All the time she had known Casey, April had never lied to him. Now, however, needs must and she had in fact not told him the truth. Luckily for her he had been called into a big investigation following the killings of more than a dozen people. He didn't go into details but when he had come home after the call out he looked a little disturbed by what he had seen. April, being the dutiful girlfriend and a journalist, had offered comfort alongside a few probing questions. The comfort had been readily accepted. The questions, however, were left unanswered. This had her feeling a little frustrated. There had to other perks to dating a cop apart from the uniform. So, rather than stress herself out, she left him to it and immediately got on the phone to a contact over at the prison where Sacks was being held. If he could hold back on her, she would do the same to him. It was a little bit childish but it made her feel better.
Her contact worked his magic and sorted out a visiting order in record time which was how she was now travelling towards said prison with Vern. They'd cleared it with the boss by telling her it was an interview, which technically it was. The boss was very much on board because nobody had spoken with Sacks since the whole tower incident so she wanted the dirt. Vern was a little more sceptical.
"I just don't see why you need to do this so bad O'Neil I really don't" He was driving the van out of the City at a much slower pace than she liked "Sacks is insane, he shot me last time I saw him, so why even head out here. I tell you I have my bullet proof vest in the back of this baby" He nodded towards the back of the van.
April rolled her eyes "Seriously?"
"Yes O'Neil, seriously. Besides your cop fella can't be happy with this little arrangement?"
"That's a leading question Vern" she paused and then decided to be honest "And besides he doesn't know so he can't disagree"
Vern turned his head to look at her "You are kidding me right?" His voice reached a pitch similar to Donnie's "You didn't tell him? Jeez, this just screams all kinds of wrong" The van started to drift to the side of the road.
"Vern can you drive please" April replied coolly.
"Oh shit" He pulled it back and shook out his shoulders.
"Just relax" she muttered "It will be fine, there are no guns".
It wasn't altogether truthful because at this prison there were a lot of guns and big ones at that. Guards took security very seriously at this prison. Vern seemed to notice every single gun and shudder telling her every single time that 'there was another one'.
They got through security without a hitch and after walking with two guards for what seemed like the longest time they were placed in a room which was separated by a glass panel. Vern seemed happy with this and comfortably set up his camera to the right of April.
"I can't believe they let me through with this and I can't believe Sacks agreed to this" He looked through the lens to check it and run a couple of test sets.
"Well he didn't at first but when he found out it was me he changed his mind"
Vern popped out from behind the camera "What a shocker that is" He looked April up and down. Dressed in a simple tailored suit, her brunette hair in waves around her face, she looked stunning. He had always admired her and even though he'd asked her out time and time again, she had always turned him down. Then came Casey Jones and she was off the market.
"Just film when I tell you and don't make any comments however much he might try to bait you"
"Bait me? What am I? A fish?" He shook his head "I won't get caught O'Neil don't you worry"
The door on the opposite side of the room opened and Eric Sacks stepped inside flanked by a large guard with a gun. This sight made Vern suck in a noticeable breath which April clocked but decided against a comment. She watched as Sacks sat down directly opposite her, his eyes never leaving hers for a second. The chair was scooted forward and he slowly smiled.
"April.." His voice gave her chills but she suppressed the urge to shudder "You look beautiful" The guard was hovering around which seemingly irritated Sacks, he glared at him "Can you move back? Miss O'Neil is here to see me not you" Surprisingly the guard did exactly that, the authority in Sacks voice obviously carrying impact. The guard took three steps back and settled in a corner. Another guard appeared by the door and looked through the glass before putting his back to it so all April could see was his hat and part of his closely shaved head.
As her eyes flitted back to the person sat in front of her she realised that Eric Sacks looked exactly the same. His thick head of hair was slicked back off his forehead and his skin was slightly tanned. It was almost like prison life suited him. The eyes though, they were still as cold as ice.
"When I was asked if I wanted to do an interview I would automatically turn it down. Do you know why?" He was looking at her intensely.
"No" she answered simply, not wanting to give him anything more. He smiled more broadly and lifted up his hands to point one finger at her. He was in handcuffs so the other hand came up too.
"I was waiting April. I knew you would come, one day, I just had to be patient. And in here time is the one thing you have plenty of"
She remained quiet and studied his face. This man had murdered her father because he had discovered what he was doing. This man had tried to murder her friends and he had tried to murder her. She steadied her nerves, determined to stay calm and in control.
"And you too of course" directly referring to Vern "I hope you will get my best side"
"I don't think you have one" began April "After all, you're a killer and I don't think they look good from any angle" She turned to Vern and nodded. That was his cue to start recording.
"Oh April, that's not a good way to start is it? You are the one who wanted to see me so let's move away from the nasty jibes shall we and be civil"
Her insides were knotting and she felt sick. "You're right" she kept her eyes on his "So why don't you tell me what you are?"
He grinned and leaned back in the chair "Nice question.." He went to rub his chin "Well I would say I am misunderstood, yes, that is what I am" He leaned forward towards her "A bit like your large green friends" He paused "And how are they? Still fighting crime?"
