"Hayato, are you okay?" Izuku knocked on his best friend's door, hoping for a response from the boy inside of the room. After a moment of silence, he sighed and took out his phone to see the time. It was almost midnight and he should've been in bed already, but the events of the meeting had left him shook up. He needed to try to communicate with Hawks soon to see why he would have him and Fumikage be part of such a dangerous mission...but then again, that was the life of a hero. He sighed and tried calling out to Hayato one more time, but he got no response again. Deciding against his better judgement, he tried the doorknob and was surprised to see the door was unlocked. "Hayato?"
Peeking his head inside, Izuku looked around to see if Hayato was asleep and turned on his phone's flashlight just in case. But his eyes widened when he saw that his bed was empty and his blanket was thrown to the other side of the bed like he ran out of it. He quickly closed the door and began to run around the hallway, now even more worried about him. When they arrived earlier: Hayato had been eerily silent. He remembered how silent he was when Kazuma passed away and after their first encounter with Blitz too. Was the news about Eri and Sorahiko too much for him to bear? Did he feel even more guilty about the little girl's situation now that he knew what she was going through? Was he angry with himself like when the USJ incident happened and he wasn't there to help them? Where could he have gone?
Izuku hurried up to the fifth floor, wondering if maybe he had gone to Momo's room for advice. But when he neared Yaoyorozu's door, he was surprised to see the girl standing worriedly in front of it.
"Yaoyorozu?"
"Midoriya. What are you still doing awake at this hour?" Momo asked, surprised to see Izuku was still awake as well.
"I can ask you the same thing."
"I was...looking for Hayato." Momo admitted, crossing her arms as Izuku sighed.
"You too?"
"Uraraka and Tsuyu told me about him suddenly going quiet and distant earlier, so I wanted to see if he was okay. But he wasn't there so I assumed he was with you."
"I thought he was with you."
"Then where could he be? You don't think he left campus, do you?" Momo asked and Izuku shook his head.
"He's not crazy enough to do something like that. He knows how much trouble he could get in if he did that."
"So then he has to be somewhere on campus..." Momo muttered as she began to think. Where could Hayato go at this hour that he would get in the least amount of trouble for being at? "He has to be somewhere gathering his thoughts. He usually does his best thinking by-"
"Running." Izuku said raising a finger and Momo nodded. "But the gyms are all locked and if he was running outside of the dorm: we would've seen him already." Izuku said as he looked outside to see if Hayato was running beside the dorm.
"And he wouldn't want to be somewhere where a teacher would see him, so that just leaves the training grounds." Momo said, snapping her fingers when it clicked. "I know where he is."
'Damn it. One more time.' Hayato let out a deep breath, wiping the sweat dripping from his face as he stood up. He came to Ground Beta to get some practice in to gather his thoughts. Lying in bed was doing him no favors, so he decided his best option was to train a bit to think and burn all of the energy he had in his body at the moment. He closed his eyes, pushing the power of One for All through his body as he readied himself. He leapt into the air, spinning as he reeled his right leg back. He kicked it forward as fast he could, smiling when the force of his kick created a powerful burst of wind. He landed on the ground and chuckled as he silently celebrated that he was able to do what he and Izuku did during their license exam by himself.
"Hayato!" He turned around, hearing Momo and Izuku's voices call for him, and watched as the two most important people in his life ran towards him.
"What are you two-"
"Forget about us. What are you doing here?" Momo asked him as she ran ahead of Izuku to talk to him first.
"I'm sorry. I needed to clear my head a bit." Hayato sighed as he sat down on the ground. Momo knelt down to his height and placed a hand on his, while Izuku sat down next to him and put a hand on his shoulder.
"Wanna talk about it?" Izuku asked, expecting him to say no, but the boy smiled and nodded.
"I've been worried about my grandpa. I know he's tougher than concrete, but it's hard when you know you're not the only person who's worried too. My mom is a wreck, Mira's a mess, and only my dad and I are the only ones who are trying to stay strong for them." Hayato started, looking up at the clear night sky as he began to explain his thoughts to them. "Seeing how the League has him, and now that he's in the Shie Hassaikai's hands too...this mission means more to me than it would've before. And Eri too..."
