of the previous day kept replaying in her mind. Jaune—no, Krauser—his secret transmission, the weapons stash, the conversation about Cinder, Mercury, and Emerald. It all swirled together, making her feel uneasy. But she couldn't let her teammates know. Not yet. Not until she figured out what to do.
Ruby shook her head and forced a smile, glancing over at Yang. "So... training later?" she asked, her voice light, trying to sound normal.
Yang glanced over at her, raising an eyebrow. "You okay, Rubes? You seem... kinda out of it this morning."
Ruby's heart skipped a beat, but she quickly waved her hand dismissively. "Oh, no, no! I'm fine! Just, uh, stayed up late working on Crescent Rose. You know how it is!"
Blake looked up from her tea, her amber eyes narrowing slightly, studying Ruby with quiet curiosity, but said nothing.
Weiss flipped another page in her book, her attention seemingly elsewhere, but Ruby could tell she had noticed something was off, too. After years of being teammates, they all had a way of picking up on each other's moods.
Ruby forced herself to focus. She had to pretend everything was normal. She couldn't let anyone suspect that she knew anything about Jaune's secret. If she acted weird, it might get back to him, and the last thing she wanted was to confront him before she understood what was really happening.
Yang grinned, standing up and stretching. "Well, if you're up for training, I was thinking we could try some new combo moves today. You in, Ruby?"
Ruby nodded enthusiastically, her forced smile feeling stiff. "Yeah, totally! Sounds awesome! Just let me finish up here, and I'll be ready to go."
Weiss finally glanced up from her book. "You did seem distracted this morning. Are you sure you're fine?" she asked, her tone sharp as usual, but there was concern laced within her words.
Ruby's heart raced again. She couldn't crack. Not now.
"I'm fine! Promise!" Ruby insisted, her voice a little too cheery. She quickly grabbed Crescent Rose and stood up. "Let's get going before breakfast rush starts! I'm starving!"
Yang shrugged, satisfied with Ruby's response, and headed toward the door. "Alright, let's go, then! Can't train on an empty stomach."
Blake and Weiss exchanged glances but followed Yang out of the room.
Ruby lingered behind for a moment, taking a deep breath, trying to shake off the feeling of guilt twisting in her stomach. Her friends couldn't know—no one could. She had to act normal, at least until she could figure out what to do next.
As they walked down the hallway towards the cafeteria, Ruby spotted Jaune up ahead, walking with Ren and Nora. For a split second, her breath hitched, and her stomach tightened. Jaune. Krauser. The secret Jaune she'd overheard.
He caught sight of her, giving her a warm smile and a wave. "Hey, Ruby!"
Ruby's face brightened into a big, wide smile—one that felt so fake it hurt. "Hey, Jaune!" she called back, her voice as cheerful as ever, but inside, she was screaming.
As they passed each other, Ruby's mind raced. She tried her hardest to pretend nothing had happened, but every time she looked at him, all she could see was that secret compartment, the weapons, and the cold, serious tone in his voice during that transmission.
Her smile never faltered, but inside, Ruby was struggling. I can't let him know. Not yet.
"Let's grab some food!" Ruby said quickly, hurrying ahead of her team as they walked into the cafeteria.
But no matter how hard she tried, Ruby knew that pretending nothing had happened wouldn't be easy. Every time she saw Jaune, the weight of that secret felt heavier, and the questions she couldn't ask threatened to spill over.
The cafeteria was buzzing with its usual noise, the clattering of trays, and the chatter of students. Ruby was still lost in her thoughts, trying her hardest to maintain her cheerful facade when Velvet approached.
"Hey, guys, how are you all doing?" Velvet's soft, slightly nervous voice pulled Ruby back to the present. Ruby turned to see the rabbit Faunus standing there, her usual timid smile on her face. "I... well, I was wondering if Ruby could help me with some engineering notes for my weapon. Could you please follow me?"
Ruby blinked, a little surprised by the request, but she quickly nodded. "Sure, Velvet! I'd love to help!" she said, jumping at the opportunity to get away from the cafeteria and, more importantly, away from Jaune.