"Putting people like you out to pasture" answered April "But I'm not here to talk about them, I'm here to talk about you"
"Of course. I do assume you'll be editing this as obviously not everyone knows about your mutants and we wouldn't want to scare them now would we?" He raised his eyebrows "Though I do believe NYPD have a deal with them which surprised me"
"They got the keys to the City" April remembered that day so clearly - they were all so proud.
Sacks laughed "Next you'll be telling me they are running for office". Choosing to ignore that comment April pushed forward and for the next fifteen minutes she asked all the right questions and Sacks gave all the right answers. Deciding now was the time she placed one of the laboratory notebooks on the table along with the only photograph of the other, so far un-named, mutant.
"What do you know about this?"
He looked down and looked up "Nothing. It appears to belong to your father.. I'd recognise that scribble he called handwriting anywhere"
Though the comment stung April pressed forward and continued to with opening the notebook. She turned the pages studying Sack's face for any reaction "There are more of these but my friend has them". It was now or never: "Tell me about the girl Eric".
He closed his eyes and chuckled "Girl, what girl?".
"You know very well what girl. The one you created before, the one you kept hidden over on Eastside in a fake apartment.."
His eyes were open now and locked onto hers "Sorry April I have no idea what you are talking about".
"Oh cut the crap!" April could feel herself getting annoyed. Vern knew that she was starting to break and was already thinking of some excuse as to why there would be a sudden stop in the recording, the boss could not see this...She would have a fit and April would be unemployed.. again.
"You had a deal with Kraang, you had the purple mutagen, you were going to make an army for him weren't you but it didn't work out so you hid her away".
Sacks looked at April for a moment, silently studying her face. She almost thought he was going to crack, that he was going to come clean and tell her everything. Instead, he burst out laughing. April shifted in her seat, she felt extremely uncomfortable and considerably warmer. He was playing with her and enjoying it.
"You know I'm right Eric and once we find her we will get enough dirt on you to make sure you get much more than just a cushy cell"
He stopped laughing and leaned forward "Oh c'mon April, you have nothing and you know it".
"We know the building on East was part of the operation at the other lab - the one I never went to as a kid - we know it was TCRI and we have met the girl, the girl that is in this photograph and in this book" she jabbed a finger onto the page "You have no soul, doing what you did to all these lives, messing with nature and playing God"
"April you are the one who is friends with mutants if that is all you are to them... with them" She knew exactly what he was implying. He smirked at her "I've paid for my crimes which is why I'm in here. I know nothing of that book, that picture or this girl you speak of. If you father had a secret lab then that was his doing so you are blaming the wrong man"
"My father had a heart, he was a good man, he would never...not without cause and not without you" she couldn't hide the bitterness in her voice or the fact that she was now visibly shaking. Vern could see it too. April was losing it.
"Stop lying to yourself April, your father was just as guilty as me" Sacks lowered his voice "I only shot him because instead of having balls he suddenly got a conscience" He sat back in the chair "Besides you're the one who left him to burn, choosing instead to release your pets" He spat the last word out and smiled "Your father was weak".
April sucked in a breath and closed her eyes. She felt a light touch her arm as Vern appeared beside her, he was crouching down, his eyes full of pity: "Let's wrap this up O'Neil, the man's a coward, he's not worth it".
"No" Tears pricked her eyes "I am not leaving until he admits to what he did". Turning away from Vern she once again looked at Sacks who was still smiling.
"She's free from that lab, she's out Eric, who knows - maybe she'll come pay you a visit" Her veil of sadness shifted and so did his smile. It dropped off his mouth and he almost visibly paled. "How many years did you keep her locked up? Having her examined, nobody saying a thing as she was repeatedly raped.. she's gonna have a lot of rage. Especially against the man that made her in the first place".
Eric Sacks stood up "I'm done".
"Hit a nerve have I?" April also got to her feet "Vern's right"
"I am?" Vern raised his eyebrows.
"You are a coward"
Sacks didn't look at her again, instead he muttered something to the guard in the room who nodded and tapped the door twice with a knuckle. They waited by the door until the guard on the outside opened up and then they all disappeared from sight.
"Damn him" hissed April, a tear running down the side of her face, she quickly wiped it away "He's got away with it, again". Vern extended an arm to give her a hug.
"It'll catch up with him eventually" said Vern, feeling her relax into him.
"I hope so Vern, I really hope so"
Beyond the room, just inside the corridor Eric Sacks felt a mixture of emotion. As the guards had tried to take him back to his cell he had shook them off and demanded a phone call. He was furious that April O'Neil had come to him armed with all this information. He was shocked that something had obviously happened over on Eastside and nobody had told him. And most of all he was afraid. If she was right and the girl was out then he could be in trouble. This girl was smart and she was powerful. If she was out the whole City could be in trouble; maybe even the world. Christ. He suddenly felt clammy and his chest felt tight. Lord he wished he'd had her terminated when he'd had the chance. Stupidly his ego had taken over because she was a miracle. She had lived.
The guards were joined by a third who stood a few feet away and eyeballed him.
"Where the fuck is my phone call?" hissed Sacks, unable to hide the rising panic in his voice.
The man offered a simple dip of the head as the other two applied pressure either side to move Sacks forward "I need that call and I need it now".
"Why so desperate Eric?" The prison warden stepped out to stand beside the third guard, arms folded across his chest "Is there something I should know?"