"You know we're not allowed to share details about this with anyone, right?" Izuku whispered, pointing at Momo who looked at him offended.
"Midoriya! I thought after everything we've been through: you would have more faith in me!"
"It's okay, Izuku. I know she won't tell anyone anything. Eri is going to be my biggest chance to make up for my lack of action. I couldn't help you guys during the USJ incident. What happened on I-Island was a team effort and we jumped to action immediately. But Eri...I had her in my hands and I let her go. Now that I know she's in danger...I'm going to get her and my grandfather back, and I'm going to make sure that monster Chisaki rots in prison with Blitz in the cell next to him." Hayato said, clenching his fist tightly as he pictured holding Eri and Sorahiko's hands in his.
"Blitz? He's back?" Momo asked, shocked by what he said. Izuku nodded and stood up, extending a hand to him.
"We have to wait. When we're ready to go, you're going to have your chance." Izuku said with a reassuring smile, and Hayato smiled at him.
"Right. But, I have a favor to ask you." Hayato said as he stood up, helping Momo stand when he was up.
"Sure." Izuku nodded, expecting a simple favor like usual, but what he said caught the two of them by surprise.
"Fight me." Hayato said, making Momo and Izuku jump in surprise.
"What?" Izuku asked, narrowing his eyes at him.
"You can't be serious." Momo said and Hayato just turned his head, giving her a smirk when he looked at her.
"We used to spar together and the last time you fought me seriously was at the Sports Festival. I can't know where I stand compared to you if I don't stand against you." Hayato said before patting the side of Izuku's arm. "Come on. You have to admit you've been curious too."
"I guess you're right..." Izuku muttered, surprising Momo who jumped between them.
"Listen, we're already going to be in big trouble if we're caught here at this hour. Do you not realize we're basically dead if you two fight too?!" Momo protested against their fight, but a new voice surprised all of them.
"It's okay, Young Yaoyorozu. I will take the blame if they get in trouble." The three turned to see Toshinori walking up to them.
"All Might?" The three asked as he walked over and placed a hand on the two boys' back.
"I had a feeling the news earlier would've bothered you, but seeing how well you're taking it: I'm proud of you, Young Kiryuu." Toshinori said, smiling at his young student. "I saw you leave the dorm and decided to keep an eye on you. But your power seems to have grown exponentially, I'm genuinely surprised. Whatever training Nighteye has put you through, I have to commend him for it." Hayato looked down, realizing they never told him about what happened on I-Island.
"It's not just him."
"Then what is it?" Hayato took a step back, closing his eyes as he pushed One for All to his current limit once more. Toshinori watched as white energy began to spark off of Hayato and he began to disappear and reappear around them with the wind nearly knocking all of them off their feet. He stopped where stood before, letting out another deep breath as he looked at Toshinori once more. "Amazing...never in my wildest dreams could I imagine you'd be that fast, especially not this soon."
"Because some changes happened to my Quirk that day on I-Island that we never told you about." Hayato said, turning to Izuku who nodded and looked at his predecessor with a stern expression. "I have One for All now."
"What?" Toshinori asked as he looked at Izuku, seeing the boy's fierce stare as he couldn't believe this news. "But Young Midoriya...you-"
"Still have mine running at full power. I'm not running on embers like you were." Izuku said making Toshinori take a step back and place a hand on his head.
"How is this possible?"
"We don't know. The transfer happened when we were injured fighting Wolfram, and we've been vigilant to see if any changes happen to me like my strength or any of my other powers like Float begin to waver. And nothing has happened." Izuku explained as Hayato nodded in agreement.
"I see...so that makes you-"
"One for All's tenth user? Yeah."
"With the threat of All for One still here as well as Tomura Shigaraki still on the loose: I believe this is a wonderful turn of events." Toshinori said before remembering that they weren't alone...there was a fourth person he forgot was standing next to them. "Young Yaoyorozu! Please promise me you won't-"
"She knows." Hayato said, and Toshinori stared at him in disbelief. "She's my girlfriend and she was the one who helped me when I first realized I had these powers. Obviously, she's gonna tell her."
"But you know how big of a secret the existence of One for All is! I didn't even tell David about it and he's my best friend since College!" Toshinori countered, but Hayato responded by pointing at Izuku.
