A/N: Sometimes I wonder why I even try to have a schedule... oh well. I guess I'll just reiterate that I have no intention on abandoning this story, even it it takes a month or seven to get out new chapters.
As a side note, in an SBS, Oda revealed that the name of the One Piece world is Blue Planet. I'm not going to be using it a lot, but it may come up occasionally.
Ozpin's head was an absolute mess. There were many mysteries about Usopp that him being from another world explained, such as his background and the Pop Greens. That did not change the gravity of the bombshell that was dropped on him.
Did the Gods create, and then abandon another world? Humanity existing in two separate instances seems impossible otherwise, even if Usopp is a bit different than the Humans on Remnant. What does this mean?
He could tell from everyone's expressions that they expected, or at least hoped, that he could share some insight into this situation, but there was not much he could add.
"Between me, Usopp, and this Arlong we encountered, this phenomenon almost seems too common, especially since it happened to me twice," Maria said, "Surely with how long you've lived, you would have encountered someone from Usopp's world before, right?"
"Unfortunately, I have not. Disappointing as it may be, I do not know more about this than any of you. Whether there is any meaning for Usopp and you to arrive now, in this current era, is yet to be seen."
"Do you think the Gods are responsible?" Maria asked.
There was silence in the room for a moment.
"...That is an interesting hypothesis, but for now it is mere speculation. I would certainly like to think that I am receiving some help after all of this time, but then why would a person like Arlong arrive as well?"
"That is a good point… I was hoping that some light would finally be shed on the subject, but that's fine. We can speculate the meaning of this all we want later, but have training to do. If you'd like Oscar to join, he'd be more than welcome."
"Hold on a minute," Ruby said, "Before we get to training today, we should call Usopp. He was supposed to call me yesterday, but I guess he forgot." Ruby had a small frown on her face, feeling just a bit peeved.
"Now that you mention it, I haven't seen Usopp around. What is he doing, exactly?" Ozpin asked.
"That's right, we had to explain so much earlier that I forgot to tell you about the mission Usopp got from Professor Lionheart," Maria said.
She went on to explain about the appearance of the new kind of Grimm based on Usopp's Pop Greens, and that Usopp agreed to hunt them down personally.
"Now this is a problem," Ozpin said, "And I'm afraid there is not much we can do."
"What do you mean?" Jaune asked.
"Assuming that these new Grimm can be controlled by Salem like any other, then don't you think it is likely that Usopp is being led on a wild goose chase? He's made no progress in all of the time he's been out there, and our enemies are staying hidden from him as well."
Ruby stood up. "Then, we should let Usopp know that! Let's have him come back!"
Ozpin raised his hand. "This is the tricky part of the situation. Life out in the villages is already a delicate struggle for survival. These new Grimm are capable of upsetting that balance, and there is not much the villages can do to defend themselves from them. If Usopp were to stop his pursuit, that would give Salem free reign to cause some real havoc."
Ren's and Nora's gazes fell down. They both knew that sometimes, one powerful Grimm was enough to cause disaster.
"That is true," Maria said, "On our way here, we encountered a village that was ruined by one of these Pop Grimm… There were no survivors. Though they had been attacked by bandits before that."
"So, the villages are basically being held hostage?" Jaune asked, "That's unfair! What are we supposed to do?!"
"Nothing… At least for now. Anything we say over the scroll could be listened to by Salem's faction, therefore we should avoid giving out any sensitive information to Usopp when we call him. However, Usopp's mobility has no doubt surprised the enemy, so they can't make any bold moves with the Pop Grimm without being discovered. His newfound Semblance is surely an unexpected thorn in Salem's side. He is undoubtedly saving many lives right now, so I can't say that Leonardo made the wrong decision to send him out there… Yet, the Relic's protection is of utmost importance."
"How long will Usopp have to stay out there?" Ruby asked.
"I would say it will at least be for another month. If Salem were to try anything against Haven, it would be before classes start up again. At that moment, they will likely assault a village far from Haven with the Pop Grimm, essentially taking him out of the action long enough for whatever plan they have against Haven to work. Before that, we will need to talk to Usopp in person so we can work out some sort of strategy."
