Chapter 4

"Johnny!" I shouted. "What are you doing here?"

"I heard your window opening, I didn't know where you were going I decided I follow you."

"Janets gonna kill us!"

I looked over my shoulder at Dallas and the little girl, they were both wide eyed with fear.

"Johnny, this is Dallas and um, I didn't get your name," The little girl look up at Dallas almost for approval. Dallas nodded and she stepped forward shyly.

"My name is Racheal Winston," She said, slowly gaining confidence with each word.

"Well, nice to meet you guys, but Jackie we need to go," Johnny said as the rain started pouring down harder and harder. I shivered. "Jackie c'mon, I don't want you to catch a cold." Johnny put his arm around my shoulders in a effort to warm me up, surprisingly he was smart and was wearing a jacket.

I pushed his arm away as I said firmly, "No! I'm staying to help them. Can't you see they don't have anywhere to stay! Please Johnny I dont want them to get cold! They need to go far far away, and-," I paused. "I want to go with them."

"No!" Johnny said. "You ain't gonna follow some troublesome boy and his cousin away, you could get hurt." His voice was firm, which was unusual for Johnny who was usually happy-go-lucky.

"Then you can come with us," "Leave a note for Janet, Oh please Johnny please!"

I don't know what had come across me in the past few minutes. I mean wanting to follow strangers I didn't even know, how stupid is that. But something inside me felt like this was the right choice. Something inside felt like this would be something my Mother would do. She would help anyone, even risk her life for strangers. The thought of Mother brought tears to my eyes. As awkward as it was arguing with my brother in front of two complete stranger, I knew what I wanted to do was the right thing. "Please Johnny," I said my voice breaking. I wasn't sad, though I felt like my Mother was right next to me and on my side. Johnny looked at me, I could tell he was thinking of Mother.

"Ok," "But I'm coming with you," He turns to Dallas. "You said you needed to go far away right?" Dallas nodded. "There's a train station about 3 miles away, we can see if there are any trains going to Colorado. I need to go and grab some money and leave a note for Janet at home. Stay here I will be back soon." Then Johnny ran off into the pouring rain. Dallas, Rachael and I took that as a chance to get to know each other. For all we know we will be running away together, well I was helping them run away. Rachael started, "Um, well I'm 9 years old, I'm an orphan. and I'm sick, sometimes I cant breathe….," she trailed off. Dallas looked at Rachael with a sadness in his eyes that I knew all to well. Rachael was very small and thin with big blue eyes and shiny blonde hair, she looked like a doll. Dallas went next, "Im, 14 almost 15, I get in trouble a lot. My dad lives in New York and my mom is dead. Oh, and some people call me Dally,"

"Well, I ain't gonna call you Dally, I doesn't suit you," I said a bit to rudely. Dallas side eyed me. This guy is nothing but trouble, but I guess thats why I'm helping him. I sighed and scrunched the water out of my hair. We sat in silence for a few minutes waiting for Johnny to come back. About 5 minutes later we heard footsteps running through the puddles. Johnny came into sight a couple seconds later with a small paper bag drenched with water.

"Hurry…theres….a….train..leaving..the..station…in..a…hour….its…a..freight!" Johnny said out of breath, pausing after every word, trying to catch his breath.

We stood up and started our way to the train station. It was only 5 blocks down the way according to Dallas who passed it on their way to the alleyway. Though we were trying to hurry up, the rain slowed us down. The first few blocks were ok, but I was already tired from walking to the alleyway, not to mention it's the middle of the night. It must be at least 11 o' clock by now! The last block was torture, my feet were dragging on the wet sidewalk. Johnny and Dallas were in the front and Rachael was sleeping on Dallas's back. We arrived a few minutes later, the station was empty. We walked down the side of the track, the gravel crushing beneath our feet. We didn't want to get noticed by the train driver, so we were going to hop onto one of the train cars while it was moving. We saw the train slowly leave from the station. We ducked down and ran toward one of the open cars. First Johnny ran on, then Dallas gave Rachael to Johnny then jumped on. The train was starting to speed up. I tried to run faster, but my legs wouldn't let me. So..tired.

"Jackie!" Johnny yelled, not worrying about getting caught.

"I'm…trying," I said panting.

Dallas reached out his hand out of the side of the train car. I was so close. I started to run faster. With a final burst of speed I grabbed Dallas's hand and he pulled me on the train. I just layed there. I tried everything I could to move but I was to tired. Someone was trying to talk to me, but I couldn't hear then, I was already sleeping.