"Then yell at him too because Ochaco knows too." Now Momo and Toshinori turned their attention to Izuku who blushed from embarrassment.
"Et tu, Young Midoriya?!"
"I couldn't keep it from her! She's a big part of my life and I felt horrible lying to her still!" Toshinori's jaw dropped quickly from Izuku's reasoning and gasped hard enough that blood spewed from his mouth.
"It's okay, All Might. We know the dangers and we still support them. It's alright." Momo looked at All Might and placed a hand on his arm, making the older man sigh and wipe the blood from his mouth using his sleeve.
"Today's youth...my goodness..."
"Anyways." Hayato turned his attention back to Izuku and gave him a reassuring smile. "Come on. This'll be good for the both of us." Hayato said and Izuku thought for a moment. He could disagree and they could all go back to bed. But...
"Okay." Izuku replied, nodding at Hayato. The two turned away from each other and began to walk, activating their One for Alls as they began to think. "First one to tap out, loses."
"I'm down for that. Or whoever's the first one to fall to their knees, too."
"I'm game." Momo and Toshinori took a few steps back, watching as the boys suddenly had a considerable distance between them now.
"Alright then. Don't make too much of a mess now, boys." Toshinori said as he raised his right arm. The two chuckled and clenched their fists, feeling their powers reach their current limits. "Fight!"
On his cue, the two snapped around and ran at each other, feeling the world slow down around them. Izuku threw a punch forward at Hayato, and the white-haired boy caught it with his left hand and delivered a hard uppercut to counter it.
'He's taking advantage of his boosted speed now!' Izuku smirked, taking a step back from the recoil as he prepared himself to return the favor. Hayato laughed and leapt into the air, spinning as he reeled his right foot back. Izuku braced himself, expecting it to be the attack they had seen Hayato do earlier, only for the speedster to slam his foot on his head. 'What?!'
"Come on. You're taking it easy on me, aren't you?" Hayato asked as he landed and jumped away from Izuku. Izuku smiled and ran at him, reeling his arm back to punch him the same way. Hayato rolled his eyes, preparing to counter it the same way, but Izuku instead went down and swiped his leg at his, successfully tripping the boy. Hayato, caught off guard by this, moved his weight back to to be able to put his hands on the ground and flip back onto his feet. "Nice job."
"Thanks." Izuku prepared himself as Hayato suddenly appeared in front of him, throwing punch after punch that even he could barely dodge in his sped-up state. Izuku grabbed his arm and turned around, prepared to flip him over his shoulder onto the floor. But Hayato began to vibrate, phasing his arm out of Izuku's grip before grabbing the boy by his shirt, throwing him at a nearby building.
Izuku, impressed by Hayato's quick movements, used Float to slow his movement and fixed himself so his feet would land safely on the wall. Hayato smirked and ran up the same wall, reaching Izuku and beginning to throw punch after punch once more as they stood on the side of the wall. Izuku responded by dodging each swing and moving around Hayato who still kept swinging. When he found his chance: he delivered a hard punch at 25 percent of One for All's power into Hayato's chest, making the boy fly up and off the building and into the air above it. Izuku followed him, appearing in the air above him as he reeled his right arm back.
"Texas..." He threw the next punch, preparing to end his quick sparring session with Hayato, but his eyes widened when he saw Hayato smirking at him.
"Predictable." Hayato caught his arm and pushed his One for All to 20 percent, throwing Izuku as hard and as fast as he could to the ground below them. Izuku used Float once more to stop his descent, but he was left looking at the makeshift street below him. When he turned his head, he barely had time to react to Hayato coming down with a foot extended. Once his kick made contact, Izuku let out a pained grunt as the high velocity kick slammed him into the ground.
"So...my win?" Hayato asked, removing his foot from Izuku and extending a hand to him. Izuku nodded and grabbed his hand, standing up as everything began to move normally once more. The two turned to see Toshinori and Momo staring at them, jaws agape as they struggled to comprehend what they just saw.
"I just finished saying to fight..." Toshinori whispered as the two looked at each other confused. For them, their quick spar lasted maybe several minutes, but for Momo and Toshinori: it had been maybe four seconds at most.
"Hayato...Midoriya...you two are amazing..." Momo muttered, covering her mouth in disbelief while the two shrugged.