"Just a month," Maria said, "I would have liked to have more time to train these kids, but that will have to do."
"I admit, it came as a pleasant surprise to see that you all are still striving to improve yourselves. As the former Headmaster of Beacon, I would also like to oversee some aspects of my former student's training. And Oscar will be participating as well, in order to strengthen his body, Aura, and Haki."
Wait, what?!
"He'll inherit my muscle memory in time, but Haki will be a brand new concept for the both of us. Now Ms. Calavera, I do hope that you haven't been going easy on them."
"Of course not, trust me, I've been putting them through the wringer."
I don't feel so good about this, can't we reconsider, Ozpin?!
"That's good to hear."
Ozpin!
"Alright alright alright," Ruby said with impatience, "Now its time to call Usopp!"
"Try and find a way to get him to come back in person, at least for a short while."
Usopp answered the scroll, feeling a bit sheepish about destroying part of the forest as well as forgetting to call Ruby yesterday. "Um, hel-"
"Usopp!" called out a voice that he recognized was Nora's, "I can't believe you left to go have all of the fun by yourself!"
"Nora, Usopp didn't leave Vale to have fun," Ren said, "And neither did we."
"Usopp!" Jaune called out, "If you had waited a bit, then our new team name definitely would have been Junior(JUNRR) instead of Ranger(RNJR) as there is no U in Ranger!"
"We would have just had the name be spelled R-N-J-U-R, it's not like team names have been that strict with the spelling," Ruby interjected.
"Hey everyone, don't overwhelm him all at once!" Qrow called out from the back.
Usopp couldn't help but smile at the voices that he hadn't heard in some time. "I'm glad to see that you all made it here safely. Did you have much trouble on your way here?"
"It felt like we had nothing but trouble!" Jaune complained.
"Ha ha ha, I felt the same on my way here. I… I'm sorry that I was impatient."
There was a moment of silence.
"I wish I had something to show for it, but I still haven't made any progress on finding Cinder, or cleaning up my own mess with the Pop Grimm."
"Oh come on, enough with the apologies! None of us blame you for the new type of Grimm, so don't worry about that," Ruby said, "And Cinder will show herself when it's time for her to cause trouble. We're all just glad to be talking with you again. Anyway, do you think you can drop by Haven again anytime soon?"
"Thank you, but why do you need me to come back so soon?"
"I, uh…"
"How about this," Maria interrupted, "In two weeks, I would like you to come visit and check in on everyone's training. You don't have to stay long, but the results of that training is something you have to see in person."
"Oh, that could be interesting! How much progress do you think they'll make in two weeks? That isn't a lot of time."
"Who knows, that's something you'll have to come here to find out. I will also be checking on the results of your own close combat training at that time as well."
"I've been fighting so many Grimm while I've been out here that I've lost count, I don't think you'll be disappointed, ha ha! Oh, and that reminds me, I came up with a new idea for a melee weapon!"
Ruby's eyes sparkled. "Oooh, a new weapon you say? What is it?"
"I'll tell you more when I see you in person, I'll probably need your help building it. The main idea is a bit of a gimmick... though most of my ideas are like that, ha ha."
"I can't wait! But for now, let's take some time to catch up! So much happened on our adventures that I'm sure we could talk for ages!"
"Sure, I'll tell you the heroics of the Great Sky Warrior Usopp that all the villages are talking about! And I'll look forward to hearing about your journey as well."
The sun had long set by the time Arlong and his 30 loyal soldiers approached the coast of Menagerie. Near the shore was an underwater village, which was more separated from Kuo Kuana's shallow sea district. This place was the home of the aquatic Faunus that followed him, but with no way of knowing how much time they had left, they swam past it.
"I can only hope we made it in time," Arlong said.
"High Leader, I can't imagine that Adam, as detestable as he may be, would go as far as to attack the Belladonnas."
"I don't want to believe it either… but if we're wrong, it will be their blood on our hands. For now, we will make haste to Ghira's house. We must make sure that they are safe!"
"Yes, High Leader!"