Velvet smiled in relief, her ears twitching slightly. "Thank you, Ruby. It won't take long."
Ruby followed Velvet through the halls, trying to focus on the request and push aside the swirling thoughts in her mind. Velvet was known for her weapon, Anesidora, a camera that could replicate any weapon she had captured in her lens.
Ruby had always admired her creativity, so helping her out would be a nice distraction, or so she thought.
As they reached the library, the quiet shelves stretched out before them, filled with dusty books and the scent of old paper. Velvet led Ruby deeper into the back, to a more secluded area, which Ruby thought was odd but didn't question.
Suddenly, without warning, the bookshelf behind them slid closed with a loud thud, sealing them in the room.
Ruby spun around, eyes wide. "W-What's going on?!"
Velvet's demeanor changed instantly. The shy, timid expression melted away, replaced by a cold seriousness that Ruby had never seen in her before. Her posture straightened, and she looked at Ruby with an intensity that caught her off guard.
Before Ruby could speak, Cardin stepped out from behind another shelf, his usual smug grin nowhere in sight. His eyes were hard, his shoulders tense. He wasn't the bully Ruby knew from initiation—he was something else now, something calculated.
"Cardin?" Ruby's voice cracked with confusion. "What are you doing here?"
Before he could respond, Miss Goodwitch entered the room, her heels clicking softly against the wooden floor. She was without her usual crop, her commanding presence still powerful but more subtle. Walking beside her was Jaune—his expression serious, his eyes meeting Ruby's without hesitation.
Ruby's breath caught in her throat. "Jaune?"
The tension in the room thickened, and Ruby's mind raced, trying to piece together what was happening. Velvet, Cardin, Miss Goodwitch, and Jaune—all in this hidden part of the library, and all looking at her with knowing expressions.
Velvet spoke first, her voice calm but firm. "Ruby, we need to talk."
Ruby stepped back, her hand instinctively reaching for Crescent Rose, but she hesitated. These were people she knew—or thought she knew. "What is this? Why are we trapped here?"
Miss Goodwitch folded her arms, her tone gentle but authoritative. "You overheard something yesterday, didn't you, Miss Rose?"
Ruby's heart dropped. They knew. They knew she had been listening to Jaune's transmission. She had tried so hard to pretend everything was normal, but it wasn't enough.
Jaune stepped forward, his blue eyes locking onto hers. His voice was calm, but Ruby could hear the weight behind his words. "Ruby, I didn't want you to find out like this. But now that you know, we can't let you walk away without understanding what's really going on."
Ruby's throat tightened as she tried to process everything. "Jaune... what are you talking about? You've been lying to us? About everything?"
Jaune's face softened, but he didn't break eye contact. "It's more complicated than that. I didn't lie to you, Ruby. I'm still Jaune. But there's a mission—one bigger than Beacon Academy, bigger than all of us. And now, you're involved."
Cardin, his usual bravado absent, nodded in agreement. "This isn't about schoolyard stuff anymore. We're talking about threats that go beyond Grimm."
Miss Goodwitch stepped forward, her presence commanding attention. "Ruby, what you overheard was not meant for your ears, but now that you know, we have to bring you into the fold. Beacon is under threat, and we are part of a covert unit that has been monitoring it from within. Jaune, Velvet, Cardin, and I—we are part of this operation."
Ruby's head was spinning. The secret weapons, the transmission, now this? "You've all been hiding this... from everyone?"
Velvet nodded, her serious expression unwavering. "We had to. There are forces at play here that most students can't comprehend. If the wrong people knew, it could put the entire academy at risk."
Jaune took a step closer, his voice softening. "Ruby, I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I wanted to, but I couldn't. Not yet. Not until we knew we could trust you with this."
Ruby looked around the room, at each of their faces. These were people she had seen every day—fellow students, friends.
And yet, they had been living a completely different life, hiding in plain sight. She felt a mix of anger, betrayal, and confusion.
"What now?" Ruby whispered, her hands trembling slightly.
Miss Goodwitch exchanged a glance with Jaune before speaking. "Now, Ruby, we explain everything. And after that... you have a choice to make."