"At least we kept the damage to a minimum." Hayato said, patting Izuku's back. But the green-haired boy winced and took a step forward, feeling the pain from the kick once more.
"R-Right...but how did you know my moves?" Izuku asked, rubbing the area of his back where he took the kick the best he could.
"Sir. He's been teaching me how to anticipate my opponent's movements and attacks, saying that you begin to notice attack patterns if you focus enough. And luckily for me, I can see things slower when they're not like you or another speedster so I have more time to react and learn their movements. But in your case: I've been around you long enough to know that you usually start with a punch or two, typically from your right arm so I anticipate it. You try to gain the high ground by reading my movements too, but in the end I picked up on all of it faster than you. Especially when you sent me into the air: I knew you were gonna go for either Detroit, Texas, or California to get me before I could react. After that, it was just a matter of seeing if you'd use Float to stop yourself like I anticipated and I had the chance I needed." Hayato explained, doing the motions Izuku would normally do when he would fight. Once he was done explaining, he was surprised to see all three of them staring at him as if he was someone else in that moment. "What?"
"I don't know if it's Nighteye or you being a good influence on him, Young Yaoyorozu..." Toshinori muttered and Momo shook her head.
"Even I don't have an answer for you."
It had been several days since the meeting to coordinate the attack on the Shie Hassaikai and every single hero in attendance had begun to do their part. The lower level heroes would enter areas they had assumed would be buildings for the Hassaikai to utilize as warehouses. And other heroes like Fatgum and Ryukyu would do reconnaissance in their areas, following any of the known Hassaikai members they would find to see if they would be led to where Eri was being held. As the days passed by, and each building came up empty, the heroes began to grow increasingly frustrated as they looked for even the smallest sign that they were on the right path, especially Sir Nighteye.
And in the U.A. side, the students in attendance were tasked to keep their involvement as well as any information about the attack a secret. This proved to be difficult when the students in 1-A caught onto the strange moods from Fumikage, Eijiro, Tsuyu, Ochaco, Hayato, and Izuku. Their impatience growing each day as they wished for a single sign that they were ready to move on the Hassaikai's base.
As for Hayato and Mirio, the two who felt the most guilty and impatient about the situation at hand, the two kept looking at their phones and losing themselves in their thoughts with each passing hour. Despite the reassurance from the others that they had done the right thing: they couldn't help but feel guilty about not taking Eri away from Blitz that day. Mirio especially, since he was the one who stopped Hayato from reacting to Blitz and chasing after them. But, the two agreed the only thing they could do in the moment was wait and they would save the little girl when they could.
This was how things went, until 5 days later...
Hayato laid in bed, looking at the ceiling enveloped in darkness as he struggled to close his eyes to sleep. He sighed as he thought about Sorahiko's condition, wondering if the old man was thinking about him too. Any day now, he would save his grandfather, but he needed to keep being patient and he would save both Eri and Sorahiko. Eri would be a...difficult thing to deal with after. But they would cross that bridge when they got there. He sighed and rolled over, closing his eyes to start counting sheep, but a loud beeping sound caught his attention and he snapped up. He turned to his nightstand and saw a message coming in on his phone. He grabbed his phone and opened the message, his eyes widening when he saw who it was from.
The message was a mass alert sent to all of the people present at the meeting from Nighteye's agency: they had finally located the Shie Hassaikai's base of operations and they were ready to move out the next day.
Hayato rushed out of bed, running to the elevator and making his way down to the lobby. When he was there, he was relieved to see the other five already awake with their phones out.
"Did you guys get the message too?" Ochaco asked, and the other five nodded.
"It's time to move." Eijiro said, excitedly pumping his fist into the air.
"We're gonna stop those villains, ribbit."
"And stop them from producing such a dangerous drug." Fumikage added, while Dark Shadow appeared from his body and gave a thumbs up.
"Don't forget saving Eri." Ochaco reminded them, raising a finger before looking at Izuku.
"And Gran Torino as well." Izuku added, before turning his attention to Hayato who was busy sending a message to Mirio.
"It's time to make up for our mistake, Mirio." Hayato whispered, pressing send. His message said: "We're not going to let her go this time." Seconds later, his phone beeped once more and he saw it was a response from his senior that was a simple: "Never again."