It took less than a minute for the group to emerge from the waters and make landfall. Even at night, there were still people walking about, but they all made way for the group of armed Faunus.
"Whoa, who are they? The White Fang?"
"I've never seen a Faunus like the guy up front before."
"Wait, doesn't he look like the photos that one girl was spreading around?"
So Adam has already spread my appearance to the people of Kuo Kuana… Then the Menagerie Branch must already be under his control.
"Watch your tongue you-"
"Pay no attention to them, don't lose focus on our goal."
Gunshots rang out, surprising everyone that was present and hardening Arlong's expression. The direction that came from was Ghira's place!
Ignoring the civilian's shock, the group ran down the streets as fast as they could. It was not long before the central mansion of Kuo Kuana was visible.
Arlong's eyes had long turned into slits by now, his face contorting with rage. "Adam, you bastard! To think that you would DARE!"
The mansion was on fire. Smoke rose into the sky, and more and more gunshots rang out into the night.
Ghira… Khali… As much as I have disagreed with the both of you, I can't let you two die! I WILL not!
Around 20 years ago in Remnant, a bit more than 2 years ago on Blue Planet…
Arlong had recently been defeated by Straw Hat Luffy, and now he was disembarking at a familiar prison. Chains were wrapped around him to prevent him from trying to escape, and he was escorted by an entire squadron of marines. What awaited him was imprisonment at the World Government's most secure prison, Impel Down, a hellish fate for any pirate.
Damn you, Straw Hat Luffy! I will not forget what you have done to me!
The large gates to Impel Down opened, and the Warden Magellan walked out with a contingent of guards. "Welcome back to Impel Down, scum."
Arlong tried to break out of the chains with no success. "Shut your mouth human! Where are Hachi, Chew, and Kuroobi!"
Magellan towered over Arlong, and he simply grabbed the Fishman and pushed him down to the ground. "Don't resist, you should already be aware of what I am capable of. I have the authority and power to execute you at any time I wish, and I have no obligations to answer your questions. You were once saved from this hell by Jimbei, but that will not happen again."
"Get your hand off-"
Magellan let out poison gas from his mouth that temporarily paralyzed Arlong. "Get me some seastone handcuffs, this prisoner may not be a Devil Fruit user, but he is strong enough to break out of regular ones!"
"Yes sir!"
"And after that, bring him to Level 5."
"Level 5?! His bounty is only 20 million berries though!"
"I don't care. There is evidence that he has bribed marines to keep his bounty low, and he is a repeat offender. I have no sympathy for him."
Level 5 of Impel Down was known as the Freezing Hell. It was a frozen landscape inside the prison where survival itself was a struggle. Arlong, cuffed in seastone, was unceremoniously dropped in a cell. The frozen corpses of some other cellmates were his only company.
As the cell door was locked, the guards that brought him here started laughing. "Serves you right, Fishman! You shouldn't have tried to go against humans in the first place."
Arlong still couldn't even move, he could only glare at the humans that had brought him here.
Weeks had passed, and the freezing temperatures had sapped him of much of his strength. Every few days, the Jailer Beasts of Impel Down would roam Level 5 and mercilessly beat the surviving prisoners with iron clubs. Arlong himself was battered and bruised, even as the blood splattering from his body froze in the air.
I wonder… when will I die?
Arlong was barely conscious when a hole opened up underneath him. He could do nothing but fall into the void.
"It looks like Arlong disappeared from his cell," one guard said.
"Demoning away again? Even after all of this time, it's still creepy."
"It's another name we can cross off the list. I hope he enjoys his stay at the actual Hell, ha ha ha ha!"
A/N: Arlong flashback time! I actually planned on dropping his backstory a bit later in the story, but I got in the mood to write it, so here it is. Well, at least here is the very start.
Arlong's current status is still unknown even after all of these years, so in a way, he was the perfect character for me to spirit away into Remnant. And what do you know, Impel Down already has some convenient lore about disappearing prisoners, so the guards would not take it seriously, nor would such a thing ever be printed on the newspapers. Of course, Arlong didn't go to level 5.5 like the rest of them...
